6 The Kitsap County Fair Official 2012 Program H Brought to You by Nickel Publications
FAIR HISTORYThe first recorded Kitsap County Fair was held in 1923 in Port Orchard, some 15 miles from its present location. It moved to Bremerton, its present location, in 1958. In 1929, exhibitors at the Fair totaled 1,000; today there are more than 6,000, with annual attendance of 80,000.
In 1960, the Chief Kitsap Stampede sold stock certificates for $1 and constructed the Thunderbird Arena. When completed it held 12,000 spectators. In the late ‘70’s, portions of the Arena were condemned. The covered grandstands were later added. Today the Arena holds 5,000 spectators and is used year-round for various events such as D-derby, Draft Horse Show, monster trucks and more. The complex has an annual overall attendance at its various events of more than 211,000.
AIMS & PURPOSESThe Kitsap County Fair & Stampede is held annually for the purpose of educating, entertaining and creating a better quality of life for the residents of Kitsap County and surrounding counties.
EDUCATIONWill consist of teaching our youth historical lessons so they may better understand what has shaped Kitsap County to become what it is today and what it will become in the future. We promote agriculture so that consumers may better understand the source of their food and fiber. We will also provide information to consumers so that they may make better choices of products and ideas in their private lives. Competitive exhibits are another one of the tools that our fair will use to educate our customers.
ENTERTAINMENTWill be available to assist people in enjoying the fair and it will also be used as a tool to increase fair attendance so that we may do a better job of education.
A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFEWill be the end result of the education and entertainment provided by the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede. Providing meeting space for our public to use off season is another way that we improve the quality of life for our customers. The Kitsap County Fair & Stampede generates community spirit by being the largest interaction of residents from our county and the surrounding counties.
Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Fairgrounds & Events Center in the Training Center, located next to the Parks Main Office. Please note: the Fair Board does not meet in December.

Xtreme Bulls came back for its 9th year, bringing exciting levels of exposure to both the sport of bull riding and to the Kitsap Stampede & Rodeo. This year, on Wednesday, August 22nd, Xtreme Bull riding fans enjoy some of the most intense bull riding competition in professional rodeo.
Xtreme Bulls Sponsored by Clearwater CasinoWednesday August 22nd, at 7 in the Thunderbird Arena
Watch what happens when the world’s best bull riders fight for a $10,000 purse. World class riders and world class bulls. Don’t miss the action as you watch the professional athletes or rodeo.
Come see why we’ve been voted one of the top 5 rodeos in the country!
Since 1947 folks have come from miles around to see what the ruckus in Kitsap County, Washington was all about. Every year that ruckus gets bigger, the contestants more daring and bold. When the bulls, the horses, the clowns come to town...well, let’s just say you’ll want to see what’s kicking up all that dust. Without giving away the show, we can tell you it’s about top athletes competing for big dollars. It’s about broncos throwing their hooves any which way, bulls that are mad at the world, and leather straps holding cowboys together.

“For youth livestock exhibitors, the work starts long before the Kitsap County Fair and Stampede begins. Kids as young as 8 and as old as 18 spend hours brushing hair, polishing hooves and trimming toenails. On opening day they make last-ditch efforts to soothe fickle tempers, adjusting leading movements and putting the final touches on their yearlong effort.” – Kitsap Sun

W e are the Kitsap County Stampede
Starlets . Our team was formed 14 years ago and is made up of past queens and princesses of the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede, 4-H, Sheriff ’s Posse, performance and rodeo.
Even though we come from different horse-related backgrounds, our passion for the sport of rodeo is the same. We are an elite group of some of the best horsewomen in Kitsap
County. Our vision, hard work and dedication shine through in our fast-paced routine – keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats and an American Flag presentation that will bring a tear to your eye. Our ultimate goal is to represent our community and provide a top quality show for all to enjoy.
Adysson is the daughter of Josh and Michele Kolbas and lives in Silverdale. She has two older sisters, Tori and Kaytlin and one little brother named Wyatt. She is 6 years old and
a Kindergartner at Cougar Valley Elementary. Adysson loves to play outside and hunt for bugs and ride her bike, she also loves ballet and reading. Her favorite food is cheese, but not the stinky kind! When she grows up she plans to move to England to become a real princess!! Adysson is looking forward to her year as Miss Katie Kitsap and loves every time she gets to see her Queen Crystal, who she has said is the best at giving hugs! Katie Kitsap is a program supported by the Bremerton Elks Club.

I recently graduated from the Port Townsend School of Massage. My career goal is to become an equine massage therapist and create a program to rehabilitate horses. I have been extremely busy attending as many public events and rodeos as possible, promoting the sport and American tradition of professional rodeo. I would like to thank all our sponsors and the Pageant Association for all their hard work and time. I look forward to meeting you all at our Kitsap Fair & Stampede.

Wrestling a steer requires more than brute strength. The successful steer wrestler, or bulldogger, is strong, to be sure, but he also understands the
principles of leverage. When the bulldogger’s horse pulls even with the steer, he eases down the right side of the horse and reaches for the steer’s horns. After grasping the horns, he digs his heels into the dirt. As the steer slows, the cowboy turns the animal, lifts up on its right horn and pushes down with his left hand in an effort to tip the steer over. The clock stops when the steer is on his side with all four legs pointing the same direction.
Rules & Penalties: 1. Steers are allowed a head start, of a length proportional
to the size of the “box” and the arena; if a cowboy exits the box too early, he breaks the barrier and is assessed a 10-point penalty
2. The steer must be on all four feet until the cowboy changes the steer’s direction
steer wrestlingSponsored by Shearer
Excavation In barrel racing, the contestant and her horse enter the arena at full speed. As they start the pattern, the horse and rider trigger an elec-tronic eye that starts the clock. Then the racer
rides a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels posi-tioned in the arena, and sprints back out of the arena, tripping the eye and stopping the clock as she leaves. The contestant can touch or even move the barrels, but receives a five second penalty for each barrel that is overturned. With the margin of victory measured in hundredths of seconds, knocking over one barrel spells disaster.
Rules & Penalties: 1. A ride must last eight seconds to be scored 2. If the cowboy touches the bull or himself with his free
hand, he is disqualified 3. If the bull doesn’t buck to performance specifications,
the judge may offer the cowboy a re-ride on another bull – and he’ll start with a clean slate.

Bareback riding, developed in the rodeo arena many years ago, consistently produces some of the wildest action in the sport. Throughout the eight second ride,
the cowboy must grasp the rigging (a handhold made of leather and rawhide) with only one hand.
Rules & Penalties: 1. A ride must last eight seconds to be scored. 2. If the cowboy comes out of the chute with his feet
below the break of the horse’s shoulders, he is disqualified.
3. If the cowboy touches the horse or himself with his free hand, he is disqualified.
4. If the horse doesn’t buck to performance specifications, the judge may offer the cowboy a re-ride on another horse – and he’ll start with a clean slate.
Team roping is unique in that two cowboys work together for a shared time. The first cowboy, known as the “header”, ropes the steer either by the horns, around the
neck, or “half head” which is one horn and the neck. The second cowboy is known as the “heeler”. He moves in behind the steer and attempts to rope the back feet. If he only manages one hind foot, the team
receives a five-second penalty. Time is stopped when both cowboys’ horses are facing each other.
Rules & Penalties:
1. Steers are allowed a head
start, of a length proportional to the size of the “box” and the arena; if the header exits the box too early; he breaks the barrier and is assessed a 10-second penalty.
2. The head catch must be around both horns, the neck, or one horn and the neck; any other catch results in a disqualification.
3. If the heeler only catches one leg, a 5-second penalty is added to the clocked time of the run.
4. If the header doesn’t change the direction of the steer before the heeler catches, the run is disqualified.

Definition of Bucking Chute: The bucking chutes are the stock pens in a rodeo arena where the wild horses and bulls are placed. Cowboys and cowgirls then place their riding equipment on the animal and mount for their ride. A gate that opens up into the arena is flung wide when the competitor nods their head.

Like bronc riding, tie
down roping is an event born on the ranches of the Old West. Today, success in tie down roping depends largely on the teamwork between a cowboy and his horse. After catching and flanking the calf, the cowboy ties any three of the ani-mal’s legs together using a “pigging string” he carries in his teeth until needed. When the cowboy com-pletes his tie, he throws his hands in the air as a signal to the judge. He then remounts and allows the rope to
become slack. Rules & Penalties: 1. Calves are allowed a head start, of a length proportional
to the size of the “box” and the arena; if a cowboy exits the box too early, he breaks the barrier and is assessed a 10-second penalty
2. The tie must include at least one wrap around any three legs and a half hitch knot, or “hooey”; otherwise, the run is disqualified
3. The time limit is 25 seconds 4. If the rope comes off the calf before the cowboy has a
hand on it, the run is disqualified
tie-down roping
Rodeo’s “clas-sic” event,
saddle bronc riding, has roots that run deep in the his-
tory of the Old West. Ranch hands would often gather and compete among themselves to see who could display the best style while riding untrained horses. It was from this early competition that today’s event was born.
Rules & Penalties: 1. A ride must last eight seconds to be scored 2. If the cowboy comes out of the chute with his
feet below the break of the horse’s shoulders, he is disqualified
3. If the cowboy touches the horse or himself with his free hand, he is disqualified
4. If the horse doesn’t buck to performance specifications, the judge may offer the cowboy a re-ride on another horse – and he’ll start with a clean slate.
