Lesson 11: Caring and HelpingKindergarten, Unit 2
What Is My Child Learning?Your child is learning how to show care and concern by saying or doing something kind or helpful. This is called showing compassion.
Why Is This Important?Being able to show compassion helps children get along with others.
Ask your child: What does showing compassion mean? Possible answers: It means saying something kind or doing something to help. It shows you care about how someone feels.
When is a time you can show compassion for someone else? Possible answers: When someone is feeling sad, lonely, tired, or frustrated.
How do you feel when someone says something kind or helps you out? Possible answers: happy, special.
Practice at HomeHelp your child notice when someone he or she knows could use some help or a kind word. For example:
• I see that your sister can’t find her toy. What could you do to help?• It sure looks like Uncle Milo could use some help cleaning the sidewalk. Is that something you
could do?
ActivityTogether with your child, write down ways that your child could or does help at home. For example: Help carry in groceries.

Art Class: In observance of Mother’s Day this Sunday, I thought this would be a nice project to do. Right now
I think that all the mothers out there could use a little something from us to say thank you. And not just for
loving us and taking care of us, but for having to also take on the job of
educator!! I hope everyone enjoys this!
Materials:
-construction paper in various colors (if you do not have construction
paper, simply use white paper and add color with crayon, marker or
paint)
-scissors
-glue
-something to glue your project to (cardboard, poster board, box lid)
-any other objects like glitter, confetti, or pom poms to add detail (this step is optional)
The first step to this project is to trace your hand on 3 sheets of colored paper. Keep in mind, you will want to
spread your fingers out so you have room to cut around all your fingers! (Remember if you do not have
colored paper, use white then add color yourself). After your hand is traced on all sheets, you can begin
cutting them out. Try to cut as close to the line that you can. Go slowly, sometimes this can be a process, but
it is great practice for these little guys!! After hands are cut out, you will want to cut out some stems and
leaves.
Once everything is cut out, you will need something to glue all your pieces to. You can choose another sheet of
construction paper or anything else that you have lying around the house. I would start with gluing a hand right
in the middle of your paper toward the top. Make sure that you are gluing around the outside and not going
GLUE CRAZY!! After the first hand is glued, add the second cut out hand to one side, making sure to slightly
overlap. The next hand can be glued on the opposite side of the first hand, again overlapping a bit. Now you
are ready to add three stems and a few leaves to each stem.
For the last step, you have a few options, you can draw a vase on a sheet of paper, cut it out and glue it to the
paper with the flowers and stems, or you can tie a ribbon into a bow and glue it in the middle of the stems. I
will leave this decision up to you. If you want to add detail, you can. The example has glitter on the hands, but
you could add shapes, pom poms, confetti or keep them plain if you so choose. OH, and don't forget to write a
small message to mom and tell her that you love her!! If you need anything, please do not hesitate to email
me.
Miss you,
Mrs. Stoike
