Kerkenes is an Iron Age city built on a lowmountaintop in Central Anatolia. It is very probably theplace that Herodotus called Pteria, in which case it wouldhave been under Median control before the five-year warbetween Media and Lydia ended at the Battle of the Eclipsein 585 BC. Seven kilometres of strong stone defences, pierced by seven gates, enclose 2.5km2. The entire urbanarea was planned to include public buildings and urbanblocks as well as a sophisticated system of watermanagement. The city was then deliberately torched andthe defences comprehensively slighted. According toHerodotus, the Pterians were enslaved by Croesus, King ofLydia, before the Battle of Pteria, fought between Cyrus theGreat of Persia and the Lydians, in about 547 BC. Work in2003 has revealed the existence of many Phrygian traits inthe architecture and material culture of the Iron Age city.An international team has been working each summer since1993 on the Kerkenes Dað, using new techniques to revealthe secrets of this ancient city.

Quite unexpected discoveries of considerable importancewere made in 2003: fragments of small-scale relief sculptureinscribed in Old Phrygian at the Palace Complex entrance, a steppedmonument with an aniconic (featureless representation of a deity)stone stele in the Cappadocia Gate, and excavation of a megaron inthe lower area reveal the extent of Phrygian influence. Equallyunexpected architectural elements seem more local in character.
A short spring season, made possible by the kindness ofRepresentative Songül Erbay, allowed considerable extension of theresistivity survey, revealing buildings crowded together before thedestruction. Conservation of the stone glacis at the Cappadocia Gateand the Palace Complex façade, supervised by RepresentativeMehmet Katkat, improved the visual impact of these monuments.Dramatic evidence for the ferocity of the fire was found at the PalaceComplex where large beams were incorporated into wall faces andhuge wooden columns supported a thatched roof. Dating this fire iscrucial to understanding the historical setting. Stylistic analysismight favour the mid sixth century, and thus the identification ofKerkenes with Pteria, but unequivocal evidence remains elusive. While the Central Anatolian character of the urban foundationcomes increasingly into focus, only further work will fully exposethe cultural complexities and the extent of Phrygian influence.
At the expedition base the Depot was fenced and a new welldrilled. Further experiments in appropriate village building usingtraditional and recycled materials have aroused both local and inter-national interest.

THE URBAN SURVEY
Two weeks of fine May weather permittedsubstantial expansion of the Resistivity Survey in thelower, central portion of the city (Fig. 3). The groundwas moist and soft so that on most days nine grids, each measuring 20 by 20m, could be surveyed. Thisbroader survey area now makes it possible to recognisesignificant differences in spatial patterning across thiscentral portion of the city. As a result of warm andsunny conditions the higher ground soon began to dryout and turn brown. By mid May only the marshy areabetween the western and central zones, which appearsto be devoid of remains, remained wet. A month laterthe entire area was dry and parched with cracksappearing in the ground. It is striking how the environ-mental conditions alter from year to year because ofvariation in the levels of snow and rainfall throughoutthe winter and spring.
Within the south-eastern portion of theResistivity Survey, between the two main branches ofthe stream (Fig. 5 at right), large urban blocks charac-terised by numerous rows of cell-like units can bediscerned. These structures, which were presumablyfor storage, had been discovered in previous seasonsbut extension of the survey area in 2003 made possiblethe identification of later enclosures, perhaps animalpens, their boundary walls appearing as thick sinuouslines some of which transect the Iron Age compounds.
In the central sector, where the shepherd set upcamp in the spring (Fig. 4), one particular complexcontains a variety of structures, including twomegarons. These apparently exceptional buildings, which were first identified in 2000, were examined byexcavation in 2003.
The western portion of the survey, on the left ofFigure 5, revealed somewhat irregular urban blocksand enclosures of varying size. The shapes andproportions of these blocks were to some degreeinfluenced by topography. Resistivity imageryconfirms that each block contains a number ofstructures, including one or more two-roomedbuildings, but not the long parallel rows of cells seen inthe eastern part of the survey area. The northern part ofthe western side, seen at top left on Figure 5 shows aplethora of small two-roomed buildings huddledtogether in a rather unorganised fashion.
EXCAVATIONS IN THE LOWER CITY
By the summer the shepherd had moved hismobile tent and animals to the southern end of the city, thereby allowing us to excavate half of one megaron(Cover and Fig. 6) as well as to examine portions ofrelated structures nearby. The megaron comprises alarge square hall, measuring c. 8.00 by 8.00m with awide central doorway, a raised but poorly preserved,

central hearth and a clay floor. Stone footings, neatly built fromgranite fieldstones, would have supported mud-brick walling which,if the width of the foundations is any guide, must have stood to aconsiderable height. Load-bearing timber posts were set along theinner face of the footings. No certain indications were found forinternal timber posts or their stone bases, although such wouldsurely have been placed to support a pitched roof across the 8mspan. Patches of burning on the floor point to a roof covering ofthatch or wooden shingles and twin leaved wooden doors. At thefront of the building was an open porch which would seem to havepossessed a raised wooden floor. The interior stone walling appearsto have been left bare without so much as a coating of mud-plaster.The building itself was devoid of finds. External surfaces were stonepaved. The particular importance of this building, together with itstwin, Structure B on Fig. 6a, lies in its demonstration of strongPhrygian influence from western regions of the Anatolian Plateau. That the excavated megaron was partially cut through pre-existingstone paving shows that it was not constructed in the very first phaseof urban development.
Structure C consists of a row of small cell-like rooms two ofwhich were partially investigated. Here too the mud-brick wallsrested on stone footings and there was a thatched roof. A number oftripod bowls (e.g. Fig. 9), carved from soft sandstone, wererecovered from Structure C and the paved area between it and themegaron. Partial investigation of the northwest corner of StructureD (Fig. 7) revealed stone fill containing a pair of ornate, biconical, sandstone bases with recessed tops (Fig. 8). These distinctive pieceswere not in their original position. In Structure D there areindications of post-destruction disturbance in which the stone baseswere displaced. Later, erosion most probably ate away the collapsedmud-brick of the megaron before marshy conditions led to the buildup of peaty brown soil. Excavation in Structure E documentedinsubstantial stone footings beneath a thick layer of collapsed anderoded mud-brick. A displaced sandstone block was perhaps thebase for a wooden column supporting a pitched, thatched roof.
The ornate sandstone bases together with a series ofsandstone tripod bowls add some credence to the idea that themegarons and associated buildings perhaps served some publicfunction. This conclusion is fully in keeping with the centrallocation of this complex. In addition to any special importance thatmay be attached to these particular buildings, on which a full reportwill appear in Anatolia Antiqua XII, these excavations in the centreof the city have confirmed that it is possible to interpret accuratelythe geophysical imagery at Kerkenes.
THE PALACE COMPLEX
The Monumental EntranceExcavation of the northern half of the monumental entrance
to the Palace Complex (Fig. 10) showed that the wide stone-pavedpassage was covered by a substantial pitched roof covered with reedthatch. A square sandstone post base with a circular recess to retaina wooden column 1.00m in diameter (Fig. 10e) might havesupported the northern side of this roof. The pediment may havebeen adorned by the pair of bronze ibex, shown on the cover ofKerkenes News 5, perhaps flanking a sacred tree. There appear tohave been wooden doors strengthened with long iron bands affixedwith big dome-headed nails, while iron brackets strengthened orjoined other architectural timbers (Fig. 10f at right).

11Kerkenes News 6 - 2003
The lower courses of the North Tower were builtof smoothed, tightly fitted, granite blocks while theupper courses comprised large sandstone blocks heldtogether with wooden clamps (Fig. 10f at left).Masonry courses were interspersed with large timberbeams (Fig. 10d). Architectural embellishment in theform of sandstone bolster fragments with endsdecorated with compass-drawn concentric circles (Fig.10 h), all carved from sandstone, perhaps derive fromstone capitals and the top of the tower. Conflagration ofthe many large timber elements created an inferno thatthoroughly cracked the granite, sometimes attainingtemperatures sufficient to melt it as well as to vitrifysandstone.
A unique architectural piece (Fig. 10g),apparently an element from a freestanding monumenterected towards the rear of the passage, is ornamentedwith three-quarter bolsters and bolster ends in relief.Wooden pegs attached it to other elements of the samemonument which very probably supported an inscribedand sculpted element from which a number of thepieces described below were recovered. It is likely thatwhen the burning roof collapsed the monument wassmashed and dispersed, some fragments escaping theflames whilst others were burnt red or black, a feweven vitrifying. The task of joining these bits is madeyet more difficult by this sharp contrast in colour. Theinscription, which runs around the four margins of aminimum of two adjacent faces, is in Old Phrygian. Insome parts the scribe lightly roughed out the letters andthen adjusted the spacing as required, as can be seen onthe near face on Figure 13. Additional small fragmentsattest the presence of more than one inscribed piece inthe vicinity of this entrance. Small-scale reliefsculpture (Figs 11 and 12) includes depictions offigures in human form. One fragment has the nakedfeet of two individuals toe-to-toe while a fragmentfrom a different panel depicts a clothed figure holdingwhat is perhaps a spear butt. Parts of winged griffins,

lions, and rosettes were also recovered. Old Phrygian isnot yet fully deciphered, although its affinity to theearliest written Greek has long been apparent. Thesepieces are being studied by Claude Brixhe. All thatneed be said before the likely recovery of furtherfragments in 2004 is that the Kerkenes inscription (orinscriptions), the largest corpus to have been found to-date east of the Kýzýlýrmak (Halys River), contains adedication.
The Stone PavementThe broad granite pavement (Figs 10a and c), a
small part of which was first uncovered in 2000, nowstretches an impressive 30m. Several setting lines canbe identified, which are indicative of workingtechniques and phases of construction. There areindications that portions of the pavement wereprobably laid before the construction of the NorthTower, while it was already known that Structure B hadbeen built over and partially cut through twosuccessive phases of this paved surface. Some of thepaving stones have been worn to a polish.Documenting such differential wear forms part of awider GIS study of transportation and traffic atKerkenes.
The Ashlar BuildingThe southern half of the inner room of the Ashlar
Building, reported in Kerkenes News 5 and AnatoliaAntiqua XI (2003) pp.111-129, was excavated in itsentirety by David Stronach. It can now be understoodthat this room, which proved to be somewhat longerthan anticipated, had a wooden surround. It may beimagined that plush furnishings provided a greaterdegree of comfort than that afforded by the sandstonesurround of the outer room. The room was devoid offixed internal features, lacking both roof supports anda hearth.

KAPADOKYA KAPISI

THE CAPPADOCIA GATE
Further clearance at this large and visuallyimpressive monument, the walls of which were builtentirely of stone, made it possible to draw a revisedplan (Fig. 14).
The Gate Passage and Gate ChamberWork in 2003 fully revealed the front portion of
the Gate Passage (Fig. 15) where it was confirmed thatthe crowning course of sandstone blocks was confinedto the front of the towers. In a new section cut acrossthe Gate Passage it was once again seen that the carpetof small charcoal fragments over the surface had beencovered by very loose stone collapse before theoccurrence of any appreciable weathering, confirmingthat the gate was destroyed immediately after theburning of the city. The surface of the gate passage, which was unpaved, had undergone considerableerosion before the fire, so much so that worn androunded bedrock protruded above it in places. Alongthe south-western side an erosion gully, which hadpartially undermined the passage wall, was filled withstone and the base of the wall was further protected bythe addition of a neat line of stones. There were notraces of wheel ruts. The six-meter width of the passagewas found not to have been restricted. No evidence thatmight have indicated the position of wooden doors wasrecovered and no traces of a walkway or roof over thisportion of the passage were found.
In the Gate Chamber it was possible to removethe uppermost 2.00m of stone fill, some of the stonesbeing of very considerable size. Burning and slots fortimbers indicate the former presence of an elevated
wooden floor or balcony on the south-east side of thechamber. These possibilities will be further investi-gated in a future season.
The Aniconic SteleMost unexpected was the discovery of a built
stepped platform that supported an aniconic stele setinto a socketed topmost step (Fig. 16 and 17). The steleand the top step were neatly carved from a very softlimestone, with the result that both had cracked verybadly during the fire. The stele was removed andawaits the difficult task of conservation and recon-struction in the expedition depot.
The lower steps, not yet fully exposed, wereroughly built of unshaped granite. This monument islocated on the north-eastern side of the wide rearpassage. The stele itself would have faced entrants tothe city, although it would not have been seen from theouter Gate Passage and it would have been shieldedfrom the direct rays of the sun by the tall walling of thechamber. Both the stepped monument and the stele areof well-known Phrygian form, and an associationbetween cult and city gates is not uncommon in theAncient Near East. Examples of other steppedmonuments, on the other hand, are rock-cut rather thanbuilt.
Conservation of the GlacisEssential repairs were undertaken to prevent
further stones from slipping down from the upper partof the glacis. Representative Mehmet Katkat revealedremarkable skills while supervising the operations(Fig. 2).

KERKENES ECO-CENTER
Renewed support from the Australian Embassypermitted progress of a planned program of activitiesduring the summer of 2003. A timber-framed mud-brick unit with a flat mud roof was built on stonefoundations according to traditional techniques (Fig.18). Tinytag dataloggers are used to record temperatureand relative humidity to sample the environmentalperformance of the building at regular intervalsthroughout the seasons. Computer simulations usingEcotect v.5.20 will permit comparisons to be madebetween the performance of various alternativebuilding materials. In the autumn a poster on‘Comparative Studies of Traditional and ContemporaryConstruction in Turkey’ was prepared for the PLEA(Passive and Low Energy Architecture) 2003conference in Santiago, Chile. The ongoing studies arefunded by the British Council Britain-TurkeyPartnerships Programme between the METUDepartment of Architecture, at Ankara and theEnvironment and Energy Studies Programme of theArchitectural Association, London. In addition, a paperentitled ‘The Future of Rural Housing in Turkey: Backto Earth?’ was presented at the ‘Modern Earth 2003’conference in Berlin. Programs launched in 2002
included reuse of grey-water, installation of a simpledrip irrigation scheme, solid waste separation forcomposting and recycling, and a study of alternativematerials for improved environmental performance ofbuildings. The innovative ideas and practices initiatedby the Kerkenes Eco-Center Project, once firmlyestablished, should become self-supporting and runlargely at a local level, by a Village Association, providing a model for the development of similaractivities in rural areas.
