The Orthodox Church is the second largest
Christian church in the world, with an estimat-ed 225–300 million ad-herents. Arguably, one of its smallest parishes is centred at St. Aidan’s Orthodox Church in Cranbrook, which draws its congregation from communities around the East Koote-nay. St. Aidan’s is also one of the newest Or-thodox churches, ex-tant since 2008, when it took over the former Ukrainian Catholic church on 7th Avenue.
This week, St. Aidan’s and the local Orthodox parish re-ceived a special and important visitor. Irénée Rochon, Bishop of Ottawa and the Arch-
diocese of Canada — visited Cranbrook while on his first official tour as the head of the Orthodox Church in Canada. Bishop Ro-chon came down to the offices of the Towns-man for an interview upon arriving in Cran-brook.
“I try to visit every region of Canada at least once a year,” he said. “Smaller parishes are harder to get to, for financial reasons. But we try to combine them with bigger [par-ishes] — I have to go to Winnipeg anyways, and I have to go to Ed-monton, so there’s time in between to visit smaller parishes, get to know the people, get to serve there. And there’s no wasted time.”

actually been serving in the position for a few years, due to his prede-cessor’s — Archbishop Seraphim — trial for molestation charges, the conviction of which is currently under ap-peal.
On October 2, 2014, Bishop Rochon was ca-nonically elected by the Holy Synod on Oc-tober 21, 2014.
“I’ve been doing this for five years already,” he said. “A few years as administrator, but a year before I was offi-cially elected I started visiting the parishes.
“I love getting to know people, getting to know what they need, trying to help them and give them what they need. Their priests are there, but the priests need to be given the means to help the peo-ple. That’s my job.
“I just wish I was younger — if I was 40 I’d have more energy. I’m going to be 66 in a few days.”
The Orthodox Church, like every church, is facing its challenges — especial-ly the pressures of “sec-
ularism and the de-christianizing of soci-ety,” as Bishop Rochon says. Leading by exam-ple is the best way to
meet these challenges. “The message of the
Church is the gospel, the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said. “We have the duty to be wit-nesses to that — not necessarily to stand on the corners and scream, but by our way of life, our behaviour, the way we help others in need, to show the true mes-sage of the gospels.”
The Orthodox Church traces its histo-ry to the church estab-lished by St. Paul and the Apostles, through the Roman and Byzan-tine Empires, and re-gards itself as the origi-nal Church founded by Christ and His apos-tles. Some 2,000 years ago, the Christian church split into its eastern and western halves — the Roman Catholic and Orthodox — an event known as the great schism. In re-cent decades, there has been attempts at a rec-onciliation — Bishop Rochon describes it as “talk.”
“But it doesn’t lead anywhere,” he said. “Because they are not willing to come back to the faith of the 1st Cen-tury. They are set in their doctrines, which were the cause of the separation in the first place.
“There were five pa-triarchates, and Rome went on its own. And the four others contin-ued. And then later, within the Western Church there were other divisions (the Reformation).
What sets the Ortho-dox Church apart, and keeps it vital?
“The message of the Orthodox Church is the message of the Gospel, which was handed to us through the apostles from our Lord Jesus Christ,” Bishop Rochon said. “And the Church of the East — the East-ern Orthodox Church — the old Church of Jerusalem, Antioch, Al-exandria, Constantino-ple — have preserved this message for 2,000 years now. And the im-portant thing for us is never to deviate.
“St. Vincent of Lérins says that the universal faith is what has been believed and taught always, since forever.”

thodox Church mem-bers — Father Andrew Applegate from Cres-ton, who presides at St. Aidan; Deacon Kevin Wigglesworth from Sparwood; and Arch-priest Phillip Eriksson from Calgary.
The Orthodox Church is heavily cen-tred in Russia and East-ern Europe, but has proved a draw to many not necessarily of that geographic back-ground. Eriksson, Ap-plegate and Wig-glesworth spoke to that phenomenon.
Father Applegate mentioned the current Convergence move-ment, whereby some Protestant churchgoers are finding inspiration in the writings and his-tory of the early church. “It tends to be very se-rious Christians that start reading church history and discover-ing for themselves that the (Orthodox) church still exists. It’s quite a shock to them some-times.
“I’d say over half of our church would probably come from people like these, who’ve really been searching for the early church.”
“I actually grew up in Sparwood in the United Church,” Dea-con Wigglesworth said. “So I’m not too far away from home. But 10 years ago I was in-troduced to the Ortho-dox Church and basi-cally, gradually fell in love with it. It’s a much richer, much deeper theology and history than what the United Church in Canada had to offer.”
Father Eriksson said that in Calgary, the congregation is about to move into a new church in the spring. “We’ve had one to five new families come and check us out each Sun-day. We haven’t had room in our small church. So there’s a huge interest out there.”
While in Cranbrook, Bishop Rochon and the others were to attend a service and divine lit-erary at St. Aidan. One member of the congre-gation was to be made a sub-deacon, another long-serving member was to be given a gramota (official letter of recognition).

Dalke helps competitor on hybrid hunt

It’s getting down to the wire for Nikita Dalke and the rest of the Extreme Huntress competitors.
Dalke, along with five other female hunt-ers, are vying for the title of Extreme Huntress in a competition that was filmed in Texas over the summer, but the episodes are cur-rently airing online.
In the latest episode, the 10th out of 13, Dalke has been paired up with Margaret Botha, a South African hunter who has yet to get an animal on the show.
Botha and Dalke went out twice, once for
a Sika deer-elk hybrid and again for a red sheep.
“I though the hunts were good. It was a little frustrating for her at the end, but that’s hunting,” Dalke said.
In the elk hunt, Dalke, who has extensive elk hunting experience in the East Kootenay region, served as more of a judge than a hunting partner, per the request of the show judges.
“When we started the hunt, I had asked the judge, ‘what role am I playing here. Am I acting like a guide? I’m confused as what my role is here’,” said Dalke.
“She goes, ‘We want you to basically act like a judge. We want you to tell her the layout of the area we’re in, where you think they are, just any information on elk and just let her do her own thing, let her hunt.

Board of VarianceThe Board of Variance is an independent body formed pursuant to the provisions of Section 899 of the Local Government Act. The Board considers requests for minor variances to the City of Cranbrook’s Zoning Bylaw regarding the siting, size and dimensions of buildings. The Board considers whether compliance with zoning regulations would create undue hardship resulting from aspects of the site as opposed to those which are personal to, or generated by, the property owner. Two positions are available.
Cranbrook in MotionThe Cranbrook in Motion Committee was formed to examine transportation planning and policy issues facing the City. There is a signi� cant relationship between transportation, land use, social needs, traf� c safety, parking and the environment. The Committee will examine these connections, in the context of both short term and long term planning, and provide recommendations to City Council for all modes of local mobility. Cranbrook Public Library BoardMembers of the Library Board form a corporation with the powers and duties given under the Library Act. Board Applicant Process and Package available at the library or at www.cranbrook.ca. Three positions are available.
Family and Community ServicesThe Family and Community Services Committee provides advice to Council on issues of importance to senior, youth, homeless people and physically challenged. Gerry Rinaldi was the second Alpine Skier from Kimberley B.C. to make it on the Canadian National Ski Team — just two sea-sons after Kimberley teammate and later to be Coach Gary Bad-distella. Rinaldi learned his Downhill
Racing on the “Dread-naught”, a run which sadly no longer exists in its entirety up at Kimberley Resort.
The “Dreadnaught (and there were many reasons to dread it , be-lieve you me, 1 minute and 40 seconds of sur-prises) run itself began at a notch in the trees to the right of the Rosa, when you got off the Tee Bar ( which was
reputed to be the lon-gest Tee in North Amer-ica 24 minutes to the top).
Gerry Rinaldi was on the Canadian National Ski Team when Nancy Greene was attaining
World status, The Ca-nuck Men were quite formidable themselves, Peter Duncan, Bobby Swan, Wayne and Scott Henderson, Rod He-bron ( we both dated the same girl back in the
day,Ski Instuctor Alli-son Goodfellow from Montreal). Gerry, or “Rinaldo” as he was known on the Canadian team, made the skiing world sit up and take notice when he scored

an incredible 10th- place finish on the famed Hahnenkamm Downhill Course in Kitzbuhel Austria,, only half a second behind Karl Schranz, Jean Claude Killy, and Guy Perrilat.
The Hahnenkamm is the toughest downhill in the World, speeds of 70 MPH and up and 100,000 fans screaming in your ear, no Canadi-an had ever placed as high as Kimberley’s Gerry Rinaldi. The date was January 18th, 1969, and Gerry was all of 23 years old.
In summers Gerry came back to town to work for his dad Bruno Rinaldi, who owned a plumbing and heating business here in Kim-berley. “ Rinaldo “ played baseball for the B.P.O.E. Angels,, under Coach Mauk.
Gerry Rinaldi com-peted in the 1968 Win-ter Olympics in Greno-ble France, where Jean Claude Killy won three Gold Medals in skiing. At the ripe old age of 22, Gerry finished a decent 31st in the Downhill, where Gary Battistella was his Canadian Olympic Coach ( also from Kimberley B.C.).
As it turned out, Ri-naldi was not quite done with the Hahnen-kamm Downhill in Kitzbuhel. Austria. At the 65th running of it, the Austrian Ski Federa-tion invited Gerry Ri-naldi to be their Tech-nical Delegate ( Direc-tor) of the Hahnen-kamm. In Austria this race is as sacred as our Stanley Cup Hockey Fi-nals.. This was a huge honour for Mr. Rinaldi, and Canada as a skiing nation.
The last time I saw Gerry Rinaldi, he was up at Trickle Creek playing golf (would you believe a 68). Rinaldo was not a flashy skier, but he was a darn good racer who certainly did his part to put Kimber-ley B.C. on the ski map. “Rinaldo” is now a member of Canada Ski-ing Hall of Fame.

to an elk in distress off Highway 95A east of Kimberley around 11:00 am.,” Newel said. “Sgt Darrell Robinson immediately attended and found a cow elk laying on her back with two legs caught in the wire. He was able to ap-proach the animal and free one leg, using wire cutters he was able to free the second leg. Shortly after the elk stood up and walked away, with no apparent injuries.”
“We believe the elk was held captive for a least an hour before their arrival. The elk could have suffered a painful death or be at-tacked by predators,” he said. “The public often call us when there is cri-sis or immediate assis-tance is required, in this case we were able to respond quickly, free the animal and allow her to get back to na-ture, unharmed.”

Kimberley kids have an opportunity to skate with their favourite Dy-
namiter players this Sunday, December 14 at the Civic Centre.
The Dynamiters will be on the ice from 2:15 to 3:30 Sunday after-noon and Santa will be

Gr. 1/2 class led by Mrs. Neeve had a wonderful time today on their Trekking Tuesday outing. They were accompanied by a group of high school students from Kimberley Alternate school and hiked to the Lois Creek Trails where they enjoyed several outdoor activities. It was topped off with roasted hot dogs, marshmallows and hot chocolate. Thank you to Mr. Clark for allowing the students to join your group and have a wonderful experience.

ing African game, had never hunted those long-legged ungulates.
“That was the first time she’d ever seen elk,” Dalke said.
The two were able to spot some elk, but Botha wasn’t able to spot the specific hybrid she needed to take down.
The next day, the two went out again, as Dalke was set for a red sheep hunt, but she gave it up to Botha. Over the course of the show, Dalke has already bagged two ani-mals, so she gave up her hunt for her fellow competitor.
“That was supposed to be my hunt but when we came up on the sheep, I told her to go,” Dalke said. “That was just more her hunting. I didn’t have to help her or anything like that, I was just the secondary shooter in past hunts.”
The next episode will wrap up the last hunt with all six competitors be-fore moving in to the final challenges, which will include the second part to a dangerous game challenge, a long-range shoot and a biathlon.

Have you heard them whining about the so called “War on Christmas”? It comes across my radar mostly
through chain emails or the commentators (mostly on Fox News) who complain that Christians are being persecuted because other people are wishing them “Happy Hol-idays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” These conservative political and religious com-mentators complain that this is harassment and persecution.
Persecution? Really? Do they even know what that word means? I doubt it. If they did, they wouldn’t throw it around so loosely. If you want to learn about what it feels like to be persecuted, talk to Malala, or to Christians in Muslim countries, or to women in those lands. They can tell you something about what it feels like to be persecuted.
For rich white men (and they are mostly men) to complain that they are being per-secuted is Orwellian doublespeak of the worst kind. Wikipedia defines double-speak as “language that deliberately dis-guises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words.” Like calling torture “enhanced in-terrogation.” Or layoffs “downsizing.” Or the killing of civilians by bombs “collateral damage.” That’s doublespeak. These com-mentators are consciously misusing lan-guage in an attempt to impose their beliefs on others with the intention of going back to a pure, white past.
These are also the ones who complain ad nauseam about placing nativity scenes in public places. If anyone should dare to disagree with this tedious whine, they are immediately labelled a ‘godless atheist’. After all, they say, America and Canada are ‘Christian countries’, and we should be proud to display our Christian heritage
publicly.The trouble with this is that it’s a lie.
Neither Canada not the USA were founded on Christian principles. Furthermore, we now live in a multi–cultural and multi–faith era, and we must find ways of living together peacefully with people of other cultures, other faiths and those of no faith at all. By no stretch of the imagination are we a Christian nation.
As far as I’m concerned, these tedious complaints are nothing more than the whining of a group of mis-ogynists and xenophobes who long for “the good old days when we were in charge.”
Persecution? It just ain’t so!It’s time for Christians to reclaim Christ-
mas by declaring war on the whole “War on Christmas” whine. I obviously don’t endorse any official ban on Christmas. But I get tired of the shrillness of some of these people. They claim to speak the truth. In reality, they simply exhibit signs of a false sense of being victimized.
So let me ask: Why does Jesus Christ need to be proclaimed on department store facades and in other public places? Do we really need to depend on commer-cial and government enterprises to do our work of proclaiming the faith we hold? Is it really up to Target and Walmart to pro-claim the holiness of Christmas? Is it really the government’s role to protect a particu-lar religion?
In fact, as a Christian, I’m offended by the notion that stores and greeting card companies and government agencies should be charged with this responsibility. Truthfully, it’s not up to them. It’s up to us. And not just at Christmas time. It’s up to us, throughout the year, to make sure our
lives proclaim what we hold to be true.I’m not offended if someone wishes me
happy holidays. They could do worse. And I, in turn, will wish them a Merry Christ-mas … or Happy Hanukkah … or Happy Kwanzaa … or even (gasp) Happy Holi-days.
This so–called War on Christmas (a convenient, if untruthful, slogan for these poor victims) reminds me that in fact, there used to be a War against Christmas — it was waged by Calvinists and Puritans — who are the spiritual forebears of today’s Christian Right. They thought that Chris-tians had the right and the duty to legislate public life.
In Geneva, Calvinists banned Christ-mas in the early 16th century. When Cal-vinism spread to Scotland in the mid 16th century, Amy McNeese reminds us in an article in the Church of Scotland maga-zine, Life & Work, the result was that Christmas was banned in 1583. “There was nothing half–hearted about this gesture. Reinforced by the hard arm of the law, this was a ban that had bite. Over the centuries that followed, many a casual offender was called to account for Christmas transgres-sions, and no seasonal leniency was shown.” The ban remained in force for al-most 400 years, and was only officially lift-ed in the 1950s.
God save us from such self–righteous people. Those who claim to speak for God often have done more damage when they assume public power, and especially again those who disagree with them.
So I say to you all Merry Christmas … or Happy Holidays … or Happy Kwanzaa … or Happy Hanukkah … and a peaceful, yes truly peaceful, New Year.

The Cranbrook Community Theatre Society celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, or, to be more accurate, neglected to celebrate its 50th anniversa-ry this year. An amateur theatre group staying in business for 50 years is quite an achievement.
The Community Theatre did celebrate its 40th anniver-sary this year as stewards, on behalf of the city, of the former Masonic Temple, now “The Studio”. An amateur theatre group in the same place for 40 years is nothing short of mirac-ulous.
A few years ago the group celebrated the 100th anniver-sary of the construction of the grand old building. Perhaps there were just too many anni-versaries on top of each other to worry about the latest one. And besides, they were busy doing things, like producing plays, which, as we know, they have done for 50 straight years.
That is not to say that com-munity theatre in Cranbrook began only 50 years ago. In fact, this year marks the 111th anniversary of amateur theatre in Cranbrook.
The first live theatre perfor-mance in Cranbrook took place in April, 1898, but that was a professional touring company — or at least some-thing along those lines — and therefore doesn’t count.

mances, essentially talent shows, there appears to have been nothing in the way of the-atrical undertakings until the spring of 1903, and for that we might thank the town of Pinch-er Creek. In May, 1902, the res-idents of that little community — about 400 people at the time — decided to mount a produc-tion of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” and, with a cast of 40, take it on the road — or rather, rails — to Cran-brook, Fernie and Nelson. Pre-sales looked good but severe flooding in the Crows Nest Pass halted all traffic and forced the cancellation of the tour.
It might well be argued that, therefore, the following spring, when a local production of “Pi-rates of Penzance” appeared for four consecutive nights, Cranbrook was merely borrow-ing a page from a Pincher Creek script. Nonetheless, it was the first actual, amateur, theatrical production in Cran-brook’s history and, if the re-views are to be believed (and they often are, of course) it wasn’t half bad.
In honour of the show, the stage of the Wentworth Opera House was enlarged by 15 feet and the seating raised to allow for better sightlines, thereby improving the theatre experi-ence for years to come.
Featuring a cast and chorus of mostly local players, the play was directed and produced by Mr. William Mackenzie, who may have been brought in for that express purpose. Both he and his wife starred in the op-eretta and then likely moved on, for they do not seem to ap-pear again in the Cranbrook theatre scene.

Soon, Josh Morrissey will be a member of the Kelowna Rockets.
On Wednesday, the Rockets announced a major trade, as they ac-quired Morrissey, a 19-year-old, as part of a four-player swap with the Prince Albert Raid-ers that also included two draft picks. Oh, and by the way, the Rockets also kicked off their an-nual pre-Christmas road trip with a win, as Kelowna staved off the host Lethbridge Hurri-canes, 4-3 in a shootout.
“We are getting argu-ably the best defence-man in the WHL in Josh Morrissey,” said Hamil-ton, the Rockets’ presi-dent and GM. “He’s been playing very well for Prince Albert and he made a strong point in Winnipeg’s training camp this year. I think we’ve done something very good for our hock-ey club. We’ve lost a couple of really good players in the deal, but I just thought we needed to add something to our young defence.”

right-winger Austin Glover, 18, and 5-foot-11 defenceman Jesse Lees, 19, along with bantam draft picks in 2016 and 2017.
Morrissey is a 1st-round NHL draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets (13th overall in 2013) and a member of the Team Canada world junior se-lection camp. He played in every game for St. Johns in the AHL play-offs at the end of the last season and nearly made
the Jets’ roster this sea-son.
Morrissey, who played last night in the Raiders’ 3-0 road loss at Vancouver, will be one of two defencemen at the national junior team selection camp who played in last year’s tournament. The other is Chris Bigras of OHL Owen Sound.
When Morrissey re-turns to the WHL, he’ll make Kelowna’s blue-line that much better — especially if he’s paired with Madison Bowey on the power play. Bowey will also be one of the 10 defencemen at the na-tional junior team selec-
tion camp in Toronto trying to crack the roster.
Morrissey was the second-highest scoring defenceman in the WHL last season when he had 28 goals, 45 assists for 73 points in 59 games. This season, he has 7 goals and 14 assists in 26 games. He’s also the older brother of Rockets backup goalie Jake Mor-rissey.
“It’s never easy to trade a player like Josh,” Raiders GM Bruno Campese said in a press release. “He has been an important part of our or-ganization for the past four years, not only has he been a great team leader and contributor to our community, but is one of the top defence-men in our franchise his-tory. We would like to thank Josh and Gage for their commitment to the Raider organization and wish them all the best.”
Quinney, 19, has six goals and nine assists in 31 games played.
“We don’t make a lot of trades and when this came up we knew we would have to give up good players,” Hamilton said. “We gave up two high quality players and people in Jesse and Aus-tin. I think they are going to a team that will be very competitive and they are counting on them to go in and help bolster the line-up.”

The Kootenay Ice roll on without the services of captain Sam Reinhart, facing the Prince Albert Raiders Friday night at Western Financial Place.
Reinhart departed Thursday for Toronto and Team Canada Se-lection Camp ahead of the 2015 IIHF World Ju-nior Championship.
“We’ll see the charac-ter of the hockey team,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Thursday afternoon. “It’s an opportunity for guys to be put into situations that they haven’t been in for a month. Hopefully they’re more ready now than they were a month ago. We need the points. We’re going to play eight games without [Rein-hart] and we’re going to battle and we’re in a race. That’s the bottom line.
“We need guys to step up.”
A little more than a month ago, the Koote-nay Ice suffered a 5-0 defeat on home ice to the Prince Albert Raid-ers Oct. 28. The loss was the sixth in a row for the Ice, who went on to drop seven consecutive contests.
A little more than a week later, and Sam Re-inhart was returned to the Ice from the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, helping spark the revival of the club. The Ice were the hottest team in the WHL through the month of November, rolling to a record of 10-2-0-0, helped along by the steadying presence of the unflappable Rein-hart.
“You can’t just re-
place a guy like him, with his skill set,” said Ice al-ternate captain Jaedon Descheneau Thursday afternoon. “But other guys can step up to cre-ate a full group.”
Reinhart, a native of North Vancouver, rat-tled off 27 points in 15 games since his return, only being held off the scoresheet Tuesday night in a 4-1 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers.
“We’re looking for guys other than Bozon, Philp and Descheneau to step up and produce points, produce oppor-tunities and wear the other team down so we can create opportuni-ties for that top group,” McGill added.
Descheneau caught fire in the month of No-vember, blasting off eight goals and 20 points in 12 games to earn Kootenay Ice Player of the Month honours.
“I didn’t even know they shut us out, I couldn’t remember back that far,” Desche-neau said with a laugh. “It’s just another game, new day. We’ve got to practice today and get ready for [Friday]. I
guess now that you’ve said that, let’s score a goal on these guys.”
In the only other meeting between the two clubs this season, the Raiders edged the Ice 3-2 Oct. 21 in Prince Albert. Rookie forward River Beattie and veter-an Levi Cable tallied for the Ice.
With 40 games re-maining on the sched-ule and identical re-cords of 15-17-0-0, the Raiders and Ice sit tied and one point back of the Moose Jaw Warriors for the second wild card spot in the WHL’s East-ern Conference.
“You’ve got to beat them to get to where you want to be,” Descheneau said. “It’s a big game. We need the two points.”
Ice goaltender Wyatt Hoflin has started 20 consecutive games heading into Friday night. Hoflin leads the WHL in minutes played (1,684). With 831 saves, Hoflin also sits second behind Swift Current Broncos goaltender Landon Bow (846) for the league lead in saves.
“Absolutely, I do [worry about Hoflin wearing down], but in saying that, he has the personality to not go through peaks and val-leys in his game mental-ly,” McGill said. “Yes, we do worry about him wearing down, but his mental makeup is so much different from the guy that was here last year that I think he can handle this. He’s just so much more on an even keel than the other guy.”
McGill is, of course, referring to his 2013-14 workhorse, Mackenzie Skapski, who is now with the Hartford Wolf-pack of the American
Hockey League. The New York Rang-
ers prospect suited up in 53 games for the Ice last season, but didn’t see a consecutive string any longer than 13 games.
Coming off a 3-0 loss to the Vancouver Giants, the Prince Albert Raiders arrive in Cranbrook without the services of star defenceman Josh Morrissey, who was dealt to the Kelowna Rockets late Wednesday night. Had he not been dealt, Morrisey likely wouldn’t have dressed against the Ice anyways, as he’s off to Toronto with Reinhart for Team Canada Selection Camp.
“He’s arguably one of the best defencemen in the league,” Descheneau said. “Obviously it’s nice when you don’t have to play against him. To not have to worry about a guy like him when you play is nice. But at the same time, they have other skilled players there and they play hard. You can’t just key on one guy or they’ll expose you. We have to play a team game.”
Friday marks the sixth game on a sev-en-game road trip for the Raiders. Prince Al-bert is 2-3-0-0 thus far, having dropped con-tests in Kelowna and Victoria in addition to Wednesday’s loss in Vancouver. The Raiders two victories came over the Prince George Cou-gars (5-2, Dec. 3) and Kamloops Blazers (5-4, Dec. 5) on the first two games of the trip.

The Kimberley Dyna-miters are on the verge of acquiring forward Lin-coln Lane (1996) from the Grand Forks Border Bruins in exchange for future considerations.
According to Dyna-miters general manager Dave Smith, the deal has been agreed upon in principle, but must first pass through Hock-ey Canada before it can be made official.
Prior to the trade, Lane led the Border Bru-ins in scoring with seven goals and 22 assists in 29
games. Lane’s 29 points represent a career high.
“I like to have a line that plays hard, is physi-cal and tough to play against -- we have the makings of that,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks Thursday afternoon. “The rest, I like to call them your top nine. These are players you use offensively and you use them on the power play. That’s where I see Lincoln fitting in right away.”
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing in at 200 pounds, Lane will bring some welcome size to a Dynamiters lineup that
is peppered with speed and skill.
Leading scorer and captain Jason Richter (24-15-39) measures up at 5-foot-8. The pesky Eric Buckley (8-15-23) stands 5-foot-9. New-comer Braden Saretsky (5-12-17) and alternate captain Jared Marchi (10-12-22) are both 5-foot-11 and weigh less than 190 pounds.

The Kimberley Dy-namiters look to make up ground in the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Divi-sion this weekend, but with five key players missing due to injury, that won’t be an easy task.
Veteran forward Marco Campanella is expected to miss six to eight weeks after suffer-ing a lower-body injury. Forward Sawyer Hunt continues to battle an upper-body injury and rookie forward Jordan Roy is still healing up after breaking his collar bone earlier this season.
Defenceman Tristan Pagura has only played two games with the Ni-tros this season and is out indefinitely. In re-cent weeks, Jonas Gor-don was knocked out of action with an up-per-body injury.
Friday night, the Dy-namiters head south of the border to face the Spokane Braves, before returning home to host the Golden Rockets at the Kimberley Civic Centre Saturday night.
“The key is making sure we play a team game, keep things sim-ple and take short shifts,” said Nitros head coach Jerry Bancks Thursday afternoon, ac-knowledging his team’s short-handed situation. “You really have to play smart and you have to be disciplined. If you look at the penalty min-utes teams acquire when they’re down [in Spokane], you’ve got to be disciplined or you won’t get any breaks.”
Import forward Keenan Haase, a native of Mission Viejo, Calif., has stepped up in recent weeks and will be looked upon to contin-ue his progression with the injuries up front.
In his last four games, Haase has registered four goals and six points, boosting his season point total to 16 through 29 games.
“He’s a long ways
away from home and it took him a while to ad-just,” Bancks said of his 18-year-old power for-ward. “He’s learned now that there’s no 50/50 puck battles. It’s 80/20 in his favour the way he’s playing and that’s how he needs to play. He’s gaining confidence and he’s a strong kid.
“I’m thrilled with how he’s progressed, the confidence he’s playing with and the strength that he’s show-ing out there…He’s es-tablished himself as one of the top players in the league. Now he needs to act like it. That’s some-times the hard part, to do it every night.”
With the Dynamiters’ doctor’s office full, a pair of affiliate players hope to boost the team’s for-tunes Friday in Spokane.
Forwards James Rota (1998) and Jacob Brom-ley (1998) are expected to travel with the club and suit up against the Braves.
Both players come to the Nitros from the Cranbrook Knights of the South Central Alber-ta Hockey League (Midget AA).
Rota leads the Knights in scoring, with four goals and 16 points through 21 games. Bromley sits second in team scoring with nine goals and 13 points.
Rota has skated in one game with the Dy-namiters so far this sea-son, registering an assist Nov. 21 in Golden. The 15-year-old Kimberley native also dressed in three games with the Dynamiters during the 2013-14 campaign.
For the 16-year-old Bromley, this will be his first appearance with the Dynamiters.
The Braves and Dy-namiters have only met
once so far in the 2014-15 campaign, with Kim-berley edging Spokane 2-1 at the Civic Centre back on Nov. 20.
Dynamiters captain Jason Richter registered both goals in the win, while Braves goaltender Trevor Dilauro made 34 stops to keep the visitors in the game. Jonny Marzec scored the lone tally for Spokane.
The Dynamiters then host the Golden Rockets (17-11-0-5) Sat-urday night. With three games in hand on Gold-en, Kimberley will look to claw back within striking distance of the Rockets, who hold down second place in the Eddie Mountain Divi-sion heading into the weekend.
“All these games be-fore Christmas are big,” Bancks said. “It’s a great opportunity for [Bra-den] Saretsky and [Lin-coln] Lane to get into the lineup and see what it’s like to play within our division and to see the enthusiasm of the crowd here.
“There’s no experi-ence like the Kimberley Dynamiter hockey expe-rience…I’m excited for them to experience that. It’s a gentle warmup be-cause we’ve got Fernie just around the corner and you know the barn will be rocking.”
Saretsky was ac-quired from the Sum-merland Steam Nov. 28 in exchange for Tyson Klingspohn. As for Lane, the official Hockey Can-ada stamps have yet to formally seal a deal be-tween Kimberley and Grand Forks that would see the Border Bruins leading scorer don Dy-namiters black and red. That being said, it is ex-pected he will be cleared to play by Saturday night.

TORONTO - Erie Ot-ters forward Connor McDavid says he hopes to be able to play in an exhibition game ahead of the upcoming world junior hockey champi-onship.

Things went dor-mant, acting-wise, for the next few years, al-though the Epworth (Methodist) League did perform some Shake-
speare on-site for the men of the Robin-son-McKenzie logging company in 1908, which probably counts for something, somewhere. They showed up again at the local gymnasium in 1910, no doubt deter-
mined to bring high drama to the unwashed masses.
Obviously it took some time for the mass-es to wash up because the next local theatrical production was seven years after the previous one. Of course, other communities were treading the boards as well. The Creston Ama-teur Dramatic Society brought a show to Cran-brook in March, 1910; a “genuinely funny come-dy” which played to a large audience. The
Creston troupe prom-ised to return the follow-ing year but never did. Such is theatre.
It may be said that “The Geisha”, performed in March, 1911, in the Auditorium that once stood in the place of the Armond Theatre, marked the Golden Age of local amateur theatre, an age that has miracu-lously continued to the present day. The Geisha featured a cast, crew and ten-piece orchestra made up entirely of local amateurs, all members
of the newly formed Cranbrook Amateur Op-eratic Society, including such names as Kennedy, Drummond, Service, Wilson, Darling, Leitch, Worthington, Manning, Wallinger, Raworth and at least three musicians named Thompson with or without the p, names that would continue to appear until such time as younger players likely came along and booted them out. Such is the-atre.
As far as theatre groups go; Rossland, Summerland, Yellow Point, Vancouver, Kelowna, New West-minster, Victoria and Langham, among oth-ers, all claim to be “one of the oldest theatre companies in B.C.”, which must mean that they all are. Still, Cran-brook can trace its ama-teur theatre roots back for well over a century, and that’s saying some-thing.
And, just for the re-cord, the present-day Cranbrook Community Theatre was formed on the evening of February 5, 1964, just in time for their first production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The executive consisted of Flo Downey, vice-president; Lucille Misisco, treasurer; Betty Neilson and Joan Ab-bott, publicity and, per-haps not surprisingly, Bud Abbott, president.

Dear Annie: I’ve been living with “Mar-cus” for two years, and we’ve known each other for twice that long. We are both in our late 40s. Soon after we moved in together, Marcus became seriously ill. We’ve been through five invasive surgeries, and there may be more.
The most serious illness seems to be under control, but now other debilitating health issues are popping up on the horizon, and I just don’t know what to do. Part of me wants desperately to leave, yet I feel incredi-bly guilty for even thinking of it.
We don’t fight, and we have our good moments. I still am attracted to him, but there is absolutely no sex unless I initiate it -- which I’ve stopped doing because he al-ways has discomfort or pain. We sometimes talk about it, and he says, “You didn’t sign up for this. Why are you still here?”

I feel shallow for missing sex so much, but I honestly can’t imagine living the rest of my life without it. I suggested counseling, with or without me, but Marcus refused. When he dismisses suggestions to work on us, I end up feeling more like a nurse than a lover. And the guilt is eating me up. What can I do? -- Faith
Dear Faith: Marcus has serious health is-sues, and that, plus medication, is undoubt-edly what is causing his lack of desire. It isn’t anything you are doing. And he, too, feels guilt, because his illness prevents you from having the relationship you envisioned. He may have decided against counseling so that you will have a reason to leave him. Please know that your feelings are not unusual. Only you can decide whether or not you love him enough to see him through this, with or without sex. Counseling will help you, even if Marcus chooses not to go.
Dear Annie: I was diagnosed with epilep-sy three years ago, but had milder forms of seizures that went undiagnosed for 23 years. I am on medications that interfere with rela-tionships at home and work.
Of all the major chronic medical con-ditions, epilepsy is surely one of the least understood. Seizures are unpredictable electrical disturbances in the brain that af-fect awareness, movement and sensation. Epilepsy is not contagious, it is not a mental illness, and it is not mental retardation.

STAMBULIC, Vinko (Vince) March 26th, 1935-December 5th, 2014
As the last few notes of “Dante’s Prayer” faded away at the exact hour he would have left for work back home, Vince passed away surrounded by his family’s love in Victoria Hospice after a very short, courageous battle with a rare form of kidney cancer. To Vince, his family and friends were the foundation of his life. The love he bestowed upon them was immeasurable and returned by all who knew him. Vince is now at peace, knowing he has imparted a strong legacy based on his integrity, values, and love of life.Vince was born in Žejane, a village on the Istrian Peninsula in what is today Croatia. For the past 55
years, he has been a proud resident of Cranbrook, BC. Vince was predeceased by his parents Anton and Maria and his brother Tony earlier this year. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Anna of almost 57 years, as well as his children: Tony (Anna) Cranbrook; Mary (Don) Victoria; Rob, Cranbrook; Walter (Patti) Cranbrook, and Eddie (Tammy) Mission. Papa is survived by his 15 grandchildren: Danielle, Brittany, Toni-Marie; Kendra, Michael, Eric, Daniel; Jordan, Matthew, Nathan; Raeanne, Joey; Johnathen, Vincent, and Ashley. He is also survived by his brothers Mike of Cranbrook and Vlado in Žejane and families.Vince was a well-known and respected master builder of quality homes in Cranbrook and the East Kootenays. Over the course of six decades, he built hundreds of homes to exacting standards based on quality, commitment, and loyalty to his customers. Vince had a tremendous work ethic and was in the process of building a house when illness took hold. He treated his customers as friends, and Vince’s handshake was his word: strong, honest, and enduring. Vince loved the outdoors. He often took his children and grandchildren to experience the majestic mountains, lakes, and rivers of the Kootenays. Vince had the quality to see the good in all people. He believed everyone had a gift to offer the world and could see their strengths and inner beauty when they themselves could not.Vince and family extend heartfelt thanks to his many close friends for their support, in particular his long-time friends Terry Segarty and Dr. Lawrence Jewett of Cranbrook. Their love, commitment, and support are greatly appreciated. The family would also like to acknowledge staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, BC Cancer Agency, Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria Hospice and, in particular, Drs. Andrew Attwell, David Brook, and Greg and Cecile Andreas, all of whom treated Vince with dignity, care, and respect. A celebration of Vince’s life will be held at the church he helped build in Cranbrook, Christ the Servant Parish (1100 -14th Avenue South) on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 1:00 pm. man has been charged for taking a dip in a ther-mal pool that is home to a tiny endangered mol-lusk in Banff National Park.
Parks Canada says the man was caught last month bathing at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site - the only place on Earth where the endangered Banff springs snail is found.
The man faces charges of damaging or destroying critical habi-tat under the federal Species At Risk Act and of entering a restricted area.
Parks Canada says the charges carry penal-ties, including fines, of up to $75,000 and one year in jail.
The man, who Parks Canada did not name, is to appear in Canmore court on Jan. 14.
Parks Canada says the snail made history in 1997 as the first mol-lusk ever to be listed as threatened by the Com-mittee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. It is considered the most at-risk species in Banff park.
A government web-site says the snail was redesignated as endan-gered in 2000, which means it faces immi-nent extirpation or ex-tinction.
Parks Canada says the snails thrive in water between 30° and 36°C - which is slightly cooler than the average relax-ing bath.
The government says people who bathe in the thermal spring pool can kill or harm snails by disturbing their eggs or fouling the water with chemicals, deodorants and insect repellents.

cougar orphaned in Cal-gary has found a new home.
The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society says the cougar was dropped off at its centre last month, after being found alone in the snow.
The society says cou-gars can’t be raised in
captivity then released back into the wild.
So they had the op-tion of keeping the fe-male cub in captivity, releasing her into the wild, or putting it down.
Officials say a home has been found at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg.
She was transferred there earlier this week.

Mary Fedorchuk (nee Mesenchuk)
1922 - 2014It is with deep sorrow that the family of Mary Fedorchuk announces her passing on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 in Cranbrook at 92 years of age.
Mary was born on September 25, 1922 in Yorkton, SK. She was the
youngest of seven children. She married Nick Fedorchuk on October 29, 1941. They relocated from Saskatchewan to Creston, BC in 1946. In 1948 they moved again, this time to Cranbrook, where Mary has since resided. After her husband Nick passed away in 1970, Mary entered into the workforce spending 2 years with Stedman’s store and 10 years at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital in the laundry department. Mary enjoyed her time at the hospital. She found it very meaningful – not just a job, but helping people. She was happiest while with her children and proud of them all. Having grandchildren, and then great grandchildren gave her great pleasure. Mary will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Mary is survived by her sons Don (Katy) of Cranbrook and Merv (Ardell) of Kamloops; daughters Sharon (Richard) of Creston and Norma (Dewie) of Creston; her grandchildren Rob (Dawn), Karen (Ron), Susanna (Mike), Carrie-Anne, Jason (Lynn), Jonathan (Krista), Heather and Tracy; and her great grandchildren Kimber-lee, Caitlin, Jake, Ava and Parker. She was predeceased by her husband Nick, two sisters and four brothers.
A memorial service for Mary will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 11:00 am at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s honour may be made to the: East Kootenay Foundation for Health, c/o East Kootenay Regional Hospital, 13 – 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9.
