Robert Bateman

Dozing Lynx The Dozing Lynx is my favorite painting of Robert Bateman. This painting is oil cyclic done on canvas in 1999. It reflects the chilliness of winter when the lynx is napping in the front of a cave of ice. The hollowness of the cave and the chilling snow are not shown by the absolute color of white or black. This painting is based on about 50 photos taken by the painter. Because of Robert's job as a geographic and art teacher ,he is very familiar with the natural world. Even though the painting is based on photos ,filled with the artist’s thoughts it may not look like any of the photo at all, but far more beautiful. He uses small strokes to restore reality of this painting.

The painter of this piece is Robert Bateman. It is painted at the year 1999.This is piece of realism art is based on over 50 different photos. The roughness of the rock cliff contrasts with the leopard’s soft fur. The spacing of this painting is shown by air. The shades are not absolutely black. This painting is done on oil

canvas. This leopard is plunging down this cliff, it would be only seconds before the animal would be upon you. I like this painting because it instills a feeling of discomfort and a temptation of the movement of this cat’s muscle and bones.Rockface-Leopard

Emily Carr

Page 6: Kevin xu's Art project

The name of this painting is cedar sanctuary. This one of my favorite Emily Carr’s painting because of its simplicity and strong movement. This painting is painted by Emily Carr in the 1937. It is Oil on canvas, 77.2 x 102.3 cm. The nature of Emily Carr's paintings are modernism. They mostly expresses a rich tone of colour using vibrant color pallets. The spacing of the painting is unorthodox and the tone of the gravel is a brown and yellowish hue. The style of this painting is not realistic but it gives me an idea of the gravel pit and the sky beautifully. The movement of the sky and cloud is expressed vividly in a exaggerate way.

Indian Church is one of Emily Carr’s masterpiece. It is oil on canvas, and owned by Art Gallery of Ontario. This painting is combined with post modernism and modernism. The various shades of green and the white church gives a strong contrast. It also brings out a mysterious loneliness that the church is standing alone In the woods. I like this painting because even though the style of her stroke is so rough, i still like the color and the meaning of this painting.

Vintage Butterfly Print

This is another exotic print from Bill Reid. This picture of a butterfly is assembled with eagle, whales, dogfish, chief teaching a child and a women in the middle. The woman in the middle represents a First Nation’s Spirit that had been repressed for years, opening her wing and freeing us from our past and starting a new age. Bill revolutionizes his Haida art with new components and designs. I’m attracted by its simple pattern and color while showing a strong cultural background.

Vintage Haida Raven Print

This Haida Raven print by Bill Reid is a serigraph on paper print in 1973. It is collected by the Vancouver Art Gallery, This piece of art is strongly influenced by Bill Reid's knowledge about his aboriginal homage. It is a piece of traditional Haida raven print using the three essential aboriginal color. It is a picture of a raven with several different kinds of animals in it. The shapes of animals are put together with circles lines and squares. I like this print because it is quite simple but full of life. It is a memorable piece of aboriginal art.
