I am honored to have this opportunity to introduce Keimyung University to you through this new brochure published in 2012 as we mark the 58th anniversary of Keimyung’s founding. The intervening years have seen the University grow from such humble beginnings as seeds in the minds of our Christian founders who realized the necessity of a new institute of higher learning in the city of Daegu, which had just begun its recovery from war, to the internationally renowned university Keimyung is today.

Adorning the wall facing Dongsan Library’s main entrance and ever reminding us of our permanent and most important mission is the Latin expression “Bonus Intra Melior Exi” which translates as "enter good; leave better." Keimyung University, with its deep commitment to academic excellence and ethical scholarship, is a place of learning where students of all ages enter good and leave better as creative global citizens.

The seeds that were planted upon our founding in 1954 have indeed borne great fruit; nevertheless, if we are to ensure that future students leave Keimyung better than when they first grace our halls, the planting of new seeds must remain our never-ending obligation. It is my hope that as you browse this brochure or visit our campus you will see not only the fruits of previously planted seeds, but also more recently planted seeds taking root and blossoming as we continue writing this still early history of Keimyung University.

President’s Greeting

Synn Ilhi

Daemyung Campus

When Keimyung was founded in 1954, the original Daemyung Campus was located on a rocky hill far away from the inhabited center of the city. The hill was known in the vernacular simply as the rock mountain. It was indeed a hill of shale rocks on which certainly no trees or bushes, except for a few strains of the most tenacious weeds, could take root. A rock mound monument on the original campus is both a remnant of that original landscape and a humble reminder of our beginnings.

Dongsan Campus: A Place of Compassionate Healing

Dongsan Medical Center was established in 1899 by American Presbyterian missionary Woodbridge O. Johnson. The center began as a small western clinic named Jaejungwon (Salvation Hospital) and introduced western medicine to Daegu for the first time.

Having adopted treatment, education, research, and missionary work as its mission, the center has grown into a large medical facility, operating the School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, Daegu Dongsan Hospital, and Gyeongju Dongsan Hospital. In total the center is home to 26 clinical departments and 1,900 faculty and staff.

The center’s most outstanding achievement is its medical missionary work managed by the Dongsan Medical Mission and Welfare Association, to which all faculty and staff belong. The association facilitates yearly medical trips to Almaty Dongsan Hospital in Kazakhstan. The association also provides support for the management of Dongsan Special Medical Clinic in Nepal and CHDP-K Hospital in Bangladesh as well as medical support to regions of Kyrgyzstan, China, and Ethiopia.

A new era for Keimyung University and Dongsan Medical Center, Keimyung’s affiliated hospital, is set to begin in 2014 when Dongsan Medical Center completes its move to new state-of-the-art premises on Keimyung’s Seongseo Campus. The new Dongsan Medical Center will house more than 1,000 beds and complete Keimyung University’s medical cluster which now includes the School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, and the College of Pharmacy.

Seongseo Campus

The development of Keimyung University acquired a new dimension in the early 1980s when it added to its existing two campuses a new campus built on 1.6 million sq. meters in the west of Daegu. Now considered one of the most beautiful campuses in Korea, Seongseo Campus is often utilized by television and movie production companies for location filming. With world-class facilities including Hengso Museum, Keimyung Art Center, and Keimyung Hanhak-chon, Keimyung University’s Seongseo Campus provides the perfect environment in which you can advance your studies while exploring the culture, history, and language of Korea.

Internationalization

Keimyung University, with its 270 exchange agreements with universities and organizations in 49 countries, can justly claim to be a leader in the field of internationalization. In addition to those agreements, around 5,000 students enroll in more than 400 courses taught in English every semester by our Korean faculty fluent in English and our growing 125-strong international faculty.

Furthering internationalization efforts that directly benefit domestic students are KELI House, the first English-only dormitory in the region; C-CLIK House, a Chinese-language dormitory; and JIKU House, a Japanese-language dormitory. These facilities not only hone the language skills of students, but pave the way for them to make the most of their overseas study sojourns to our partner universities worldwide.

Students from France’s European Institute of Technology (EPITECH) can elect to spend their compulsory year abroad at Keimyung. Thirteen EPITECH students arrived in August 2011 to begin their year abroad. Keimyung will welcome 32 more in 2012.

Giving Back to the Community

Keimyung CaritasSince its foundation in 1954, Keimyung University has received substantial support from charitable donors. The Keimyung Caritas foundation was established in 2004 to honor the intention of those charitable acts by donating to those in need. Staff and faculty can join Keimyung Caritas by contributing 1% of their basic monthly salary. The funds are used to help disadvantaged members of the community and assist in reconstruction efforts after natural disasters worldwide.

One way in which Keimyung Caritas helps local citizens is through the annual Kimchi-Making Day event in which Keimyung students, staff, faculty, and local citizens spend the day making kimchi destined for the community’s less fortunate members.

International VolunteersKeimyung University’s International Volunteer Group was created in 2002 with the goal of nurturing in students a pioneering and volunteering spirit. Utilizing field trips to broaden students’ cultural experiences, the program has been a success since it began.

The first volunteers ventured to China’s Heibei Province in 2002 where they planted 10,000 thuja trees to help alleviate the problems caused by China’s yellow dust. Countries visited since then include Nepal, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Mongolia where classrooms and bathrooms have been built and repaired and improvements made to local water supply facilities. Each year around 150 students participate in the program gaining meaningful life-changing experiences.

Buddy Program

The Buddy Program matches new international students with domestic students to initiate friendships and begin cultural exchanges. The program aims to minimize feelings of loneliness and isolation amongst international students thereby helping them adapt to their new life. Every semester welcome and farewell parties for international students and their buddies are held at the International Lounge to help them break the ice and then to formerly say farewell until the next time they meet.

“Friends for life!”

UNESCO’s Cross-Cultural Awareness Program (CCAP)

Keimyung University has been certified as a CCAP collaborative organization by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO since 2005. Under the program international students are invited into local schools to introduce their home cultures to Korean students. There is no better way to raise awareness of your home country and break down cultural stereotypes than by giving local students a glimpse into life in your home country by sharing your culture, your passions, and your interests. ■ Website: http://ccap.unesco.or.kr■ Keimyung CCAP: facebook.com/kmuccap■ Email: [email protected]

Keimyung International Sarang Scholarship (KISS)“The KISS scholarship aims at providing education by helping recipients achieve their goals in life regardless of their financial difficulties or background problems. The scholarship covers tuition fees, dormitory fees, cafeteria fees, and general living expenses leaving KISS students with nothing to worry about

besides their studies.”

Tulani W. Mukarati, Zimbabwe

Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP)“Coming to Korea was the first experience I have had living abroad. I had so many opportunities to make new friends and learn not only about Korean culture, but also about the different cultures of my fellow international students. I have attended three universities and this is the first I have seen that has a designated place for Muslims to pray.”

Nihat Khalilzade Lazim, Azerbaijan

Cross-Cultural Awareness Program (CCAP)“The main reason I participate in CCAP is that the program is so much fun. Giving lectures about my own culture to elementary, middle, and high school students is a great way to meet people of different ages while learning about the Korean educational system. The students are so adorable and are the nicest audience to practice one’s presentation skills in front of. Cultural exchange is the perfect way to describe CCAP because even though I’m giving the lecture, I feel I’m learning more than the students.”

Jenni Maenpaa, Finland

Keimyung Adams College (KAC)“I came to South Korea to do my bachelor's degree on the recommendation of a friend who had nothing but good things to say about studying in Korea. Since I started, I have found it challenging, fascinating, and really worthwhile. The faculty is well qualified to teach native speakers of English, and they have been excellent to me, as have my fellow students. I feel doing my International Relations degree here gives me unique advantages as I can study from a different angle here in Asia while receiving first class instruction from North American, European, and Korean professors.”

George English, England

Buddy Program“I think the Buddy Program is a fantastic program. Personally, I’m not good at Korean and I had a lot of worries concerning how I could live a normal life in Korea. My buddy always solves any problems I have, and my buddy easily helps me if I need to know a new Korean word. On weekends we eat lunch together, go downtown together, and shop together. We share a lot of good times which are beneficial for the both of us. Thanks to my buddy I don’t need to worry about my life in Korea. The Buddy Program is a very necessary and useful program.”

Sae Narahara, Japan

Korean Government Exchange Student Scholarship Program“What can I say about the Korean Government Exchange Student Scholarship Program? First of all it is a great honor to be chosen by the Korean government to study and obtain knowledge in this country. The program will cover your tuition fees, provide you with opportunities to discover and learn more about Korea’s traditions and history, and provide a scholarship that will free you from worrying about your expenses. I can add that like all things at Keimyung University this program works accurately and efficiently. The people who are going to work with you here are so polite and tactful you will never feel uncomfortable. In fact the coordinator of this program is such a striking person that you can consider him a friend and a trusted adviser even before you come to Korea.I wish all future exchange students the best of luck. The time you spend here will be exciting, fascinating, and unforgettable.”

Ibragimova Shakhnoza, Uzbekistan

International Lounge“When I was in university in China, there was a place called English Corner. Because it was outdoors, students could only practice their English by standing and talking; sometimes holding umbrellas when it rained. In the lounge you never face such problems. The lounge offers the best environment for your second language study and practice. It has all kinds of facilities for you to relax such as music, daily movies, board games, books, live music, and of course friends.”

Hu Xiaoqing, China

Global MBA (GMBA)“Life as a graduate student is completely different from undergraduate life. You have the opportunity to dig deeper into your interests and surround yourself with people that share the same passions. You learn from professors who have worked in the field you are striving towards, and you finally begin to feel like an expert in your field. Graduate school is a time where you truly find yourself. You begin to believe in your talents and realize that your hard work will pay off at Keimyung.”

Shane Rus Chan, Philippines

PhD Program (Marketing)“What makes the PhD program here distinguished is that it is equally profoundly rooted in both theory and practice. The driving philosophy behind the PhD program is an insistence that theory is most powerful when utilized in real-world applications. Keimyung University is a special place to be a student for all the right reasons: terrific faculty, constant connections to practitioners, and access to Keimyung’s vast facilities. It's a beautiful and inspiring environment to grow your ideas.”

Gilroy Middleton, Belize

Exchange Student“The average student exchange experience involves leaving your home, family, friends, and the familiarity of your surroundings to travel to a foreign land. Yes, you will make new friends, take new classes, eat new food, and possibly begin the journey of learning a new language; in the end, exchange is a wholly personal experience. It is a chance to break free from the normal life you have created – a chance to become immersed in a new culture and let the language, ways of l iving, and customs become a part of your life. I have found KMU to be the perfect place to facilitate such an experience – an unequivocal experience that can profoundly enrich your knowledge and alter your future.”

Joe Perotti, USA

Korean Language And Culture Center (KLCC)“KLCC is one of the best choices for anyone wanting to learn Korean in Korea. The quality of education is high with an excellent group of experienced native teachers, the latest technologies, and great resources for every level. The campus lies in a magnificent location surrounded by nature and is adorned with all kinds of facilities making it easy to study and live a healthy life. I would recommend and encourage anyone to join us and enjoy this extraordinary experience.”

Carlos Capuz, Spain

Cross-Cultural Awareness Program (CCAP)“Before doing CCAP, I thought that nobody would want to know about my country, but when I participated I realized that Korean students were in fact very interested. Sharing my culture with Korean students helped them to realize the positive aspects of Afghanistan. I enjoyed the benefits of gaining valuable life experiences while absorbing the fascinating local culture by interacting with local children.”

Ahmed Seyar Raz, Afghanistan
