A huge thank you to all those who participated in Club O’Beautiful Day this year. We had a wonderful turn out; it was exciting to see so many young faces (even some non-resident swim team members) helping out. Our new facilities chair, Greg Henderson, did a great, thoughtful job planning the day and we were very happy to see his hard work pay off. On Monday, April 25 we held a Special Meeting at the Clubhouse to vote on restructuring the Club’s membership dues and eliminating the pool user fee. The initiative passed and effective immediately the annual membership dues for the Club are $600. There is no additional fee for use of the pool moving forward. This change will be reflected in the next quarterly bills. Thank you to all of you who attended the meeting and submitted your proxies. Thank you especially to those who have not used the pool and who do not intend to despite the new structure. We recognize you have graciously accepted this increase in dues to help us work toward a sound future for the Club and it is greatly appreciated. Many of the board members intend to donate the funds they had already ear-marked for pool membership this year to the Club to be put toward the tennis courts. We hope that other family members that have joined the pool in the past will consider doing the same. Just think! If each of those 62 households paid the 2015 user fee, it would bring in an additional $8,575. This would put us well on our way, if not ready, to fund the tennis court project. In addition to the dues restructure, we are planning for a busy season at the Clubhouse and need volunteers in several areas. If you have questions about these positions, we are always happy to provide details. Our current needs are: x Clubhouse Grounds Watering Team We keep our grass and plants green throughout the summer through volunteer manpower! FIRST FRIDAY COFFEE’S First Friday Club House Coffees start again in March. Come by

KINGSPOINT WOMEN’S CLUB The Kingspoint Women's Club will have their yearend party on Saturday, April 30th at 6PM at the Kingspoint Clubhouse. Members and their husbands are invited to come and bring hors d'oeuvres to share. Those with last names beginning with the letter "H," please bring desserts to share. Wine, beer and other beverages will be provided. Come and enjoy a lovely spring evening in the company of friends and neighbors. The new officers for the club for the 2016-2017 year are: Alice Lasher and Kim Storms, co-presidents Sherrie Chappell, Treasurer Ann Hobson, Communication Ann Hobson and Alice Lasher Co-presidents, Kingspoint Women's Club KINGSPOINT GARDEN CLUB Well, it appears that Spring has finally arrived. I bought a few black cherry tomato plants to put out in the front yard. Will be getting some

peppers as well now that it appears it is warming up. The garden club will be going to the Norfolk Botanical Garden on May 3. We will meet at 9 am at Olivia Molineaux’s home to go. If this sounds interesting come along. So what to do now in your garden. It is a good time to add seasonal color with frost tolerant annual flowers, such as Sky Blue Lobelia which is heat tolerant as well. This way you don’t have to replace them as you would with pansies. It is also a good idea to prune in early spring for shrubs that flower on new wood. You can remove dead and diseased stems, crisscrossing branches and if needed, reduce the height by about 1/3 so it doesn’t overwhelm your landscape. If you have ornamental grass and perennial foliage from the winter, it is a good time to cut them back before new growth emerges. Spring and Fall and good times to add compost. I also use worm castings that I get from the farmer’s market here in town and the plants love it. This gives everything a good start. If you have a potting area or shed, it is a good time to see what you have and replenish supplies. It is also a good time to clean containers. I will be putting our electric water fountain out soon now that the weather has warmed up. Finally, a word about bees as well as pollinators. Bees are in trouble for a number of reasons, but the main reason is habitat loss. We can help them by planting more food for them. Bees like flowers in blues and yellows, so keep the dandelions in your yard and don’t put chemicals on them. If you want to attract pollinators there are five natives they like – milkweed, aster, goldenrod, salvia and liatris. It can be absolutely delightful to sit in your garden and watch the pollinators enjoying the flowers you have put in your garden for them. Rugosa roses and raspberries also attract them. Butterflies love milkweed, and if you have an oak, willow, cherry or cottonwood you are giving good food for the caterpillars. Herbs, especially dill, parsley and fennel are other

good sources. Usually the caterpillar doesn’t eat the whole plant and it will come back. If you plant more flowers, avoid pesticide use and allow for nesting sites, your garden will be a welcome habitat for pollinators, and the earth will be the better for it. Our Kingspoint Community looks especially beautiful this spring. Neighbors have been hard at work in their yards with spring cleanup and various landscaping projects. Thousands of

Daffodils, Azaleas, Dogwoods and Rhododendrons bloom across the neighborhood. We all benefit in countless ways from a beautiful and well maintained community.

The next several months are forecast to grow hotter than ever. After an unusually warm spring, many of us wonder what summer holds in store. It will be important for us all to work together in keeping grasses and weeds trimmed back and standing water eliminated in order to keep mosquitoes and ticks in check.

More now than just a nuisance, biting insects spread disease, which can impact each of us. Mosquitoes breed very quickly in even a fraction of an inch of water. We all need to empty any container where rain water can collect, which includes saucers under pots, wheelbarrows, yard equipment, old tires, children's toys, and even clogged gutters. We can easily treat water gardens, rain barrels and birdbaths with Mosquito Dunks to prevent the larvae from developing. Keeping grasses and weeds mowed destroys habitat for ticks and shelter for mosquitoes, too.

If you need help with yard work or home maintenance, you'll find neighbors ready to assist. We appreciate those dependable neighbors, advertising their availability each month in the Crier, who can help with home repairs, yard maintenance and construction.

Warmer weather also brings families and children out to walk, ride bikes, and play. Please drive carefully, especially on the cul de sacs, remembering that children and pets can turn up anywhere unexpectedly. Our posted 25 mph speed is often too fast when families are out together in the evenings.

The original founders of The Kingspoint Corporation, Jim and John Marion, Jack Baker and Robert Boyd, devised a series of 'Covenants,' or promises, each homeowner signs when buying property in Kingspoint.

Page 6: Kingspoint Crier - WordPress.com...Kingspoint Crier April 27, 2016 Photo courtesy of Elizabeth McCoy KINGSPOINT CLUB NEWS: Hello! We hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful time of

There are certain things we promise to do, and not to do, on our properties. These covenants were written to protect the neighborhood's integrity and quality of life for everyone.

Our covenants are agreements we make with our neighbors when we buy our property. They follow our deed, and are listed at the back of our 2016 Directory. Though legally enforceable, it is much nicer when all live up to our agreements.

Our covenants are clear that no sign is to be displayed on any lot, except one posted by the builder advertising a home for sale, or by the owner advertising a home for sale or rent, or a small sign giving the owner's family name. This means that signs advertising a contractor, or a resident's political preferences, or a special event should not be displayed on any property. You will find this explained in Covenant 4 of your 2016 Neighborhood Directory.

Although contractors appreciate the free advertising they get from posting their signs in our yards, those signs violate our covenants. Our neighbors don't want to see them. We need to respect one another by declining to allow signs to be posted in our neighborhood.

We all greatly appreciate the efforts of Steve Houff, Benson Dexter, Tom Mahone and Chris Bonday as they work together to keep our Kingspoint entrance beautiful. We also appreciate those neighbors who pick up any trash they see while out walking each day.

We want to welcome all new families as they move into Kingspoint and include their contact information in our neighborhood Directory. Please contact our editor, Peggy Manning, with any additions or revisions at 784-0142.

This month, please add to your directory:

Parents may want to bring their children to the JCC Police's Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 7 at Hornsby Middle School from 9:00-11:00 AM. This is part of Bike Safety Month, and is planned to help teach important principles of bike safety in addition to letting young riders test their skills in various events. Officers will be on hand to register ownership of bicycles, to help in recovering the bike should it be lost or stolen. Contact MPO Kelly Connors for more details at 603-6023. The 'No Soliciting' sign at our community entrance should stop vendors from coming to your door. Anyone selling door to door must have a license obtained from county police and a business license. Please call 911 when a stranger at your door makes you feel uncomfortable. The police can check out their credentials to insure they are legitimate, and may save you or neighbors from a scam or burglary.

Occasionally, gunshots have been heard by several neighbors over the past few months. These sometimes occur in the evening or early morning hours. We may be hearing hunters on College Creek. Some of our zone leaders reported shots to the police earlier this month, and officers investigated. Our JCC police request that anyone hearing gun shots call it in immediately, even if you can't tell exactly where the shot was fired. Police patrols in the neighborhood will continue to monitor this.

Our James City County Ordinance Sec. 15-36. states:

"It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge any firearms or pneumatic gun in the county in or within 300 feet of any dwelling, commercial building or shelter for animals, except with the prior written permission of owner or tenant, in or within 50 feet of the boundaries of any recorded subdivision, or in a manner which causes ammunition to cross such areas. "

This ordinance includes pellets, BBs and paintballs as well as traditional ammunition.

Clubhouse Entrance Patio Bricks The past few years we have

welcomed many new families to the Kingspoint community. These families may not have thought about or known how to order a brick for the Clubhouse entrance. When we built the Clubhouse we conducted a “Fundraiser” that generated money to furnish the clubhouse. At that time we offered bricks with personal messages, and benches, trees, etc. and raised over $20,000! This time we are ordering only bricks. Personal messages have honored families, children, grandchildren, neighbors, former residents, individuals, who have passed on, and pets. For many of us it has served as a way to remember all the wonderful neighbors who make Kingspoint what it is. This is also a way to show your pride in your swimmers! Ordering a brick is very simple and easy. We charge $100.00 for a “STANDARD” brick (4”x8”) which allows 15 characters per line (including spaces) and 4 lines of text. (Call me if you want a larger brick, 8”x 8”.)

1. Check out bricks in the patio to get an idea for your brick.

2. Give me a call and I will help you with the wording. (The website where I order has a “brick creator” where I can make a digital brick and email it to you.) This is a very simple process that allows you to see what you are getting.

3. Send a check made out to me, Robert Hanny, for $100.00. I will order your brick, pay for it and when your brick arrives I will cash your check and send the balance, usually $60.00 to the club, (less my expense which includes the brick and shipping). A standard brick usually costs $40.00 depending on how many bricks are in an order.

4. Bricks are usually shipped and received in 3-4 weeks. Weather permitting, I then install the brick.

FACEBOOK PAGE Kingspoint neighborhood has its own Facebook Page to add info, photos, items for sale, invite neighbors to a last minute movie or bbq, post last minute updates for swim meets, cancellations, etc. This Page is a "Closed Group", which means you have to "request" to be added to the Page (this prevents just anyone from joining the group and posting spam). But all residents are encouraged to request an invite! Here is how you do this: Type in the following URL address https://www.facebook.com/groups/2118520156 32122/ . It will say it's a closed group, and then in the upper right corner, under the photo, you click on ‘JOIN GROUP’. The Admin for the group will approve all KP residents! Please feel free to post "hello's", add photos, etc. BOOK CLUB Book worms wanted! This group meets every other month and meets in the evening. We've had some great discussion (and food)! To be added to the list, please contact Yvette Mardis at [email protected] . Crier Delivery and Notes f/m the Editor: Many thanks to Ray Lee who prints the copies for those who do not take the electronic version. If your neighbor mentions that they are not receiving their electronic version of the Crier, please have them email me @ [email protected] as their email address may have changed, and I have not been notified.- Thank you.
