Networking events for owner managers

DUE TO keen interest from owner managers based in County Kilkenny, the Kilkenny County Enterprise Board (KCEB) has assisted in the establishment of an Owner Manager Network which now meets every month.

This lunchtime network enables members to meet other business owners, discuss business topics and provides potential business opportunities. The meeting is on the last Wednesday of every month in Newpark Hotel, 12.30pm.

At the next meeting today, Wednesday, guest speaker will be Ann O’Brien, Managing Director, Kent Stainless Ltd, recent winners of the overall Irish Exporter of the Year Award 2012 and the Manufacturing Exporter of the Year Award 2012. Kent Stainless was founded in 1982 as a general steel fabricator. Ann will speak about how the company has overcome many challenges in recent years, and has experienced remarkable achievements and growth in markets abroad. The company has seen a dramatic increase in turnover in recent years, and this has in fact doubled over the last three years.

The network concept is to provide a forum for small business owner/managers to meet on a regular basis and learn about best practice for running a small business. In conjunction with Carlow County Enterprise Board and Carlow Local Authorities, the KCEB is co-hosting a Connect Networking Event with guest speaker

Bill Liao, an Australian entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist and author.

Young peopleBILL Liao co-founded the business social network service XING and educational programming in technology for young people, Coder Dojo and is a venture partner at SOS Ventures. Bill is dedicated to the vision that business and enterprise, both commercial and social, conducted fairly and with respect for the environment, can and will create a better working environment.

Bill will be present at the Connect Networking Event on March 7 2013 in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow.

“This KCEB network is open to all County Kilkenny based owner/managers who would like to engage in networking”, said Fiona Deegan, CEO of the KCEB.

“Being an entrepreneur one can feel isolated and lonely at times, being part of a network provides a support for owner/managers and an opportunity to share knowledge and hear the experiences of other network members and guest speakers’.

For further details about this group or if you would like to register to attend these events log on to www.kceb.ie or you can contact Enterprise Board office at 42 Parliament Street, Kilkenny, 056-7752662 or e-mail: [email protected]

MEALY’S Auctioneers are look-ing forward to their Thrift Inte-riors sale, a no-reserve spring clearance at which about 400 lots could sell for €5 each.

Less than 10% of the items may sell for around €1,000. Mealy’s specialise in fine art auctions which usually feature items of importance in terms of age, Provenance and rarity.

These items would normally achieve tens or even hundreds of thousands in Euros. One wonders why Mealy’s would host a sale with the thrifty and DIY in mind.

The answer has to do with obtaining fine and rare an-tiques. Mealy’s Fine Art built their name on clearing some of the finest properties in Ireland, whose large quantity of rooms were home to some of the fin-est antique furniture, paintings and decorative art.

Because these properties were so large and Mealy’s were required to clear all of the rooms, many antiques and similar items of lesser value were also accumulated. “These items were not sold in higher-profile sales, due to the large volume of higher-value antiques that were scheduled to be sold,” auctioneer George Mealy told The Reporter.“Our warehouse has reached capacity. Every item must be sold to make room for the an-tique furniture, paintings, and

other decorative art for sum-mer and autumn sales”.

The Thrift Interiors auction is on March 11, 5pm in Mealy’s Fine Art Auction Room, Kilken-ny Road, Castlecomer. All items may be inspected during public viewing on Sunday, 12 noon-5pm and Monday, 10am-5pm.

This viewing is in tandem with a Spring Fine and Decora-tive Art Sale on March 5. More information on Mealy’s Fine Art website at www.mealys.ie

WHEN IT comes to music four brilliant young local musicians are certainly on the ball.

For as well as playing a myriad of instruments, a quartet of eight year olds are also what we might term great little sports.

To say that they have many strings to their bows would be no exaggeration. Aptly called ‘The Little Rascals’ who play violin, viola, cello and many other other instruments, the boys, 2nd Class pupils who are set to make their First Communion, are also sports-mad.

They love hurling, soccer and rugby and are making great strides at athletics.

But it is at music that the string quartet is set to break new ground. The quartet is the first male entry for the Kilkenny Chamber Music Competition for primary schools, at the Kilkenny Music Festival, March 6-10.

The ‘experienced’ musicians from St Canice’s Co-Ed National School in Kilkenny City, have been playing music and sport together since they were four year old tots in junior infants.

Their tutor is Ruth O’Leary and the boys also play together at sessions supervised by

parents and they visit each other’s homes for rehearsals.

Parental supportTHE fab four are Sean Keenan, Abbey Lodge, The Waterbarracks, violin; Sean Cullen, The Weir, violin; Mikey Raggett, Glendine Road, viola and Harry Shine, The Weir, cello.

The boys enjoy the full support of their parents, some of whom are excellent musicians, their extended families and the superb staff at St Canice’s School.

The music festival has trophies to honour the contribution to Kilkenny of musical stalwarts Pat Shortis, Tom Dullard, Breda Phelan, Larry Daly, Kit O’Toole and Maureen O’Keeffe.

The annual festival will be held at St Canice’s Co-Ed School, Kilkenny College, CBS Secondary, James’s Street and Gaelscoil Osraí.

Sponsors include Kilkenny Borough Council, Meubles, State Street and St Canice’s Credit Union.

When it comes to the big event there is no doubt that our young guns from St Canice’s will aim for the top.

Success will be their goal as they point to a bright future in a classical field where they tend to hit the right note. Small boys with big ambition: From left, Sean Keenan, Sean Cullen, Mikey Raggett and Harry Shine Pic: Dylan Vaughan

CURVES of Kilkenny is collect-ing food for the Amber Wom-en’s Refuge based in Kilkenny, in partnership with the Curves Annual Food Drive

Throughout March, Curves of Kilkenny will be collecting non-perishable food for the 15th Annual Curves Food Drive! All collected food will be donated to the Amber Women’s Refuge.

Designed especially for wom-en, Curves is located on James Street, just off the High Street and they will waive their ser-vice fee for new members from 1st to 15th March in return for a bag of non-perishable food. The total amount collected will be donated to the Amber Women’s Refuge to highlight the needs of women and chil-dren in Kilkenny. Existing mem-bers will also be encouraged to donate non-perishable food to this worthwhile charity.

Enya, Manager of Curves of Kilkenny, said: “Collecting non-perishable food during the Annual Curves Food Drive is something which unites the Curves community globally and we’re delighted to cham-pion the Amber Women’s Ref-uge, whose goals of providing an environment which is safe, accepting and secure for wom-en and children who have ex-perienced domestic violence, which matches Curves’ core values extremely well.”

Curves of Kilkenny have been collecting and donating

to charity during the Annual Curves Food Drive for the past 8 years and has so far collected in excess of 10,000 kgs.

Enya says “The Food Drive is a vital part of our commu-nity program that fits perfectly with the Curves philosophy of promoting positive health and creating a community for “real women”. We look forward to many years of giving back to the community through de-serving charities such as the Amber Women’s Refuge. Why

not help us to continue sup-porting our Local Community by calling us for a free tour and Fitness Assessment!”

THE Riverside Restaurant at the Kilkenny River Court Hotel has yet again been awarded an AA Rosette for its Culinary Ex-cellence.

The AA Rosettes are awarded annually to hotels producing fine cuisine, with the aim of the Rosette scheme to provide AA Members and readers of the AA guidebook along with the general public reliable informa-tion about where to eat. They are awarded on a rising scale and have been handed out for over 50 years.

The AA inspectors were high-ly impressed by their dining ex-perience at the Riverside Res-taurant. Rosettes are awarded for the quality of a restaurant’s cooking. All Rosette-awarded restaurants demonstrate a use of fresh, quality ingredients

with well-balanced flavours and a menu reflecting an obvi-ous enthusiasm and commit-ment to promoting good food. The Rosette award is not a classification: it is solely made on the basis of a meal visit by one or more of our hotel and restaurant inspectors, who have an unrivalled breadth and depth of experience in assess-ing quality.

Commenting on the award win General Manager of Kilkenny River Court Hotel Declan Moriarty said, “We are delighted to have retained the prestigious AA Rosette yet again, all of the kitchen team here led by Executive Chef Ge-rard Dunne of nearby Thomas-town, work tremendously hard to achieve a high standard of menu day in and day out so it is

fantastic to have this hard work publically rewarded.”

By popular demand, The Riverside Restaurant will re-launch its Sunday Lunch Menu from this Sunday 3rd March to co-inside with the Wedding Afternoon at the Hotel the very same day. After last week’s ap-pearance on RTE’s Don’t Tell the Bride the Hotel is expected to be very busy so bookings are advisable to avoid disap-pointment. Sunday Lunch runs from 12:30pm – 3:00pm and at a very reasonable cost of just €23.95pp for three courses or €19.95pp for two courses. Kids aged 4-12 are just €8.50 per child.
