Kingwood Mustang Track & Field News “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” – Derek Jeter LAST WEEK: The Mustangs opened up their 2020 season with the varsity at home, and the sub-varsity squads at Summer Creek . It was a great start for all five groups. The coaches were very pleased with where the Stangs started but all agreed strongly that this was just the “starting” point, and we have a lot of work to do. “On all levels, we had some ups and some downs, just like every meet I’ve seen as a coach in my career.” It was an exciting start to what looks to be an exciting season. Vol. 1, #3 – Feb. 19, 2020 THROWS: The Mustang Throwers were ready to let it fly. VARSITY GIRLS were led by Madison Brown and Camryn Guillory quality first meet efforts. Camryn took 3 rd in the shot with a 33’5.5” toss with Madison leading the way in the Discus, placing 2 nd throwing the plate 111’3”. That effort gave Madison the Field Woman of the Week honors! Maddie Wischnwski took 6 th in her first varsity shot put competition heaving the ball a P.R. 29’08 ¼ . In THE VARSITY BOYS ring, Chris Mathis tossed a season’s best of 167’ to claim the silver medal. Dylan Nangle picked up a P.R. with his 117’7” effort. At the JR VARSITY meet on Thursday, Jennifer Esparza took 5 th in both throws with 2 personal best marks of 25’1” and 59’6”, while on the boys side Cameron Bjornstad threw the ball 41’ for silver. Andrew Hodges threw a lifetime best of 115’2” in the discus. The FROSH THROWERS teamed up to 19 valuable points to the teams total. Great job chunkers! Grip it and rip it! HORIZONTAL JUMPS: The Stang “Long Leapers” Sam Baer took the gold in THE JV BOYS Long Jump (19’5 ½ ) as well as claiming bronze in the Triple (36’3”). The top triple jump came when Luis Candelaria hit the board, and soared 36’9” to claim the silver. THE VARSITY GIRLS were led by Lanie Reese, who placed 8 th in both the Long and Triple (15’10” & 34’5 ½ ), both in tough competition. The competition on the VARSITY BOYS side was no less competitive. In the Triple Jump Jack Townsend bounded out a 42’7” mark, which was a personal best by near two feet, which was good enough for 6 th and the distinction of Field Man of the Week. THE HURDLERS: THE VARSITY GIRLS picked ‘em up and put ‘em down with London White and Bethany Moffett starting off with times of 17.1 and 17.9 marks respectively in the 100 hurdles. The 300 hurdles saw Frosh Olivia Allen lead the charge with a 47.0 2 nd place finish. That plus her contributions in the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 Relays earned her the Runner of the Week. Also doing well in the long sticks was London White who was 3 rd in 47.31 and Bethany Moffett who took 5 th in 47.85. Keegan Swoops led THE VARSITY BOYS with his 15.7 3 rd place finish in the highs and 41.33 4 th in the intermediates. THE JV GIRLS Valerie Johnson who took double gold in the 100s as well as the 300s running fine times of 15.93 and 48.4 respectively. Meredith Scmitt claimed 2 nd in the 300 hurdles (51.16) with Kayla Frosinos taking 3 rd in 51.94. However the “Stick Steppers” didn’t stop there. They decided to make it a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the long hurdles so Camille McWhorter stepped in to take 4 th in 54.15. Frosinos took home the bronze in the 100 hurdles, timed at 16.97. Olivia’s movin’! THE SPRINTS: THE VARSITIES competed well very tough fields. THE VARSITY GIRLS team of Jenny Byrge, Natalia Shimel, Katherine Golla,and Peyton Varnadoe took 5 th place in in the 4 x 100 with a time of 50.60. Byrge, Golla and Shimel teamed up with Karis Garner for a 6 th in the 4 x 200 (1:49.6), with Shimel, Katie Sammnon, Allen and Varnadoe taking 5 th in the 4 x 400 in 4:10.6. With the help of a 47.9 anchor from Jalen Gordon, THE VARSITY BOYS finished 4 th in the 4 x 4 (3:21.98). The team was comprised of Josh Jones, Jack Griewisch, Nick Majerus and Gordon. Steven Thomas earned Mustang of the week honors for his outstanding anchor legs on the 4 x 1 & 4 x 2 relays as well as his nice 200 meter race.The JV BOYS saw Michael Williams have a “Mustang of the Week” day by taking 1 st in the 100 at 11.2 and 3 rd in the 200 (23.5) and anchoring the 4 x 100 Relay. The Mustang quartet of Cooper Amarantos, Nick Kresovich, Sam Baer and Trevor Anglin team up to take 3 rd in the 4 x 200. The 4 x 400 team of Amarantos, Avery Nahari, Pryce Roach and Jonah Dean grabbed the baton and the silver medal with a time of 3:43.4. Dean also found hardware in the open 400 taking 3 rd in 54.9. The JV GIRLS 4 x 100 team of Madison Seber, Maddie McLean, Jenna Vela and Josey Johnston took home the gold with a winning time of 53.4. McLean, Vela, and Seber teamed up with Nitva Cherlo for 3 rd in the 4x2 (1:58.77), while the team of Cara Ellis, Meredith Schmitt, Cherlo, and McLean were on top of the podium with a winning time of 4:32.5. Ellis also found pay dirt in the open 400 winning in 65.94. Tyrone Edwards led THE FISH BOYS sprinters as he captured 2 nd in the 200 running (24.4), with teammate Riley Stauber not far behind taking 3 rd also in 24.4 Edwards teamed up with Stauber, Izydorczyk, and Webster to earn silver in the 4 x 100 (48.3), with the same quartet taking 2 nd in the 4 x 200 in 1:39.4. The team made up of Webster, Roberts, Switzer and Koach also took home silver in the 4x4 clocking a 3:55.0. Kyle Switzer made a mark individually by placing 3 rd in the 400 in 58.3.     THIS WEEK: The JV and Frosh at Conroe was cancelled. The Varsity teams will be at the Sam Mosley Relays at Turner Stadium in Humble. See schedules below

    THE DISTANCE CREWS took car of business. At THE VARSITY LEVEL, THE GIRLS picked up big points starting with the Distance Medley Relay of Daniela Wisniewski, Rachel James, Peyton Varnadoe, and Carson Parker taking 2nd in 13:10.9. Their 4 x 800 (Lauren Johansson, Sky Hoffman, Mustang of the Week Katherine Golla, and Olivia Allen) claimed gold in the 4 x 800 clocking in at 9:58.8. Parker went on to take gold in the 1600 as well with a time of 4:15.0. THE BOYS had a pretty good day as well, taking 3rd in the 4 x 800 with Austin Colescott, Avery Narhi, Davis Murphyand Gabe Caudra. Individually, Nick Majerus had a banner day winning both the 800 (1:55.86) and the 1600 (4:21.03) and running a 51.1 leg on the 4 x 400. At the end of the day he claimed the Mustang of the Week title. The JV GIRLS distance runners certainly made their mark. First off the Distance Medley Relay of Macy Brown, Nitva Cherlo, Sophie Wesolo and Isabella Pinto took the gold medal in 14:31.5. Macy capped off her day with a win in the 1600 clocking in at 5:55.6, earning her the JV Girls Mustang of the Week. Also claiming medals in the 1600 were Lindsey Carter (2nd in 6:00.3) and Kayla Worachek (3rd in 6:17.9) for a Mustang 1-2-3 sweep. Carter clocked a 13:01.8 to win the 3200. Samantha Slaughter and Isabella Pinto went 1-3 in the 800 going 2:42.2 and 2:47.3 respectivcely. THE FRESHMEN BOYS saw Jack Snowden lead a 1-2-3 sweep in both the 800 and the 1600. Snowden’s winning marks of 2:19.0 in the 800 and 5:17.0 gave him the Mustang of the Week title. Completing the 800 sweep was Nathan Koach (2nd – 2:19.0) and Jacob Roberts (3rd in 2:20). In the 1600 Jack led Jackson Stanton (2nd 5:18) while Zander Moore finished with the broom taking 3rd in 5:23.The 3200 was Snowden again, taking gold in 11:14, followed by Ryan Rogers who was 2nd in 11:43. THE JV BOYS made themselves known as well with Jonathan Porras and Scott Sienkowski going 1-3 in the 3200, clocking 10:55, and 11:05 respectively. In the 800 Om Gawankar took gold in 2:08, while the 1600 belonged to Tyler Waddell who won in 4:58. Sienkowski claimed 3rd in 5:13. The DMR team of Tellez, McBee, Herrara and Carr took the top spot with a time of 12:38.

    THE VERTICALS: Leading the VARSITY GIRLS competitions, were Bethany Moffett who soared 5’ to claim 3rd in the GIRLS HIGH JUMP, and Megan Anglin clearing the GIRLS POLE VAULT bar at 9’6”, placing 6th . Freshman Marshall Bay took the bronze medal in the BOYS POLE VAULT clearing a height of 12’6”. At THURSDAY’S JV-9TH MEET the Mustangs Verticals amassed a combined incredible 114 points! The JV GIRLS got a boost with a 1-2 finish in the Pole Vault. Helen Chan took the gold with a leap of 8’6” giving her Field Woman of the Week. Isabelle Edmonson walked away with the silver medal vaulting 6’6”. The JV Girls High Jump saw another Mustang 1-2 punch as Madalyn Bearnth and Maeve Leaf jumped 4’10” and 4’8” respectively. The Boys Pole Vault competitions rounded out a Stang Sweep with Noah Ortiz winning the JV BOYS VAULT at 12’ (claiming Field Man of the Week), and Frosh Ryan Stoesser taking gold with a 10’6” jump. Will VanDyke took 3rd in the JV Vault (10’6”) and Bennett Fisher taking 2nd at 9’6” in the FISH VAULT. Needless to say, the Vertical Jumpers gave the Mustangs a real shot in the arm! Great Job!

    What was it called? Prior to KHS being opened the meet was the Wildcat Relays. After KHS opened the meet rotated between the two HISD high school. When it was at Kingwood, it was the Mustang Relays, and when at Humble it was the Wildcat Relays.
