KIWANIS CLUB OF MUKILTEO Kiwanis is a global organizaon of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a me. Kiwanians Lead The Way September, 2015 If you are a leader, how are people describing you? Personal characteriscs and expres- sive words such as intelligent, adaptable, strong role model, and communicator are admirable descriptors. Indeed they are qualies every leader should aspire to. Equally important, comes the ability to empower others, to develop strengths and skills that enhance overall performance, and to guide others in the noon that being a leader is not noun, but a full-fledged verb. A revoluonary leader means you have enthusiasc, energized followers. By modeling a team-play configuraon, you tell others that you value their contribuon, that you are open to honest and authenc dialogue and negoaon, and that you are acvely foster- ing their self-confidence and success. An effecve leader presents challenges as a learning tool so followers may hone and refine their skill sets and abilies. This strategy fosters in them a belief that they can step out of their comfort zone even at the risk of failure. Thomas Edison said, I have not failed, Ive just found 10,000 ways that wont work.Challenges strengthen their resolve to not only meet a goal but to exceed even their own expectaons. True leaders work to bolster effecve, clear communicaon. Whether it is verbal discourse, or a non-verbal message, personal connecon is crucial in encouraging follow- ers to be passionate about goals, to feel included and to meet the call to acon. One of the best ways a leader can boost a persons confidence is a simple, job well done.Remember, if you arent a good leader, you wont have followers. All that said, as a service organizaon, Kiwanis Club of Mukilteo is a leader. Its program has energized its members and helped them develop relaonships within the community. These members are enthusiasc and fervent about club goals and projects. Kiwanis nurtures and adopts projects that will aid others (students, families, other organizaons) to succeed. Kiwanians Lead The Way

September, 2015

If you are a leader, how are people describing you? Personal characteristics and expres-sive words such as intelligent, adaptable, strong role model, and communicator are admirable descriptors. Indeed they are qualities every leader should aspire to. Equally important, comes the ability to empower others, to develop strengths and skills that enhance overall performance, and to guide others in the notion that being a leader is not noun, but a full-fledged verb. A revolutionary leader means you have enthusiastic, energized followers. By modeling a team-play configuration, you tell others that you value their contribution, that you are open to honest and authentic dialogue and negotiation, and that you are actively foster-ing their self-confidence and success. An effective leader presents challenges as a learning tool so followers may hone and refine their skill sets and abilities. This strategy fosters in them a belief that they can step out of their comfort zone even at the risk of failure. Thomas Edison said, “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Challenges strengthen their resolve to not only meet a goal but to exceed even their own expectations. True leaders work to bolster effective, clear communication. Whether it is verbal discourse, or a non-verbal message, personal connection is crucial in encouraging follow-ers to be passionate about goals, to feel included and to meet the call to action. One of the best ways a leader can boost a person’s confidence is a simple, “job well done.” Remember, if you aren’t a good leader, you won’t have followers. All that said, as a service organization, Kiwanis Club of Mukilteo is a leader. Its program has energized its members and helped them develop relationships within the community. These members are enthusiastic and fervent about club goals and projects. Kiwanis nurtures and adopts projects that will aid others (students, families, other organizations) to succeed. The club has taken on the responsibility (and it is a privilege) of harnessing the Citizen of the Year obligations and assignments. We are a well recognized club within the entire county that provides for our young people, whether it’s scholarships, clothing, school supplies and other necessities. We are called upon regularly by Historic Flight Foundation and other organizations to assist where needed. We have a longstanding reputation of integrity, hard work, and commitment. We lead in club numbers, service projects and team spirit. We can proudly proclaim, “We are leaders!” -Kim Voetberg

August 21-23

Portland, OR

The Pacific Northwest District Convention was held in Portland this year, from August 21st-23rd. The convention was a great opportunity to meet others in the district and see what was going on in other clubs. Following the opening session Friday morning, attendees had the option of choosing a number of forums. Some heavily attended forums covered topics like How to Invite Members to the Club, How to Interact With New Media, and How Young Professionals Kiwanis Clubs Operate. But the convention was not limited to forums. Throughout the convention there were a number of times to socialize. There was a little bit of dancing, some fundraiser games, and karaoke.

In addition to the socializing and learning we had a number of service activities. This year through one of the fundraising games (and with a last minute push during the Governors banquet) we raised $15,000 for Project Eliminate, our Kiwanis International Project (for our new members, check out www.theeliminateproject.org for details). We also raised another $4,000 for our Service Leadership Program outreach. In addition, throughout the convention, we were able to make 108 kids size blankets for various clubs to use in their projects.

We had a number of speakers throughout the session. We had a mix of motivational speakers and those with various ser-vice groups, including SIGN Fracture Care International, who helps provide cost effective surgical devices to heal fractures for those that may previously would not be able to receive care.

Overall, convention was great. We were able to learn about a number of topics, elect a Governor for 2016-2017 (Ron Myers from the South Whidbey club) and meet others throughout the district. I recommend anyone that wants to learn about Kiwanis as a whole would enjoy attending the district convention.

Saturday, August 22

The Mukilteo Lodge

As you all know, fellow Kiwanian Howard Phillips took an epic journey around the United States

on his motorcycle, meeting with veterans and their families, and bringing awareness to the

Wounded Warrior Project. Recently he returned home with many stories to share and with a

renewed sense of pride for the men and women who have or are currently serving in the

military.

So recently on a warm Saturday….it was a Welcome Back Party...Oh, no, it was a secret Happy

Birthday Party. Oh, no, it was...well it was a celebration of Howard’s commitment to bringing

awareness to the Wounded Warrior Project AND okay, it was a “We’re glad you’re home, safe

and sound” gathering, too. (AND a hurrah for our special friend….Skip Kidd!!! who joined us)
