Powerful sealing calculation withonline help on CD-ROM

The many and varied demandsmade on gasketsThe successful operation of agasket depends upon a multiplicity of factors. Many who use static gasketsbelieve that the values quoted for maximum admissible temperature and maximum operating pressure are inherentproperties or characteristics ofgaskets and gasket materials.

Unfortunately, this is not thecase. The maximum temperatures and pressures at which gaskets may beused are influenced by a large number of factors.

Therefore a definite statementof these values for gasket materialis not possible.

temperature (e.g. KLINGERgraphitelaminate or KLINGERtop-chem),especially for steam and/or waterapplications. For discontinuous operations inwater and/or steam applications, we recommend as a general guide asurface pressure of about 30 MPa. In such cases the gasket should beas thin as is practicable.

For reasons of safety, we advise against the re-use ofgaskets.

Important points to be observedThe selection of gaskets requiresexpertise and know-how since evergreater reliability coupled with thelowest possible leakage rates aredemanded of gasket materials.

The exacting demands made onthe tightness of gasket materials (e.g.Tightness class L0.01) mean that withincreasing internal pressure highersurface pressures must be applied tothe gasket.

It must be shown that the flangejoint will tolerate the demands madeon it without being mechanicallyoverloaded. Furthermore, the surfacepressure applied to create the sealshould never fall below the requiredminimum value since this will reducethe life of the gasket. Highly stressed, but not overstressed gaskets have alonger life than understressedgaskets.

If the gasket fitted will besubjected to non-static loading, orwill suffer stress fluctuations duringdiscontinuous operation, it isadvisable to choose a gasket which is not prone to embrittlement with increasing

Maximum gasket pressure inoperating condition σBO inaccordance with DIN 28090

This diagram shows the max.permissible gasket pressure in MPa to be applied as a function of the servicetemperature. The values apply to thestated gasket thicknesses.

Min. gasket pressure σVU fortightness classes L = 1.0, L = 0.1and L = 0.01 in accordance withDIN 28090

This diagram shows the min. gasket pressure necessary to achievethe tightness for the above tightnessclasses at room temperature. Tightnessclass L= 0.1 allows a max. leakage of 1 mg nitrogen per second per meter of gasket length (mg/s m). The curves are shown for the standardthickness material.

Minimum gasket pressure σBU fortightness class L= 0.1

This three-dimensional diagramdescribes the behaviour of the gasketmaterial with respect to the requiredminimum gasket pressure for acomplete temperature range at 2 mmthickness. It clearly shows that therequired minimum load decreases atmedium and higher temperatures –the gasket will seal at lower surfaceloads under these conditions.

.

*Gaskets according to DIN 2690 are only standardised up to PN 40 and gasket thickness 2 mm.

So why does Klinger provide pT diagrams? For the reasons given the pT diagramis not infallible: it serves as a roughguide for the end user who often hasonly the operating temperatures andpressures to go on.

Additional stresses such asgreatly fluctuating load may significantly affect whether a gasket is suitable for the application.

Resistance to media must betaken into account in every case.

If your operating temperaturesand pressures fall within this field, a technical examination is normallyunnecessary.

If your operating temperaturesand pressures are within this field,a technical examination isrecommended.

If your operating temperaturesand pressures are within this ”open”field, a technical examination isalways necessary.

Klinger cold/hot compressionWith this test method developed byKlinger you can evaluate the cold/hotcompression of a gasket in cold andhot condition.

Unlike the method acc. to DIN52913 and BS 7531, the surface loadis kept constant during the completetest so that the gasket is exposed tomuch tougher conditions.

The thickness decrease at anambient temperature of 23°C and atheating up to 200°C is measured.

The indicated thickness decreaseat 200°C refers to the thickness obtained after loading at 23°C.

Dimensions of the standard sheetsSizes:1,000 x 1,500 mm, 1,500 x 2,000 mm.Thicknesses:0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm,2.0 mm, 3.0 mm;other thicknesses on request.Tolerances:thickness ±10%, length ± 50 mm,width ± 50 mm

Function and durabilityThe performance and life of KLINGERgaskets depend in large measure onproper storage and fitting, factorsbeyond the manufactor’s control. Wecan, however, vouch for the excellentquality of our products.

With this in mind, please alsoobserve our installation instructions.

Tests and approvalsTÜV Poland.BS 7531 Grade X.TA-Luft (Clean Air) approval, tested in accordance with VDI 2440 at 150°C.

Rings and other finished gasketsThese gaskets are available in anysize and corresponding sheetthicknesses, also edged and PTFE-covered.

SurfacesThe standard surface finish of thematerial is such that the surface hasan extremely low adhesion. Onrequest, graphite facings and othersurface finishes on one or both sidesare also available.
