Praise Newsletter Issue 4: 10th July 2020

We have been delighted to see so many of our students and their parents/carers over the last couple of weeks as a result of Year 10 lessons, the Microsoft Teams support sessions

and the heads of year consultation meetings. We hope you have found these opportunities useful.

We are now looking forward to seeing all our students returning in September. A reminder that Year 7 and 12 students return on Wednesday 2nd September and Years 8, 9, 10, 11

and 13 return on Thursday 3rd September.

As always we are very proud of the work students have produced in these difficult times. Teachers have highlighted a number of students who have submitted work of an

excellent standard or that demonstrates an excellent work ethic.

Well done to all our students. Have a wonderful summer holiday!

BUSINESS

Well done to the Year 9 ‘brilliant business’ for amazing work throughout the whole of lockdown, especially Grace Bates, Ashleigh Hill, Scarlett Paczowski, Natasha Ragsdale, William Vickers-Ward, Oliver Thornhill, Ethan Clarke, Dan Philpotts, Sophie Ratcliffe, Ollie Whitefood. Amazing work from the Year 10 ‘business brains’, especially William Dearlove, Harvey Green, Josh King, Josie Millman, Jorja Parsons, George Scott Year 12 business ‘business braves’ Caitlin Lavelle, Taylor Stephens, Jakob Holland, Jack Bourne James Harries. We are so proud of the hard work you have put in during lockdown. Be brilliant, Miss Watkins and Miss Bott.

COMPUTING

Piotr Fiodorow - Year 7 Produced excellent programs within the new Micro:bit tasks – he even recorded videos of his programs working and showing him experimenting with the software! It’s great to see students exploring more of what programming can offer.

Thomas Timmins - Year 7 Produced some perfect programs in Micro:bit. Considering this is likely to be his first time programming, his code is very clear and does exactly what the tasks ask him to do. Great work!

Ethan Everett - Year 8 Ethan analysed 3 websites in a great amount of detail and was able to justify which design he thought was best to a very high degree!

Alexia Robinson - Year 8 Produced a fantastic analysis of the design of 3 websites and achieved 100% in her weekly quiz! Her work was of a very high standard and far above that expected a year 8 student.

Grace Taylor - Year 8 Consistently produces work of the highest quality. Her thoughts and comments about website design this week are a particular standout!

Sapphire Lee - Year 9 For creating an excellent interactive product which has fantastic use of design elements on all slides. An example is shown below!

Charles White - Year 9

Charles has been working really hard throughout the lockdown and has made sure to ask questions when he needs advice. In his most recent work on embedded systems he produced very detailed examples and achieved top marks in the end of session quiz!

Josh Houghton - Year 9 Josh has been working incredibly hard throughout the lockdown and has always ensured that his work is produced to the best of his ability and responds to the individual feedback given to him. His efforts and high quality of work are impressive. He has scored 100% in many quizzes, but the standout result has to be his work on the CPU.

Daniel Raxter - Year 9 Daniel has completed his work within the first few hours of receiving it, every single week! His work is always of a top quality and his swift and comprehensive responses each week do not go unnoticed.

Daniel Simms - Year 10

For battling on when the programming challenges got tough! Dan created a super program which produces all years within a range that have repeated digits and a program for calculating whether a word is a palindrome or not. You can see his code below!

Megan Lloyd - Year 10

Megan always produces outstanding work, but she excels at her programming. This week, when creating a program to only print out years with repeating numbers in them (a hard task I might add), she came up with her own ingenious solution, using a function making the program very readable and clear. Using high level skills to produce high quality results is always appreciated!

ENGLISH

Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed hearing and reading the students work that they have started to upload to Microsoft Teams. The example below is from a Year 9 student writing about the Shakespeare play `Othello`. The English department have been really impressed with the level of commitment to these pieces of work and how must students have remembered from their English lessons! Well done to all of our students who have uploaded work so far.

Frankie Cooksley – Year 9

`A clear evening sky engulfed the solemn land of Cyprus and armies of distant stars watched the dreary civilisation down below. Michael Cassio stood stout on guard on the streets outside the army barracks. In the nearby distance, Cassio noticed a figure approaching him through the vague light of the flickering lampposts: Iago. Cassio was relieved to have Iago on watch with him on the peaceful yet interminable evening night, but Iago had other ideas planned. The clock tower struck half past eight and chimes eerily echoed through the extremely empty streets. It was unusually dark for the time it was. Cassio greeted Iago after the chimes died down and invited him to come join him in watch.`

Work sent – Tyler Hughes – Year 10

We have had a number of students getting to grips with MS Teams but when some have struggled they have also send work to us via email. It has been wonderful to see so many students completing tasks and wanting feedback on how they are getting on! Below is an example from Tyler in Year 10 who has been sending work every week to his teacher. Well done to all of our students who are really showing their determination!

Harlun Davies - Year 8

Many students have been doing their work and uploading the tasks each week. Some students have gone above and beyond and have sent in pictures of all the work they have completed as they are so proud of what they have accomplished. Below is an image of one of our Year 8 students who has been sending through his work each week.

Extension Work – Lexie Price - Year 7

Year 7, 8 and 9 have been sent exciting tasks to finish their studies of the texts they were reading in class such as The Woman in Black, Romeo and Juliet and Othello. We have had some excellent responses to the tasks which were in addition to their timetabled work. Well done to all the students who have completed the task sheets whether it be the bronze, silver or gold tasks! Below is an example from a Year 7 student completed the gold task from The Woman in Black task sheet. I was there to find valuables as they were in debt. There was an old abandoned house, this house had ivy covered gates there was no way I was going to get through there. I couldn’t go through the gates I couldn’t get under the gates and I couldn’t go over the gates. I walked around but it was no use It kept getting worse, so I decided to go and lean on the wall again this time I felt as though I was falling back. I was not imagining this. I was falling back! I managed to get myself back up and turn around to find that some bricks had fell out. Enough for me to get through. The house walls covered with ivy from base to roof. A green mesh covered the whole house with little cut out holes just for people to see through, but the strangest thing was there was only one key.

Nomination from Class Teacher Emma Chaloner - Year 8

Emma Chaloner in Year 8 has been completing her work with clear determination, precision and with great care over the past few weeks. Here is an example of her work where it is clear she has

Page 4: King Charles I School · `A clear evening sky engulfed the solemn land of Cyprus and armies of distant stars watched the dreary civilisation down below. Michael Cassio stood stout

Nomination from Class Teacher Lauren Smith—Year 9

Over the past 12 weeks we have been receiving some excellent work where it is clear that students have used their knowledge and understanding but also their creativity. Students have been asked to complete a range of tasks such as reports, creative writing, comprehension and analysis. Below is an example from Lauren Smith in Year 9 who completed the job advert for a police officer.

Nomination from Class Teacher Aiden Morris - Year 9

The new online platform Educake has been a real success over the past half term with the students in Years 7-10. Some students have even retaken some of the tasks to achieve 100% pass rate. Aidan Morris in Year 9 was one of these students who was determined to get 100% pass rate – well done!

Nomination from Class Teacher Jasmine Mawby - Year 10

Jasmine Mawby in Year 10 has received another nomination for the final praise newsletter. She's really gone above and beyond with her work over the last few weeks - producing at least one additional essay response a week and sometimes two or three - on top of the compulsory weekly tasks. She has really mastered writing high-quality PEARL paragraphs, especially developing her language analysis with multiple interpretations and integrating context. We have also been impressed with how much she values getting feedback and doing additional research to improve her knowledge. Well done Jasmine!

Effort Nominations from Class Teacher

A number of students have been showing us their determination to continue learning at home by sending in extra work, asking for feedback and help as well as putting 100% effort in to each task they complete. A few students in particular that have shown these traits continuously are Lewis Hasley - Year 8, Will Robinson - Year 9 and Georgia Tyler -Year 9.

Online Junior Maths Challenge 2020

Forty-two of our most gifted and talented mathematicians from Years 7 and 8 recently took part in UKMT’s Junior Maths Challenge. Due to the circumstances, this year’s Challenge took place online. The Challenge is a national competition whereby approximately 4,000 schools in the UK take part each year. The 1-hour long paper contains high-ly challenging multiple choice problem questions. The Maths Department are pleased to report an ex-cellent set of results this year; students are awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates if they score above the respective thresholds - only 40% of participants receive certificates nationally.
