Fall Foods and Healthy Recipes - APPLES!

Fall is here and we are headed into the eating season. For the next few months, you’ll be surrounded by Halloween candy, Thanksgiving leftovers and holiday treats. While it is okay to eat these foods in moderation, you shouldn’t eat them all the time. There are alternatives to help you stay healthy during the eating season, such as apples. Apples are a popular fruit that come in a variety of tastes and colors. They are a wonderful source of Vitamin C, which helps your body fight those icky, sticky germs. When looking for a healthy snack, you can’t go wrong with a delicious apple.

Directions:

1) Wash apples, cut in half, and remove core (ask an adult to help you with a spoon).

2) Place apples in a baking dish.

3) Spread honey, juice, and nuts in center and over top.

4) Bake in microwave on high for three to five minutes or until tender.

5) Try using brown sugar, a dot of margarine, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and several raisins in centers.

What you need:

1) One-half apple per child

2) 1 teaspoon of honey

3) 1 Tablespoon of orange juice

4) 1 teaspoon of sunflower seeds or nuts

Steps to GREAT Hand Washing:

your apples?

Germs can be found just about anywhere and everywhere. What are germs? Germs are tiny organisms (which can only be seen with a

microscope) that can make us sick if they find their way into our bodies.

Should we be scared of these tiny, invisible invaders that are practically everywhere? The answer to that question is, yes and no. Germs find a way into our bodies through our nose, mouth or eyes and are spread through the air when we sneeze, cough and breath. They can also

get passed from person to person through touch. If you high five

someone’s hand or touch the same

door knob as someone with germs or that is sick, you can get their germs in your body and become sick. While germs may sound scary, they can be destroyed through 20 seconds of good hand washing that will keep you from getting sick.

Hand washing is the easiest thing you can do to stay healthy and keep icky, sticky germs out of your body. Many people think hand washing is easy, and it is, if you know the right way to do it. Most of the time, people do not wash their hands well enough to kill all their germs. Therefore, please make sure you follow the steps below so you can stay healthy and happy this Fall.

1. How many types of germs are there?

2. How many seconds should you spend washing your hands?

3. Should you wash your hands after playing with pets?

1. There are 4 different types of germs; bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.

2. At least 20 seconds or the time it takes to sing the ABC’s once through, or the Happy Birthday Song twice through.

3. Yes.

Questions Answers are upside-down belowActivity 1: Take our germ quiz!

Know the best times to wash your hands

1) When your hands are visibly dirty2) Before eating or touching food3) After using the bathroom4) After blowing your nose or coughing5) After touching pets or other animals6) After playing outside7) After being with someone who is already sick

Know how to wash your hands

1) Use warm water instead of cold2) Don’t forget the soap. The more bubbles you make

with your soap, the more germs you will destroy.3) Work up a good lather with your soap all over

your hands, in between your fingers, around and under your fingernails, and as far up as your wrist. Do this for at least 20 seconds. To help you keep time, you can sing the ABC’s all the way through or the Happy Birthday song twice.

4) Rinse all your germ-filled soap off completely and dry your hands well with a clean towel or air dryer. Wet hands will attract more dirt and germs, so make sure to dry your hands well.
