  • continued from our June Issue

One summer day, Molly and Dolly were swimming and tumbling under the sea when they heard a big explosion. Molly swam to the surface, poked her head above the water and heard another explosion. Just then, Dolly poked her head out too. Dolly, did you hear those two explosions? Molly was afraid because she didnt know what caused them. TWO? No, I only heard one explosion, Dolly told Molly. No, there were two. I heard them, Molly insisted. Come on Dolly, we have to gure this out. Molly started swimming toward where the sound came from. They could see a dark object in the distance. It was pointed and looked like it was sticking right out of the ocean. Look Molly! What is it? Dolly was afraid but she was also very curious. It looks like a ship! The ship was sinking and only part of it was sticking out of the water. As they got closer, they saw some land-people in a tiny, yellow boat. They swam over to them to get a better look. The burly man squinted and rubbed his eyes in disbelief, is that a mermaid?! Mermaid? Have you been drinking sea water? The other man asked. It is too a mermaid, you old fool. He started paddling towards Molly, leaning over the edge of the boat, almost falling out!Molly was curious so she swam up to the land-people, but kept a safe distance. Hi, she said to them. Well hello there little mermaid! They were shocked to be talking to a mermaid. Leaning over the side of their raft, they tried to paddle closer to Molly. I heard two explosions, said Molly. Two? He looked surprised. No, there was only one. The two old, gru men looked at each other. Come here. They wanted a better view of the mermaid. Molly backed away. What happened? Molly was really confused. She knew she heard two, but why did everyone else hear only one? This was a mystery that she had to solve. We were on our way to the Island of Serenity when the engine blew and the ol ship sunk. They pointed to the island. Now we are stranded, all for a bunch of books! Books? They nally arrived, but now, the land-people were sinking to the bottom of the ocean too.

Dolly, she whispered, we have to get those books! Molly, Im afraid. Dolly whispered back. Shhhh, Ive got a plan, Molly whispered. Oh no, what are you thinking? Dolly was very afraid. She just wanted to get as far away from the land-people as she could! She knew Molly wasnt about to give up that easily. We have to get going, Molly told the land-people. Good luck getting home! Dolly and Molly swam as fast as they could to the bottom of the sea. As they reached the ship, their excite-ment grew. Entering the ship, they saw hundreds of books! Dolly, which one should we read rst? Molly wanted to get started right away! Molly, what is this one? Dolly didnt understand. Physics, Molly read the title, hmmm, what does it mean? She opened the book and read that physics is the science of matter and energy and their interactions.

Matter? She turned to Dolly, I HAVE to read this one! Whats matter? Molly thought to herself. Matter is just stu. Its anything that you can see and feel. There are dierent branches of physics: Mechanics is the study of motion and forces, acoustics is the study of sound, optics is the study of light, thermodynamics is the study of heat, and many more. Molly will someday read all about the other branches, but for now, she will learn all about mechanics, acoustics, optics and thermodynamics. Energy? That reminds me! If I dont breathe, I wont have any energy. Dolly is a dolphin, and dolphins are mammals. Mammals breathe air, unlike sh that extract air out of the water with their gills. Mermaids can breathe air AND breathe under the water. As Dolly swam towards the surface, bubbles followed her up. Molly watched as the bubbles grew larger and larger, and wondered why.

    by Lisa Ball

    Living LBI Kids

  • Lets see, bubbles. Hmm, as she ipped through the book she saw a picture of a scuba diver. She started to read about water pressure. The water pressure is very strong in deep water and the pressure compresses the bubbles. She tried to explain it to Dolly, but Dolly just couldnt understand it. Dolly, its like this: the bubble is full of air, like a balloon. You know how hard it is to keep a balloon under the water, right? That is because the air is lighter than water, so it oats up! Now I get it! Dolly apped her ns. But why do bubbles get bigger as they go up? The pressure is deeper toward the bottom of the sea because there is a lot of water on top of it. The poor little bubble gets squashed! But, there is less pressure toward the surface, so, the bubble gets bigger as it rises because it is LESS squashed! Molly did her best to explain such a complicated subject. Cool, Im going to blow some bubbles and watch them rise! Dolly started to swim away and Molly followed. Dolly, lets bring these books to my shell. Molly lives in a big scallop shell. It is huge, decorated with pearls and sea glass. She made a soft bed with seaweed and sponge. She thought about the land-children and wished she could bring them the books, but she is not allowed to play with them anymore. Her father would not allow it! Molly, they are not your books, you cant just take them. Dolly was very honest. Dolly, Im not going to keep them, but Im not allowed near the children, remember? She looked at Dolly sadly. Besides, we cant just leave them here, and we cant bring them to the children. Well just hold on to them until we gure out how to get them to the children. Well, I guess thats ok. But we have to tell them. OK, we will. Molly wanted to see the children and this gave her a good reason. We could get Ollie to help! Dolly suggested Ollie because Ollie is an octopus. He has eight arms and can carry a lot of books! Good idea, she said as they swam o. They asked Ollie, and he asked Fred and Fran Fishes, and they asked Sally Seahorse, and she asked Larry Lobster. They all wanted to help Molly. Back and forth they went, carrying all the books. They piled them high next to Mollys shell home. On their last trip back to the ship, they saw scuba divers.Fred and Fran were afraid. What are they? They are land-people who dress like sh! Molly explained. They wear ns on their feet so they can swim fast like a dolphin.Molly, Dolly, the shes Fred and Fran, Ollie the octopus and Larry the lobster all secretly watched the divers. Fred asked Molly why they had big tanks on their backs. Land-people cant breathe underwater like you and I can, Fred. They bring their air with them in those big tanks, and the hose goes to their mouth. When they breathe out, the air forms bubbles that oat to the surface. Molly explained. I can tell you all about bubbles! Dolly exclaimed excitedly. But how do their ns work? Ollie didnt

have ns, he had eight legs instead! When a dolphin pushes its tail downward, the water above its tail moves faster and backward which pushes the dolphin forward. Then, when they move their tail upward, the water below moves faster and backward, and again, the dolphin is pushed forward. Molly told them to watch as she pushed her tail down-ward. They watched as little pieces of seaweed moved faster over her tail and saw her move forward. Im going to try! Dolly pushed her tail down and the same thing happened. What about us? Fred asked. You and Fran are sh, and your tail moves left and right instead of up and down. But, it works the same way. When you push your tail to the left, the water ows faster on the right, but it still pushes you forward. Then, you push your tail to the right, and the water moves faster on the left! Molly laughed. This type of mechanics is known as uid mechanics. Fluids are things that ow, such as water or air. Swimming is like ying. The air, or water, goes over and under a body. A bird ying through the air is a lot like a dolphin swimming in the water. A birds wings go up and down, propelling the bird forward, and its tail makes it y straight. A dolphins tail goes up and down, and its ns keep it going straight. Molly and her friends worried that the divers were going to take all of the books. However, the divers didnt take any; they were looking for something else. They were looking for treasure. Molly already found her treasure! Patiently, they waited for the divers to leave. They knew that the divers could only stay under the water until their air ran out, Dolly especially knew that! She had to go up for air again. While Dolly swam to the surface, the divers spotted Molly. They couldnt nd any treasure, but they found a mermaid. The divers thought that if they captured a mermaid they would become famous. Signaling each other, they grabbed a net and swam over to catch her. Molly was too busy telling Fred and Fran all about physics that she didnt notice the divers sneaking up on her. When she nally did notice, it was too late. The divers threw a big net over her, and dragged her through the water.Snag a copy of our August issue for the conclusion of the Molly Mermaid saga

  • Memoriesby Emily Villafranco

Driving south down the Garden State Parkway, I approach exit 63: Long Beach Island. A burst of warmth prickles through my body, not from the strong heat of the sun, but because I find comfort in going to the place where I grew up. As I approach the bridge to get to the island, I roll down the windows and let in the ocean breeze, because it is a tradition. I smell the salty air and smile while picturing my sisters and I singing at the top of our lungs with the windows open, our brown hair blowing in all directions, and the car radio blasting. I can remember the time when we arrived late at night and my aunt opened the windows as we were driving over the bridge and let in the nights cool air. Her money on the dashboard flew out of the car and we all laughed until tears ran down our faces and we couldnt breathe. That is what Long Beach Island is for me, memories. Everywhere I look, a memory from my childhood is sparked in my mind. These memories make me who I am today and will stay with me forever. As I drive toward my house in Beach Haven, I think back to all of my childhood summers there. This is the place where I grew up. I remember sprinting off the beach when the ice-cream man came and getting yelled at by my cousins for being so indecisive. I remember building car sand castles with my grandpa, and then sitting in them for hours pretending to drive a real car. I remember playing cards and monopoly on hot summer nights after long days at the beach and watching the Yankee games with my grandma. I remember after the lifeguards left, jumping off their stand and feeling like I was a million feet off the ground. These little memories I will always hold so close to my heart and are what make Long Beach Island so special. As I pass a family of four riding bikes down the boulevard, I think back to when I learned to ride my bike for the first time one summer. Long Beach Island is where I experienced many of my firsts. My dad bought me an old-fashioned banana-seat bike that had rainbows and stars. It still hangs in our shed and serves as a reminder of my childhood. When learning to ride, the first few tries I fell and cut my legs up, but my dad taught me to never give up. He kept running up and down the block teaching me until the sun set brilliant orange, pink, and yellow over the distant bay. Long Beach Island is where I learned for the first time that someone close to me had died. I was very young when this happened, and I will never forget it to this day. I was taking a bath with my sister Abigail, when my mom walked in and said, Girls, grandma is in heaven now. I was confused, and didnt

understand, so she told me, Its like in The Lion King when Mufasa is in the stars. I cried with my sister, and wished that my grandma could pinch my cheeks one last time like she always used to. I sat with my sister in the living room, where we looked out the skylight and watched the seagulls fly over us. These experiences made me grow as a person and taught me about life and how quickly it passes. As I pull in the driveway I see the colorful beach bikes against the

fence, rusty and worn out from years of use. I open the gate and remember back to when I was so little that I couldnt even reach the latch. As I walk inside the familiar scent makes me feel at home. I glance at the wall and look at a picture of four girls standing along the ocean, hand in hand. Long Beach Island is where four girls grew up and where four sisters

became best friends. Amanda developed into the leader of the group, the director of the plays we created and the choreographer of the dance to the song Sisters. She was the one we all looked up to. Abby became my sidekick and partner in crime, dressing up in our aunts clothes and shoes while pretending to be teenagers. Molly was the baby who tried so hard to catch up to my sisters and I, following our every move. Sleeping together every night, playing together all day, and enjoying our endless summers together, my sisters and I became inseparable. The bond we created during our childhood summers will stay with us through life. The four of us will remain best friends forever. After reminiscing, I open the glass door, breathe in the salty air, and feel at home. Kicking off my flip-flops, I walk barefoot up to the beach and let my toes touch the hot sand. I see the blue ocean water and waves crashing on the shore. I see a mother and daughter walking along the ocean hand in hand while looking for shells. I see a little boy chasing the seagulls and another building a sand castle. I picture myself when I was younger doing all of these things. The beach allowed me to be a kid for a few months every year I was able to run free and feel as if nothing else in the world mattered. Long Beach Island made summer feel like it lasted an eternity and like life never ended. I sit on the soft, golden sand that warms my body and gives me goose bumps up my arms. I look at the clear, blue sky and watch a rainbow kite fly high, as I used to when I was younger. I know that Long Beach Island will forever be a part of who I am. The childhood memories can never be replaced. Part of me is sad that I cant go back in time and relive all of these carefree and pleasant memories, but I know that Long Beach Island will be a home to which Ill always return.

  • Privileged Pets!Americans spend tens of billions of dollars every

year on pet pampering products and services. From jewels and clothing to groomers and massages, pets can

cost you an arm and a paw.

Not so long ago excessive pet expenses came in the form of ruined shoes, replacing rugs and furry furniture. Add food and

veterinary bills and the costs could make you cringe.

Today, pet luxuries have more than doubled that wallop to the wallet. Pampering your pooch may include a fuzzy sweater or crazy Halloween costume, a wardrobe for all seasons if you will, or it may go so far as a bedazzled collar and a mini mansion WITH heat and air conditioning!

Pets are more well traveled today than ever before with flights now available for nearly the same cost as a ticket of your own. Celebrities have

made it popular to deck out your doggy in fur of all things, buy bedding that matches their own and have mommy/doggy pedicures. Gourmet bakeries

that cater only to animals are springing up all over the country.

As a pet lover you can spoil your buddy from time to time. Fluffy seems to like the bow on her head and Bobo is cool with his bandana.

But there is really no need to shower your pet with expensive thingsfood, comfort and your friendship are what is most important.
