Why ‘It’s Not OK to Be Late to School’ Since commencing at Lynbrook at the start of the year, I have been both surprised and concerned at the high incidence of students arriving at the school aſter the 9.00am commencement me. In many cases, repeat offenders are making up the large majority of late arrivals. I realise that unavoidable lateness can occur due to circumstances beyond the child’s or parent’s control. However, students being repeatedly late suggests to me the issue isn’t unavoidable and the lateness is being caused by poor rounes at home or a lack of understanding of the importance of being punctual to school. The large majority of future employers are not going to tolerate late arrival at work and it is a dangerous habit for students to be geng into. Extensive evidence concludes being regularly late for school has a detrimental effect on a child’s learning and social development. As such, Lynbrook Primary School closely monitors lateness and has developed responses, policies and procedures where repeated lateness occur. This week and next week leers will be sent home to students who have been late to school on several occasions this year. This inial acon is being taken to alert parents and stress the seriousness of the issue. It is strongly recommended that students are at school by 8.55am each morning. Most importantly, this allows them to be seled in the classroom by 9.00am with their home readers returned, work space organised (eg. pencil cases out, workbooks ready, etc) and other rounes completed. Other reasons why being at school late disadvantages your child are outlined below. Why ‘It’s Not OK to Be Late to School’

Since commencing at Lynbrook at the start of the year, I have been both surprised and concerned at the high incidence of students arriving at the school after the 9.00am commencement time. In many cases, repeat offenders are making up the large majority of late arrivals. I realise that unavoidable lateness can occur due to circumstances beyond the child’s or parent’s control. However, students being repeatedly late suggests to me the issue isn’t unavoidable and the lateness is being caused by poor routines at home or a lack of understanding of the importance of being punctual to school. The large majority of future employers are not going to tolerate late arrival at work and it is a dangerous habit for students to be getting into. Extensive evidence concludes being regularly late for school has a detrimental effect on a child’s learning and social development. As such, Lynbrook Primary School closely monitors lateness and has developed responses, policies and procedures where repeated lateness occur. This week and next week letters will be sent home to students who have been late to school on several occasions this year. This initial action is being taken to alert parents and stress the seriousness of the issue. It is strongly recommended that students are at school by 8.55am each morning. Most importantly, this allows them to be settled in the classroom by 9.00am with their home readers returned, work space organised (eg. pencil cases out, workbooks ready, etc) and other routines completed. Other reasons why being at school late disadvantages your child are outlined below. Latecomers:

lesson of the day particularly miss out on reading and writing learning time find learning becomes disjointed and difficult tend not to see being late as a problem miss out on talking to their class teacher before school miss out on playing with other children before school miss out on roll marking, lunch orders being sent to the

canteen and taking monies/notices to the office – and their notices and lunch orders often stay in their school bag

miss out on learning time when they take their lunch order to the canteen and monies/notices to the office

can arrive at their classroom, find that their class has moved or gone to specialist lessons and not know where to find their grade or waste time wandering the school searching for their grade

are failing to take responsibility for their learning distract other students when they arrive need to have instructions repeated and/or locate work-

sheets or materials before they can begin working need extra attention so that they know what has happened
