Knowing that half of the school

year had passed already, and that some

of us only had a few months left to

study with our classmates, the students

were extremely excited, but some felt

sad as well.

During the vacation, some students

visited other countries while some

studied. What was special about this

summer vacation was that some mid-

to have an opportunity to visit Korea

through the G20 Generation Foreign

Student’s Camp which was held by

four universities in Korea. They were

able to experience a lot about Korea,

and they learned more about what

they had missed while living in the

Philippines.

It is not only students or teachers

that changed, but the environment.

The 1st and 2nd year of high school

class moved to the 1st floor in order to

provide more focusing atmosphere

for them. The school library provided

more books over the vacation for stu-

With all these changes in KISP,

we expect a better achievement from

The Folk Event Minwoo Jang G7

We had lots of events like “Tue

Hoe”. “Tue Hoe” is a game that has

about four holes and lots of sticks and

has an amount that you are given and

with that person who scores the high-

est amount wins. The key to winning

in this game is to shoot or throw the

stick and make the stick go inside the

hole.

“Roll the Hoop” was another

game. The key for this game is to bal-

ance and roll the hoop as fast as you

can to the other side of the line. It is a

game that brings back memories for

the elderly or for your mother and fa-

ther.

The relay game had a lot of obsta-

cles. You would have to run, and then

do ten jumping ropes, go inside a

plastic bag, and comeback again. We

had running relay, too.

There was the OX quiz, of course,

which had so many tricky questions,

but there were a lot of survivors even

though the questions were very tricky

for all of us.

We had a lot of drinks and snacks

too. We were cheering and cheering

got points for being cooperative with

the program, like sitting down fast or

being quiet and other similar things.

The program came to an end, and

the winner was the blue team. They

got chips and snacks for the prizes

and the white team also got snacks

but the snacks were not as good as

the blue teams. We all had fun with

the games and the thrill of who would

win the battle between the Blue team

The Korean Folk Day that

happened on September 8 was a

fun and happy event that all of

the students enjoyed. The things

that made the students happy

and eager to win I guess was the

prizes and the students’ competi-

tive minds. It was the white team

against the blue team.

KISP students from Grade 5 to

Grade 12 went to community service

at Gahanang Walang Hagdan on

October 8. We went to the a place

where many people with disabilities

are looked after. We divided into four

groups, and each group was assigned

a different area to clean.

After cleaning, some students per-

formed for the center. They showed

their talents. All the people staying there

came to the main hall to see us. Middle

schoolers played traditional Korean

instruments. One group was a persus-

sion quartet. They played a song called

“ S a m u l n o r i ” .

After that, three

girls played the

flute, and one boy

from elementary

played the violin.

Lastly, the band

played two songs.

Everyone en-

joyed it so much.

All of the middle and high

schoolers gathered in the AV on

November 26 at 8AM. Mr. Kim

gave us some information about

what we would do. He also ex-

plained about the American

cemetery. We were supposed to

watch a video, but sadly, it didn’t

work, so we left early for our

cleaning expedition.

We went down to Korean Em-

bassy. From there, we picked up all

the trash going up to American

cemetery. The weather was terribly

hot. Everyone was really tired from

walking down the road. We were

almost dying.

When we arrived in the cemetery,

we took pictures and listened to the

guide about how this place was built.

The Grade 9 students took their

graduation pictures there. Finally, we

went back to school and went home.

The Field Trip Seungyeon Kim G9

The KISP grade school students and

high school students went to field trip

last November 10, 2011. Students

started their field trip in enchanted

kingdom. They enjoyed the whole day

there. After that, they went to a place

called “World of life” and they stayed

there for the remained trip.

They played a lot of games such as

passing balls and tug-of-war. Also, they

had a contest which showed a lot of stu-

dents’ performances. The students spent

their free time with swimming, playing

soccer, pool - a lot of games. Because it

was so hot, the girls usually stayed in their

rooms and chatted, and slept. It was a

great field trip for the grade and high

school students.

The First Lady Visited My School Hyein Kwak G10

The students also had a chance to

ask questions to Mrs. Lee. You

Dayeong (G10) asked about the dif-

ficulties she faces as first lady, and

she answered that she faces a lot dif-

ficulties, such as she does not have

freedom to do anything personal,

however she can bear with that since

that only lasts for 5 years and it just

means that she is given an opportu-

nity to be a role model for everyone

else. A young boy from kindergarten

asked if she was married, and it

drove everyone into laughter.

It was such an honor for the stu-

dents to have a short moment with

the first lady. Students were able to

hear about her own life experience

and what she expects from KISP. She

also bought some rice cakes and

drinks for all the students and prom-

ised to donate books to the school

library.

On the 21st of November, 2011

the first lady of Korea visited KISP.

Mrs. Lee arrived in the Philippines

on the 20th with President Lee My-

oung Bak, and decided to visit KISP

to show her support and encourage

to its students.

Students prepared some welcome

performances for her. Hyein Kwak

(G10) and Junhyung Lee(G11) sang “I

Believe” with guitar accompaniment.

The elementary Grade 1 students sang

and played Korean traditional instru-

ments buk, janggu, ggweng-ga-ri, and

jing. The school band prepared

“Walking on Sunshine” and

“Arirang” , a Korean traditional song,

for her. The first lady sang along while

holding hands with those around her.

The Death of Steve Jobs Jaeha Park G9

The genius behind Apple,

smart phones, tablets, digital anima-

tion just passed away on October 5th,

2011. He had been suffering from

pancreatic cancer for a long time

and finally passed away at age 56.

His death, although expected, was

quite shocking to the world. The

world mourned his death, and he

will be missed.

Steve Jobs was an innovator,

and one of the most influential men on

earth. Not because of his power, or his

wealth, but because of what he has

been doing.

December 2011 Vol 02 Issue 02 KISP PIONEER PAGE 5

If Bill Gates brought computers

to office cubicles, Steve Jobs brought

them to homes, dorms and living

rooms. Several years later, he even put

them in our bags through the iPad,

iPod, Macbook, and the most famous,

iPhone. Any computer that we use to-

day is either his creation, or an imita-

tion of his genius.

It was him who made it possi-

ble for us to use computers, which

were at first unfriendly machines of

electronic codes. But then he bestowed

humanity and art in those, and made

them a part of our lives. He repeated

that again and again with several

magical machines and software that

start with a letter ‘i’. With those ex-

cellent creations, he made Apple the

most valuable company in the world.

This in fact, is true. Every day, we

encounter electronics made by Apple

or imitations of those machines. And

Steve Jobs made this possible in

the span of only a few years .

He is no god; he is just a man. But

he was indeed different. With the

brightest ideas, he changed the world

and made it better. Among his famous

lines, there was one specific quote that

moved my heart, “Stay hungry, stay

foolish.” This is up to you to interpret,

but what I think is this. Stay hungry for

challenges, and new opportunities, and

stay foolish by pursuing the things you

like doing. For Steve, it was making

computers familiar to everyone of age.

because he always has a happy face to

me and he is so kind to me.

So, that day was my best happy

and special day

Playing computer games is the

best way to spend time, because if

you play computer games, you will be

happy. So, you might study better

than normal because you are happy.

But, it is bad, if you do it for a very

long time, because you might spend

the night without sleeping and playing

games.

You can even get sick because

you won’t exercise very much.

Special Day Woojin Kwon G3

So, sometimes playing out with

friends is better than playing com-

puter games, and sometimes playing

computer games is better than

playing outside with your friends.

What do you think is better?

Playing with friends outside or

playing computer games?

Generally, children will choose

playing computer games, but some

people might choose playing outside

with friends or both of them.

I think playing computer games

is good just for 30 minutes a day,

because, if you do it too long, it’s

bad for you. 30 minutes a day is the

best time playing computer games.

I hope many people will like a bit of

computer games and a lot of exer-

cise.

Computer Games Junoh Kim G6

I think that playing com-

puter games for a long time is a

bad thing. I think it is a bad

thing because, playing computer

games for a long time can hurt

our eyes and can cause us to be-

come addicted to playing these

kinds of games.

Playing computer games can

cause us to become addicted and

lose our focus on studying because

the game “Counter Strike”.

This example showed me that

playing too much computer games is

a dangerous thing to children be-

cause some children cannot see that

difference between reality and the

virtual world. This is why I don’t

play over 2 hours of computer games

a day now.

December 2011 Vol 02 Issue 02 KISP PIONEER PAGE 6

all we would think about at school is

playing computer games.

I saw twice in the news that a

child in Korea was playing a gun

game called “Counter Strike”. The

child played for a very long time. Af-

ter he finished playing the games, he

thought he was still playing, so he

went to his mother and killed her be-

cause he thought he was still playing

People always create

things. Art is one of the crea-

tions of mankind, even before

the start of ancient civiliza-

tions. Even through the dark

times, art has continued to

flourish. Looking at art now,

we think if it is right for to

continue the improvement.

Other issues such as the envi-

ronment are in very dangerous

positions right now. So, should

we still support art, instead of

nature that has supported us?

In my opinion, I say yes.

First of all, nature, or the

environment has the power to

heal itself. Nature constantly

regenerates. Although we are

destroying the gift of nature

constantly that has made us

flourish, as time goes by, it

will heal itself from the pains

that we caused. One day, we

will be gone. We will die and

nature will rule the earth

again. Even if we can continue

to live on, it will take time. But

nature needs only half of the

time that humans need to

grow. Without us, the environ-

ment will still be able to live

on. But in the case of art, it

cannot. As I said, art is a

creation of mankind and if we

become extinct, art will be

gone from the world with us.

Secondly, art makes us who

we are. The identity of the hu-

man race is inside the paint-

ings, the books, the songs and

the plays. It is because of art

that we have emotions or

ideas. I believe this to be true.

Art is a form of expression

and it makes our monotone

world a vivid life in Techni-

color. Let’s say that we chose

for nature before art. Although

preserving nature would make

our lives safe and clean, what

would life mean if the colors

are all taken out? The world is

a canvas and art fills it with

identity, emotion and imagina-

tion.

So what should we do to pre-

serve art?

Well, the solution is simple:

express yourself. Of course,

funding those artists would be

important, but what would art

all be if the people didn’t ex-

press themselves? Did the

cavemen need money to paint

on the caverns? But of course,

purchasing a few paintings and

albums would give confidence

to the artists.

The government has to

support the artists and make a

better environment for them to

express themselves. Support-

ing copyright laws, making

more concert halls and muse-

ums would be quite helpful for

the artists.

Art is the most imaginative

or creative work of mankind.

As long as we exist, the

flames of art will never be put

off. Nature on the other hand

can exist without us. Humans

are going to be extinct any-

way, so why not enjoy the

most of art when there is

much to it?

The Libyan War: A High School Essay Contest Yoojin Choi G10

Topic: Does the United States

and the United Nation (which

is largely run by Western

world powers) have the right

to intervene in a foreign coun-

try’s affairs? Specifically,

should the US/UN have en-

tered the Libyan war to help

the rebel force defeat the dic-

tator Gaddafi, or should they

have remained observers, and

let the Libyan people sort out

their own domestic?

or give more weapons so that

they can defeat Gaddafi. If they

win, Libyan would thank to

them so later they will have

benefit, Libyan would also help

them if they have emergency.

Like the Korean war, United

States helped South Korea to de-

feat North Korea. If they didn’t

help, we will not be living like

this. We will have a harder time

surviving.

Therefore, I think helping

Libyan or any other countries if

they have a problem, U.S or U.N

should help them to survive.

Since we are all living closely,

we can’t just behave like nothing

happened. Since we all have

conscience, we all need to be

happy or sad together. So are

you willing to help others?

_________________________

Did you think of any war

occurring in our country nowa-

days? If we think of a war in our

mind, most people say that it’s

terrible, it should never happen,

and they get scared of it. A long

time ago, between a lot of coun-

tries, the war occurred. They

wanted to conquer others or get

money from them. So, other

countries, or the United Nation

helped them. In 2011, February,

Libya had a war. I think United

States and United Nation should

help them because, we are all

one, neighbors, and people

should live by helping each

other.

First of all, we are all

neighbors. In Libya, the dictator

Gaddafi, ruled the country over

40 years. Many Libyan hated

him because he was a very cruel

guy. He killed many people and

he even raped a women guard.

His wife was also a terrible

woman. She put her helper in a

boiling pot, because she didn’t

like her behavior. For these rea-

sons, Libyans wanted to get rid

of Gaddafi, so they started a

war. Finally, one person shot

Gaddafi. Even though he is

dead, their country will still

have problems. Many people

died because of war and some

escaped to other countries.

Moreover, when they had a

war, I think United States and

United Nation should help

them. Since U.S or other coun-

tries get oil from Libya, they

should help defeat Gaddafi.

They are like neighbors. We

should not ignore them All peo-

ple have conscience in them.

For example, our family is very

rich so everybody we eat deli-

cious food, wear nice clothes,

however our neighbors’ family

are very poor that they don’t

have any food to eat. How can

we ignore them since we are

close? We will need to help

them to survive. Everyone will

blame us if their family died,

because we are living close, and

rich.

Lastly, we should live by help-

ing everyone around us. Even

though it’s a war, U.S, U.N, can

send military if Libya lack of it,
