June 2017

I was in Wisconsin last week and had two meetings, one with Gregg Franchi-ni of Pierce Box & Paper and the other with Dino McNabb and Tony Chi-odini. I felt that many things were accomplished.

July 30th will be the second anniver-sary of the death of Julie and Jay Ho-gan. I can’t believe it has been two years. On all my trips to Ripley, I ex-pect Jay to walk into any room I am working in and say “good morning” and shake my hand. We use to spend time with Julie and the kids at night. He used to call me on his way home from Ripley to share funny things that happened during his day. In a flash, it is all gone and the only thing that remains are memo-ries. We just had our Hogan Reunion in Lake Geneva and I can’t help but think Jay, Julie and their children would have been there with us cele-brating the family. TJ was there but not Cole. I know that my dad, his broth-ers, my brother Tom and Jay were looking down in amazement of the festivities.

At the Hogan Reunion in Lake Geneva this last week, many memories came back of Ray Pierce (founder and CEO or Pierce Packaging Company dba Pierce Distribution). Mr. Pierce once owned a condo in Stone Manor on Lake Geneva. He was my boss and we spent a great deal of time togeth-

er. I would attend meetings with him there or at local restaurants. I have-n’t been back to Lake Geneva in many years so the memories came on heavy. This also reminded me that on July 9th, I will celebrate my 38th year with Pierce. Where has all the time gone? As some of you may not know, I started as a Salesman for the company. I was also allowed to sell for Pierce Box & Paper Company which Mr. Pierce also owned. It was managed by Lou Franchini who eventually bought the Paper Compa-ny. weren’t for our customers, there would be no Pierce. Keep this in mind each and every day as you do your specific job in one of our facili-ties.

I would like to wish everyone celebrating a birthday in July a Happy Birthday. There is one person celebrating a milestone anniversary in July, Tabitha Lee (10 years) on July 2nd. Houston Writes... Success in Life Life is a gift that has been given to you. It is in your hands to make the best of what God has given to you. Dare to believe. Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, and honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the po-tential to turn a life around. The only disability in life is a bad atti-tude. Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. If you can’t

Alice Capistran

help them, at least don’t hurt them. Never look down on anyone unless you are helping them up. Success is not measured only by money and stuff. Success is not only to be meas-ured by a position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which you’ve overcome. Life is meas-ured in love, positive contributions and moments of Grace. It’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.

Paint Shop Boss After being employed for 5 years, JT Bradford has been selected as Ripley's Plant 7 Associ-ate of the Month. Recognized by his Line Lead, Jerry Hankins, our Shade Tree Mechanic was excited when he learned of his selection. Supervisor Tony Strawn was pleased, also. JT enjoys working in the Paint Shop where his main duty is painting returned parts from Dealers - "I make them look like new. Putting on my protective painting gear, and especially wearing my respirator mask, makes me look like a super power hero.” JT started his career in the Woodshop department building crates (which he still loves) and often times you will see him helping out by driving a forklift in other departments. "Pierce has created a great work environment where we help each other out and I enjoy the people who make the work flow smoothly where we get it done and get it over with," states JT. The easy-going 27 year old brags about still living at home with parents and his 4 siblings - he enjoys "chillin" with the family. Keeping a keen eye on JT and making sure JT stays on point is JT's Dad, Jef-fery, who works in the Woodshop department. JT is simply a "chip off the old block". Proud of you, JT!

Welcome baby True!

North American summers are hot. Sometimes spring and fall temperatures reach dangerous levels as well. Most summers see heat waves in one or more parts of the United States. Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatali-ties each year and even more heat-related illnesses. In addition to the resources below, OSHA offers a free OSHA Heat Safety App for both Android and iPhone.

This website is designed to inform you about the health dangers of heat, prepare you for ex-cessive heat events, and tell you what to do during an excessive heat wave. You will find vital information about the dangers of leaving children, pets or anyone with limited mobility alone in a car even for a few minutes in what might seem like mild weather. Children locked in cars have died in December and in 70 degree weather, even with a window left open a little. You also will find information about protecting yourself from excessive heat, educational materials and specfics on how the National Weather Service keeps you aware of potentially dangerous situations. MWS tries make learning fun with games and activities to help educate your chil-dren about the dangers of heat and provide you with links for more information. Spanish lan-guage outreach materials are also available.

Learn from real life heat victims. You can also see our heat safety videos. If you, or someone you know, have been a victim of excessive heat, please share your story so we can prevent others from becoming a heat victim.

Yesterday I received a call from one of our customers. The sweet lady on the phone asked, "do you have anyone avail-able that speaks Spanish"? I immediately responded, "Yes, hold the phone, I need to go out in the plant and get her.” Alejandra Sanchez came to my rescue! Ale speaks fluent Spanish and sprang into action. The caller, from Miami, FL, was needing assistance with directions to Tennessee for a container being unloaded from a ship. So proud of Ale and her professionalism in handling the request from a customer - her actions made us "look good". Ale has been a valued Pierce associate since March 2011. The "talented" Ale has worked in every department, with the exception of Wood-shop. She is presently in Breakdown - Receiving, but her favorite department is the 3:30 p.m. bell as she returns to her job as Mom to her 11 year old son, Joshua, and 7 year old daughter, Harley. Ale, thanks for being a member of our team and what you do - you are appreciated!

Thanks for What You Do Alejandra Sanchez

On June 23rd Komatsu - Ripley hosted their annual Relay For Life fundraiser. We were pleased to be invited to participate in the Lip Sync Contest. WOW is the words to describe our Pierce participants. Tracy Brown, as the one and only - Cindy Lauper, heated up the stage as she sang and danced to "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and the stage became even "hotter" when associates Priscilla Longoria, Pat Douglas and Janice Rice grooved on the stage to the delight of the crowd. We're PROUD of our participants and their talent and creativi-ty. As MC for the event, I challenged the audience to be thankful for this event and be prayerful for those fighting the cancer battle. I shared news of our associate, Debra Chalk, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer who is courageously fighting the battle. Ripley's Plant 7 is plan-ning a fund raiser to help with Ms. Debra's insurance premiums. Thanks, also, to Tracey Strawn for serving as one of the

celebrity judges.

Ripley Cont... Welcome to Ripley (Plant 7) Dean!

June 14th and 15th was special to Plant 7 as we welcomed our corporate manager of HR, Dean Sanderson. Dean's mission was completed by meeting with representative, Wendi Mills, of Metro Industrial (our temp agency). While down South, we put Dean through the paces (new steps) as he participated in our daily Stretch and Flex program to the delight of our associates who loved sharing space with him on the back row. Several associates shared improvement tips, as well as lots of laughter. Dean fit in real well with the "wild bunch" on Wednesday's ses-sion, but really could not keep up and excused himself from Thursday's activities - maybe next visit will be better. Thanks, Dean! You're always welcome to Ripley - City of Hospitality.

On Friday, June 30th, Ripley's Plant 7 honored Kelli Reynolds with a baby shower. Kelli is our back-up Komatsu Representative. TJ (Thaddeus Junior) is expected to be delivered on August 2nd. From the looks of Mom (see at-tached picture) the future "superman" may fly in a few days earlier. Work friends made the day special with lots of good food and more importantly lots of great and useful gifts. Good Luck, Kelli!

CHALLENGE:

Knock knock.

Who’s there?

Dean. Dean Sanderson, that’s who, the winner of the Ninety Day Corporate Weight Loss Challenge.

At right, the winner.

As I wrote a couple months back, the Corporate office had a weight loss challenge. Most everyone here participated and at lunchtime, the air was full of the scent of Lean Cuisines and Weight Watchers frozen lunches. We munched on low fat, low carb foods and the potato chip bucket has stayed at mostly the same level. Some of us even dusted off our gym memberships and worked out! (cough*yourstruly*cough).

However, after 90 days of excruciating competition, Dean Sanderson, our HR Director, edged out Sylvia Davis by less than 1%. It was a hard fought battle, but Dean graciously took Sylvia out for lunch with his winnings, while the rest of us all cried into our candy bar wrappers. (just kidding. OR AM I?)

After the ninety day challenge, I’m proud to report that the good habits we picked up over that period of time has mostly stayed with the players. However, I’ll ad-mit that I did have some chocolate once the challenge was over.

I HAVE A NEW BOOK OUT!

On May 9 of this year, I released another book in the Kindle Worlds Mary O’Reilly Para-normal Mysteries series. This one is called Grave Injury, and it was welcomed into the Amazon eBook fold by selling over 350 copies its first month out! Here’s a snippet:

Something dark and unnatural is going after the survivors of a car crash that claimed the life of Paris Monroe a year ago. When a young woman is found dead in the park, Paris reappears and asks for Mary O’Reilly’s help before the rest of her friends meet the same dreadful fate.

A pregnant Mary wants to help her find out who—or what—killed Paris' friend Tabitha, in hopes that Paris can then find the heavenly light she has been denied up to this point.

When the abomination savagely attacks Bradley in a dark cemetery, however, things get very per-sonal. Mary needs to discover what sinister creature is behind the assaults before any more lives are lost, all while protecting the thing most valuable to her—her family!

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO & ISLANDS OF

ADVENTURE

In June, my sister Jenny Starkman and I ditched our husbands and combined six kids and headed down to Orlando FL, where we stayed at the Sapphire Falls Resort, on site at Universal Theme Parks for six nights. It’s the only place where I can use my interactive magic wand in public without being hauled off to the loony bin. What I’m saying is that we geeked out. We’re both huge Harry Potter fans and this was definitely the place to go if you like that type of thing. Hogwarts is a magical place with a fantastic ride, The Forbidden Journey. We drank Butterbeer, toured Diagon Alley, and laid out by the pool. We rode all the rides we could and then some. We wore the tread off our walk-ing shoes touring the two parks. We enjoyed the water taxis between our hotel and the theme parks, tried a few new restaurants, and I had a granola bar stolen out of my hands by a squirrel who was obviously an experienced pickpocket. We came back happy, broke, tired, and tan...and already planning for next year’s trip to Orlando!
