WHICH COURSE DO I CHOOSE?

5

How many subjects do I study?

On an A level programme, you will have 3 main subjects.

On a BTEC programme, you study 1 subject throughout

the 2 years

Before you can decide which subjectsyou would like to study, you need toconsider which type of course you wouldlike to take. The two options at KGV areA levels or BTEC Extended NationalDiplomas: both are full time, level 3, twoyear programmes which can lead tostudy at University, job opportunities orapprenticeships.

Do I have to complete coursework or take exams?

A level subjects are mainly exam based although some subjects have coursework

elements.

BTEC subjects are totally courseworkbased with no exams.

What GCSE grades do I need?

For an A level programme, you need 5 A* to B grades at GCSE or equivalent: 4 grades should come from actual GCSEs. You should also have at least a grade C in either Maths or English Language.

For a BTEC programme, you need 5 A* to C grades at GCSE or equivalent: 3 grades should come from actual GCSEs

including GCSE C grade in either Maths or English Language OrA merit in a relevant BTEC level 2 Diploma and GCSE

C grade in either Maths or English

Page 7: KGV Prospectus 2014/15

6

Can I take a mixture of A level and

BTEC courses?KGV offers 2 BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas in

Health and Social Care and Music Technology. These are the equivalent

of 1 A level and can be studied within the A level programme.

Do I need anything else?

Some subjects on both programmeshave further qualification or skill

requirements. These are explained oneach of the subject pages in this

prospectus.

It is important to gain as much information andadvice as possible. Come and talk to us whenwe visit your school from Year 9 onwards, try outsome of the courses available during Year 10taster days and also visit College during one ofour Open Evenings. These will all give you anidea of what KGV is like but also make use of theteachers and Careers Advisors at your ownschool to help you make informed decisions. What if I just

can’t decide?Don’t panic! Pick subjects which you think

you would do well at and also enjoy: the more youenjoy a subject, the better you are likely to do. If youhave an idea of long term career plans, it is also worth

investigating what subjects may be needed to gain a place on a relevant University course or training scheme. We talk through subject choices during your coursediscussion ... and you can change your mind both at

that stage and until the end of the summer term.

Which subjects go well together?

The subject pages in this prospectus willgive you some ideas of suitable combinations of subjects. It is also worth considering the skills you will gain and the type of assessment used:some subjects develop your essay writing abilitiesto a higher level, some increase your ability to

analyse effectively and others are more practical in nature.

Page 8: KGV Prospectus 2014/15

We asked our students what the biggest changewas when moving from high school to KGV andalmost every student mentioned their new foundindependence!

At KGV, we believe that independence is animportant trait to develop whilst you study with us.When you arrive here, you are regarded as a youngadult and are given the freedom to make your owndecisions when it comes to managing your workand behaviour. But don’t worry, although you’reexpected to act more responsibly, you are notalone and we have a strong network of support foryou to access should you need it.

yOur STuDy DAyAn important aspect of your new independence isyour Study Day, a day once a week when you donot have any timetabled lessons. This day isdifferent for both first and second years and it isup to you how you use it.

Many students travel into College on thecoach as normal and make use of theresources in our Learning Centre or meetwith teachers to discuss their work.Others prefer to study at home.Enrichment activities or revisionworkshops may be scheduled on thestudy day and you can also enhance yourCV by organising a 6 week work placement through our Careers team. If you’re up to date with your studies you can schedule in some well-deserved R&R but remember that if there are any concerns with yourwork, you will be requested to attend College on the study day until we see an improvement.

OTHEr CHANGES TO GETuSED TOOne of the biggest things you will notice at KGV isthe lack of bells ringing through our corridors!Unlike school, we expect you to time manageyourself and move between lessons without anoisy reminder. You are also asked to call yourteachers by their first names…no more Sir or Miss! This takes some getting used to but our studentshave said it helps them develop a closerrelationship with staff and feel more comfortablewhen asking for help or advice.

The work is harder and moreintense, however the staff are very good atguiding you through the work without doingit all for you.

WHAT MADE yOu PICKKGV?I didn’t want to attend a college that wasalready attached to a High School therefore,as KGV is the only independent sixth-formcollege in Southport, I applied straightaway. Ultimate Frisbee is anew craze within College and I haveparticipated in this on numerous occasions. It is another way to keep active and developskills. Badminton is one of my main sportsand we often set up our own badmintoncourt in the Sports Hall during our freeperiods. I sometimes coach my classmatesand anyone else that turns up, but theemphasis is to have fun and relax and thatis what we do.

All these enrichments have been veryvaluable, as I use sports as a copingmechanism when I have lots of work do toand need to let off steam.

WHAT IS yOurfAVOurITE ASPECT OfTHE BTEC SPOrTCOurSE?My relationship with the course staff. Ithelps when completing assignments, asthey are supportive, encouraging andalways want me to achieve my best. I amvery grateful for their guidance throughoutthis year.
