EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 2

Rio sedan joins hatch as latest offeringardly a sea-son goes by without Kia adding a new vehicle.

In the fall it was the Rio fi ve-door hatch and here it is winter we have the 2012 Rio four-door sedan.

Once just another cheap and cheerful Asian econocar brand, Kia has blossomed with standout styling coupled with leading edge engineering and technology.

Canadians have responded to this. In 2011, Kia Canada sold more than 65,000 units for the fi rst time ever for a sales increase of 20.9 per cent while the Canadian auto industry as a whole grew just 1.8 per cent.

The 2012 Rio Sedan (or Rio4) is offered in fi ve trims with starting prices begin-ning respectively with the LX ($13,795), LX+ ($15,295), EX ($16,695) EX+ ($17,165) and EX Luxury ($20,495). This does not include a $1,455 ship-ping fee.

Driving the front wheels is a 1.6-litre gasoline direct injec-tion (GDI) inline four-cylinder engine with a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Achieving what is claimed a class-leading 138 hp (123 lb/ft of torque) it has a fuel rat-ing of 6.6/4.9L/100 km city/highway for the manual and 6.8/4.9L/100 km city/high-way for the automatic. That highway fi gure translates to 58 mpg.

An additional gas saving

technology item on the Rio se-dan with automatic transmis-sion is the Active ECO system. Turned off and on by a button to the left of the steering wheel, when activated, it optimizes the engine and transmission for best fuel economy.

Like the Rio hatch, the se-dan was conceived in Kia’s design studios in Irvine, Calif., having a very European look to it. That’s not surprising, as one of Kia’s major markets is Europe.

I remarked in the fall how the Rio Hatchback looked very Golf-ish especially with the 17-in wheels on the EX Luxury model.

Heightening that is the fact the sedan has been lowered 15 and the front overhang was shortened by 25 mm compared to the hatch to give it an even more sporting look.

Adding to a more premium styling are outside mirrors fi t-ted to the doors. Not only do these lessen wind noise, out-ward vision is improved be-cause you can see through the gap between the mirror and the A-pillar.

The Rio sedan, again like the hatch, rides on an all-new platform that is longer, wider and lower than the previous generation.

Suspension at the front is MacPherson struts, coil springs and a stabilizer bar with a tor-sion beam axle suspension in the rear.

The Rio’s chassis features a high-strength steel structure that includes an innovative

“Halo Body” construction designed to help protect oc-cupants in certain side impact and rollover collisions.

Standard safety features include six airbags (dual ad-vanced front and front-seat mounted side as well as full-length side curtain), side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners, three-point seatbelts for all seating po-

sitions and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH).

Also standard on all Rio trims for increased driver and passenger safety are Electronic Stability Control (ESC), four-wheel disc brake with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), which coordinates the car’s ESC and

ABS to help the driver stay in control of the vehicle.

The base LX includes as standard body-colour door handles and sideview mirrors and 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65R15 tires, power win-dows and door locks, driver’s seat height adjuster, map lights, illuminated vanity mirrors, trip computer, sliding centre con-sole armrest and 60/40 split folding rear seats.

For some reason I didn’t quite understand at the press launch in Phoenix, the UVO infotainment system is only offered on one model, the EX UVO, not three or four as in the Rio hatch. Developed with Microsoft, it is the second gen-eration of the system originally made for Ford.

What I did drive was the EX Luxury Navi with the same infotainment system. It was quick and easy to use re-quiring no mandatory reading of the manual before setting off. As a matter of fact, my usual co-driver was plugging in destinations on the fl y.

The big thing was the sys-tem not only gave prompts far in advance of turn off, but it was accurate, something other systems I’ve tried have failed to be.

The 2012 Rio sedan comes equipped with low-resistance silica tires to help save on fuel.

Up in the high dessert there was a lot of sand blow-ing across the roads. So, silica in the tires and sand on the road resulted in a hint of

sliding cornering.That won’t be a problem

here but in winter conditions with slush, ice and sand, it will probably be best to run four snow tires.

The interior of the sedan is identical to the hatch with a three-pot centre instrument cluster. The seats are broad and supportive and, if you move to the trim ladders, there are two-tone treatments and even leather on the Lux models.

Trunk space is adequate at 385 litres and there is a pass-through for the 60/40 rear folding seats.

Also adequate is the pow-er. With every current engine technology going for it, 138 hp is pretty good but it fell off in the mountains east of Phoenix as any other car would, due to the altitude and sparser oxygen.

But helping out was the Sportshift six-speed automat-ic. With its sequential manual shift mode, holding the Rio in a lower gear on a steep climb is a blessing.

Driving back to our hotel in Phoenix, we found our-selves in the middle lane of a three-land highway with a Toyota Yaris on the left and a Nissan Versa on the right.

My usual co-driver looked over and asked, “which would rather have?”

And that’s a very good question you might want to ask yourself if you’re in the market for a sub-compact se-dan.

The 2012 Kia Rio four-door sedan (EX LUX Navi shown) is offered in fi ve levels of trim including one with stop/start technology, a fi rst in the sub-compact segment.

EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 4

HOW TO CONDUCT A TEST DRIVE WHEN BUYING

sed cars can be quite a bargain. Whether pur-chased from a dealer, pri-

vate citizen or even a fam-ily member, a used or pr-eowned vehicle can prove just as reliable as a new vehicle but at a fraction of the cost.

While plenty of people have had good experiences purchasing a used vehi-cle, consumers know that a used car is never a sure bet. However, shoppers can employ the following tips to learn as much about a used vehicle as possible be-fore any money exchanges hands.

* Ask for a vehicle histo-ry report. A vehicle history report can show potential buyers how many owners a vehicle has had as well as the vehicle’s accident his-tory. A vehicle with several previous owners and an ex-tensive accident history is one many consumers would

prefer to avoid. Consider it a red flag if a seller, be it a dealership or private seller, does not want to share the vehicle history report. For a nominal fee, the Depart-ment of Justice’s National Motor Vehicle Title Infor-mation System (www.nm-vtis.org) provides informa-tion about a vehicle’s title, its odometer data and cer-tain aspects of its accident history.

* Test drive the car un-der as many conditions as possible. When test driving a used car, try to drive it in as many conditions as pos-sible. Test the vehicle on hills, in stop-and-go traffic and test how the vehicle responds to accelerated speeds on the freeway.

* Have the vehicle in-spected by your own me-chanic. Once the vehicle changes ownership, it will need to pass inspection be-fore you can legally drive it. However, many used cars are purchased as-is, meaning you won’t be pro-

tected if the vehicle fails inspection after you have paid for the car. As a result, it’s important to have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic before any money changes hands. The mechanic can point out any issues with the vehicle and give his recommendation as to whether it’s worth buying.

* Research the model of vehicle. Before buying a used vehicle, it also helps to research the specific model. Some models have better reputations for lon-gevity than others. Such research won’t necessarily be easy, but auto-related consumer magazines typi-cally produce stories ex-amining the frequency of repair and maintenance costs with specific mod-els.

Buying a used car re-quires a leap of faith, but a few tricks of the trade can make consumers much more confident that they will find the right vehicle.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE BUYING A USED CAR

Uhen shop-ping for a new vehicle, some drivers know exactly which model

of car they want to buy, while others are not so sure. Though price and features often carry the most weight when mak-ing a decision, a test drive can narrow down the prospects as well.

It is easy to become awe-struck by the look of a new car, and even easier to fall into the eager hands of a salesperson. It can be confusing when com-paring the dozens of statistics and numbers associated with a car -- from price to horsepower to gas usage ratios. One of the best ways to judge a car is to take it out for a test drive.

There are many things that a test drive can tell you about a car or truck. A test drive shouldn’t be a quick jaunt around the block. It should in-clude a thorough examination of the vehicle, and the drive should be long enough for you to get a feel for the vehicle.

It is important to take your time on a test drive and not feel rushed. There are also many other tips that can help you fi nd the right buy.

* Pick a time when you feel focused. Doing a test drive on your lunch hour or right before you’re expected at a meeting

or carpool is not the ideal time to make an assessment of the vehicle. You certainly may feel rushed and distracted by the other tasks you have to accom-plish. Rather, pick a time when you are well rested and well fed and able to concentrate on the job at hand.

* Avoid distractions. Some-times schedules confl ict, and you may have to bring other people, including children, along on the test drive. How-ever, when possible, only in-clude those people who will be driving the vehicle in the test drive. This way you will be able to focus solely on the car and not worry about what the other passengers are doing as well. It is also perfectly ac-ceptable to ask the salesperson to be quiet during the test drive and reserve explaining the fea-tures and attributes for before or after the drive. This way you can focus on the driving experience.

* Research the vehicle. It helps to go into a test drive already knowing the majority of the specifi cations on the ve-hicle and what the car or truck is capable of doing. This way you’ll be able to tell if the sales information you are receiving is accurate or embellished.

* Try out different terrains. Most test drives consist of a short jaunt to and from the dealership. Salespeople also

may recommend certain routes, but these could be tailored to get the best response out of the car. But if you’re familiar with the area take a test drive on your terms. Try different road surfaces and speeds. Also be sure to make turns to gauge the turning radius. This can be as simple as making some turns in a parking lot.

* Change lanes. Take the opportunity to change lanes so you can judge the visibility of the vehicle.

* Adjust the seating. This will help you determine the comfort level of the vehicle and if it will fi t your frame. You don’t want the car to be uncomfortable to drive.

* Test the radio and the cli-mate control. See how the car functions, including whether it takes a long or short time to reach a comfortable tempera-ture.

* Have a passenger ride in the back. If you won’t be dis-tracted by it, have a friend or family member ride along and pay attention to the things you might be missing while focus-ing on the road. These may include road noise, suspension and the general comfort of the vehicle.

A test drive is an important component of buying a car. It can often make or break a sale, so be sure to include it on your must-do list.

EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 5

he all-new Volkswagen Golf was re-cently unveiled in Berlin, 36 years after the

original model redefi ned the small family car.

The seventh generation Golf builds on the success of its prede-cessors, of which over 29 million have been sold, bringing new lev-els of comfort, practicality, safety and effi ciency to the class.

Despite offering more room for passengers and more ad-vanced technological features than ever before, new produc-tion techniques contribute to the Mk VII Golf being up to 100 kg

lighter than the car it replaces, helping to make it up to 23 per cent more effi cient than before.

On top of this, the new Golf is also safer than ever, thanks not just to a stronger body structure (which is also 23 kg lighter) but also to a raft of standard and op-tional passive and active safety systems.

The new Golf is built on the so-called MQB (Modu-larer Querbaukasten) platform or Modular Transverse Matrix. This standardizes many vehicle component parameters across brands and vehicle classes, and allows access to new powertrains and technologies, including in-novations in the areas of safety

and infotainment, which until now were reserved for vehicles in higher segments.

Though the new car’s dimen-sions are larger, its overall design is unmistakably that of a Golf, thanks to a design DNA that has evolved through the decades.

Inside the Golf there is more room than ever. Rear legroom is improved by 15 mm, and the front seats have been moved 20 mm further back, benefi tting taller drivers.

Front shoulder room is im-proved by 31 mm to 1,420 mm (at the rear it is 30 mm wider) and elbowroom by 22 mm to 1,469 mm (20 mm wider at the rear).

SEVENTH GENERATION VW GOLF BREAKS COVER IN BERLINThe seventh generation VW Golf is larger but lighter and the safest Golf ever built.T

EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 6

new crop of teenagers is ready to take to the roads with their newly

minted drivers’ licenses. Most teenagers are anxious to get behind the wheel be-cause having a license and access to a car means free-dom they may not have had before. However, parents and guardians may be wor-ried about these teens on the road because they lack the practice and experience of more advanced drivers. Continuing to educate young drivers about safety can help reduce the risk of accident.

Traffi c accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. The National High-way Traffi c Safety Adminis-tration reports that vehicular accidents account for 35 per-cent of all fatalities among people 15 to 20 years old.

What puts teens particu-larly at risk is the tendency of many young drivers to engage in reckless behavior and/or distracted driving. It is often up to parents to re-inforce the rules of the road and also consistently work with their children so that the teens can become better drivers.

* Practice safer driv-ing. As with any activity, practice helps hone skills and teaches people through their own mistakes. Driving is no exception. Mistakes on the road can be serious; therefore, it is best for teen drivers to practice driving in areas that are not heavily populated or full of traffic. Parents may want to estab-lish rules that the teen is not able to drive solo until he or she passes the requirements set forth by Mom or Dad. Parents can routinely ride around with their teen chil-dren to gauge how progress is coming along.

* Get the facts. Talk to teens about road risks and how to stay safe. Research the laws and statistics per-taining to teenage drivers and share that information. It may not always be well

received, but there’s a good chance that some of the message will get through.

* Set a good example. According to a 2007 study from Students Against De-structive Decisions, the biggest influence on how teens drive is their parents. Almost two-thirds of high school teens say their par-ents talk on a cell phone while driving, almost half say their parents speed and almost one-third say their parents don’t wear a safe-ty belt. Parents should be mindful of their own behav-iors when driving and the impression those behaviors are making on youngsters.

* Establish rules. Dis-tracted driving is claiming more and more lives each year. Many accidents are as the result of texting while driving. According to Dis-traction.org, in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in mo-tor vehicle crashes involv-

ing a distracted driver. Text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted. Also, research has found that sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equiva-lent -- at 55 mph -- of driv-ing the length of an entire football field blind. Parents can implement rules, such as that cell phones are not allowed to be on while in the car or the phone should be stored in the back seat or trunk while a teen is driv-ing. Parents also may want to set rules that multiple passengers (friends) are not allowed to ride in the car until the teen is more accus-tomed to driving.

Driving is an activity that offers freedom and mobil-ity. It is also one that places a very large and potentially destructive piece of ma-chinery into the hands of a driver. Education should be ongoing as teens learn to drive.

HOW TO HELP TEENAGERS BECOME BETTER DRIVERS

NEW HYUNDAI HOCKEY HELPERS PROGRAM LAUNCHES A

yundai Can-ada has an-nounced the launch of Hyun-dai Hockey

Helpers, a new initiative de-signed to reinvest in communities across the country and im-prove the lives of deserving children by helping at least 1,000 under-re-sourced Canadian youth play hockey.

In partnership with KidSport Can-ada, a not-for-prof-it organization that provides financial assistance to kids ages 18 and under, the program pro-vides grants for registration fees and equipment costs in order to lower the finan-cial barriers that prevent youth from participating in organized sports.

To help raise awareness, Hyundai Hockey Helpers is teaming up with program ambassadors who hold a

personal connection to the cause.

The Subban family, led by Karl Subban, father of Montreal Canadiens star, P.K. Subban, and recent first-round Boston Bruins

draft pick, Malcolm Sub-

ban, are giving back to the next generation by help-ing kids get in the game.

Unfortunately, many Canadian youth don’t have the chance. In fact, profes-

sional players like P.K. and Malcolm Subban struggled to play organized hock-ey growing up due to the high cost of registration and equipment fees. Karl worked multiple jobs and spent his nights taking his

sons to practice their hockey skills at a public arena in downtown To-ronto.

The program administration and grants for the first 1,000 recipi-ents of Hyundai Hockey Helpers is the result of contri-butions by all 205 Hyundai dealers as well as Hyundai Auto Canada Corp.

Further, 100 per cent of every addi-tional dollar donated by the public toward the program goes dir-ectly to KidSport to help one more kid get in the game.

To learn more about Hyundai Hockey Helpers and how you can make a dif-ference or apply for a grant, visit HyundaiHockey.ca.

EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 7

AROUND THE CORNER, OR AROUND THE GLOBEew for 2012, the Kawa-saki Versys 1000 enters the market as the long-

awaited big brother of the Versys 650.

This latest addition to the lineup comes well loaded with user-friendly ergonom-ics, modern instrumentation, an adjustable windscreen, standard ABS braking, two power modes, three traction control settings and available touring accessories.

Harnessing litre-bike power, the Versys 1000 prom-ises “riding enjoyment in the widest variety of street riding situations – solo or two-up, around the corner or around the globe” according to com-pany bumpf.

Note the emphasis on “street riding” above. One look may bring BMW’s GS to mind - the tall stance and ad-venture/tour styling - but Ka-wasaki Canada makes no pre-tensions of offroad prowess, slotting the bike fi rmly into the street/touring category, unlike other more ambitious markets, take Britain for ex-ample, where the bike is listed as a dual-purpose offering.

Actually, the Versys 1000 is more closely related to the Z1000 “super naked” street machine, mechanically at least. It shares the same sport-derived inline four-cylinder engine retuned for lower- and mid-range torque, and the same braking equipment along with other infl uences.

If I can make a four-wheel segue, it kind of reminds me of the SUV boom in the ‘90s when manufacturers realized that drivers’ offroad affecta-tions seldom refl ected actual ventures off the pavement.

Not that I’m saying the Versys 1000 is more about style than substance. It’s just a different kind of substance.

And all you have to do to fi nd that out is to start this ma-chine up and go.

The Versys shows its sportbike cojones immediate-ly, hustling forth with a howl of power, accelerating up to highway speed in no time with a light snicking through the gears.

There’s enough engine here for any situation but the Versys 1000 will sail quietly and sedately on the freeway, spooling at around 4500 rpm, less than halfway up to a lofty 10,000 rpm redline.

That just-suffi cient rate of engine spin, combined with ample one-litre torque, allows a rider to cruise country high-ways in sixth gear, slow to 50 km/h through town, and accel-erate back up to speed without ever touching the shifter.

On my fi rst tank, I rode until the fuel gauge ran down to one bar at 270 km, then hunted for a gas pump and added 15.3L of fuel at 290 km. By the end of the test, my combined fuel economy averaged out even better to 5.2L/100km, for a theoretical range of just over 400 km on the 21-litre tank of gas.

The tall seating (same seat height as Versys 650) is no problem for the long-inseam crowd and it provides a nice high vantage point in traffi c

and on touring treks. And the adjustable suspension offers relatively long wheel travel (150 mm front and back) to smooth the roughest roads.

The Versys 1000’s ergo-nomic triangle - from grips to bars to pegs – allows for a re-laxed and upright seating po-sition. The footpegs are lower and further forward than the pegs of the Z1000.

The seat itself is comfort-able, padded with twice as much foam as the Z1000. The grab bars and rear carrier offer plenty of tie down points for bungeeing extra gear. And, for longer hauls, 34-litre hardshell bags and a 47-litre topcase are available, the complete kit adding up to about $1,800 including mounting hardware and colour-matching trim.

Facing forward, the rider’s view takes in wide handlebars and a windshield that adjusts quickly and easily (30 mm or 1.2 in) via two knobs in front. The cockpit styling comple-ments the bike’s utilitarian, angular design – the multi-angled windscreen, the funky fi ve-sided mirrors.

The only circular element seems to be the classic, round-gauged analogue tachometer mated to a square multi-func-tion LCD screen that displays speed, fuel gauge, odometer, clock, dual tripmeters, instant and average fuel consump-tion, DTE range and air tem-perature. In a perfect world, I’d wish for a gear selection indicator, as well.

There is a little ECO in-dicator that pops up on the screen when you’re riding economically. Although, ac-cording to the brochure, in or-der for it to appear “the rider must ride in a gentle manner – less than 6,000 rpm, less than 30 percent throttle, under 160 km/h.”

In other words, if you don’t see much of the ECO indica-tor, man, you are having way

too much fun.At the rider’s left thumb, a

selection rocker and set button allows you to control that fun level according to road and traction conditions, scroll-ing through choices of two power modes - full power & low power (about 75 percent of full) along with the three-mode KTRC system (Kawa-saki TRaction Control).

Consider the included ABS, power and traction con-trol and the 2012 Versys 1000 seems very reasonably priced at $13,499 (recently cut $500 by Kawasaki’s Mega Cash promotion).

That about $6K cheaper than the BMW GS that we, umm, actually decided to not compare it to. Competitors closer in price and intent (al-though with varying engine styles and equipment levels) would include Yamaha’s Su-per Tenere ($16,499), Suzu-ki’s V-Strom 1000 ($11,499) and Honda’s CBF1000A ($12,249).

Kawasaki Canada jumped on the Versys 1000 before their American counterparts (as they did with the Ver-sys 650) because they felt it matched up better with our riders and terrain.

The Versys 1000 comes only in Metallic Magnesium Gray in Canada, a colour that seems to shift in tone from gray, to bronze, to brown, de-pending on the light refl ect-ing off the metal fl ake. It’s a handsome, yet subtle colour that matches well with the industrial functionality and almost military fl avour of this motorcycle.

If you’re on the hunt for adventure touring fla-vour and utility in a well-equipped motorcycle with a unique style and the heart, soul and strengths of a sportbike, the 2012 Ka-wasaki Versys 1000 is well worth checking out.

N

The Kawasaki Versys 1000 is new for 2012 and the long-awaited big brother to the Versys 650. EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 9

uch like curb appeal im-proving the chances of a sale on your home, hav-

ing a car that is presented well inside and out may boost the amount of money and poten-tial of a resale on your vehi-cle. Even vehicle owners who don’t anticipate selling their vehicles in the near future should maintain the vehicles to ensure they are safe and sound.

After home and work, a car is where many people spend most of their time. As a result, a vehicle can easily become soiled, scratched or overrun with clutter. Maintaining the interior of your vehicle need not take much time or effort, but it should be done often enough to keep on top of the mess. Here’s how to start.

Remove ClutterThe fi rst step in cleaning

the interior is to remove the excess items that may have accumulated in the car. Busy families tend to leave toys, books or clothing in their vehicles. There also may be discarded food wrappers or beverage containers. People who commute also may ac-cumulate a number of items in their cars, including busi-ness materials. These items should be sorted through and put where they belong before tackling the rest of the clean-ing work.

VacuumMuch of the dirt and debris

that accumulates in vehicles can easily be removed with a

vacuum. A shop vac will have enough power to thoroughly clean upholstery and mats. If you do not have one, visit a self car wash.

Remove the fl oor mats and set them on a fl at surface. Thoroughly vacuum the mats to clear them of dust, dirt, food crumbs, and any other debris. Vacuum the fl oor of the car as well as any seat upholstery that may be a catch-all for crumbs. Using a soft-bristled vacuum attachment, you also can remove dust from the vents, speakers and the center console of your vehicle .

Spot cleaningSpills and stains do oc-

cur in vehicles, just as they do elsewhere. Cleaning these stains may require a little el-bow grease and a cleansing agent. Most automotive sup-ply stores will sell an uphol-stery cleaner designed for car interiors. You also can use a mixture of laundry deter-gent and water applied with a slightly damp rag or sponge. Go over each area that is soiled so you can devote ad-equate time to each stain. The same process can be used on the vehicle’s carpeting. Use a brush to really clean heavily soiled areas.

Leather upholstery can be more delicate than cloth upholstery. When cleaning a leather interior, use only prod-ucts that are designed specifi -cally for leather so as to avoid damaging the interior.

Console and dashboard detailing

A barely moist cloth can be used to clean the plastic com-

ponents of the dashboard and consoles of the vehicle. The goal is to wipe away any dust and any minor stains or sticky areas without saturating im-portant electrical components. It is always better to spray polish or cleaning agents on your cloth than directly on the dashboard. In hard-to-reach-areas, consider using a soft-bristled paintbrush or cotton swabs to clean in crevices. Wipe down everything with a dry cloth or towel afterward.

WindowsHaving clean windows is

essential to driving safely. Cleaning the windshield and windows is relatively simple to do with a glass cleaner spray and a lint-free cloth. Use caution when cleaning the rear windshield if it has a defogger/defroster grid on the window. These wires can be damaged easily. Clean with the direction of the defroster grid lines.

Freshen the carPlace an air freshener or

spray a product on the air intake vent to eradicate musty smells in the car. It also is important to replace the cabin air fi lter peri-odically, otherwise you could be breathing in dust and dander that is trapped in the fi lter.

These are the basic steps to cleaning a car’s interior. Other detail work can be done depending on your pref-erences and the make of the car. Routine maintenance helps others see you have pride in your vehicle and can ensure a better return on your investment down the line if you choose to sell.

M

SIMPLE STEPS TO A CLEAN INTERIOR

il changes are probably the most common of automotive services – performed so

frequently that consumers may often pass up the opportunity to get more for their service dollar.

With automakers trying to gain increased effi ciency, the “ordinary” oil change is be-coming more comprehensive. Not only are companies recom-mending synthetic motor oil, but many automakers are develop-ing their own oil specifi cations.

“The best way for consum-ers to ensure that they’re getting optimal protection and using a product that meets factory specs is to ask a few questions to their service provider,” says Jay Buckley, an ASE-certifi ed mas-ter mechanic and technical train-ing manager at Fram Group.

Doing your homework by reading the owner’s manual is always a plus, he notes, but sim-ply knowing what to ask will go a long way. Here are Buckley’s

recommendations:

Ask what’s included in the service

Many dealers and service stations bundle several differ-ent inspections in with the oil change. It’s a great time for a mechanic to inspect brakes, hoses and undercar compo-nents to help stop a small prob-lem from becoming a big and expensive one. In most cases, these additional inspections are a bargain.

Ask if the right specifi -cation of motor oil is being used

Oil-change facilities like to use “bulk oil,” which as the name implies, is a single vis-cosity grade and specifi cation of oil bought in bulk from a supplier. It will often suffi ce for many motor vehicles, but certainly not all. If your car or SUV requires a specialized for-mula of motor oil, such as high-effi ciency 0W-20 synthetic, or a manufacturer’s specifi cation,

such as GM dexos, this “stan-dard” oil may cause problems and potentially invalidate the new-car warranty.

Ask if a premium oil fi lter will be installed

Often overlooked during an oil change is the quality of the oil fi lter. A premium fi lter, such as Fram UltraTM, can trap more damaging dirt from cir-culating through your engine. In standardized tests, this fi lter had double the dirt-holding ca-pacity of the leading economy fi lter brands’ average. The ability to trap and hold harmful particles for as much as 24,000 km becomes much more im-portant as automakers extend service intervals, often to just once a year.

How your mechanic han-dles these questions can help you determine if you trust his or her work. Not only that, but you’ll become an informed consumer, more knowledge-able about protecting your au-tomotive investment.

EMC AUTOMOTIVE GUIDE - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - PG. 10

o you re-member the car you drove in high school? If we publish

your story, you will receive an autographed copy of my latest book, “KEEP UP IF YOU CAN: Confessions of a high school teacher.”

Steve Fox of Barrie, Ontario, still owns the car he drove in high school: “In the summer of 1980, I was 13 and dad thought we should look for a car for me. Something we could work on together. I wanted a Mustang or Camaro. We went all over Ontario, visit-ing used car lots and check-ing the classifieds (no in-ternet then).

“In 1981, dad saw a

white convertible on Bay-field Street here in Barrie. We pulled into the drive-way and saw a car that seemed to go on forever: a 1969 Buick Electra 225 convertible. It wasn’t what I had hoped for but dad said: ‘Let’s go for a test drive.’ With dad driving and me riding shotgun, top down, mild night, people looking at us, air rushing by, the sound of the big 430, I started to like this car. Dad said: ‘How much money have you saved?’ I said $500 from working at the family bakery. He said that’s a good down pay-ment and I could have it paid off by the time I get my licence!

“Before I turned 16, dad would take me to the

Georgian Mall early Sun-day mornings to practise parking, backing up, and as dad would say, ‘getting my sea legs.’ I turned 16, got my licence, made my final payment to dad, and had to have money in the bank for insurance, gas, and repairs. The Buick was now mine!

“High school friends made fun of my ‘boat,’ sometimes calling it ‘Grandpa’s grocery getter.’ But we had great times with that car, driving to Wasaga Beach, the drive-in theatre, and parties in Muskoka. It never let me down except when I ran out of gas.

“Now nearly 30 years later, I still have my first car. Those same people that made fun of it now reminisce about the good times we had when driving it in high school. Dad al-ways enjoyed the car and I would often come home to find his car in the driveway and the big Buick gone with him for a drive.

“We lost dad in March

2009 but every time I fire up the big old Buick, he’s right there with me, enjoy-ing the drive.”

If the story of the car you drove in high school

is published in this col-umn, you will receive an autographed copy of Bill Sherk’s latest book “KEEP UP IF YOU CAN: Con-fessions of a high school

teacher.” To share your sto-ry and photos, email [email protected] or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leam-ington, ON N8H 3W2.
