Louie’s Milestone Story

A Story of Hope

“Yesterday was a huge day for Louie. Yesterday he graduat-

ed from feeding therapy and all services at Easter Seals

Central Illinois. It has been 4 years since he started feeding

therapy. He had just turned one and had his 3rd surgery.

He was eating stage 2 baby foods, thin baby cereals, and

smooth yogurt. He was drinking from a bottle. His first

goals were to pick up goldfish and put them in a bowl, and

we could do about 3 before a meltdown.

Two years later, he could pick up those goldfish, even

touch is face with them, but they would never be near his

mouth. Two years ago I believed we were going to blend

everything Louie ate for the rest of his life. I figured he

would survive on soups and yogurt.

Louie worked so hard. Solid food terrified him and yet

every week or every other week he would go and try to

touch it and try to lick it and interact with it in any safe way

he could. He wanted to be able to eat and he did not give

up so we did not give up on him.

His hard work and patience and persistence paid off!

Today, Louie will eat all of the same things the rest of us

eat. He will chew meat, vegetables, fruit, and grains of all

sorts. Yes, he still has to take small bites, yes he still has to

drink to help him swallow sometimes and the occasional

walk or jump helps too. Tonight we will probably go out to

eat (a process that used to be very uncomfortable) and will

eat and enjoy it. No one will look at us like we are idiots

for bringing a jar of baby food to a restaurant for a 2 year

old to eat. We won't have to ask for the chunks to be

strained out of his soup. He won't have to eat only mashed

potatoes with lots of gravy unless he wants to.

I cannot say enough about how proud we are of him. Spe-

cial thanks to all his therapists and friends who have helped

us along the way.” ~ Karen, Louie’s mom

At Easter Seals we believe that our

community is stronger when we build

on the abilities of all our neighbors.

That’s why today and everyday we

work as champions for ability.

Working in partnership with our chil-

dren, families and community, we offer

guidance, provide support and inspire

action so that everyone can reach for

TIMBER POINTE OUTDOOR CENTER MARINA PROJECTTIMBER POINTE OUTDOOR CENTER MARINA PROJECT

Timber Pointe Outdoor Center, located on Lake Bloomington, is the premier resource in the

state of Illinois for providing specialized outdoor recreational, experiential and family programs for

children and adults in a fun, safe and accessible environment.

The Marina area, a popular place for campers, is being transformed with the construction of a sea-

wall fronting a state of the art boardwalk and dock complex. The dock complex includes a sand

beach, shaded fishing areas, and specially designed canoe and kayak launch lifts and covered boat

lifts. These renovations will make marina-based activities accessible to all children and adults with

disabilities and other special needs.

The first phase of the Marina Project will be complete in time for the 2016 summer camp season.

The Timber Pointe Outdoor Center Marina Project is funded through the generosity of the Robert J. Woods and Joan

Jarrett Woods through the creation of The Woods Foundation in partnership with The Timber Pointe Charitable

Foundation and Easter Seals Central Illinois.

The dock complex is nearing completion.

Decking will be laid and the canopy installed Spring 2016.

Timber Pointe Outdoor Center offers programs throughout the year. Summer programming, in particular, gives way

to many opportunities for children and adults. Summer programs include Easter Seals residential and day programs,

Adventure Day Camp, contracted partner groups and rental groups. Integrated programming for typically-developing

siblings and peers is also offered.

Each session includes traditional camp activities such as swimming, fishing, hiking, canoeing, a pontoon boat ride,

arts & crafts, target sports, barnyard animals, high ropes, zip-line and horseback riding. The Timber Pointe staff

strives to create an experience that is inclusive, stimulating and educational while providing opportunities that might

otherwise seem impossible due to physical limitations, developmental delays or illnesses.
