Epiphany's Journey Wait and watch and wander.

Plod and pitch and ponder.

Journey out toward where we'll know --

Wherever that might be.

Pray to be known by God

As you traverse the desert emptiness

Partnered with mystery.

Drink hope and sip the day

Until, as Rumi wrote,

We are drunk with the wine the Magi drank

On their road from Persia to Bethlehem.

Until we overflow with the emptiness of the desert vigil

That leaves our stomachs aching for a morsel and

Our parched lips cracking for a drop --

Our hearts skipping a beat uncertain and joyful.

Pour yourself out as the Magi did.

Pour and drink,

Sip and spill

Until we room ourselves

Into a space

Not to be found at the inn,

But in our souls

Wombing and wondering

For the one we seek

Human in us

Yet wholly God. gjb+

Celtic Service at Kingston Parish Chapel

Plan to join us for our next Celtic Eucharist on Sunday, January 13th at 5:30 p.m. This candlelight service in-vites you to enter a place of meditative silence, prayer and reflection. Steeped in tradition, this service will include Celtic music performed by the musical duo, Spencer and Beane. Enjoy the beauty of the violin, vio-la and tin whistle as you rest in the stillness of this sa-cred space. All present will have the opportunity to light candles as a symbolic reminder of their prayers. We invite you to bring family and friends to this con-templative evening worship. People of all faiths are welcome. Children old enough to enjoy the experience of stillness and quiet are encouraged to attend.

Transportation Needed

The Lay Visitors coordinate rides for people in our church needing transportation to doctor appointments, treatments and other reasons. If you need transportation or if we can call on you to help provide transportation, please contact the office, 804-725-2175 or contact Kip-py Gilbert, 725-5074.

Fr. Gary presented Peggy Hudgins with this hooked wall hanging made by Juli Dayton at the 8:00 service for 30 years running the Social Services Christmas Store at Kingston Parish.

Wabingston Does Epiphany

January 6, the day the Eastern half of Christiani-ty celebrates Christmas, is the feast of the Epiphany and the day we remember the wise men from Persia bringing their three special gifts to the poor child in a Bethlehem stall who will be called Christ/Messiah.

In addition to our regular morning services on Sunday, January 6, we will gather with our Ab-ingdon and Ware brothers and sisters here at Kingston Chapel at 5 PM to celebrate the wise ones and the real gift, which is the baby in the manger, together.

After the service, we will step outside (weather permitting) and have a bonfire of all the Christ-mas greens from the parishes (bring yours if you like). Then we will return inside for some warm soup and fellowship. We will need 7 people to prepare soup and 7 people to bring bread. Please call the office if you can provide either (725-2175). Drinks will be provided by the parish. Spread the word and invite your friends!

Growing closer to God and Growing Old: The Vocation of Aging

When God asks: "Whom shall I send?", the answer of the faithful again and again is: "Here I am, send me!"

Well, day by day we are all getting older. Have you noticed? How do we not only add days and years, but grow into Christ even as the challenges of aging creep up on us? We often think of "vocation" and God's "calling us" as being issues especially for the young adult seeking a job or career. Moses, Abraham and Sarah, Elizabeth and Zechariah, and many other people in the retirement years of their lives are called to new things in Scripture. The truth is that in Scrip-ture and in experience, each of us is always being called to new things in life, into ways of being and doing that bring us more deeply into God's love and the Kingdom of Justice that is, as Jesus tells us, very near at hand. For the season of Epiphany, our adult class will use the prophetic writings in the book of Isaiah and our own experiences of growing older to discover what God is calling each of us and all of us together to do. There is no age limit to this class! Come as you are and when you can.

This session, we will offer this class two different times each week, one in the daytime and one at night. The day class will begin Monday, January 7, 1 pm to 2:30. The evening class will begin Tuesday, January 8, 7 pm to 8:30. You are welcome at whichever works for your schedule and there is no reason why you can't go back and forth between them should that suit your schedule. Questions can be directed to Gary+.

Annual Meeting January 27

We will have our Annual Meeting on Sunday, Janu-ary 27th following our morning 10:30 service at Kingston Chapel. Reports will be given from the rec-tor, the Senior Warden and the Junior Warden. Dur-ing the meeting we will elect three new vestry mem-bers for a three year term. The three vestry members finishing their terms, Mary Ann Carr, John Lee Ma-chen and Tom Reed, make up the Nominating Com-mittee.

If you are a vestry or committee leader and would like to include a report in the yearbook, please email to the office by January 22: [email protected].

After the meeting we will enjoy a simple luncheon. You will hear more from Jackie Ingram if any food assistance is needed. Please come join us for this im-portant day in the life of our parish.

Vestry Notes From the December 10, 2018 Meeting

Richard Jones and Justin Powell were ap-proved to replace Jay Black and Morris Bus-by on the Endowment Committee.

Dead and dangerous trees have been re-moved at Christ Church.

Trinity Church is being inspected to deter-mine the cost of preparing it for use.

The Baptized For Life group had their sec-ond workshop and discussed results from the online survey taken by parishioners.

A Wabingston Epiphany service will be held at Kingston Chapel January 6th at 5 PM fol-lowed by a bonfire and supper.

Our next Celtic Service is January 13th at 5:30 PM in Kingston Chapel.

Our Annual Meeting is January 27th. Re-ports for the yearbook are needed by January 22nd.

The Nominating Committee is actively seek-ing vestry candidates for 2019.

Rachel Morris is looking for more pictures of Kingston events to put online.

More people are needed to sign up for the breakfast following the 10:30 service; hope-fully lighter fare.

71% of anticipated pledges and 94% of the 2018 annual budget have been received.

We will invite recipients of our Fall Fair out-reach fund to a special service March 31st.

Christ Church Flower Calendar 2019

Mairi Furniss schedules memorial flowers for Christ Church. Flowers are on the altar each week except for Lent and Advent. Many weeks have been chosen by parishioners but a few re-main open.

If you have scheduled flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one in the past, please check with Mairi, by phone or by email, to verify the date for 2019.

If you have never scheduled flowers before and would like to do so, please contact Mairi as well. She will explain the process with you and help you select a date.

Poinsettias Poinsettias will grace both of our worship spaces through the Sunday of Epiphany, January 6th. They can then be taken home.

Baptized For Life

Our work with the Baptized for Life people at Virginia Seminary and the Forward Movement (Forward Day by Day) continues. We have a wonderful team meeting regularly in workshop to digest materials and discuss our survey materials from the survey you all took back in the early Fall. Below is a letter from our Episcopal Church contact with the program, Chris Decatur. We are hoping to be on track to finish our workshops by late January when we have our Parish Annual Meeting so that we can share with you where we are in the process and what we have discussed and discovered about our journey with God. As Chris mentions in his letter, we will be listening for God to help us find the ways our parish can work with the other two Wabingston parishes to strengthen our life in Christ. The possibilities for new life and growth are exciting!

Keep watch!

Endowment Committee Report

The Kingston Parish Endowment Fund Com-mittee held its final meeting of the year on Wednesday, December 5th at the Parish House. A report from Treasurer Tom Reed re-garding remaining spendable distribution bal-ances from endowment generated a healthy conversation about needs and priorities; the committee endorsed the transfer of certain amounts prior to year's end, both in acknowl-edgement of current needs, and in anticipation of future needs. (As has been our policy, this committee encourages and supports the limited distribution of monies from the endowment funds.) In other business, the committee en-dorsed Richard Jones and Justin Powell to fill seats being vacated by Morris Busby and Jay Black, respectively, and will ask the Vestry for its consideration of these prospective new members, as well as reappointing Vicki Carter to her first full three-year term.

On a personal note, the Chair wishes to acknowledge and thank all of his committee members, past and present, for their support and encouragement during his six years on the committee, the past four as Chairman in partic-ular. Your experience, insight and tempera-ment have been invaluable, and your dedica-tion to this Parish and the wishes of her bene-factors have been an inspiration.

Respectfully, John A. Black, III, Chair Kingston Parish Endowment Fund Committee
