Summer is usually thedomain of the action filmand the blockbuster. Afterweeks of explosions and carchases (however awesomethey may be) Ive been itch-ing for a good chick flick.

The mother-daughter markethas found their movie in thislatest musical, Mama Mia!,from director Phyllida Lloydand based on the Broadwayshow of the same namewhich has been successfulin New York, Toronto andeven in Ottawa (and withgood reason).

Having seen both themovie and show, I know twothings: 1) both are almostinterchangeable and 2) eventhe critics and cynics willtap their toes.

The story is of a younggi r l , Sophie (AmandaSeyfried), who is prepar-ing for her upcoming wed-ding to fiance Sky (DominicCooper) at her home in

Greece. Her mother Donna(Meryl Streep) has mixedfeelings about her daughtergetting married and helpsquell her loneliness withthe company of her visit-ing best friends, cookbookwriter Rosie (Julie Walters)and multi-divorcee Tanya(Christine Baranski). ButSophie is scheming a planthat will force Donna to notonly confess secrets abouther past, but also relive thepain that came along with it.

Sophie, curious to findout who her father is,reads her mothers journaland invites her three pos-sible fathers: Sam (PierceBrosnan), Bill (StellanSkarsgard) , and Harry(Colin Firth).

The resulting confusionand hilarious scenarios flyby at a fever pitch with theclassic style of an old-fash-ioned musical.

The film is forced to cuta great deal of plot fromthe musical, focusing moreexclusively on Streep thanSophie. This is understand-able, of course, because

Streep is a seasoned actresswith a massive following,and Seyfried can perhapsonly be recognized for hersupporting role in MeanGirls.

However, despite thegreen-horned Seyfried being

placed in a pivotal role, shenot only handles it graceful-ly but also proves that shealso has a career in singingahead of her.

Pierce Brosnan, however,does not. Nor does MerylStreep, but since shesMeryl Streep I didnt carea bit what she did, I justwanted to watch her.

Most surprisingly for mewas Firth shedding his com-mon Mr. Darcy persona andplaying a neurotic formerGoth with questionable sex-uality. He is not only hilari-ous, but sings better than Iever could have imagined.

And, of course, I mustntforget the music, which isthe foundation of the entire

film. The iconic songs ofABBA are the current whichkeeps the plot of this filmflowing, and are the perfectbackdrop for this tale.
