Kindness

In describing the new life in the last half of

Ephesians 4, Paul wrote, “Let all bitterness and

wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put

away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one

another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as

God in Christ forgave you” (31-32). Avoiding the

bad is not the end goal for the Christian. Yes,

Christians ought to work hard to put off bitterness,

wrath, anger, clamor, slander, and malice. But, the

end goal is not empty character; it is good character.

Christians are to be kind to one another.

Kindness is such an important trait that people have

developed different slogans to try to emphasize it.

“You can catch more flies with honey than you can

with vinegar.” “If you want to win the world, melt it

rather than hammer it.”

A kind word or a gentle gesture can have

significant impact. Doesn't it make you feel good

inside when you see someone hold the door open for

another? Or to see someone with a cart overflowing

with groceries allow the person behind them with

one item go in from of them?

Think about the difference: how do you feel

when someone makes a snide remark about you or

about your actions? Then, how do you feel when

someone offers you a genuine compliment?

The point? Get rid of the bitterness and the

malice, and put in their place genuine kindness.

Kindness shows up in the way you talk to and about

others. Kindness shows up in the way you treat

others.

See you Sunday, full of kindness... --David

Happy Father's Day! Don't know what to give dad for father's day? Take a hint from Proverbs 10:1, “A wise

son makes a glad father.” The greatest gift a child can give dad is to live a righteous,

Christ-centered life.

In honor of Father's Day, I surfed the net to find quotes about fathers. Some are a little

funny, some honor fathers, and some challenge fathers to be what they ought to be. I

hope you find them enjoyable. --David

“He didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it” (Clarence Budington

Kelland).

“By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who

thinks he's wrong (Charles Wadsworth).

“What a father says to his children is not heard by the world, but it will be heard by

posterity” (Jean Paul Richter).

“A man's children and his garden both reflect the amount of weeding done during the

growing season” (Unknown).

“Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, story-tellers, and

singers of songs” (Pam Brown).

“My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and

say, 'You're tearing up the grass.' 'We're not raising grass,' Dad would reply. 'We're

raising boys.'” (Harmon Killebrew).

“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope” (Bill Cosby).

“A father carries pictures where his money used to be” (Unknown).

“Dad, you're someone to look up to no matter how tall I've grown” (Unknown).

You will find that if you really try to be a father, your child will meet you halfway”

(Robert Brault).

“It is much easier to become a father than to be one” (Kent Nerburn, Letters to My Son:

Reflections on Becoming a Man, 1994).

It's almost here! Our VBS begins next

Sunday evening. You may register your children

online or there are registration forms on the table

see Titus Smith or Renee Barrios. A lot of

planning, organization and work has already taken

place and a special thanks goes to Titus Smith,

Renee Barrios, Robi Seward, Gaythel Fisher, Dee

Close, Sharon Close and others. Don't forget that

we need cookies! Our hats are off to those who

will help prepare the food for the market place

next week and to the teens who will help with the

skits, puppets, etc. It is really a whole

congregational effort and we appreciate everyone

who helps in any manner and of course those who

attend.

Our adults will have classes this year

taught by Keith Loveless, Philip Slate, Ron Hinton

and Bill Estes. Don't miss it!

SYMPATHY

Our sympathy is extended to the family of

Roger Johnson, a former minister at the Union

Avenue/Woodland Hills congregation. Roger's mother,

Margie Johnson, passed from this life on Sunday, June

3rd

. Many of us knew and loved Mrs Johnson. Her

funeral service was held on Saturday, June 9th, at

Columbus, MS at the 7th Street Church of Christ where

she and her husband worked and worshiped for many

years. If you would like to send cards to the family, the

address is:4974 Glacier Dr., Columbus, GA 31907-

1700.

SMALL GROUP PARTICIPATION Three weeks ago we made an oral announcement about our small groups. Today it is important for every member to get a copy of the document. “Woodland Hills Small Groups in a Nutshell,” read it, and decide whether you will participate in this meaningful and satisfying activity. Follow the brief directions on the document if you plan

to participate. Philip Slate
