As adolescents, my studentsare discovering who they aredaily. Our next thematic unit

is entitled Identity. Thestudents will read poetry andwrite poetry that requiresthem to analyze and evaluatethe factors that shape people. They will also read the mem-oir, The Color of Water, byJames McBride. This is a wellcrafted account of an African-American mans tribute to hiswhite, Jewish mother. It is atrue story about a young man

and his struggles to create hisown identity and to learn thetruth about his mothers. The

students will be writingweekly literary essays thatcritique characters, justifyconclusions, recommend so-lutions, and argue factors thatinfluence ones identity. I amlooking forward to hearingawesome discussions andreading amazing essays, po-ems, and self-reflections.

Students in Spanish for Native and Heritage speak-

ers just turned in their Anuncio Publicitario pro-jects. The projects were a huge success! We havesome very creative students who did an amazing jobselling their projects.

Our visual arts students arecurrently showcasing theirwork in our Surrendering

Symmetry Project. Studentsbegan this project by askingthemselves the followingquestion: can balance beachieved in the absence ofsymmetry? The search foranswers to this question ledus to the cosmos. Throughresearch and the use of visualaids, each student observedthe constellation that corre-sponds to the month in which

they were born. Studentsthen brainstormed and hashedout numerous sketches in

attempt to conjure up a famil-iar image that would fit intothe frame of the stars thatmade up their constellations.Upon achieving this, studentscreated background outerspace scenes and overlappedthem with that their manipu-lated constellations. Finally, students used translucentpigment to apply all of theseefforts onto Plexiglas. The

results show that studentsmade a major breakthroughby reaching out side of the

confines of their back groundsand give life to their art bysurrendering symmetry.
