the results very closely each day. He was no doubt thrilled to see that Nanoq won Race 3 on Tuesday with Anders Myralf on the helm and Volvo Ocean Race veteran Bouwe Bekking calling tactics.

“We wish Frederik was here to enjoy this win with us, but we understand that he has to take care of his official work as prince,” Myralf said.

Nanoq’s crew has not sailed together since the Farr 40 European Championship in Sardinia so that is why Prince Frederik felt it was important for the boat to race at Key West. Tuesday’s victory brought some positive reinforcement about Nanoq’s new rig setup.

“We had a very good start, hit the first couple shifts and rounded the first mark just ahead of Joe Fly. We then had a very good downwind leg and were able to extend

the lead to five boat lengths at the bottom mark. We just covered the fleet from there,” Myralf said.

Barking Mad, skippered by Jim Richardson of Newport, RI, rallied from last in the 12-boat fleet to fifth in a race for the second straight day and is fourth overall.

MELGES 24 AND MELGES 32John Kilroy and his team aboard Samba Pa Ti had

a superb day on the water and vaulted from third to first in the Melges 32 class, largest of the regatta with 22 boats. Stu Bannatyne is calling tactics while fellow pro Morgan Reeser is trimming the main for Kilroy, who won Race 4 and placed fourth in Race 3 to move ahead of Monday leader Ramrod (Rod Jabin, Annapolis, MD.) by a point.

“We had confidence in our boat speed based off of yesterday so today wanted to have good clean starts so we could get clear lanes,” Kilroy said. “We were seventh at the last mark in the first race and rallied to get a fourth. We got a great start in the second race and were able to just extend and extend. Stu did a great job on tactics today while Morgan and Sam Rogers did a great job of trimming.”

This is only the fifth Melges 32 event for Kilroy, who has competed in Key West with a Farr 40 and a TP52 among other designs. The Malibu, CA resident loves the exciting sport-boat and said the competition in the class is intense.

“This fleet is so close that one small mistake can cost you 10 or 15 boats. It’s the outhouse or the penthouse and you just have to try to stay in between and hope to be there at the end,” he said.

There is a new leader in the 21-boat Melges 24 class as well with Alan Field and his WTF team moving into a tie with UKA UKA Racing. Former College of Charleston All-American Steve Hunt is calling tactics for Field, a California resident who won Race 3 on Tuesday then tacked on a fourth in Race 4.

“It’s pretty shifty out there so it’s important to be in the front row and able to control your own destiny. Alan won the start (in Race 3) and that allowed me to play the shifts better,” said Hunt, who spent seven years mounting an Olympic campaign in 470 class. “Our boat speed is pretty decent and we really improved our tack-ing today.”

WTF finished a somewhat disappointing 11th at the Melges 24 Worlds in October and Hunt admitted a win in Key West would help ease the sting of that result. “At the Worlds Alan had a little trouble getting off the line, but here in Key West he is starting the boat much better, which makes a huge difference.”

UKA UKA Racing, the Italian entry owned by Lorenzo Santini and helmed by Lorenzo Bressani, now has an impressive series line of 2-1-2-5. Tactician Jonathan McKee, a Seattle native, said strategy and boat-handling have been paramount in the shifty conditions. “It’s not really about boat speed and

much more about positioning,” he said. “Today was less shifty than yesterday, but it still wasn’t totally obvious which side of the course was favored.”

IRC 1 AND IRC 2 Bella Mente and Pugwash extended their leads in IRC

1 and 2, respectively, with a second straight strong day of racing. Bella Mente, a Reichel-Pugh 69-footer owned by Hap Fauth of Newport, R.I., has sailed very impres-sively in winning all four races.

“We are coming off a very successful summer season in Europe in which we won the Med Cup and several other regattas. Right now, the crew is on top of its game and we are getting the most we can out of the boat,”

David Murphy took delivery of his J/122 Pugwash in June and promptly won four of the initial seven events he entered. The New York resident is well on the way to adding another notch to the boat’s belt at Key West 2010, having finished first or second in all four races in IRC 2 class so far. North Sails professional Larry Leonard is serving as tactician aboard Pugwash, which is named for a city in Nova Scotia or the British cartoon character depending on what story Murphy likes to tell. Crew members can be seen hiking on the rail in this shot as Murphy steers Pugwash during an upwind leg on Tuesday.

Nerone has done quite well in three previous trips to Key West - placing fourth in 2008, seventh in 2007 and eighth in 2006. Two days into Key West 2010, presented by Nautica, the Italian entry appears poised to post its best result yet. Skipper Massimo Mezzaroma and crew hold second place in the 13-boat Farr 40 class after performing extremely well on Tuesday. Tactician Vasco Vascotto called the shifts well as Nerone won Race 4 and placed third in Race 3 to jump from sixth to second in the overall standings. That strong effort in one of the regatta's most competitive classes earned Nerone the Sperry Top-Sider Boat of the Day award. From left to right, Sperry Top-Sider Field Service Coordinator Monica Turnbull and Director of Marketing join Division 1 principal race officer Ken Legler in presenting the Boat of the Day trophy to Nerone boat captain Massimo Bortoletto.

KEY WEST 2010 Wednesday, January 20, 2010 7

Fauth said. Pugwash owner David Murphy looked quite content

on Tuesday afternoon as he ate finger sandwiches and sipped green labeled beer aboard his Lyman-Morse 90-foot motor yacht, berthed at the end of the Galleon docks. Murphy deserved to enjoy happy hour after opening Key West 2010 with a stellar line of 2-1-1-2. The New York resident is a newcomer to competitive sailboat racing who has enjoyed tremendous early success.

Pugwash, a J/122 based in Newport, RI, has won four of the seven events it has entered since Murphy took delivery in June. North Sails professional Larry Leonard is calling tactics for Murphy, who is looking to add Key West to his impressive list of victories that includes Chester Race Week and the Edgartown Round the Island Race.

“All the credit goes to the crew. Larry is the mas-termind while our trimmers are terrific. I’m just kind of like Forrest Gump. I just focus on driving the boat,” Murphy said.

J/105 AND J/80 Savasana stretched its lead in J/105 class with a fourth

and a second on Tuesday as skipper Brian Keane looks to repeat as winner of Key West. Mike Danish is serving as tactician for Keane, who praised the performance of second-place Ghost and said Savasana has to keep putting up good results.

“Ghost sailed great today and certainly is pushing us,”

Keane said. “Ideally, our goal is to finish in the top five of every race and win each day. It’s all about avoiding the big mistake.”

Also giving Savasana a competitive edge is the fact that the crew has been sailing together for years. On land and on the water, these guys are always talking

tactics and strategy, and it pays. “The communication is excellent on the boat. One of the unique things about Key West is that it always attracts sailors from all over and the caliber and quality of the competition is excep-tional. ” Keane noted.

The top three boats in the class lead a 4-way tie currently between Damien Emery's Eclipse, Bill Zartler's Solaris, Scooter Simmons Blackhawk and Gerrit Schulze's Max Power. Solaris, won race three following a seventh-place in race two. Chris Lewis was calling tac-tics. “We worked the left and had good boat speed,” Lewis said. “Then Ghost overtook us. On the last run, we faked a gybe.” A smart move forced Ghost into a real gybe and gave Solaris a clear lane to the finish.

Rising to fourth in class, Key West vet Eclipse is at the top of the four-boat tie. Damian Emery’s New York based entry slipped over early in race three and lost ground, which set them back to tenth place. In race four, Eclipse

made an excellent come back and notched a bullet. “We basically got off the line clean,” Emery said. “Then we were able to cross the rest of the fleet and go in the direction we wanted.”

Junius Grimes’ Charleston based Absolutely! is com-peting in its first Key West. “We all started sailing together for the sole purpose of having a great time and getting out on the water,” Grimes noted about the Charleston based crew. A minor rig issue prevented them from finishing

race four, but with careful repairs, the team is optimistic to be back in top racing form for today's racing.

North professional Will Welles holds the lead in J/80 class for the second straight day despite an eighth in Race 4. On Tuesday, there was some shuffling among the top slots and a tie for points for second place between

Little Feat and Le Tigre. Jeff Johnstone’s Little Feat rose from 8th place on Monday to second overall, with a pair of bullets on Tuesday to close within one point of Welles and the Rascal team. .

Johnstone may be with the company that designs the boat, but admitted even he can learn new tricks on the race course after finishing seventh in both races on Monday. “It was one of those things where you had to go left, but you couldn’t bite off more than you could chew,” Jeff Johnstone said, referring to how he played the shifts a bit differently on Tuesday.

The dramatic improvement was due to some smart sailing and watching how the wind influenced the first two classes that started before the J/80s. “We were more focused on the wind,” Jeff Johnstone said. “We never did any high risk things, since yesterday’s risks had backfired. If you got too greedy, you’d get stuck in the corner,” Johnstone explained. “We learned from our mistakes yesterday.” Little Feat’s close-knit crew consists mostly of family, including family friend, Kelly Arabia who trimmed the jib while Jeff Johnstone’s daughter Rachel called the waves. Jeff’s sister Ashley and father, Rod Johnstone, round out the crew.

Division 3 Multihull

Unable to resist the excitement, the dolphins were back on Division 3 to join the fleet at the starting line. In the multihull fleet, trimaran vet Bob Harkrider (Sarasota, FL) and his team accumulated two more first-place finishes for a perfect score with his Gulfstream 35, Merlin. “We were able to get her in the groove and keep her there,” Harkrider said after Monday’s win. “She’s a whole lot more boat.” Merlin had clean starts and snagged the right shifts. Doug Fisher of Ullman Sails was onboard and contributing his renowned expertise. “They’re excel-lent,” Harkrider said about his top-notch crew. Merlin is

Skipper James Bishop is focused on steering while the jib trimmer keeps a close eye on the sail shape as Gold Digger sails upwind on Tuesday. The Rhode Island-based J/44 posted a second and a third on Tuesday to move into fifth in the overall standings within IRC 2 class.

Chris Lewis is calling tactics and is pleased by the high quality of the competition in Key West. “The J/10s are very good fleet racing,” Zartler said. “The starts were good and the boats were all lined up neatly.”

International teams UpdateOne of the more interesting and unique elements of the annual race week at Key

West involves the International Team Competition for the Nautica Watches Trophy. Event director Peter Craig introduced the country versus country component to the regatta in 1997 after noticing a dramatic increase in foreign entries.

“What was loosely modeled after the Admiral’s Cup in Cowes, England has become a Key West tradition,” Craig said. “We have found that the International Team Competition unites teams and crews who would not normally see each other on the race course.”

The formula is simple with each participating country fielding a team comprised of boats in three separate one-design classes – Farr 40, Melges 32 and Melges 24. Italia 2, comprised of UKA UKA Racing (Melges 24), Mascalzone Latino (Farr 40) and Bitipi (Melges 32), captured the International Team Competition last year.

The battle for bragging rights and the Nautica Watches Trophy figure to be intense again at Key West 2010 with several strong teams entered. Italy 1, which features a pair of class leaders in UKA UKA Racing and Joe Fly, holds first place in the International Team Competition with a low score of 38 points. Owner Lorenzo Santini has UKA UKA Racing in first place of the Melges 24 class while skipper Giovanni Maspero has helmed Joe Fly to first in Farr 40. Rounding out the team is Calvi Network, which Carlo Alberini has steered to fourth place in Melges 32.

Italy 2 holds second in the standings with 51 points on the strength of a second place performance in Farr 40 by Nerone (Massimo Mezzaroma). Blu Moon (Franco Rossini) stands third in Melges 24 while Fantastika (Lanfranco Cirillo) complete the team.

Scandinavia, which has all three of its boats holding either fifth or sixth place in their respective classes, stands third in the International Team Competition. There are a total of 27 foreign entries representing 13 different countries at Key West 2010, which has enabled Premiere Racing to field nine international teams.

Partner: Holmatro Marine equipmentProduct: New Aluminum Extreme Winch Handle

After extensive use in the one design ‘Extreme 40’ class and testing by some of the best teams in the world, Holmatro is proud to introduce its Aluminum Extreme Winch Handle. The lightweight winch handle has a grab-bar along the lower half of the top surface which releases the locking mechanism. This next generation locking mechanism automatically retracts when inserting the winch handle eliminat-ing the need to press the grab-bar.

Because the handle is forged, not cast, it is stronger with much less weight than other metal winch handles. The handle is available in two sizes, eight inch and ten inch, and three grip types: single grip, double grip and power grip (pictured). All grips have hybrid composite bearings for maximum efficiency and performance.

These winch handles will be available in the US later this spring but one can be seen, along with our new winches, during race week in the partner exhibit area.

CPR/aED & Basic First aid SeminarPresented by Sail 22 Trainer: Becky DaMore, CNP

Did you know that if you have a heart attack and an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is used within the first five minutes your chance of survival increases by 80%? Would you know what to do with one in an emergency? And have you looked in your sailing first aid kit recently? Do you even know what is in it? Check out some essentials every boat should have for racing and learn the basics about AEDs in this hands-on seminar. (There are five AEDs on site throughout race week-one on each division’s signal boat and two shoreside.)

Spanish Castle to White Knight (video)An afternoon at the movies courtesy of Volvo Ocean Race

Completing the Volvo Ocean Race is a supreme human achievement — only a frac-tion of the sailors that started from the ramparts of Alicante’s castle sailed all of the 37,000 miles to the finish in St. Petersburg. The handful that did have been through every emotion, their human story intertwined with the raw elements of nature and the extraordinary technology on which their survival depends. Grab some popcorn and a cold beer and take in the official highlights DVD charting the highs and lows of the incredible 2008-09 edition of the VOR, where the boats were literally pushed to breaking point.

Sip your morning coffee on the beach and catch a spectacular sunrise. Enjoy a delicious burger while you’re lounging in the sun. Have a romantic

candlelight dinner overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. And indulge in a nightcap before you say goodnight. Unlike any other restaurant in Key West, this is open air oceanfront dining at its best. Come experience breakfast, lunch & dinner seven days a week from 8 am to 10 pm at Southernmost Beach Café.

five points above second place finisher, Tobiko, Tim Britton’s Corsair Sprint 33 trimaran (Peru, VT). “We didn’t miss a shift all day and kept good boat speed,” noted Tobiko tactician Johnathan Farrar. “We’re just loving Key West.”

PHRF 1Stark Raving Mad IV, James Madden’s J/125 (Oyster Bay, NY), opened up his lead

with two more bullets and added more points between them and John Edwards’ Farr 30, Rhumb Punch. Stark Raving Mad IV’s crew of friends is a blend of pros and amateurs who’ve been racing together for several years. Their starts were tricky, but they always seemed to recover and blast past the fleet. “We were having a hard time slowing the boat down!” tactician Gary Weisman said. “It was fun to sail the shifts upwind and we did well on the beats in general. The boats behind us mixed it up a bit.” Stark Raving Mad IV’s strong lead will give them some elbow room and the luxury to sail conservatively on Wednesday.

Currently in third place is Bill Titus and his team on Act One (Newport, RI). In some tight sailing, Act One is tied on points with sistership Marinerscove, the entry from The Royal Cork Yacht Club. “The Irish boat is very well sailed,” said Act One helmsman Charlie Milligan. “It’s a brand new boat and we’re still learning it.” Talk about new; Act One is Hull No. 1 and Marinerscove is Hull No. 2.

PHRF 2Bill Sweetser’s Rush, stole the show and placed first on Tuesday, finishing just two

points above Bluto on corrected time. “We improved our boat speed in the second race,” said trimmer/mid-crew Greg Oczkowski about Rush’s 4-1 day. “Our tactician kept us in phase through the shifty conditions so we were dialed in by the afternoon.” The Rush team is happy to be at Race Week. “Anytime you’re in Key West, it’s definitely competitive racing,” Oczkowski concluded.

Continued from page 7.

J/80 Little Feat made waves with a notable recovery from eighth place on Monday (7-7) to second place silver with two bullets on Tuesday. Their turnaround was attributed to learning from Monday’s mistakes and playing the right shifts without getting cornered. “It was one of those things where you had to go left, but you couldn’t bite off more than you can chew,” Jeff Johnstone explained.
