Every summer Kings County does 3 bus trips,one to the Nova Scotia International Tattoo,and two others either to the South Shore, orto Halifax. RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM This 10 week program is offered to the children and youth of KingsCounty as part of our Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Minimumage is 4 years old, we recommend starting your child at 5 years old.(Participants must be at least 3.5 feet tall so they can stand in theshallow end)

Winter program starts January 4th, 2014.

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Saturdays.

Location: Nova Scotia Youth Facility, Waterville (1442 CountyHome Rd)

Cost: $40 for up to Level 6 (30 minute class), $45 levels 7-10 (45minute class) $65 Bronze Star

Spring Registration will be March 17, 2014 in person only, at 5:00

The NS Youth Facility Pool in Waterville is available for rental forbirthday parties or other group swims.

The KIDSPORT Program can assist youth reg-istering in sports which have member associ-

ations at Sport Nova Scotia, with up to $

300.00 per year/per child available to for reg-

istration and/or equipment costs. There are

qualifying levels of family income (depending

on family size) and proof of income must be

supplied (tax assessment). Kidsport does not

fund the following activities: Sports camps,

Day camps, swim lessons, Boy Scouts/Girl

Guides, dance, or other non sport programs

however Jumpstart does fund these. TheKidsport Program is administered everytwo months with application deadlinesof Jan 1, March 1, May 1, July 1, Septem-ber 1 and November 1 in effect each year.

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Programalso has a local chapter in Kings County and

can assist children and youth under 19 years

with up to $ 300.00 per year for registration

costs of any active recreation or sports pro-

gram.

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program isadministered three times per year in mid–April, early July and early October withdeadline dates varying slightly each year.

Both Eastern Kings and Western Kings have

Active Kids Healthy Kids funds to support

Community groups who are increasing youth

physical activity levels through creative, non-

traditional physical activity initiatives. No proj-

ect is too small! Be creative!

Successful projects will:

• Increase the ability of the group or com-

munity to provide ongoing physical activi-

ties and leadership

• Be able to report on the progress of the

project

• Show your group needs funding support

• Involve youth in the planning and leader-

ship of the program

• Include fair and safe play principles

• Provide either structured or unstructured

opportunities for youth to participate in

physical activity

• Focus on daily activities at home, at

school and/or in your community and

build on what is currently offered by

groups/organizations in the community.

Adopt-a-Highway SpringCleanupThe Port Williams and District Lions Club con-duct their annual Adopt-a-Highway SpringCleanup of Hwy 358 from Greenwich Cornerto the Canard River in April. The Adopt-a-High-way Cleanup began in the village in 1997 bythe Women¹s Institute and continues todayunder the leadership of the Lions Club.

DanceTime at Port WilliamsDanceTime at Port Williams is a social danceclub comprised of people interested in bothStandard and Latin ballroom dancing. Theymeet to dance Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5p.m. at the Port Williams Community Centre,1045 Main Street, Port Williams.

The club has been in existence for 10 years,with membership coming from all over withdifferent levels of dance experience. They are aclub and not a school, but do occasionally haveguest instructors offering workshops, and clubmembers are always willing to share expertise.In addition to their regular practice sessions,they also host several dances throughout theyear: a Christmas and Spring Dance, and someother Theme dances in between.

Launchers AthleticsLaunchers Athletics is a throws club in thesport of track and field. The field events includethe discus, shot put and javelin events. Estab-lished in 2001, the aim of the club is to givespecialized training in throwing events and pro-mote fair play, skill development and to havefun throwing.

With all young athletes, goals are differentwith each person. The club's main goal will beto prepare athletes for several competitive op-portunities: (1) The 2017 Canada SummerGames (2) National Junior and Senior Champi-onships (3) Team Canada Opportunities (4)Provincial Legion team and (5) students whowould like to get ready for the school trackseason.

The club is open to individuals ages 13 and up

Port Williams ParkThe Port Williams Park is located on Hwy 358,adjacent to Centennial Drive. The park was es-tablished in 2010 and was a community effortwith the end goal being a safe and friendlyplace for kids of all ages to gather and play. Inaddition to having plenty of parking, the parkincludes an amazing play structure for children2-12 years. There are FIVE awesome slides,climbers and stepping-stones. The equipmentis rounded out with swings (for babies as well),some stationary pieces and most recently, atire-swing that was donated by a local resident.There is a hard-surface court that is used for

basketball and ball hockey (a local resident do-nated hockey nets!). There is a sun shelterbuilt by local business, Wise Owl Joinery andsponsored by the Port Williams & District LionsClub, as well as a wonderful walking trail thatis lined with trees and benches donated by resi-dents. As of, July 2012 the PW Park is alsohome to StoryWalk an interactive initiativethat combines the benefits of physical activity,time outdoors, literacy, art, community andfamily time. Picnic tables and waste receptaclesare in good supply and there is even a porta-potty! Visit our donor garden and take a see atall those who made this park possible. The PortWilliams Park was built by the community forall to enjoy.

Port Williams VolunteerFire Department Birth-day Party for Sparky theFire DogThe Port Williams Volunteer Fire Departmentwill be holding a party to celebrate the birthdayof Sparky the Fire Dog in March. This OpenHouse will feature a birthday cake, games andan opportunity to examine the fire trucks andfire fighting equipment.

Port Williams PlaygroupThe Port Williams Playgroup runs during theschool year (from September to June) from10:30 a.m. to 12 every Tuesday morning at thePort Williams United Baptist Church. The groupis open to infants up to preschoolers and theircaregivers and there is no charge to attend.The morning is set up with unstructured play-time and snacks for the children and adults!For more information please phone 542-3495or email [email protected].

Port Williams Soccer RegistrationRegistration for soccer for children ages 3-10will be taking place in mid-April at the PortWilliams Elementary School. Any parent willingto coach can speak to a representative at thattime.

Winter FrolicThe Port Williams Recreation Committee willhold its 15th annual Winter Frolic on Sun. Jan.19 at the Port Williams Elementary School from3-5 p.m. After coasting on the hill behind theschool and/or skating at the rink, relax, getwarm and enjoy free hotdogs, hot chocolateand Timbits in the lunchroom. Storm date isJan. 26.

YogaVinyasa yoga classes (all levels) will take placeat the P.W. Community Centre from 7:30-8:30p.m. for an 8 week session starting on Wed.Jan. 15. There is also an 8 week Weekend War-rior session on Sat. from 9-10:30 a.m. startingon Jan. 18. The cost is $85 for 10 classes.Please pre-register (and pre-pay by the end ofthe first class) as the class must have at least 5participants to run. Girls Rock!This afterschool program for girls in grade 7and 8 will be starting up in Spring 2014 whereparticipants will learn the basics of climbing,become confident, strong, flexible, and adven-turous. Sessions will be held at the AdventureClimbing Gym in Greenwich with instructorsBekah Regan and Heather Rebman. StephanieWadden the Recreation Director for Canning &District will be transporting participants via theKings Point to Point Transportation mini busand supporting the sessions each week. Can-ning & District Recreation is able to run thisprogram with the funding provided by theprovincial Thrive! strategy.

Free Open Gym NightsGlooscap Elementary and NKEC will both behosting FREE open gym night starting thisspring on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm.Have you ever wanted to practice shootinghoops or your soccer juggling skills but neverhad the time? Well this is your chance! Youthand their families will have access to the equip-ment and gym space during this time slot untilJune 2014. Annapolis Valley Table Tennis ClubThe Annapolis Valley Table Tennis Club (AVTTC)is open to everyone of all ages. Ladies Climbing NightCalling ladies of all ages and skill levels to cometry rock climbing (bouldering) at Adventure

Adult Co-ed VolleyballEvery Wednesday evening from 7:00pm-9:30pm at Glooscap Elementary gymnasiumthere will be Adult Co-ed Volleyball. This is anon competitive atmosphere and costs $30 forthe year, $15 for half the year, or a $2 drop infee. For more information please contact Brad

Bigelow Nature TrailOfficially opened in September of 2011, theBigelow Nature Trail loops from behind thesoccer field at Northeast Kings Education Cen-tre on Bains Road and winds down throughthe woods to Hwy 221. There are markers des-ignating the local foliage along the path as wellas foot bridges and an outdoor fitness centreat the exit by the football field on J JordanRoad. The trail is open year-round for all footwalkers. Please keep dogs on leash.
