My name is Kiran Ramsey and I am a junior information management and technology major with a concentration in web design at the iSchool at Syracuse University.

I have a passion for front-end and digital design, a desire to create beautiful, user-centered work and an incessant craving to learn. In the future I hope to use the world’s newest digital platforms to bring attention to the causes that matter most to me: preservation of the environment, gender equality, and social justice.

N E T F L I X R E D E S I G NMy latest personal project was a redesign of the Netflix mobile app. In considering improvements to the UI, I really wanted to make visuals pop. Afterall, isn’t that what TV is all about?

I added key art to the Sign In screen and allowed users to add their own profile pictures. On the show Landing Page, the majority of the Viewport is filled by key art to draw users into the show’s setting right away.

My initial sketches included a horizontal scroll menu, which was changed to a vertical pop-out menu after further user testing.

I began my redesign wanting to switch the background color from white to black, which can be seen in my sketches. After talking to a few users, the response was that the white was harsh on their eyes when they were watching TV on their phone at night in bed.

Unbolded headings and icons draw more attention to visuals. Bigger art, red accents with headings and more space between rows gives art space to breathe and separates objects.

On the Netflix Originals page, more space is added between titles to make art pop. Titles are also alphabetized by a scroll feature.

On the show Landing Page, key art takes up almost the entire screen instead of a third, drawing the user in. Options for navigation are found below, in close reach of user ’s thumbs.

I S Q W E B S I T E D E S I G NAlong with their logo, I designed and developed a website for Indiana Sound Quality, a large group of mobile audio enthusiasts around the Midwest. I edited all photos in Photoshop and used HTML, CSS and JavaScript to code the site.

The goal of the new site was to make it easier and more appealing for new visitors to join the group and for current members to find information about upcoming events.

Initially, my About page was split into two columns, with room for a biography for each team member. After discussing my wireframes with the president of ISQ , he requested that instead of biographies, we use the extra room for larger photos.

He also wanted to make sure that his members could find past articles on the News page and requested an archive feature.

After speaking to the president of ISQ , I began researching auto industry web design and color (shown far left), which featured a lot of red, a color associated with intensity and energy.

I then began prototyping in Photoshop, where many design decisions changed from my mockup. I decided to try a two-block layout on the Events page, added the archive feature to the News page and opted for a large-photo format for the About page.

S N A P C H A T G E O F I L T E R SAs a member of the marketing team for Students of Sustainability (SOS) at Syracuse University, I often get the chance to get creative about great causes.

SOS hosts Earthfest, an annual Earth Day festival held right off campus. Snapchat lets you overlay a location-specific graphic on top of your picture. These geofilters are a fun way to show people where you are and what you’re doing.

My role on the marketing team was to design three Snapchat geofilters for Earthfest.

Page 12: KIRAN RAMSEY GRAPHIC DESIGNER kiranramsey name is Kiran Ramsey and I am a junior information management and technology major with a concentration in web design at the iSchool at Syracuse

The marketing director of my team came to me with a geofilter she liked that she wanted me to draw inspiration from. I chose to incorporate a tree as the “A,” to associate the geotag with Earth Day, and distorted the letters in Illustrator for a more festive feel.

To the left are drafts created in Illustrator, from top to bottom.

Because this project was on a tight deadline, I was looking for inspiration everywhere. That April, I was working at Lowe’s in Syracuse when I stumbled upon a pretty cool looking leaf on a box. In the end, we decided to go with one that more closely resembled the Earthfest logo shown to the left.

On the bottom left are two initial drafts created in Illustrator.

D . O . S O C I A L M E D I AAs the first Digital Design Editor for The Daily Orange, I was tasked with overhauling our Twitter and Facebook pages with fresh designs that could be branded for each section: News, Sports, Visuals and Pulp, our features section.

Page 15: KIRAN RAMSEY GRAPHIC DESIGNER kiranramsey name is Kiran Ramsey and I am a junior information management and technology major with a concentration in web design at the iSchool at Syracuse

After discussions with my Editor in Chief and Managing Editor, I drafted up four versions of a Twitter and Facebook header. After a long discussion, we settled on the top left design, without the green “multiply” effect on the photos.

R O L L E R D E R B Y - T H E D . O .Every night at the The Daily Orange, I read the first draft of the articles I’m designing to get a feel for what fonts, colors and shapes fit the tone of the stories. I sketch my pages (shown left) to make sure I have enough room for every story, lay them out in InDesign and get creative on a strict deadline.

This feature story I designed was a profile of a Syracuse Roller Derby team. I chose a playful font, Jubilat, to contrast with the photos, as the story wasn’t a serious profile.

This design won First Place in the features design category of the 2016 MSU Society of News Design contest.

P A D D L E F E S TI was asked to design a logo for a paddleboarding competition by the owner of North End Outdoors (NEO) in Skaneateles, New York. The competition is an annual event held on Skaneateles Lake. I worked with the owner of NEO to create a logo that would attract local paddleboarding gurus to sign up!

Page 18: KIRAN RAMSEY GRAPHIC DESIGNER kiranramsey name is Kiran Ramsey and I am a junior information management and technology major with a concentration in web design at the iSchool at Syracuse

I sat down with the owner and learned that the competition would be open to all ages. She shared a website with me that displayed other paddleboarding competitions around the country, along with their logos (pictured left). She pointed out the ones that she liked, all of which had a circular design.

I carefully chose a teal color eyedropped from pictures of Skaneateles Lake. I felt teal would be more playful than a dark ocean blue, which I hoped would appeal to a younger audience.

I then sketched out my drafts, tweaking them in Illustrator and narrowed them down to four options to present to the owner. The final result was a combination of all four designs.
