WELCOME

Thank you for picking up this booklet: in it, you will find all the information about choral services, organ recitals and concerts in King’s College Chapel between April and July 2018.

Weekends during Easter term see some of the great occasions and traditions of the Chapel year. On Sunday May 13, I am delighted that Bridget Kendall will give the ‘Sermon Before the University’ at Matins; Bridget’s work as an international correspondent has given her remarkable insight into some of the major political upheavals of recent decades. We will celebrate Whitsun with a service of Confirmation, over which the Bishop of Ely will preside. Another guest this term is the Reverend Carol Barrett Ford, Chaplain and Acting Dean of St John’s, and we look forward to her sermon in June. Another preacher is Professor Gareth Austin, Fellow of King's and specialist in Economic History. At the final service of term, there will be a special ceremony of valediction of the leaving members of the Choir.

We also have some special services on weekdays. The Sequence on Monday May 7 will continue our Monday-evening exploration of the spirituality of Julian of Norwich, with words and music based on her remarkable ‘Parable of the Master and the Servant’ from Revelations of Divine Love. On Friday May 11, we will be joined by children from our school, and their parents, for Evensong. On Friday May 18, we will commemorate our Royal Founder, King Henry VI, in a sung Requiem with the Ceremony of Roses and Lilies.

We continue to have public services every day at 12.30 in a side-chapel. On Wednesdays there will be a period of silent mediation in the Memorial Chapel, allowing us to ponder the reality of the First World and its dreadful cost: the awful tragedy, in which lie the roots of our ‘Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols’.

Whether you are a College member, a regular attender of services, an occasional visitor, or a person who knows us through our webcasting, I offer you hope that, whenever and however you share in the life of the Chapel, you will be inspired, encouraged and refreshed.

The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry

Dean

INTRODUCTORY NOTICES

CHORAL SERVICES

Members of the public are welcome at all services. The top stalls are reserved for members of King’s College and their guests. Members of the University, upon making themselves known to the Chapel staff, may be invited to sit in the sub-stalls.

Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays and from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices, the College’s mixed-voice choir, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Services on weekdays normally last about 45 minutes, while at the weekend they last a little longer – up to 55 minutes. Services of Holy Eucharist on Sundays and Feast Days, at which a sermon or homily is preached and a full Mass setting sung, may last up to an hour and a quarter. Those who are unable to remain in Chapel for the entire service are respectfully asked to sit in the Ante-Chapel.

In King’s Chapel, we are using a lectionary devised specifically for our needs. This is because the existing lectionaries provided by the Church of England do not always suit our particular circumstances. The College Lectionary aims to nourish the community for which the Chapel exists, while at the same time providing readings which can be heard profitably by visitors without being obscure or mystifying.

Plainsong is often sung at services here, especially at sung Eucharists and when only the choral scholars sing. In particular, the Introit, Alleluia, Communion and occasionally the Ordinary parts of the Mass are usually sung to plainsong from the Graduale Romanum.

The numbers printed next to Introits, anthems and motets correspond to those found in the red anthem books; the numbers next to the psalms to those in the blue psalters; and the numbers next to the hymns to those in the green hymnals.

LUNCHTIME SERVICES

Most weekdays, there is a celebration of the Eucharist at 12.30 in a side chapel. However, when the choral evening service is a Eucharist, the 12.30 service will be the Office of Readings, at which we hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the great spiritual writers. Also, on Wednesdays in 2018, will be a period of silent meditation in the Memorial Chapel from 12.30 to 12.50.

CHAPEL COLLECTIONS

The College receives no money from public or church funds to support the life of the Chapel and Choir, so we ask you to give generously to the retiring collections taken after services and recitals. Envelopes are available for your gift throughout the Chapel: please use them for your donation, completing the Gift Aid details if you are a UK taxpayer.

Twenty percent of all donations received in collections is given to charities as determined by the College’s Charitable Donations Committee, chaired by the Chaplain. For the Michaelmas Term 2017, grants were allocated to Women’s Aid Cambridge, Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre, Ventures and Falcons (camps for disadvantaged children), Karuna Trust (work with Dalit women and children in India and Nepal) and Against Malaria Foundation.

The Dean is always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to make a significant or ongoing donation to support some aspect of the Chapel’s life.

INTRODUCTORY NOTICES

RECITALS

The usual termly series continues. On Saturday 5 May, there will instead be a concert given by the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir. Our own Choir has been to Copenhagen, and we are delighted to be hosting this fine ensemble in return. On Saturday 19 May, the Lisney sisters, Emma and Joy, will join Stephen Cleobury in a work for organ, violin and ’cello by Rheinberger.

MUSIC

On Sunday 6 May, a small string ensemble will accompany the Choir in Schubert’s Mass in G at the Sung Eucharist at 10.30. Verdi’s grand setting of the Te Deum will be heard at Matins on Sunday 13 May on the occasion of the ‘Sermon before the University’. Movements from Victoria’s great 6-part setting of the Requiem will be sung at the annual commemoration of the Founder’s Obit on May 18. The evening canticles of Byrd’s monumental Great Service are included in evensong on Trinity Sunday, May 27. As the term proceeds, movements from Howells’ An English Mass will be included in some of the eucharistic celebrations, and most of the Songs of Farewell by Parry will be sung as evensong anthems, thus marking the centenary of this composer. Once again, the year closes with music requested by the choral scholars and choristers who are leaving the Choir at this time.

Dr Stephen Cleobury

Director of Music

INTRODUCTORY NOTICES

KING’S COLLEGE CHOIR CDS

Choir recordings are available from the King’s College website and, by purchasing the Choir’s CDs from the College, you are directly supporting the activities of the Chapel and Choir.

The most recent release is a new recording of motets by the English Renaissance composer, William Byrd. This collection of motets spans the entire liturgical year and features some of the finest English Renaissance polyphony in existence. Music on this CD is sung regularly by the Choir in choral services throughout the year; better-known motets, such as Ave verum corpus, are featured alongside lesser-known but equally beautiful works.

This term sees two new live releases, both of which are made available to stream and download. On 1 May, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the King’s Singers, founded by a group of choral scholars in 1968, with a live recording of To Stand in this House by the contemporary composer, Nico Muhly. This is followed in June by another digital live release of Francis Grier’s lit by holy fire, written for and sung by King’s College Choir. All recordings are available to buy and to download from www.kingscollegerecordings.com, as well as from the King’s College Visitor Centre during the day: use the code visitor10 for a 10% discount.

BECOMING A MEMBER OF THE CHOIR

If you know a boy in school-year 2, 3 or 4 who likes singing and enjoys music, do please consider contacting the Choir Office to learn about becoming a chorister here at [email protected] or on 01223 331224. Chorister auditions are usually held in January and September. However, we warmly welcome enquiries, and the opportunity to meet those who might be interested, at any time. Likewise, enquiries are welcomed from prospective choral and organ scholars.
