THESISPositioned at the intersection of two ex-ceedingly complex ecologies (that of the natural environment and that of human ar-tifact), future development must effectively synthesize the series of physical and virtual networks that coalesce in the modern me-tropolis.

The city is no longer the collective agglom-eration of buildings and their inhabitants, but rather the point of intersection of super-imposed networks that regulate the flow of non-physical commodities such as infor-mation, energy, politics, and financial flows, as well as more tangible systems such as transportation infrastructure.

These systems are legible on both the global and macro (city) scale. However, in the case of many cities, particularly those exhibiting rapid growth, the infrastructural networks supporting these systems begin to breakdown at the macro level.

With its thriving port, oil exports, and the resultant international financial flows, La-gos exhibits a rapidly evolving palimpsest of complex systems that has been inscribed over the existing fabric of the former co-lonial city. However, substantial informal networks (notably in the form of a thriving black market economy) have developed in response to the failure of formal infrastruc-ture systems to keep pace with the growth of the city. Consequently, Lagos exhibits a paradoxical condition in which it is at once the point of interaction of complex global networks (physical/virtual, formal/informal, social/economic) and a city plagued by dis-continuity and infrastructural deficiencies.

Although 96 percent of the population of the Lagos Metropolitan Area resides on the mainland, financial markets, amenities, and political influence are concentrated on Lagos Island, which is accessible only by three bridges. While the proposed Eko-Atlantic City land reclamation project would provide much needed housing and a new commercial center, its location south of Lagos Island would only exacerbate the existing circulation bottlenecks that result from inadequate transportation infrastructure (both public and private) leading to and from Lagos Island.

Consequently, this thesis proposes the redevelopment of an abandoned railroad easement in the Apapa area of Lagos as an alternate commercial and civic node for La-gos. Anchored by an exhibition/convention center and a ferry terminal, the proposed development provides linkages between existing suburban typologies, the adjacent port terminal (the largest in West Africa), and underutilized or blighted areas along the waterfront in order to serve as a catalyst for the redevelopment of marginalized space between the expressway and the Lagoon. A planted roofscape provides much-needed relief from urban density while serving as the connective tissue between programmatic elements.

Located on the corner of Burthe Street and Leake Avenue, this project calls for the adaptive reuse of a triangular CMU struc-ture as a base on which to position a resi-dence consisting of two individual private spaces with mutual access to a shared liv-ing space.

Dividing the program into three interlocking tubular structures, this scheme addresses the context by providing both direct and oblique views of the levee along Leake Av-enue while presenting a more inwardly fo-cused elevation to Burthe Street.

Given the parameters of the project, the notion of individual as opposed to shared space becomes crucial to the processes of defining space and establishing lines of sight.

The bands containing the individual ele-ments of the program fold in order to inter-lock over the central band of shared living space, which takes the form of a glass box.

The folding roof condition of the bands mir-rors the form of the stairs contained within these double height spaces.

The pattern of fenestration allows for unin-terrupted lines of sight through the shared space to the outdoor spaces and levee be-yond.

When the sliding glass panels that line much of the perimeter of the shared space are open, the boundary between interior and exterior space dissolves, allowing the ma-jority of the second floor to function as one large shared hybrid space with elements of the shared program appearing to float with-in a sprawling rooftop garden.

This flexible glazing condition allows the musician’s workspace to be opened to this entertaining space, thereby permitting him to play for guests throughout the residence.

Composite: Topographic Striations as Connective Tissue Embedded Program

The first of a series of proposals for Piazza Flavio Biondo and the Stazione Trastevere in Rome, Italy, this project aims to reconnect the currently discontinuous urban fabric through the use of topographic striations that bridge the three sectional levels of the intersection. Recalling the natural topography that was eroded in the process of urban development, a topographic surface provides much needed recreational and assembly space while responding to site forces including traffic flow, changes in elevation, and the surrounding context. This two week test project incorporates the research conducted throughout the semester pertaining to the creation of public space in the context of contemporary Rome.

An alternative solution to the previous pro-posal, this scheme enfolds various pro-grammatic elements, circulation space, and below grade parking within a system of stratified louvers. The articulation of the system allows both sides of this surface to be programmed as the louvers simul-taneously shade the commercial elements located within while subdividing the previ-ously indeterminate Piazza into a series of recreational and assembly areas respond-ing to the needs of the surrounding neigh-borhoods.

Media Facade

Challenging the traditional horizontal pro-grammatic configuration of a performing arts center, this proposal aims to re-exam-ine the relationship between the performer and the audience. The ground plane is lib-erated by elevating the program, thereby creating a covered plaza linking St. Charles Avenue (a major circulation artery for both public transportation and automobile traf-fic) to the exiting cultural corridor on Camp Street, thereby exploiting the close proxim-ity of the Contemporary Arts Center and Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Non-linear circulation paths and skip-stop elevator lobbies encourages performers and visitors to interact in a manner that transcends their traditional roles. Inter-weaving back of house / production facili-ties with public spaces creates a real time exhibition to support the Museum of Perfor-mance Anthropology that is integrated into the breakout spaces that occur on each skip-stop elevator level.

Performance data collected from the city of New Orleans is synthesized and displayed on an interactive media facade that forms a shell around the main auditorium.

Rather than relegating parking, often con-sidered to be among the most mundane of support functions, to a subterranean garage (a programmatic proposition unto itself given the relatively precarious hydro-logical condition of New Orleans), an auto-mated parking system distributes vehicles throughout the structure.

Task: Create a strategic plan and urban design framework for the development of a “low-carbon” new town in LongPao, China.

Positioned across the Yangtze River from the regional economic center of Nanjing and benefitting from increased connectivity with the completion of a new cross-Yangtze River bridge, LongPao has the potential to become a premier site for redevelopment in Lower Yangtze Delta Region.

With its regional infrastructure connections and potential to serve as the gateway to the new “ecotourism corridor” linking Nanjing to the Golden Ox Lake and the Mt. Ping National Forest, LongPao has the potential to serve as a launchpad for subsequent green development projects in the area, thereby presenting an alternative to the chemical production facilities traditionally associated with the Lower Yangtze Delta.

Regional Positioning

Working in collaboration with the American Planning Association, the TRUDC created a conceptual master plan for the redevelopment of LongPao as a low-carbon city to accommodate 250,000 new residents while attracting green industry and creating a high standard of living for both new and old residents.

Capitalizing an existing amenities, technological innovation, progressive planning strategies, and incentives favoring the development of sustain-able green industries, LongPao can be developed as a ‘low carbon’ new town appealing to both domestic and international corporations.

By concentrating new development in a band located between the existing agricul-tural landscape and prominent river ecol-ogy, the strategy complements the natural and constructed ecologies of the canal-lined farmland that currently defines the site.

Ecological remediation, sustainable com-munity initiatives, and economic develop-ment are primary concerns in the articula-tion of the project.

Land use, a comprehensive phasing strat-egy, and the integration of transportation infrastructure coalesce to form a vibrant, livable community serving both new and old residents while exploiting the full poten-tial of the site.

As part of the competition team for Manning Architect’s winning entry for a corporate headquarters and associated housing development in La-gos, Nigeria, my duties included collaborative development of the design, translating conceptual sketches into presentation drawings and digital Rhino or SketchUp models, comprehensive schematic drawing sets for housing prototypes, representation of sustainability strategies, creation of 3D digital Rhino models at both conceptual massing and building detail scales (indicating HVAC components, variations in louver patterns cor-responding to the solar strategy, etc.), coordination with international partners and consultants, assisting with final document compilation, general logistical issues, and final presentation board layout.

Based on the archetypal New Orleans shotgun house (historically the predominant housing type in the city), this collaboration between Frank Gehry, Robert Tannen of Creative Industry, and Manning Architects was to create a modular housing prototype for Post-Katrina New Orleans that would be simultaneously affordable, sustainable, and amenable to the historic urban fabric of the city. My involvement included materials research (SIPS, screening options, etc), LEED point calculation, CAD-based line drawings (plans, elevations, and sections), and the preparation of press release documents and publication images for Architectural Record, the White Linen Night art festival in New Orleans, and local news agencies.

Affordable Construction

The Project uses pre-fabricated. modular componenets to create a three bed-room, single family house that will be both affordable and designed to sustain the 140 mph winds required by local building codes.

New Orleans Context

The design is a modern interpretastion of a 19th Century New Orleans historic shotgun house. By working with the Historic District Landmarks Commission, the project will be designed with historic building proportions and window sizes that will be compatible with most neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Sustainability

The project employs “green” strategies to design a home with a holistic ap-proach that takes into consideration the life cycle costs of the house over time. The project specifically addresses the New Orleans region with a com-bination of natural cross-ventilation cooling strategies and a high-efficiency mechanical HVAC system.

History of ModGun

Robert Tannen of Creative Industrydeveloped the modular shotgun,ModGun, shortly after the storm. Geared towards incorporating sustainability, affordability, andpreservation of traditional architectural styles, the ModGunyielded a model that would best facilitate the return of New Orleansresidents displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The original, full-scaleModGun was built by Tannen, JoelRoss and Chris Meehan and was presented at the Ogden Museumof Southern Art in August of 2008.

In order to further develop the ModGun design, Tannen invitedrenowned architect Frank Gehry tocontribute design ideas. Their collaboration produced the Gehry -Tannen ModGun, an innovative yetreplicable and affordable designbased on that of the traditional New Orleans shotgun. The Gehry - Tannen ModGun sparked the interest of a local developer, Hal Brown of Fortuné Developers LLC, who was to become the lead developer partner of the project. Fortuné Developers provides affordable workforce housing financed by the Faubourg Fund.

As an effort to focus on sustainability and the project’s contextuality to both the city and climate, Tannen contacted Manning Architects, an USGBC member architecture firm that offers sustainable design services, to be responsible for final design services. Global Green USA was also brought in to collaborate on the project as the “green advisor” to provide sustainable, ecologically conscious features to the ModGun project.

The result of the collaborative effort of the team is the ModGun, a design based on a 14’ square building block with 13’ ceiling heights that provides affordable, sustainable housing that fits into the historic context of New Orleans.

DesCours | RendezvousDesCours is an annual ten day art and ar-chitecture festival held in New Orleans each December.

From the DesCours website: “This event invites internationally renowned architects and artists to create ten architecture instal-lations within ‘hidden’ locations in the heart of New Orleans, including private court-yards, rooftops, abandoned buildings and walkways, all locations normally unseen, inaccessible or unused by the public.”

Rendezvous is an interactive installation that explores the relationships between spatial planes, creating a singular 3-dimen-sional experience. The translucent canopy is made of an aggregate of vinyl compo-nents, joined together by an overlapping of material, similar to a formation of migrating birds. Rendezvous is a place for people to gather, a specific place and time for peo-ple to assemble and present themselves. Shadows cast by the movement of people through the project create a dynamic and constantly changing space.

Located in the Mission Bay Redevelopment Area just south of downtown San Francisco, the design for the salesforce.com Global Headquarters campus was to include approximately 2.2 million SF of Class A Office Space, ground floor commercial space, a fitness center, childcare facilities, and signature restaurants distributed over 8 city blocks and a central town square. Targeting LEED Platinum Certification, the project was designed around a series of integrated high-performance systems, including a chilled beam HVAC system, massive solar array, and gray water recycling system. The buildings also incorporate a SidePlate moment frame structural system.
