Presentation of a New Set of Adult Jerseys Joe Howard on behalf of Howard Farms, in the company of his sons, Donnacha and Tomás, presented a new set of jerseys to Killavullen GAA club at a function, after training on last Friday night, the 21st June. The New jerseys, in the traditional blue and white of Killavullen, were presented to the captains of the junior teams in Killavullen, Patrick Angland, captain of the football team, and Liam Cronin, captain of the junior hurling team. In a pleasant surprise for the Howard family, Joe was presented with framed replica jerseys, in the home and away kit of Killavullen, by Eamonn Coakley, manager of the junior A football team, and Barry Murphy, manager of the hurling team. The Howard family, successful local feed and agricultural -supplies merchants have been very generously sponsoring Killavullen GAA club since 2010, for which the club is very grateful.

Joe, in humidity stressed that the family are very proud to be associated with Killavullen GAA club, and wished the club the very best for the future. Joe would be intimately aware of the success of the club at the moment as he is the current club chairman. Joe emphasised the fantastic work that is being done by countless volunteers within the club, driving that success.

Killavullen – Spread Out – Overseas - Ian O Driscoll , Basel Hello to all from Switzerland. We moved to Basel in Jan 2016 which is the 3rd largest city in the country and is a Pharmaceutical industry hub. Switzerland has a high quality of life, is very safe, clean and organized and all of us are really enjoying the experience. The girls enjoy the usual things... gymnastics, swimming, soccer, music and also have the added bonus of having skiing on their doorstep. There is a big focus on the outdoors and we enjoy day trips to explore new places in Switzerland, Germany and France. The climate is really nice, with warm and sunny summers and not too cold winters. One major difference is the little wind and rain experienced here - that’s a huge positive. Open air swimming pools are also very popular with the kids during the summer. We are easily able to keep connected with Ireland and I am keeping up with all that is happening in the GAA club. I’m looking forward to see all the up and coming talent come together to bring further success to the club.... remember, it doesn’t come without sacrifice and hard work! I was sorry to miss the 1998 Team reunion last Christmas but a family Christening had to take priority. Best wishes to all, Ian, Siobhan, Erica, Slaney and Olivia

Feile Round – Up 1. Killavullen Participation & playing host - by John Hannon The sun set on Féile on Sunday night, the 9th of June but it will leave an afterglow that will light fond memories for many years to come. The clash of the ash still echoes around the village after a packed programme of matches over three days that showcased the best of hurling talent at under 14 level from the four corners of Ireland. The two pitches looked magnificent and reflected a massive club effort to prepare for Féile. Excitement had steadily risen over recent weeks and reached giddy proportions as our visiting team from Boolavogue Monageer, County Wexford, arrived by bus on Friday afternoon. They were greeted by all the host families who had generously volunteered to offer accommodation to the twenty-two players and six mentors who had made the long journey from the sunny south-east. Soon it was down to business, however, as the programme of matches got underway. Killavullen played two games on Friday night, losing to Hospital Herbertstown, Limerick, before gaining the upper hand over near neighbours Carrignavar. All four teams were catered for afterwards in the community hall in a wonderful display of hospitality and community spirit. On Saturday morning we had a great game against our new friends Monageer Boolavogue, and with little to divide the teams, the visitors prevailed. The sequence of results sent Killavullen to Ballyhooley and the quarter-final of the shield competition, where we met Thurles. This was a cracking game, with Killavullen, despite injuries to key players, leading by two points with time almost up. We conceded a late, late goal that shattered our Féile dreams. To compound our disappointment, Monageer Boolavogue went out at the same stage of the cup competition. But that disappointment gradually eased with another very enjoyable evening in the community hall. A big effort was made to show the Cork Waterford game on a large screen and the rebel victory was loudly cheered by the joint Cork and Wexford fan club. The hurling post mortems were put on hold while mixed teams locked horns over a fun quiz in which practically every young participant went home with a sporting prize. In the true spirit of cooperation, the coaches settled on an exchange of skills and strategies that continued into the small hours at various locations around the village. With friendships forged and invitations extended for a trip east, a guard of honour waved good bye on Sunday morning to the Wexford visitors. All the locals spoke highly of them, sharing stories of their good humour, kindness and appreciation of the local hospitality. Immediately we had to turn our attention to the busy schedule of matches on both fields, as eight teams did battle, from as far away as Connemara, Meath, Armagh, Roscommon, Westmeath and South Kerry and two teams from Cork. Buses and cars brought players and supporters, bringing a great variety of colour and accents. Tears and cheers in equal measure as the harsh lessons of sport left some regrets but unforgettable memories for all involved in such a fantastic competition. It was especially memorable for our wonderful players who did themselves, their families and their club proud. The club is incredibly proud also of the massive volunteer effort made to prepare and execute the full Féile programme to the highest standard. So many helped fill so many roles, from parking and stewarding to officiating at matches, organising teams at the hall and dressing rooms and catering for many hundreds of players and supporters, and of course hosting players. A huge thank you to all the volunteers. The success of the weekend depended on so many, but would not have been possible

without the super-human effort of club officers Rosemaria Taylor and Tommy Cremin, Caroline Hogan and co-ordinator extraordinaire John Beechinor. John’s late father, Johnny, had masterminded the last local Féile celebration in 1985, so it was entirely fitting that John took up the mantle, and no-one could have done it better. All told it was a fantastic weekend. Best wishes to Monageer Boolavogue and warm thanks for the presentation made by them to our club. Beir bua an dá chlub. Killavullen Players on Representatives Juvenile Panels 1. Celtic Challenge – U17 Brian Cotter and Darragh O Grady from the Killavullen club were an integral part of the Cork North team that reached the final of the Celtic challenge, the Corn Michael Hogan, which was played on Saturday, the 29th June 2019. Though ultimately, coming up short on the day, against a very talented Galway Maroon selection, we in Killavullen are very proud of our local involvement with the team. The Cork North Team was drawn in a group with Clare Saffrons, Kerry, Limerick Sarsfields and Cork Mid-West. The opening game in the campaign was against Cork Mid-West, played in Donoughmore where we (North Cork) were victorious on a score line of 1-17 to 1-14 The second game in the group saw the visit of Clare Saffrons to Ballyhea, in another great game it was our ability to score goals which was the difference on the night winning 5-12 to 1-12. Next up we made the trip to Tralee to play the only Kerry team entered in the competition. A great game saw both teams share the points on a score line of 3-20 to 2-23 The final game in the group saw us face Limerick Sarsfields, knowing a win would put us into the Division 1 of the All-Ireland series, the players again showed their threat in front of goals winning on a score line of 4-15 to 12 points. This win qualified us for an All-Ireland quarter final where we would face a very strong Tipperary Gold team. This was a cracking game of hurling played in Golden Co. Tipperary. The teams couldn't be separated in normal time and two periods of extra time were called, at the end of this our lads just came out on top on a score line of 5-15 to 1-25. This set up an all Cork All Ireland semi-final between ourselves and Cork East played in Ballinlough, again it was our ability to find the net and keep them out at the other end which was the difference between the two teams on the day and we won on a score line of 3-13 to 1-17. Reaching the Division 1 final was a fantastic achievement for these local players and management and the support of the parish of Killavullen was greatly appreciated by the players. The club took the entire Killavullen minor team to Tullamore by bus, along with 4 mentors of the team, to support Darragh and Brian. A novelty pit stop was arranged on the way, with a game of “Foot Golf” in Cashel, Co. Tipperary. It does not really matter what sport is played, as ace free taker on the team, Mikey O Connor won out this novelty tournament as well, with a fine score of 63 kicks to get around the 18 holes. However, in the Celtic challenge game itself, sport is cruel, and despite being ahead at half time, the Galway selection overpowered the North cork selection in the end, on a final score of Galway Maroons 4-24 as against 2-12 for North Cork. Both Darragh and Brian can be immensely proud of the contribution in the final, and in the path to the final.

Cúl Camp 2019 – Record Numbers A record number of 185 children took part this year in the Cúl camp that took place in excellent weather between the 1st of 5th of July in Killavullen GAA Field. The camp, organised by Maire O Connor was superbly led and to cater and keep interested that number of kids is really spectacular, and a testament to Maire’s organisation skill, and that of the crew that she has assembled around her. We thought that last year’s figure of 167 kids could not be beaten, but we fairly blew that number out of the water. Maire was modest in accepting any accolades but instead deflected the attention to others, like Liam Vaughan, Rose Maria Taylor and an army of Killavullen U16 and minor boys and girls were are the real stars of the show, as coaches and helpers. It is these people who orchestrate all of the drills and see that they are executed properly, yet maintaining a fun atmosphere. A special thanks to all our children who were great and we hope you enjoyed your week in camp, also a big thanks to all the moms and dads that helped us out over the week. Also a special thanks to our Cork player Niall O Leary who called to us on Thursday, spoke with all our groups and signed jerseys and helmets. Congratulations and well done to Ava Hanrahan and Charlie Cremin on winning the skills competition.
