Following our meeting last week we discussed

a number of potential areas that we felt might make interesting starting points for our input.

We have outlined these areas below and presented broad ideas that could serve as the

beginnings of initial investigations.

We would like to investigate

the

function

of

colour

in

the

external and internal environment to understand the significance of colour

choices so far, potential for colours to directly influence the ways in which the building is read as a series of experiences.

Colour Changes

Colour can change through

responsive

pigments/inks

applied to surfaces or objects. Thermochromatic inks, UV responsive inks, phase change

materials could pick out key features of the school environment as a product of their function.

The scale of lighting, and

pattern

of

lighting

could

have

a dramatic impact on the image of the school itself as an abstract image or a series

of sharply defined spaces or through changing projected image.

eg: Tilberthwaite Touchstone Fold.

The stone/brick/slate wall that forms the new boundary may be a series of dovetailed opportunities to incorporate found objects, legacy objects

from

the

old

buildings

or

re

interpret the natural material heritage of Pennine Lancs.

Making pockets/niche spaces in walls to include found/made objects from the schools history a manifest time capsule recording

could present opportunities to subvert/augment balustrades, stairs, furniture and fittings.

Taking some of the strong architectural elements of the design and pushing their

potential to transform the space. Possibly to adapt the strong red horizontal balcony,; introducing some organic playfulness juxtaposed with the cartesian interior.

Key approaches might be;

Consideration of a materials palette unlike anyother in the school to create an entirelydifferent atmosphere..(wooden floor, whitewalls, meditative quality, materials that willendure time).

Considering the light as it enters the space,the use of light sensors to trigger a lightingpiece if the light is low outside.

How to animate the inside walls of the ceiling,

with a light piece or by etching the roof light tointroduce

Can the light play with the floorscape, asundial etc?

Can the outside of the pod also be a surprisingand unexpected intervention within the space.Projections, reflective, using paint andpattern?

Bespoke FurnitureConsidering non catalogue

furniture that could be equally as robust and affordable as catalogue furniture but executed with flair and imagination and as a bespoke response to the school and community.
