Also attending were Alan Burg, Kathie Wilder, Eloise Lavin, Joe Medrano, Dale Leslie, Lar- ry French, Ken Hillenburg, Sue Dailey, Julanne Williams, Bob and Luz Snyder. Betsy found the event very worthwhile. The business meetings, workshops, award ceremonies, and the informal educational/social exchanges were most helpful. Our sponsored ACTION club President gave an address. The first Al Dailey award was presented to Sue Dailey to the de- light of those present. Our newsletter won first place. A ma- jor theme was, embrace change and remain forward thinking. Proposed KCD Sale Information Then Immediate Past President John Goff kicked off the series of informational meetings on the sale of the Kiwanis Center Down- town Building. Each person present received a booklet of relevant information. Sherry Springer went over the high points of his writ- ten comments about the history of the sale. George Gilligan then provided his view on past administrative and logistical problems that led to the need for space beyond the downtown Kiwanis building followed by the high points of our present situation and the need to take action. Sherry and George’s detailed written comments are in the booklet provided. If someone wishes to submit a written question or com- ment, boxes are placed in the club meeting room and in Ladies Clothing. Cliff Sheldon and Larry French developed financial in- formation on past, current, and projected revenue and expenses. Again this information is in the booklet handed out today. Today’s Program… Convention News Betsy Ford gave a brief report on the recent Kiwanis Michi-gan District Convention. Also attending were Alan Burg, Kathie Wilder, Eloise Lavin, Joe Medrano, Dale Leslie, Lar-ry French, Ken Hillenburg, Sue Dailey, Julanne Williams, Bob and Luz Snyder. Betsy found the event very worthwhile. The business meetings, workshops, award ceremonies, and the informal educational/social exchanges were most helpful. Members and volunteers discussed the pro-posed sale at Monday’s meeting.
Today’s Program Continued… Sale volunteer coordinator Glenda Maten noted the close connection with customers which is unique to KCD. She believes that we will lose customers, volunteers, and members if we give up the downtown loca-tion. Glenda suggested that when the temporary Washington Street construction starts we can take weekend drop offs in the nearby Krause Street lot.
Sale volunteer Jan Bower emphasized the sense of community she sees at the downtown sale. Customers feel welcome here. She noted that volunteers not only work, but shop the downtown sale. She does not feel this atmosphere at KCW.
Bill Hallock read a note from long-time customer and now volunteer Paul (the tool man) Schafner. Paul not-ed the personal connections/boutique experience at the downtown sale. He drew on the decisions of two other Ann Arbor businesses in similar situations. The Ark made a commitment to downtown Ann Arbor and made it work. However, Borders (books) chose to grow outside downtown, go “big box”, and failed.
Larry Hill noted that the downtown location leads to other downtown activity as sale workers and customers eat and shop in connection with their visit to the downtown sale on Saturday morning. Larry noted that some club members have chosen to move downtown in part to be closer to the downtown building. Larry sees the downtown building as an institution in Ann Arbor that is too important to lose. Larry went on to note that future development on the “Brown Block” parking lot across from our building will have public parking in it.
Marianne Clauw noted that the downtown building can be an asset in attracting community service minded, working 20/30/40/50 year olds, especially if they have their club meetings in this building in the evening after work. She also proposed alternative fund raising thru cooperative efforts with past and future grantees such as 50-50 raffles.
Max Ziegler noted that we could find warehouse space for much less cost than Kiwanis Center West.
The discourse will continue at future informational meetings.
