the evolution ofprintI recently sat talking to my dad about how the printing industry has changed over the years. For those of you who don’t know, my father Derek established Kingfisher over 30 years ago in 1982. He recently retired and handed the running of the business over to the second generation of the Bellotti family.

The comparisons to our industry from when he ran

Kingfisher Print & Design ten years ago are

unrecognisable. I joked that in the time he would have

had to get a quote back to his customers we would have

quoted the job, received and approved the artwork,

printed and delivered it! After much heated discussion

we agreed this is actually a true fact.

Dad said in the ‘good old days’ he would receive an

enquiry from a customer and it wasn’t uncommon not to

respond for at least three days, with print deadlines

averaging seven to ten days. Today our average print

turnaround is three to four days.

In the ‘good old days’, as long as your customer service

was slightly better than your competitor it was deemed

acceptable. We are now, rightly so, benchmarked against

the service you would receive in a top restaurant and if

you have any online ordering it needs to be of Amazon

standard - and why not!

Printers are offering a service so why shouldn’t it be the

best. Why shouldn’t we give first class customer service

all of the time? Our aim is to do this - there is always

room for improvement but on the whole I would like to

think that our approach to customer service is one

that would rival any other service driven industry.

Print is evolving. Customer demands are increasing,

and we need to not only keep up with these, but also a

step ahead by continually presenting new and innovative

ways that print can be used.

Our recent move into web2print with our communications

tool kit is testament of how we want to make sure we are

evolving too. We know we need to make the ordering

process as slick and efficient as possible and ordering

online is the way many of our clients are now choosing

to buy print. In my humble opinion the key to making this

type of process successful is to offer a brilliantly simple

solution which is user friendly without the danger of

becoming a faceless online company.

Many of you have told us that our strength is in our

people - we’ve made sure that the guys here at

Kingfisher, with all the years of print knowledge & design

experience, will work alongside our online solution to

ensure you get the best possible service.

Lots of our clients already use our online artwork portal to upload and

approve artwork ready for print. Print ready artwork is uploaded to a link

that is sent out by email, on receipt of an order the files are uploaded,

preflighted and approved 24 hours a day - without the need to wait for

anyone from Kingfisher Print & Design to intervene. One of the benefits

is that they can have this process completed in the time they would

have saved the files and sent them across for us to check! This solution

is great for agencies and the clients we work with who produce their

own artwork. So what about our end users who rely on us, or an agency

to create branded print ready artwork. Well this is where our web2print

communications tool kit comes in.

Many of our customers are multi-site organisations who have a

strong brand that can be in danger of becoming diluted across the

organisation, and costly to keep updating with redesign and amendments.

Our web2print site has been built to accommodate each and every

element of an organisation’s marketing material – regardless of whether

it’s printed or not. We understand that a brand needs to be consistent

across a number of different medias and our rules based system allows

this - saving a lot of time and money.

A rules based system basically means that you ‘set’ the parameters of

how big (or small) each product can be designed and printed, what

strap lines, fonts & pictures can and can’t be used and which offices are

authorised to order what products. It is this type of system that allows us

to keep interacting with our customers - finding out how their marketing

tools need to be used and to offer quick and simple ways to amend and

order them.

Print is evolving and so are we. We are not going to hide behind the

changes to our economy or our industry and use it as an excuse not to

move forward. We want to embrace these challenges to make our

organisation more customer focused and at the forefront of the print

and communications industry.

“I was given a choice at school: pursue either arts or sciences. There was no happy medium on offer for a boy who enjoyed solving problems and making things with his hands. I stumbled across my flair for design engineering by mistake. Forty years on, I’m passionate about it. And I realised what I missed out on at school.”

explorer offsetAfter a good few months of testing uncoated

paper stocks through our digital press we are

all in favour of using and recommending

explorer offset for the majority of our uncoated

digital printing. Explorer offset is a FSC® mix

credit, bright white paper and board with

excellent opacity, bulk and surface

smoothness - all of which have been

engineered to provide super print quality.

For quick turnaround digital jobs we hold stock of 110gsm,

160gsm and 300gsm and for litho printing we can order a

comprehensive range from 80gsm through to 400gsm.

getting inkedInk, or as some newbie’s to the print game call it - paint! Ink is something that, as printers, we take for granted that it will - a. work and b. cause us no issues. In most cases this is true but when you look at how press technology has changed ink is still trying to catch up.

Ink has changed massively over the

years - it was originally made using

loads of unsustainable products, crude oil being one.

We now have a product which is made of vegetable minerals

and sustainable components.

The down side to this is that the quality of the ink has not evolved as

fast as the press technology and this causes problems as the presses

now run superfast and the ink cannot always keep up! The original

mix was made from presses that would run at speeds of up to

10,000 sheets per hour but now our press runs at 18,000 sheets

per hour – a massive difference!

Running at high speeds generates heat from the friction of the rollers.

This makes the viscosity of the ink poor which in turn causes ink fly.

The viscosity of the ink means that when the inking rollers on the press

are spinning so fast the ink cannot hold on. You know when you are

down at the funfair on the waltzers and you are shoved into the corner

of the ride, usually by someone rather larger than yourself - well this is

the same effect, you want to stay where you started but you just can’t

hold on!

The ink flies off the rollers into tiny threads which float around and

normally stick to the nearest solid thing they can find - no not the printer

but the frames and guards of the press! Hence why when you look at a

multi coloured press the units have a tinge of the colours that are mainly

printed on them.

The standard measurement of paper size uses the ISO system, most commonly the A Series.

This series of paper sizes is

based on proportion, so the

measurements of a sheet are

directly related to those of the

size above or below it.

Using standard sizes reduces

waste, and is good for the

environment. However, often

non-standard formats are chosen

for greater impact, to set a piece

apart from others: sometimes

a balance needs to be found

to create an exciting piece that

which has minimum impact on

the environment.

It is possible to maximise

resources: talk to us about how

to best use the space available

to keep costs — both to yourself

and the environment — down.
