Contracts for Heavier Goods Accepted. En-tailing Many Changes.
IBT TELrGRAP » TO THE TnißrNl.'.]1nil River, 'Mass.. April 2?.—lt is estimated that
the 8alPs of Cl°th of the last week were in excessor loO.COO pieces, some brokers believing that atleast i<a,ooo pieces were disposed of. The price of»-lnch M:C?OS| Jrop td to 22l5«-.l 5«-. but the 27-inch goodsor me same texture are KUins at the same figure.regulars were not sold and the quotation remainsnominally at 2 n.Mc. Wide good- are firm and infair demand.
The feature of the trading in this market for thelast two weeks haa been the acceptance of con-tracts for heavier goods than the mills usuallyproduce. Not leas than 40.CW pieces of goods madeirom yarns ranging from J}s
-to 2ts were sold with-
in a few days and the disposition is strong to ac-cept more orders, if offered on the basis of aboutISe a pound. The manufacture of these goods en-tails many changes, but in most local mills theelasticity of production has Income so great thatit is not impracticable to make fabrics from 203 toMa yarns In mills supposed commonly to be woundup strictly for printing cloths. In the absence ofa profitable demand for the common printers'poods made from an average of 28a and 30s yarnsmanufacturers have taken advantage of the strongdemand fVr export products and the inability ormany Southern mills to meet prices on domesticcoarse goods to accept some orders for deliveryextending through the summer.
The mills are being helped out in ways other thanthe disposal of goods. The carding facilities arenot great enough to permit print cloth mills tokeep product enough ahead to supply all the loomsand all the spinning. But, as there is an ac-knowledged scarcity of operatives in these depart-ments, the new goods otter the mills opportunityto turn out a Cull product from the preparatorydepartments. Tfee local mills v.,11 not tillall theirlooms with orders for those goods, 1 it several con-cerns are willing to put a few hundred looms onto them tor the present. Another notabie featureof the trading has been the freedom with whichlocal mills nave accented orders for shirtings inthe gray. They are not handling the fancy coloredfabrics save in the case of the Barnaby Mills, butfully 1,000 looms are making wide varieties ofdobby product! to be finished later, and the tend-ency to Increase the business in this line Is shownin many ways.
