A pril is Israel month. KLS will be hosting Israeli themed
events throughout the month. Of course that means
falafel, the hora and Am Yisrael Chai. But it’s even better than
that—we have a speaker who worked for 25 years for the British
Council in Israel, a professional dance teacher and a film
screening. Check out page 4 for the full programme.
Also this month, the weather is due to improve (well it can
hardly get worse), so it’s a good time to venture into the great
outdoors. Why not come along for a stroll through the Surrey
countryside with fellow KLS ramblers (see page 5).
PAGE 2 KINGSTON NEWS BULLETIN
Dear KLS member
T his is my 28th Word from the
Chair. My words are
Programme (of events at KLS) and
People. (“The two Ps.”) And if you
look carefully, you will find seven or
eight Fs.
People
When I was asked to become
Chair of KLS it was in a different
world. At that time we had an
administrator who had been
with us for seven years. Our
caretaker and cleaner had been
with us for 19 years and had
gone to school in our building. (It
was originally a school.) Our formal
music director had been with us for
13 years. They have all left since I
became Chair. Was it something I
said?
We now have a synagogue co-
ordinator and have separated and
clarified the cleaning and
caretaking roles. We are also
recruiting a part time Director of
Music to cover formal and informal
music – choral services, family
services, religion school and music
generally.
People matter. We aim to be a
good employer, to define roles
whilst leaving room for creativity
and to support our staff. Our
recruitment aims to get the best
available people we can afford. And
to do so in a transparent and fair
way.
Programme (of events)
I mentioned in the Annual Report
for 2012 that we aimed to develop
an indicative annual KLS events
programme. Rabbi Charley has
been working on this whilst on
maternity leave and she and Helen
in the Office are now able to plan
and present an exciting
programme.
For example: the service on Friday
19 April includes a discussion on
Liberal Judaism’s attitudes to Israel.
There’s a Chavurah “bring
and share” supper with
Simon Kay on the 5 April and
a film and discussion on 16
April. And a series of topical
talks and discussions.
Our offerings – “ROSE” (Religion,
Outreach, Social and Education) –
have something for everyone. Do
try and sample our different events.
It’s all included in your
membership. Some you will like;
others may not be for you. But it’s a
great way to find out for yourself
and make new friends. How about
making a resolution to try two new
things at KLS in the next three
months?
To stimulate your appetite here are
some of the offerings that that I
have particularly enjoyed over the
past year.
Religion – faith and family
• The children’s informal Purim
event with religion, games, food
and socialising
• The KLS Chanukah Panto. Oh yes
I did!
• The Communal Seder with
service, spectacle, food and fun
• The Kabbalat Torah service with
four leading KLS yoofs
• The Service for Richard Pilliner.
Was it his swan song or his
cygnature tune?
• High Holy Day services, with
1,000 attendances, led by a very
pregnant rabbi

• Our interfaith work is regarded
as outstanding and has been
recognised by the Mayor of
Kingston’s community awards to
Judy Thwaites and Fleur Standring
• The various presentations and
discussions on Israel
• KLS used as a polling station.
That’s getting paid for outreach!
• A new Jewish school in the area
• KLS representation on the Board
of Deputies (Rabbi Janet Darley)
Social – fellowship, fun, funds, food
• Doroteinu Annual lunch. Great
food and a member of Kingston
Orthodox shul as guest speaker
• The Hebrew café. (What’s a
Jewish balanced diet? A cream
cheese and salmon bagel in one
hand, and a cream cheese and
salmon bagel in the other hand.)
• Krav Maga (Israeli self defence)
has now been going for a year
• Table tennis, revamped Judaica
shop, informal tea and chats
Education - future
• The improved style and
curriculum of our religion
school, under Ben Baginsky
• The buzz, chat, atmosphere on
busy KLS Saturday mornings

• The development of a discussion
group and book club

bananas are left here in this
vehicle over night”

“If you want to Romania you must

Said by a participant in a discussion on
tourism. (Say it aloud!)
And finally
“What’s the most important lesson
you have learnt about money?”
Reply: “I want to use my comedy
to break down negative Jewish
stereotypes, because I hear there’s
a lot of money in that..”

KLS membership
includes free use of the
Norman Fletcher Jones
Hall for communal
events. So if you have
a bar/bat mitzvah, for
example, use of the
hall for Kiddush is
included.
Recently we have been
asked to make the hall
available for private
functions, where the organisers
want exclusive use and invite their
own friends. We make a charge in
which benefits KLS.
The hire includes use
of the hall (pictured
left), kitchen, parking
etc.
There is a significant
amount of space
available and it is
suitable for events
such as children’s
parties, receptions
and so on.
Please contact Helen for details of
prices and terms and conditions.

Israeli Chavurah Supper
Following on from the lively chavurah held last month this
chavurah promises to be equally entertaining. Not only will
we have a short Israeli themed service, with wonderful music
from Tammy Rich but we will have fascinating speaker in
Simon Kay. Simon has recently returned from a job as the
Director of the British Council in Israel. Read an interview
with him here in HaAretz www.haaretz.com/weekend/anglo-
file/cultural-wanderlust-1.349921
Come and hear more about his experiences and perceptions about life in Israel. Promises to be a
lively and thoughtful discussion.
Please bring a vegetarian/fish plated meal.
Shabbat Olam: Israel
As usual our Shabbat Olam features a wonderful combination
of music and food.
Featuring a fantastic falafel bar after the service and new tunes
and old throughout the service.
Throw in some Israeli dancing from a professional teacher and
you have a real treat.

Liberal Jewish Attitudes To ... Israel
Gabriel Webber, one of the graduates of LJY (youth) as well as a member of KLS, will lead the
service and then will talk about how Liberal Judaism walks the line between friend of Israel and
friendly critic of Israel, how they try to encourage Progressive and ethical values in the State and
what they really think about aliyah! As well of course as taking questions and leading a
discussion. Tea and cake will be served during the discussion.

Yom Ha’Atzmaut Rabbi Charley Baginsky will screen the Israeli film 'Good Morning
Mr Fidelman’ (translated into English as 'Restoration' for the
Sundance Festival).
This is a film which gathers together all the pieces of modern Israeli
Society - religious and non-believers, traditional and modern, rich
and poor, European and Middle Eastern backgrounds.
The plot centres around a small furniture restoration business
in down town Tel Aviv. As the film begins one of the partners has
dies and bequeathed his share in the business not to his long term
partner, but to his son - Noah, a successful lawyer.
An excellent film which allows us to enter a discussion about the many dimensions of Israeli life.
Popcorn and cups of tea will be on hand!

KLS Bluebell Walk Springtime walk in the
beautiful bluebell forest of
Old Simm's Copse. Located
just south of Effingham, this
is one of the prime spots
for bluebells in the south of
England.
The walk will be about 5 or 6 miles along
footpaths in the Surrey hills and will definitely
be of undulating nature! Strong walking shoes/
boots advisable. Dress for the weather!
Meet at 11am in the Abinger Roughs Car Park
(National Trust), on White Down Lane (part of
the road going southwards between Effingham
village and the A25), a long way down and on
the right just before you reach the A25.
Bring a picnic!
Nearest facilities: Wotton Hatch Pub, 1 mile
away, on A25 towards Dorking or in Gomshall,
1½ miles away, on A25 towards Guildford.
These are not on the walk but we may drive to
one for a cup of tea afterwards.
Directions: From Effingham village (A246) turn
southwards along Beech Avenue. Keep on the
same road (which becomes Critten Lane). After
2 miles, go straight over a crossroads. Follow
the road past the first car park (White Down
Lane). The road starts to wind and eventually
goes over an old railway bridge. Abinger
Roughs Car Park is 350 yards on the right.
From the A25 turn northwards along White
Down Lane (opposite Raikes Lane). The car
park is shortly to be found on the left.

KLS will be going to the LJ Day of Celebration. We
are looking at getting a group together who want to
go to Birmingham on the Saturday afternoon, and
then all getting together to do something in the
evening - maybe go bowling, go for a meal - and all
stay overnight in the same hotel.
At the moment we are investigating the possibilities,
but it would be helpful to know if anyone is
interested in making a weekend of it.
The KLS Youth Club have been working on a short
film to be entered into the LJAFTAs (the LJ BAFTAs to
be awarded at the Day of Celebration!), and they are
sure that their film will make it onto the short list
that will be shown in Birmingham.
We will also be arranging a coach to travel up on the
Sunday morning, leaving around 7.30-8 am, and
returning in the evening. Please let Helen In The
Office know if you are interested in going – no
commitment at this stage.

It would be great to have a good turnout from KLS
members at this service which is cross communal.
Once in London there is plenty to do after the
ceremony which finishes at around 12.30 pm.
Packed lunches and a picnic might be a
good idea for families attending. The café near the
Serpentine is good for food and refreshments but
gets rather busy especially if the weather is good.
Seating and cover will be provided for over 500
reserved places. A form to reserve your space is
available at www.yomhashoah.org.uk or
020 7543 5400. Suitable for all. No charge.

Hermeneutics is the science of biblical interpretation. While the Rabbis of history may have seen
the Torah as a divinely communicated text, unified and without inconsistencies many of us today
are comfortable to disagree with this viewpoint. Even unconsciously many of us use traditional
Biblical hermeneutics to interpret and challenge the Torah text. However, as the field of
hermeneutics continues to develop can it help us deepen our own understanding of the Torah?
This seven week course is designed to explore some contemporary theories of interpretation and
delve into the question of whether they are helpful, meaningful or simply destructive and
distracting. Each week we will employ a close reading of a text alongside some theory. All levels of
knowledge welcomed.

NOTICES
We are changing the code on the gates
W e are changing the code on
the pedestrian and vehicle
gates in the week beginning 1 April.
This is during the Beiteinu and
Caterpillars Nursery holidays.
Why do we need to change
the code?
The code has been in place for two
years and is now widely known
among the local community, ex-
members of KLS, and former
Caterpillars Nursery staff. It is good
security practice to change the
code, and makes the buildings and
grounds as secure as possible.
What do the gates provide?
They give us greater security from
outside threats to the synagogue
building and Jewish community
using the building. It also helps to
assure the security of children
attending Caterpillars Nursery
during the week – the nursery staff
stand on the gate to let parents in
and out. KLS staff are often working
here alone so they need the
security of the gates to protect
against intruders.
Who will have the code?
The following people will have the
new code:
• KLS staff – the Rabbi, the
synagogue co-ordinator, the
caretaker, the cleaner, the Head
of Beiteinu, the Director of Music
and the Finance Officer
• KLS council members including
the presidents
• Nursery permanent staff
• Lock-up stewards – these are the
people who lock up on a Friday
night
• Security co-ordinator
• Organisers of KLS groups: Choir,
Doroteinu, table tennis, library,
bridge club, HMD workshop
committee
All of these people will also have
alarm codes and front door keys.
Maintaining security
The gate code will be given out
only by the synagogue co-ordinator
(Helen). She will keep a log of who
has the code and will ring people to
let them know the new code in the
week beginning 1 April.
If you are given the code, please do
not tell anyone else, not even a
spouse or child.
Please do not ask the above people
to pass the code on to you because
it could put them in an awkward
position.
How do I get in if I don’t
have the new code?
Most of the time (eg Shabbat
mornings, Friday nights) the person
on security will let you in. On Friday
nights, the Service Leader will be
here before the security steward
arrives. On Shabbat mornings, the
Council Member on Duty will be
here before the security steward
arrives.
If you are outside and there is no
one on security please ring the bell
– there is one on each of the
vehicle and pedestrian gates.
Someone inside will come and
open up.
If you are coming into the
synagogue and don’t think anyone
will be here please email or phone
the synagogue co-ordinator in
advance.
We hope these new arrangements
will not cause any problems. If they
do please contact Helen in the
office or Seymour at

KLS AGM
The next Annual General Meeting
will take place on Sunday 12 May
at 3 pm. The short formal session
will be followed by socialising and
chat over tea and biscuits in the NFJ
Hall. A good opportunity to meet
and make friends and talk with
Council members.
