hopefully are able to inspire in others, a different attitude by their powerful examples, whose optimism and tireless efforts belie how frustrating and slow constructive change can prove to be, and who continue on with good cheer and great hope that at least some of these times, herculean efforts will prove successful and productive, no matter how long it might take, and how much time and energy need to be expended. Both in terms of significant service to KMS as well as in each of their areas of expertise and idealistic conviction, peace in the Middle East, assisting parents desperately wishing to adopt children and understanding and using the political process for our general betterment, David, Varda and Alec truly “walk the walk” in terms of demonstrating how to determinedly not allow the “Amalek” within each of our minds to discourage us and cause us to throw up our hands in frustration and defeat. I deeply appreciate their friendship and their personal examples, and I hope that not only Yonatan, Shai, Amailia, Uriel and Thea, who have already begun to demonstrate their commitment to working on behalf of the greater community, will be further energized by the wonderful examples of David, Varda and Alec, but that we all can take heart and recommit ourselves to working on behalf of the greater good.

To David and Varda, Tani Josh and Eliana, And Alec and Lisa, Aviva, Ariana, Ayden and Aryeh, And Yonatan, Shai, Amalia, Uriel and Thea,

Mazal Tov on your well-deserved honors, and may you and all whom you love enjoy health, spiritual and professional fulfillment, and great joy in all you do.

KMS Dinner 5774 Honoring David and Varda Makovsky,

Alec Stone, and

Yonatan Abrams, Shai Brown, Amalia Diament, Uriel Levitt, and Thea Orenstein

One of the central themes on Purim is for us to consciously reject Amalek and fight off the threats that he eternally poses for the Jewish people. It is not a coincidence that Parashat Zachor, when we read from the Tora the verses describing our obligation never to forget Amalek during the course of trying to eradicate this people’s memory, takes place every year on the Shabbat preceding Purim. The villain of the Haggada, Haman ben Hamdata, is thought to be at least the spiritual if not the actual biological embodiment of Amalek. Consequently, when the name of Haman is blotted out during the public reading of Megillat Esther, it is not only a fulfillment of the general sentiment expressed in the biblical verse, (Mishlei 10:7) “The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; but the name of the wicked shall rot”, but a physical and personal response to the Commandment (Devarim 25:9) “…Thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven…”.

R. Adin Steinsaltz has written that Amalek represents not only the very real external threat that the Jewish people confront in every generation, but that there is an internal Amalek that plagues each of us as well:

…The numerical equivalent of “Amalek” is the same as the word “Safek” (doubt), alluding to its inner nature. Legitimate doubt—when there is something that a person does not know conclusively—is removed when the matter in question becomes clear and when he deals with the problems that it raises. Amalek seeks to encourage and perpetuate doubt, and thus attempts to halt any effort to deal with doubt and resolve it…”

When one wonders why more people are not actively working to better their home institutions, communities, nation and even their world, we could point to a ubiquitous “Amalek” who strives to stir up doubts in each of our minds regarding whether anything really can be done and therefore why should we waste our time “tilting at windmills”? After all, there are so many family responsibilities, challenges of day-to-day living, religious obligations, that little time is left for pursuing higher goals and pursuits. But there are those who represent and

Diament and Shanna and Gary Winters, as well as journal chairs Carrie and Jeffrey Gluck and Jennifer and Joel Tabin. Everyone involved in this year’s banquet has not only worked very hard but has shown tremendous willingness to try new ideas and approaches.

Thanks also are due to our VP for Development Joel Tabin for his dedication and hard work in helping to make this important event come together. And, acharon acharon haviv, thank you to our office staff – our Executive Director Allison Newfeld who, together with Sheridan Sassoon – put in many hours of work to make this event a success.Enjoy the evening and thank you for your support of KMS.

President, KMS

President’s MessageWelcome to KMS’ 24th Annual Banquet. I am delighted that you are joining us. The KMS Banquet is a unique opportunity to gather together as a community and celebrate our many achievements. The Banquet also allows us to honor individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty by stepping up and giving of their time and talents to help make KMS the unique shul that it is.

Varda and David Makovsky have both have been extremely active members of KMS for years. Varda served on KMS’s Executive Committee as VP for Israel Programs, co-chaired the first KMS Run for Israel, and serves on the shul’s Chesed Committee, coordinating the delivery of shul meals for bereaved families.

David served both on the KMS board of directors and subsequently as Vice-President for Limud Torah/Education. In this role, he organized visits by nationally and internationally renowned scholars in residence to KMS and sponsorship of these programs by individual KMS members.

This year’s Community Service honoree, Alec Stone, has worked tirelessly over the course of many years to serve as a liaison between the Jewish and secular communities of Kemp Mill and Montgomery County at large. He served on the KMS Board as a director then treasurer, as the Sulam board chair, and three terms as a member of the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council. He con-tinues to serve on the Federation’s Network Board and as vice chair of MJBHA’s External Affairs Committee.

He has also served as president of the Kemp Mill Civic Association, chair of the Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board, member of the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee, and a member on the Montgomery County Grants Commission.

We are all honored to count David, Varda and Alec as our friends and neighbors.

Our youth honorees – Yonatan Abrams, Yishai Brown, Amalia Diament, Uriel Levitt, Thea Ornstein – have all shown outstanding commitment to KMS over the past several years. Each has taken on a variety of responsibilities and has demonstrated real leadership skills. We should all take pride in their accomplishments and will look forward to seeing them grow and develop even further as they go out into the world beyond Kemp Mill.

This year’s banquet did not come together on its own -- it is the result of the hard work of many people. I would like to thank our banquet chairs, Elizabeth and Nathan

period. He received his M.A. in Middle East Studies from Harvard University.

David served both on the KMS board of directors and subsequently as vice-president for Limud Torah/Education as part of the KMS Executive Committee. In his role as VP education between 2011-2013, he sought to bring nationally and internationally renowned scholars in residence to KMS - sponsored by KMS individual members. An-other priority was creating a weekly Daf Yomi class at KMS which continues. For the last thirteen years, David also headed the Melave Malke program designed to attract stimulating speakers/authors to KMS.

Varda and David are the proud parents of Tani, 15, Josh, 11, and Elliana 11. All three attend the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy.

Varda & David MakovskyVarda Makovsky is the Director of Post-Adoption and Family Sevices at the Barker Foundation, a Bethesda-based adoption agency. In this capacity, she provides ongoing support and counseling to adoptive and birth families, coordinates educational programs and serves as the agency’s confidential intermediary between birth and adoptive families. Varda grew up in the Boston area and attended NYU for her undergraduate and MBA degrees, and worked in New York and Israel for over a decade as a management consultant on human resources and executive compensation issues. After she and David moved to the Washington DC area, she decided to transition to a social work career and earned an MSW from the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work.

Varda served on KMS’s Executive Committee as VP for Israel Programs, co-chaired the first KMS Run for Israel, served on the shul Chesed Committee, and coordinates the delivery of shul meals for families sitting shiva.

David Makovsky is a senior advisor to the Special Envoy for Israel-Palestinian Negotiations at the Department of State. He is on leave from The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, where he is a Ziegler Distinguished Fellow and Director of the Project on the Middle East Peace Process. He is also an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul A. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where he teaches about issues related to the Arab-Israel conflict. He has written widely on Arab-Israel affairs, including penning two books, and many monographs. He has testified several times in the US Congress before both the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs Committees. He is a former executive editor of the Jerusalem Post, where he also served the former diplomatic correspondent and held the same position at Haaretz. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, David studied at Yeshivat Hakotel and Yeshivat Har Etzion. He received a B.A. from Columbia University. As a Jewish student activist largely focused on the struggle for Soviet and Ethiopian Jews, David headed different student organization culminating with him being the chairman of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) for a three year

bonds between its leaders and county and state elected officials.

Thanks to meetings and events organized by Alec, area politicians have gained a better understanding of the extraordinary work performed by Jewish groups such as Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington and the Kemp Mill Community Mikvah. Alec’s skilled interaction with Maryland powerbrokers increased their understanding of the agunah problem, building a strong Hillel at the University of Maryland and The George Washington University, and continued support for Israel.

Included among the benefits of Alec’s organizational expertise and leadership is the successful purchase of the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy, a state grant to repave the school’s track, and a county government stipend to build an ADA compliant ramp to the school’s field.

Alec holds a BA in history from Memphis State University, a Masters in Public Administration from Southern Illinois University’s Graduate School of Public Affairs, and a Masters in Political Management from The George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management.

He has worked two decades in Washington as an advocate for healthcare nonprofit organizations, primarily in medical research fields, and is currently Health Policy director for the Oncology Nursing Society.

Alec and Lisa are most proud, however, of their children, Aviva, 19, attending The George Washington University; Arianna, 15, a sophomore; Ayden, 12, in the seventh grade; and Aryeh, 10, a fourth grader, all at the Berman Hebrew Academy.

Alec StoneGrowing up in a Deep South home where the extended family was active in B’nai Brith, Hadassah, the JCC, local day schools and synagogues, Alec was naturally drawn to Jewish social service organizations. As members of a small, yet energetic religious minority in Memphis, Tennessee, he and his sister, Leah, developed a religious identity by being immersed in Jewish youth activities. He concedes he spent nearly as many days traveling the country as NCSY’s national president as attending his senior high school classes before studying at Yeshiva University.

Moving to White Oak in 1995, Alec and wife Lisa joined friends and dedicated their efforts to the Young Israel of White Oak (YIWO) Synagogue. Alec served as the shul president, but he credits Lisa with handling most of the hard work. For their efforts, the National Council of Young Israel presented them with the Shofar Award in 1998.

Upon settling in Kemp Mill in 1999, Alec increased his dedication to Jewish causes. He served on the KMS Board as a director then treasurer, as the Sulam board chair, and three terms as a member of the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council. He continues to serve on the Federation’s Network Board, and as vice chair of MJBHA’s External Affairs Committee.

Alec’s commitment to service reaches broadly into the secular community with terms as president of the Kemp Mill Civic Association, chair of the Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board, member of the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee, and a member on the Montgomery County Grants Commission.

We often find Alec among the last to leave the Shabbat kiddish, as he is engaged in conversations about local and state politics. These are the connections that have brought recognition to the Kemp Mill community and forged the strong

Yishai BrownYishai Etan Brown was born in Boston as a Patriots’ fan from the womb. Shai is a great student who likes to unwind with cereal, his dogs, his couch and then his bed. Tostitos and salsa are a good accompaniment to football. Shai is a solid layner, a great biker, and a good friend who follows the rabbinic adage: “Silence is a fence to wisdom.” Shai has been a leader in the youth minyan and a steady gabbai and ba’al korei who currently organizes the layning every week.

He towers over the rest of the family but always carries himself with humility. His favorite movie is “Fiddler on the Roof.” He is looking forward to learning in Israel next year and then going to college. Shai is a natural leader, and as he is the only Brown child born in America, he is the only one qualified to become the president of the United States. No pressure. As his name suggests, he is a real gift.

Amalia DiamentAmalia has been a member of KMS since age two, when she moved to Kemp Mill with her family. She greatly appreciates the formal and informal education and strong Jewish values she’s received at KMS and cherishes the wonderful friends she has in thecommunity.

Amalia has been a leader in the Bnei Akiva Silver Spring youth movement, serving as a madricha in 9th and 10th grade, Senior Tzevet in 11th grade, and as a Rosh Sniff during her final year in high school this year. Under

her leadership -- and with her years of hard work and creative ideas -- Bnei Akiva has successfully run an array of educational and fun activities and shabbatonim. The community’s Bnei Akiva sniff continues to thrive and has grown to be an integral part of KMS youth activities, attracting up to eighty chanichim, and forty talented madrichim.

When she is not busy with Bnei Akiva, Amalia, a senior at the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy, enjoys singing in the MJBHA Girls’ Choir, creating ceramic pieces, running on the varsity track team, and editing pages of the yearbook. She also, on occasion, enjoys spending time with her three brothers.

Yonatan AbramsYonatan has enjoyed leading the 3rd through 5th grade Junior Congregation at KMS. He often serves as shaliach tzibbur at the ruach minyan on Friday night and can be counted on to help out with laining at the youth minyan on Shabbat morning.

A senior at MJBHA, Yonatan is head of tech for the school plays and captain of the varsity soccer and volleyball teams; he also writes a column called “Above the Highway” for the upper school newspaper Hamodiya. In his free time, Yonatan enjoys playing

soulful tunes on the saxophone and singing through his diverse personal playlist. Other favored home activities include debating with his parents and convincing his little brother why he should be allowed to give him a “5-star.” Yonatan’s favorite song is “Stairway to Heaven,” his favorite movie is “Goodfellas,” and his favorite word is “shteigin!”

After graduation, Yonatan plans to spend a year shteigin at a yeshiva in Israel, and then claim his spot at George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Uriel LevittUriel has been a member of KMS since his family moved to the community in 1998, when he was two. He started coming to shul for Shabbat regularly when the KMS special needs committee offered to pair him with “buddies” to help him attend Shabbat morning groups with his peers. The year before his Bar Mitzvah, Uriel started attending the Youth Minyan, where he was immediately embraced by the shul’s teens. The minyan gave Uriel frequent opportunities to practice b’tzibur as he prepared for his Bar Mitzvah. Even Aleinu -- usually recited

silently in the Youth Minyan -- was sung out loud over several months to help Uriel prepare. On the big day, the Youth Minyan -- Uriel’s community of friends among whom he felt most comfortable -- ran the tefila in the main sanctuary. Since then, Uriel has become an integral part of the Youth Minyan. He loves getting Aliyot and singing along with the chazan when the Torah is taken out of the Aron, and he enjoys finishing off davening with his cousins and brother.

He gives frequent Divrei Torah on Shabbat and Yom Tov -- when Uriel speaks you can hear a pin drop -- and once finished enjoys rounds of high fives, first-bumps and handshakes from all the boys. Most important to Uriel, he is a regular fixture at the Bima along with Rabbi Moses and the other Gabaim. He covers and uncovers the Torah, hands out the Yad, and calls out “Kadish!” right on cue. Asked to name his favorite thing about KMS, Uriel is quick to respond, “Being a Gabai!”

Thea OrnsteinAs the first KMS Youth Chesed Organizer, Thea has

led many successful community activities during the past four years and has given teens the opportunity to incorporate chesed into their lives. Her most successful project has been the building and taking down of sukkot for those in the community that require assistance, enabling more than 20 KMS families to celebrate the holiday in their own, well-built sukkah.

In addition, Thea has recently started organizing donation drives and trips to the local Food Kitchen,

Shepherd’s Table, extending Youth Minyan Chesed into the local community at large. When Thea is not sponsoring her own Chesed Projects, she is the go-to girl for any adult trying to find volunteers for various community projects.

Thea not only has been a valuable member of the Youth Minyan, but a devoted group leader for the past four years. Whether she is ordering prizes from Oriental Trading, playing games, or davening with the kids during groups, she always has a smile on her face. For the past two years, Thea has been a regular participant in Rabbi Bieler’s weekly high school Mishmar class.

When she is not busy helping out her community, Thea, a senior at Northwood High School, has enjoyed participating in her school’s dance program, being a lawyer on the mock trial team, skating at Wheaton Ice arena, and earning a ham radio operator’s license.

Thea thanks everyone who has helped her become a successful leader within and beyond the KMS community service and will greatly miss being part of the KMS youth society.

Dear Friends, For as long as I have been in public service, I have always valued the contributions of active and informed citizens who want to improve the quality of life for their families, neighbors, friends, and community. Your Community Service Award winner, Alec Stone, has been at the forefront of efforts to maintain the quality our public services and bringing government closer to the people. Alec has shown his commitment to Montgomery County through his service on the Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board, the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and the Kemp Mill Civic Association. I have always found that him to be a valuable source of knowledge and a force for getting things done on behalf of our community. I also want to congratulate honorees Varda and David Makovsky, who have helped make Kemp Mill Synagogue, and indeed the Kemp Mill community, into the thriving example of civic participation and community service, for which it is known throughout Montgomery County. Kemp Mill Synagogue’s commitment to education is second to none--as evidenced by the outstanding work of youth honorees Yonatan Abrams, Shai Brown, Amalia Diament, Uriel Levitt, and Thea Ornstein. Congratulations again to Alec Stone and all of the honorees at the Kemp Mill Synagogue 2014 Banquet.

Sincerely,

Nancy Navarro Councilmember, District 4

Our dearest Amalia,

When you joined the KMS community you were just two years old and we remember attending KMS dinners (when we could get a babysitter) and being so impressed by the accomplishments of the youth honorees. It is hard to believe that it is now your turn, and, Amalia, we couldn't be prouder.

You have grown (far too quickly!) into a remarkable young woman who has already contributed so much to your community, as an activist, and as a role model to those you lead. We are so impressed with what you have achieved, and what we know you will strive for as your life's journey continues. We thank Hashem every day for the gift that is our beautiful Amalia Tova.

Dear David and Varda,

Mazal tov on this well deserved award. Yale and David go way back, toat-tending yeshiva in Israel together. Yale still remembers fondly David's spot on Anwar Sadat and Yasir Arafat imitations that David would entertain his friends with in the old days, and will still do, if you ask him nicely.

May you both continue to go from strength to strength.
