The time is flying by. We just finished MSA Summer session and are winding down on the parade season. We had a great turnout for the Osman picnic and

a big thanks to all those who worked hard to make it a success. We also had a lot of fun and a great turnout at the Saint Paul Park parade with a fantastic Oasis at the American Legion following the parade. A big thanks to Rich & Sharon Purcell who hosted a Membership planning meeting at their home with several members of the Divan and Membership Chairman and have some great plans laid out for moving forward. I would like to Congratulate Ian Gardiner for receiving his Master Mason Degree on August 18th. Welcome to the greatest fraternity in the world, Ian, we are all proud of you for taking this great step. I hope to see you all at the Stated Meeting on September 9th at the Spur. We will be giving out some awards for years of membership to Osman and have plenty of business to take care of. We are

getting ready for the Potentate’s Ball on September 13th at the Osman Event Center and look forward to seeing you all there. We have a great band, “The Senders” coming to entertain us. They are a band from Southern Iowa and have been together over 50 years (they formed in their early teens). The Potentate’s trip will follow just a few days later leaving on Sept. 18th for Rapid City / Deadwood area for a few days of fun and adventure. Finally, our last temple parade of the year will be in in River Falls on October 4th. I would also like to thank the Osman Cycle Corp for stepping up to help out the Dragon Patrol and keep Chang on the street for a parade.

I look forward to seeing you all in September at the different events

The Chief’s CornerI want to give a

Thank You to all of you who were in attendance for the St. Paul Park Heritage Days parade on August 16th. Not only were there a good number

at the parade, but many of you came out to support Newport Lodge for their pancake breakfast as well. This is always appreciated, by not only your fellow Nobles, but by your Masonic brethren as well.

A great time was had by all that attended MSA in Sioux Falls, SD. El

Riad did a great deal of work preparing for this great weekend of fun and fellowship. Start making your plans now for MSA 2015 in Fargo, ND.

The Last Parade of the Season will, as usual, be in River Falls on October 4th. We have not received any information from Zor yet as to parade details. I have to say to please watch your Parade blast for additional information as to line up times. It is normally a fairly early day, with the Oasis starting around 8 and step off about 10, but as I said, watch your parade blast for more information.

We are quickly closing in on the end

of another wonderful parade season. Time flies when you are marching so that children may walk.

March with Pride in your parades my fellow Nobles. Always remember to keep a blue lodge petition as well as a Shrine petition in your Fez case, because you just never know who your actions may inspire.

Fraternally Yours,Rique Beslin

Austin Area Shrine Club & Oriental BandAugust found the band

participating in parades at Lanesboro (Aug. 3), Kenyon (Aug. 16), Goodview (Aug. 17), and St. Charles (Aug. 24). Also, on September 7th we will participate in the parade at Mantorville.

It’s been a pretty good year with seven to 14 members being present for our parades. As long as we have a good balance between the percussion instruments and the musettes, we can do a pretty good job. We could use a few new members who are willing to learn and play the musette.

In addition to parades, several of our members participated in the pancake breakfast on Saturday, August 2nd, at the Masonic Lodge in Austin. Sam Hagan, a thirteen year old member of a local Boy Scout Troop, had quite a project for his Eagle Scout rank. Fidelity Lodge members donated the proceeds to his project.

He decided to raise money to have a Fallen Soldier Memorial constructed in honor of his grandfather and veterans. He designed the memorial, and was working to raise the necessary $6,000-$7,000.00 dollars to complete the project. With the help of the Boy Scouts, Sam Hagan, along with Brothers from the Lodge and Nobles from the Shrine Club, $1,252.00 was raised (including donations). A grant was written to Minnesota Masonic Charities with hope that the amount will be matched.

On August 10th, members of the Oriental Band, attended and played for the 50th Anniversary Open House for Neil and Mary Hanson. Thank you Nobles for doing this on our

special day.

Upcoming dates include 2nd degree at the Masonic Lodge on Wednesday, August 27th, and our Oriental Band “wrap-up the parade season” steak, shrimp, and pork chop social to be held on Saturday, September 13th. Tentative location is the Conservation Club north of Austin.

Mighty MitesGreetings from the Mighty Mites

The Mighty Mites, like many other Shrine Units of Osman, have been on the move every weekend this summer continuing to work toward their goals of serving this great organization. This summer has been one filled with demands to perform in several parades each week and sometimes three on any given weekend. With these demands, we find that we have set the bar VERY high as to the commitment necessary to reach our goals, to support our hospital system.

Many times this summer I have heard members say, “I have plans next weekend and will not be able to parade with the Mites”. Yes, we have many activities that pull us in several directions throughout or busy summer. But, I have also heard several members state that they had plans, but because we were short of drivers, they were willing to change their plans allowing us to perform with a full parade unit. Being blessed with members willing to change their plans from time to time is priceless.

Thoughts about the Blue Lodge

Having just completed a great parade in Kasson, MN, we attended a picnic hosted by K-M Lodge #11 under the leadership of their Master Patrick Johnson and Brother Robert Tracy. Their Lodge made the decision to reach out and invite fellow Masons to attend a thank you picnic for attending their parade in Kasson. The Mighty Mites, fellow Masons all, were honored that we were hosted by fellow Masons.

With the above in mind, the Mighty Mites finished up another day of parading by having a discussion that gave us time to reflect on the need to not forget the Blue Lodge. During our discussion, several points of our brotherhood surfaced as discussion

points. A central theme seemed to be that we should never forget our Blue Lodge, our brothers, and the relationships that we are afforded.

While the members of the Mighty Mites belong to several different Blue Lodges in our communities, we all have the common bond of the brotherhood. We also know that we have several members that have served, or are serving, as leaders of their lodges. The point of our discussion centered on the need to support those that guide their lodges.

A Call to Action

I would challenge all Shrine Units to make an effort to attend one Blue Lodge event each month as a unit.

Hope everyone is enjoying the last days of a great summer. The MSA and most of our parades are behind us. It was so pleasing to see the streets lined with parade watchers. They were enjoying all

of Osman’s parade units, especially the calliope. Thanks to all of the Nobles who helped with the driving.

In July, the Director’s Staff enjoyed an evening dinner cruise on the Jonathan Paddleboard with our friends from the Legion of Honor. The food was good, and the cruise gave us a chance to see just how high the recent flood waters had been on the river. We all had a good time.

Our camel has been refurbished. Thanks to Chris, our leg doctor, who repaired the broken leg--and to Kent, the farrier, who fixed the camel’s hooves--and to Ron, the groomer, who gave the camel a fresh coat of paint (and eyelashes). Clyde, the camel, was ready for his debut at the Camel Herder’s Degree at the MSA in Sioux Falls.

Our last parade of the season is in River Falls on Oct. 4th. Watch the Osman for addition information regarding the starting time.

Marv Edelstein has been moved to a different health care facility. His new address is the Golden Living Center at 725 2nd Avenue, Hopkins, MN 55343. Ted Villeaux and Kent Swedberg had a nice visit with him recently. He was in good spirits and enjoys having company.

Our next Director’s Staff dinner meeting is at 6:00 pm at Joseph’s Restaurant located at 140 Wabasha Street. We are always looking for new members. Also, for current members, who haven’t attended a meeting for a long time, we invite you to come and check us out. No reservations are necessary. You’ll have fun.

Keep on rollin’ with the Director’s Staff

ChantersWe have enjoyed our summer season

without a lot of hot weather. Time now to go to the State Fair and eat all kinds of fried foods on a stick.

The MSA will be held in Sioux Falls this month. More about this next month.

We still badly need a director and pianist. Anyone?

Our Chanter Unit was at the Hospital on August 20th. One of our members, Gordon Eddy, gave a large contribution to the Hospital. Gordon has been in our Chanter unit for 64 years! Some of the Imperial Divan were in attendance to accept this gift. His name will be placed on the wall with other major contributors. This was written before the affair, so not a lot a details until after the 20th. Many Chanters were in attendance at this significant event.

Chanters plan to be at the Potentate’s Ball in September. Do hope the total turnout is large. Show up and let’s all have a great time.

May your blessings outnumber

The shamrocks that grow.

And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

Mankato Shrine Club & T-Birds

Sportsmen Club

Greetings from the Mankato T-Birds! We are nearing the end of a busy summer and parade schedule. The highlight of the year for many of our members was participating in the Imperial Parade in Minneapolis. I do not recall Hennepin Avenue closing down for very many parades, which speaks to the high regard the public holds our great fraternity. Thank you to all of our members who filled our parade unit at Imperial.

The T-Birds were also pleased to participate in the Temple Parade at Pan-O-Prog in Lakeville. We would like to give special thanks to Chief Rabban Jeff Olsen for driving with us in the parade. Jeff has been a wonderful mentor to the Mankato T-Birds and we look forward to him being in parades with us next year. We appreciate Jeff ’s help and support in our efforts to expand the Club and parade unit. Jeff is not the only member of the Divan to assist the T-Birds this summer.

We were so happy to have Sean Gardiner come to Southern Minnesota and drive our cars in two parades. Sean was a great asset to our parade unit and really enjoyed testing one of our new cars, a rat-rod, which we are calling the T-Bucket. As always, we have an open invitation to any members of the Divan to parade with us.

The Mankato T-Birds are renowned for driving the mini Model T’s in parades over many years. Thanks to the efforts of some of our guys, we have converted a couple of cars into rat-rods with more powerful engines, wider tires, better steering and enhanced maneuverability. Our parade unit will combine the traditional T-Bird cars with the new T-Buckets. The new cars have already been in several parades and have thrilled parade goers. We are so glad to have two completed and are working on more for next parade season. Watch for us during the competitions at the Midwest Shrine Convention!

I would also like to mention that Ted Hoogenraad delivered a bag of toys to the Children’s Hospital on behalf of the T-Birds. We look forward to continuing to support the crucial efforts of the hospital and will contact hospital administration to see what we can help with.

Thank you to all of our nobles who have participated in a very active parade season. We appreciate everyone’s hard work and faithful attendance. We also appreciate our Ladies for supporting our work and organizing our post-parade Oasis.

PresidentMankato Shrine Club

Dear Nobles,

I am very pleased to announce the formation of the new Osman Sportsmen’s Club. Many of you may remember that we had a Sportsman’s club in the past that went out of existence. The club is back and we are very excited to get started with great activities and fraternal camaraderie.

Many Nobles expressed interest and enthusiasm in the club at the MSA convention in Sioux Falls where trap shooting was one of the competitive activities held. We hope to participate in similar competitions at next year’s MSA in Fargo, ND.

Our next meeting will be held on September 9th at 7:30 pm, or immediately following, the Stated Meeting at the Lost Spur. Dues to the Club are $20 annually. Membership already includes

many Osman Divan and officers as well as several Nobles who attended the MSA Convention.

Our activities will include trap and skeet shooting, sporting clays, pistol and rifle target shooting, lake and ice fishing trips and anything else we can do to enjoy the great outdoors. Our goal is to eventually be able to offer firearms safety training, archery training and permit to carry classes.

If you are interested in joining the Club feel free to attend the meeting on September 9. Please bring your ideas on other activities that you would like to see in the future. If you can’t make it, you are welcome to email me at [email protected] for additional information.

Legion of HonorOur July meeting on

the Jonathan Paddleford was a great time. Even though we didn’t have a lot of attendance, those who did attend, said it was a lot of fun! Thanks to Kent Swedberg, of

the Director’s staff, for including the LOH in this annual summer event.

We participated in an unexpected parade in Little Canada on August 3rd! Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to march! We carried 4 country flags and two rifles and we looked really sharp! Good job guys! Our Oasis was a blast!

August parades were really challenging. We added the Little Canada parade, August 3rd, and St Paul Park Osman parade, to our already planned Kenyon parade on August 16th! As always the Legion stepped up to participate in both. Kenyon is always fun! Thanks to PP Frank Peterson for including us in their parade. Our August meeting was held at

the Lost Spur grill. Thanks to my fellow officers for stepping up.

Our “Updated”, and almost gone, calendar, for the remaining months of 2014.

• September 13th Potentates Gala

• September 18th LOH Stated Meeting at the Spur Warehouse. We will have a cookout with all the fixin’s. We plan to have lots of fun and more news to follow!

• October 4th River Falls Parade. Ask a LOH member about the LOH River Falls tradition! You might want to become a member just to participate!

The Legion of

Honor would like to invite any new or old Noble to attend any of our meetings, or events, to see what it is we do, and the pride we all feel in doing it!

As we end the parade season once again and head towards the last few meetings for 2014, I want to thank each and every one of the LOH Nobles who have helped out this year. It is easy to lead those who serve so willingly.

With Pride and Honor,Commander Jim Moore

Other News

Osman Shrine Provost Unit held its Annual Picnic at Spooner Park, Little Canada on July 21, 2014. Weather forecasters had the planners pretty worried and there were more than one passing thought about canceling the event or moving it to an indoor location. However, it was eventually decided to proceed with the plan to hold the picnic in the shelter. The afternoon was extremely hot and muggy, but the Spooner Park shelter provided a comfortable setting as a gentle wind blew across the area.

Thirty-nine attended the picnic and they were treated to a meal catered by the Little Venetian. No one left the table hungry as there were ample servings of Fried Chicken, Italian Salad, Potato Salad, etc. In addition to the main meal, Gary Winter and Lady Gee brought appetizers and cake. Following the meal, Tom West set up the ever popular bingo game and Gary Winter called the numbers. Several prizes were

awarded and the grand prize, consisting of a jacket furnished by Mark Sandstrom, was presented to Lynette Erickson.

Kay Moss is a member of the Osman Nomads and became a Provost member on July 21. He is the Sitting Master of Tusler-Summit Lodge. Kay is actively involved in the Scottish Rite in the Valleys of St. Paul and Minneapolis. He is an Iron Worker by trade and so work at any height does not intimidate him! He currently is working on a construction project of significant size and duration at Koch Refinery in Rosemount.

Long-time Provost member John Ahlbom turned in his uniform and badge at the July Provost Picnic. He will continue to be on the Provost Roster as a social member. He has been a member of the Provost Unit for many years and his faithful service to the Unit is greatly appreciated. Interestingly, his late father in-law, Lynn Ballou was a Past Captain of the Osman Shrine Provost Unit.

On Sunday, July 27, 2014 the weather kept changing from clouds and brief bursts of rain to bright sunshine. Regardless of this unpredictable weather, there was a great turn-out at the Osman

Shrine at the Riverside Park in Cannon Falls. Several Provost members and their family were in attendance. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served fresh off of the BBQ grill and these were accompanied by all the fixings. After lunch, the Provost led the kids in fun and games while others socialized. Three

lucky winners had their ticket number drawn and they went home with new bicycles; among them were Provost Dale Johnson’s son.

Captain Seavey has appointed Mike Horn as Provost Sergeant for the remainder of the 2014 year. Mike’s Masonic background is extensive including having served as Master of Tusler-Summit Lodge. He is an Endowed Life Member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and is a Degree Director in that Body. In the Scottish Rite, he holds the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour. He is currently Secretary of Tusler-Summit Lodge and also is Treasurer of the St. Paul Valley of the Scottish Rite.

Albert Lea Shrine Club and Albert Lea CarsGreetings, Nobles, Ladies and friends,

Another parade season coming to an end, and a “GOOD” one it was. I would like to thank all those Nobles that helped our cause, and not just our unit but all the clubs and unit at Osman. “WE” sure saw a lot of smiling faces! The crowds loved us! Thank you Shrine International and Osman Temple for letting us serve you and your NOBLE cause. Talking about smiling faces, we sure had a lot of them at our Shrine sponsored breakfast July 6th. It was another good fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital. The parade season is a lot of work, no doubt, however, the rewards are many of which I think the greatest reward is that self-feeling of bringing joy to so many people. We touch people, right in the heart! AND IT FEELS GREAT!

Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the NileSummer greetings

from Mat-Sha Temple No. 62 Daughters of the Nile! We had a very successful Barbecue at the Roseville Masonic center on Saturday August 2nd, 2014. Princess Royal Diane Anderson had quite the spread with salads, baked beans, buns and barbecued ribs and chicken. We relaxed on the patio outside and enjoyed the beatiful weather. We set up for horseshoes and badmitton but the bugs were biting and we had to move inside. A big thanks goes out to Pr. Diane Anderson and Pr. Jan Lingo for all of their hard work. I was invited to speak at the DeMolay Conclave installation, later that day, August 2nd. A nice lunch was served, and immediately afterwards, the new

State Officers were installed, as well as the new State Sweetheart. My son, Jorun, was also introduced as a future member. He was so proud to get to stand up and wave! Mat-Sha Temple No. 62 wishes the new State Master Counselor, Tarrance Collier and his State officers, all the best in the upcoming year.

As I am writing this, I am also getting ready to head up to the Job’s Daughters “Blast from the past” Camp, from August 16th through August 19th at Camp Lake Hubert in Brainerd. I will not only be representing Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the Nile and bring greetings from the Temple, I will also be chaperoning a wonderful group of young ladies from Bethel 88 in Farmington. We will participate in volleyball, swimming, running on the “water weenie”, crafts, canoeing,

wishing on the water and meeting new people and making new friends. I am very excited about this long weekend with the young ladies of Job’s Daughters and will show them how much fun Daughters of the Nile is by doing a few attempts at running off the water weenie, myself! Yes, this Queenie is going off the Weenie! I will let you know how it went in the next article….hopefully with pictures too!

Mat-Sha Temple, No 62 is busy making preparations for our 3rd annual Scrap and Craft-till-ya-drop event being held on Saturday, September 20th at 2 pm at 200 E. Plato Blvd, St Paul MN 55106. This event is a 22 hour Scrapbooking and Crafting event. We invite you to bring any project you might be working on and a friend or two! The cost is $25 which includes a large table, dinner, snacks and fun! Please contact Pr. Diane Anderson at [email protected] or 612-868-5658, if you are interested in reserving a table. Mat-Sha Temple No. 62 is also preparing for the Official Visit of the Supreme Queen, Marsha D. Sowers, Supreme Queen of the Supreme Temple Daughters of the Nile. She will be visiting us on Tuesday October 7th. Our Ceremonial is at 2 pm that day, followed by dinner at Joseph’s. I am very excited to show our Supreme Queen our beautiful ritual work as well as welcoming new Princesses to our household. I hope everyone continues to have a relaxing and lazy summer! See you in September!

Keep shining!

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

It is hard to believe the summer is over. I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Minnesota weather.

Thanks you to all of you who keep remembering the Auxiliary with items for the children and pop tabs. We so appreciate all you do to help the Auxiliary provide so much for the children at

Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. Thank you Alexandria Shrine Club for again bringing us so many wonderful toys and stuffed animals. Thank you everyone who collects pop tabs for us. Thank you Larry Sandburg for the 160 pounds of pop tabs you collected for us.

Charles Van House is amazing. Through his recycling project in Austin, MN, he has sent us $1,137.69 so far this year. Charles has two trailers set up to collect pop cans and tabs. He takes these to the recycling facility and they send us checks for the items he brings them. It is very impressive to think that he can collect this many cans and tabs. Charles, we so appreciate your continued commitment to the Auxiliary and the children at Shriners Hospital.

We also had our third annual visit from B. J. Ulry from Galesville, WI. B. J was accompanied by Dan Rasmussen who is with the Rochester Dragon Patrol and ZOR Shriner Merlin Huber from LaCrosse. B. J. collects tabs from across the country. He has people in Florida, Kansas, and Memphis, in addition to many local Wisconsin people who collect tabs for him. B. J. delivered approximately 250 pounds of tabs to us recently. B. J. is not a Shriner but he is very committed to our cause. In the past he also made some rocking motorcycles for the children at our Hospital. Thank you B. J.!

As our summer comes to an end, our

fall Auxiliary activities begin. We hope you will be able to join us for all the great events we have planned for you from now to the end of the year. Our September event will be on September 27th, beginning at 11:30 AM. It will be a delicious luncheon at the Afton House and a style show featuring fashions from Baglios. You won’t want to miss the great style show. Baglios is going to give everyone a 10% discount on any clothing that is purchased. This event is being planned and hosted by Kay Skoog and Sandy Simpson.

Each year we do one event someplace between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Rochester in order to accommodate our Auxiliary members who live in the Rochester/Kenyon area. This year that event will be held on Saturday, October 25th in Kenyon. This will be a fun event beginning with a tour of the historical Gunderson House, followed with lunch at the new Schweich Hotel. Following lunch, we will have a presentation from Jane Ward who trains service dogs with “Helping Paws Dogs”. She will share with us what dogs can do for people with disabilities. Thank you Bev Peterson and

Cora Lee Monroe, who are from Kenyon and suggested that we use this venue for one of our luncheons this year. Bev and Cora Lee are helping Betty Porter and Sue Doty who are planning this event.

You will be hearing from us in November when we again do our “Turkey-less BINGO”.

December 6th will be our Holiday Party at the Mendakota Country Club. This is always such a great event. In addition to a fabulous lunch we will be entertained by the musical group “Flute Cocktail”. Elizabeth Ekholm, Kathy Flicek, and Betty Porter are planning this event.

Please mark your calendars now for all of these events; so, you won’t miss any of them. I look forward to seeing all of you at

these great events!

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman, and thank you for all of your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Rose West, Chairman [email protected]
