March 2017

As I prepare to write my short piece for the monthly newsletter I like to review my writings from years past. It seems I have always referred to March as a month of excitement and chaos. As I reflect upon the calendar for March 2017 I have come to realize it’s really a month of celebration! Our students are able to celebrate their hard work in preparation for culminating events like the district vocal music festivals; State competitions for DECA, HOSA, and Skills USA; Key Club District Convention, Rube Goldberg, Forensics, and athletic tournaments. When I reflect upon our students success in all of these areas I am in awe. Our advisors, directors, and coaches make sure our students are well prepared for these events. I appreciate and celebrate their commitment to co-curricular activities.

It was nice to see a strong turn-out at Parent Teacher Conferences. Thank you for your patience as we implemented a time scheduling process with teachers in their classrooms. I appreciated the feedback and suggestions that will be part of our review of the new process.

Finally, we are approaching the end of quarter three and I urge parents to continue to check student progress on Infinite Campus and if you have questions please contact your son or daughter’s teacher as soon as possible.

Enjoy the celebrations of March!!

KHS Art Students Awarded Honors at the Scholastic Arts Competition

Several KHS Students and their families attended the Scholastic Arts Awards at the Milwaukee Art Museum on February 11th, where hundreds of pieces of student work was recognized statewide in the Scholastic Arts Exhibition. Three of our students were surprised with five honorary awards in addition to the 18 Honorable mentions, silver, and gold key awards announced in January. Kyle Gietman was awarded $250 as the recipient for the Milwaukee Art Museum Docent Award, and another $250 from the Mary E. Kelley Award. Jordanne Thiel was awarded $100 through the Peter and Wendy Crawford Award. McKinley Hammatt received the Museum of Wisconsin Art Award, and a family membership to the Milwaukee Art Museum. She also received the “American Visions Award” which is the highest honor of the show as the selected regional winner. Scholastic Arts states the criteria for American Visions Award, “exemplifies originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.” Kinley received this award with her oil painting titled “Maren.” Her piece was selected from over 3,700 initial entries to represent this region for Scholastic Arts! She along with four other students in the state of Wisconsin will have their artwork juried for national recognition. The recipients will be notified on March 14th. The National Young Artists Awards will be present-ed in New York City at Carnegie Hall on June 8th. Kinley’s painting was created with a great level of thought and depth as a way to honor her friend’s experience to reach out to teens who may suffer from body image and eating disorders. She hopes to help others find strength from within to develop a healthy relationship with themselves. Her artist statement (below) was submitted along with the painting. We wish you the best of luck, Kinley! The Scholastic Arts Show is on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum until March 19th, where Kinley’s painting, as well as other KHS students work can be seen. For more information about The Scholastic Arts Awards, please visit www.artandwriting.org For more information about the current Scholastic exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum visit: www.mam.org

MAREN

By: Kinley Hammatt

The feeling you get while looking at this image should be a statement enough. However, Maren is not only a sick young girl, eaten away by her lack of eating. Maren is a beautiful young Norwegian woman with a beautiful smile and glistening green eyes. She has a passion for photography and the true beauty that nature holds. She has so many people who adore her and her astonishing talents. The image you see here is what she calls, “The most honest photo she has ever taken”. This is her being honest about the darkest parts of herself. Can you imagine? Can you imagine looking happy on the outside, and then hiding where your bones show all too clearly? Imagine looking in the mirror and always thinking you are fat, ugly, not thin enough. Even when being fed through a tube, and later finding out other girls say, “Wow, I wish I was as skinny as her!” How could that feel? It’s not a compliment for her. Sharing her story and how sick she has been for years, she shows the gut wrenching truth about eat disorders and how ugly they really are. Not enough people measure themselves in smiles and strength, instead of pounds. When creating this piece, I first decided to mix a dark grey color to be used instead of black. I did this because there is nothing black and white about mental disorders, eating disorders, or the mental suffering that can change your entire life. No case is the same nor the people who live day by day with these ailments. The color is purposely subtle. As someone who has experienced mental and eating disorders, I can attest that the world seems dimmer when your mental health is suffering. Colors aren't so vibrant and tastes aren't as strong. We need to be careful what we attach the words “I am” to. The things you claim you are, have a way of turning back and claiming you. “Get off the scale! I have yet to see a scale that can tell you how enchanting your eyes are. I have yet to see a scale that can show you

how wonderful your hair looks when the sun shines its glorious rays on it. I have yet to see a scale that can thank you for your compassion, sense of humor, and contagious smile. Get off the scale because I have yet to see one that can admire you for your

perseverance when challenged in life.” – Steve Maraboli

September 23, 2016

Dear Kimberly High School Parent or Guardian, Beginning in the 14-15 school year, the state of Wisconsin introduced a number of changes to the state’s student assessment system. Since that time, those changes have remained consistent and include: Aspire Early High School Assessment – grades nine and ten ACT and WorkKeys – grade eleven Forward Social Studies assessment – grade ten The ACT Early High School Assessment will cover five subject areas for students in grades nine and ten: Reading, Math, Writing, Language Arts and Science. The tests will be computer-delivered and will be spread out over multiple days. Students in grade nine will test during their English classes the weeks of April 24 and May 1. Students in grade ten will test on April 25 & 26 during a modified school schedule. In addition, students in grade ten will take the Wisconsin Forward Exam, a Social Studies-only test that will be administered by computer on Wednesday, April 26. In addition, for the third year, every junior in the state of Wisconsin is required to take the ACT and Work Keys assessments. This year those tests will be held on February 28 and March 1. All juniors will report those dates during a modified school schedule. Please note the modified school schedules listed on the next pages. Additional information about the ACT Early High School and Forward assessments will be shared as they become available. If you have questions about the ACT Aspire Early High School assessment, please contact me by phone or email.

The final trip payment is due March 1. A spreadsheet with everyone's final amount due is

posted on the bulletin board in the band hallway. Please do not overpay, as the school

cannot issue refunds! The spreadsheet lists payments that have already been submitted and

deducts profits from your personal band account. The FINAL AMOUNT DUE is clearly posted.

Monday, April 10 at 7:00 pm in the LGI. Documents requiring student and parent signatures

will be discussed at this meeting. Several pertinent pieces of information will be covered

including rules, expectations, handling/distribution of prescription medication, what to

bring/wear, and general trip information. The final itinerary will also be shared. PARENTS:
