The history of the Klimov Company begins in 1914 with the founding of Rus-sian Renault JSC in Petrograd, which assembled engines and cars. During the following decades, the company gained wide experience in engine design and manufacturing, producing engines for cars, aircraft, motorcycles and tanks. During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), the company produced the most popular Soviet engines: the M-105 (VK-105) family for the airplanes Yak-3, Yak-9, Pe-2, LaGG-3, and others.

During the past 60 years, Klimov’s design division developed engines of the following types:

With the help of PDM it is pos-sible to evaluate the success of new modifications at the initial design stage, thus decreasing expenditures on additional tests of prototypes. In addition to helping with technological efficiency, PDM is a valuable tool for organization efficiency. Development and modern-ization of engines is both expensive and time-consum-ing. It requires consideration of an extensive number of design variants, resulting in steadily escalating volumes of data.

The Klimov Company pays special attention to training and recruiting young engi-neers. We have created a com-prehensive training program, which ranges from teaching and outreach geared toward young students at various high schools to providing excellent post-graduate courses for the most promising graduate students at Klimov’s branch of St. Petersburg State Polytech-nic University. In an effort to increase the expertise of our new employees and their abil-ity to rapidly adapt to the work environment, during their 4th year of university, students join Klimov’s staff as part-time employees.

This provides students with an integrated program of study, scientific research and produc-tion. Through the work-study program, the next generation of Klimov’s designers learn ad-vanced technical skills, creative approaches, and gain the am-bition and know-how to apply the latest scientific research to the design and manufacturing of aircraft power plants.

In 2005, the Klimov Com-pany began to use an in-tegrated system of product engineering data control – PDM (product data manage-ment).

This system enables design en-gineers to organise design data flows (electronic document turnover, calculated models, test results) to develop algo-rithms of different processes. Thanks to PDM, control of the design process is simplified by fifty percents.

A principal component of gas turbine development is the bench test. Bench tests are used to check and confirm the performance of the engine. It is critical to conduct tests at conditions very close to the operation conditions aboard the aircraft.

The experimental base of the Klimov Company includes 70 special test benches and a climatic test bench, which together provide the full suite of necessary experimental and technological tests to assess the performance of individual parts as well as completed assembly units, full-size turbojet, turboshaft and turboprop engines, and helicopter power plants with gearboxes.

The Klimov Company has re-alized several international programs, including:

the installation of Larzac (Snecma) engine on MiG – AT fighter and the flight support;the development and instal-lation of the SMR-95 power system on Super Mirage F-1 and Super Cheetah D-2;the development of RD-93 for the Chinese fighter FC-1 (Program Super-7), the joint project Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group and Mikoyan Design bureau, and others.
