Grand Knights Message

As I begin this month’s message, it is the Feast of St. Vincent De Paul and I am reminded of his words “Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity.”

As you have been reminded, the focus this year is to capitalize on past efforts and further the recognition of the Knights of Columbus and the work we do in the Broader community. That is why we have added, though our calendar has always been full, a number of outreach efforts for this year. While Double Star Council is a worthy and noble goal for which we must strive, its purpose is to enlarge the scope of our charitable endeavors with the expenditure of time and talent as well as treasure.

With that in mind, we have upcoming on Tuesday, October 9th, from 2-6 PM a “Bingo” game for clients and their families of Building Blocks Ministries. For those unfamiliar with this organization, it is a non profit 501(c) (3) group who trains the disabled by developing their individual skills to the greatest extent possible in order to function independently. We also support them financially. Sign up at the meeting.

First and foremost, we need a chairman! Someone who has worked a parish bingo in the past. I know you are out there; after all, we are Catholic. Brother Pete Capece has volunteered to call, and purchase the supplies but we also need workers to assist the players by distributing supplies, marking their cards, etc. No experience needed here.

The Pasta dinner was a huge success. Brother Luca and his team served about 200 folks and we net about $1400. Great work Brothers and sisters Luca, Bob Tuzzo, Ed and Jean Zarek, kitchen Squire Nico Barber, set up Squires and PGK Eric Palmer and Brother Serjohn Barber who supervised them. Servers Father Bob, Joe and Audry Nowicki and special thanks to our Auxiliary who once again provided the

desert. The brothers who jumped in last minute to mind the door, Mike Dybicz and Jack Wallace, doing the 50/50 were Sal Sangemino and Charlie Schleider. A great team effort which typifies this Council’s fraternal and charitable strength. Thank you all!

The Knights, both Council and Assembly, once again remembered “9-11” by participating in the Clermont Memorial at Fire Station #1. See the South Lake Tablet, an online newspaper at http://sltablet.com/news9.html .

Upcoming October events beside donut Sunday (Squires also), is Corporate Mass and Communion October 21st, Chaired by DGK Joe Cruz, and Membership Director Steve Cruz, and of course, the Parish Fall Festival October 26 and 27. PGK Bob Britten will be handling our food booth, while PFN Rosario Sulsenti will be handling the “adult” beverage truck. Brother Jorge Oliveras will be providing the music. Of course you are aware that Brothers Fred Costello and DGK Joe Cruz are co-chairing the event and PFN Pete Stauder is coordinating all food venues. The Parish needs volunteers especially if you have been fingerprinted by the Diocese and are current. Call the Office.

Other October events include Bingo for Building Blocks Ministry on the 6th, 2-6 PM; Rosary with the Philippine Ministry on the 13th, 12:00 noon on W. Minneola and 8th Street, downtown Clermont; Trunk or Treat 31st.

November marks the 10th Anniversary of this Council. The Anniversary Dinner will again be held in the Social Hall on November 17th. Brothers PFN Pete Stauder and PGK Bob Britten will again provide their culinary arts to a lovely dinner; however, we need someone to step up to handle the tickets!

Heads up: The Officer’s have recommended that the Council in conjunction with the Assembly purchase and serve Thanksgiving Day dinners to the poor and homeless. Spiro’s has

offered to close for the event and do the cooking. More at the meeting!

Well I’m preparing for two upcoming events that will impact my thinking and, possibly, my future. First, you and I are going to go to “the Polls” this coming November and we will each have to vote for the next leader of these

United States and a number of other people and issues. On the National level the current leadership has an agenda and the challenger has his. It is our job as citizens to educate

ourselves on the issues each supports, or doesn’t, and to make our choice. That last word is interesting in and of itself because between these two men “choice” is an issue.

Our Catholic teachings and recent articles in the Florida Catholic, the Knightline, and the Columbia Magazine all address the right of religious freedom and the roll of religious faith in the public forum. We, as citizens and more

over as catholic citizens, should know where our leaders stand on issues we consider faith driven. There are many avenues to reach out to and get information on where he or

she stands. Two good sources are the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops web site- [email protected] and our own diocesan web site- orlandodiocese.org. Check

them out – not only for the upcoming events but also to stay in touch with the church’s teachings and events.

We as Florida voters have specific Amendment #6 that “will allow a future legislature to bring back parental

consent for a minor’s abortion, a right struck down by the Florida Supreme Court in 1989”. I encourage you to read the Sept. 28, 2012 Florida Catholic article on this

Amendment. The stories of young women(minors) taken to abortion clinics by “friends”, given no information on other options, not contacting their parents about the

decision they are about to make and then realizing later the consequences to them and the child they aborted make one realize that we now have to take this opportunity to end this

practice. Get familiar with Amendment #6, understand what your faith teaches you about this act, reflect on what your duties are as a parent regarding the health and welfare of your minor children and vote “Yes for Amendment #6”.

Lastly, in October I’ll be heading to Jacksonville to attend the Florida Respect Life Conference. This is shaping up to be a two day conference (Oct 12-13) with some great

issues and speakers. I’m looking forward to the opening remarks by Bishop Thomas J. Olmstead of the Phoenix Diocese as he is a member of the US Conference of

Catholic Bishops Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty. Remember, we still have the fight of religious freedom over the Health and Human Services ruling on providing controversial health insurance to employees of our religious

institutions. Read our Supreme Knights opening article on Defending Our Inviolable Rights in this month’s Columbia before you go to that voting booth and understand what

each candidate stands for or against. It’s a great time to be Catholic and a great time to exercise your constitutional rights. You can bet I’ll be getting more info than I can put

in one news letter so if you see me don’t hesitate to ask what I heard/learned/ absorbed and observed.

October is Respect

Life Month.... consider

praying the rosary.

Supreme and State Council News

Fourth Degree ExemplificationOrlando, Florida Nov 24th, 2012

Faithful Sir Knights, Worthy 3rd Degree Brothers and Families All,

On November the twenty second, two thousand and twelve, we in the United States of America will be celebrating Thanksgiving, a day we traditionally spend with our families sharing our love of one another, giving thanks to God for the many blessings that he has given us and enjoying all the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the Holiday Banquet.  On that same weekend we (the Florida District) have planned a Fourth Degree Exemplification in

which you can join in with your Family of Brother Knights in thanking the Lord for all of his many blessings and share in the sights, sounds, and

experience of a lifetime.  Brothers, what a great way to celebrate a truly American tradition, share in a patriotic experience and be with your family too.    And to make

this weekend even more special, we are planning events for the whole family.  While Sir Knights and their guests are gathered together celebrating the

Exemplification at the Banquet, the children present we will be treated to a chaperoned Pizza Party.

Join us as we celebrate our Honoree Msgr. Thomas Skindeleski our State Chaplain. Msgr. Tom has proven to be a huge asset to our order in many areas and has been there to support our every effort.  Be sure to let him know how much you appreciate him on this Thanksgiving weekend by joining us with your presence.

The Exemplification will take place at the beautiful Rosen Plaza hotel, located at 9700 International Drive, Orlando, Fl. 32819.  Phone numbers are:  407-996-9700 or 800-627-8258.  Just mention you are part of the Knights of Columbus and you will get the special rate of $106.00 per night, but donʼt wait too long, when the block is gone the rates will be significantly higher.  Candidate fees are $70.00 and include one Banquet Ticket, 4th Degree pin and the social Baldric (room rate not included).  Our Banquet price for attending Sir Knights and guests is only $45.00 each; the Ladies Luncheon is available at the great rate of only $24.00.

Plan a Thanksgiving Family weekend with us and celebrate the largest class of the year. It is time for a break from the everyday hassle.  Why not take advantage of this great opportunity and have a mini vacation too, all while serving the Lord by being elevated to the highest honor in the order, that of “Sir Knight”.  This is your weekend, your vacation and at a reasonable rate. You still have plenty of time to save a little and bring the family to Orlando.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at:   407-870-9828 or Aide to the Master SK John Shierling at:  386-445-0594. Vivat Jesus,

Four parts of retirement: Phase Two

In a previous article, I discussed protection

and how Knights of Columbus products can

provide it for you and your wife in your retirement

years. The next phase of retirement is

accumulation of cash.

Those life insurance policies you purchased, if

they are permanent plans, carry a savings element

that helps with accumulation of wealth. Another

good option is a Knights of Columbus retirement

plan or annuity with a guaranteed interest rate.

After basic protection, you spend your working life

preparing not to work…for the day the paychecks

stop. Factor in here also your pensions,

government benefits and other savings you’ve

acquired over the years.

Some experts will tell you that you should

prepare for retirement with a plan that calls for

70% of the income you had pre-retirement. I think

that falls woefully short. Plan on the 90% range.

Consider this: what are you giving up that

translates to 30% of your income? You still have to

eat, you will travel more (going to see the

grandchildren), taxes need to be paid, and on and

on. Be careful of that 70% arbitrary rule.

I can help you build a plan to reach your goals.

Contact me today to learn more.

Special Olympics Bowling Tournament

Brothers,On Friday November 16, 2012, the Special Olympics Statewide Bowling Tournament will

take place a t t h e Kissimme A M F B o w l i n g Lanes i n Kissimme, Florida. A n n u a l l y the K of C C o u n c i l 13240 has

provided volunteers for this most important and heart warming event. Last year we had approximately 26 volunteers for the event, (Knights and Spouses.) Volunteers are needed this year and I would like to see a bigger contingent this year. The duties are: lane attendants who keep score and keep the bowlers in the right order of bowling, announcers on the loud speaker system, distributors of medals and awards and other work. The time required that Friday is from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm. I appeal to all Brothers and their Spouses to participate if you can. Special Olympics and most of all the participants and families are really appreciative of our help. My contact information is: Joe NowickiPhone: 352-394-4255Cell: 412-260-8405email: [email protected] Please participate as this is so rewarding to all. I promise an experience you will never forget.

On Satrurday September 8, 2012 the Special Olympics Statewide Golf Tournament took place at the Orange Lakes Resort in Kissimmee. Council 13240 was represented by myself and my wife. We were scorekeepers who drove around with the golfers. This experience was just as great as the bowling tournament. It was amazing the talents of some of the golfers and the caring parents who road along their children.I think we should consider this event for our council to volunteer for also. The Special Olympics Folks and participants were just as grateful to have someone who cares enough to help out. If you have any questions or need more details, please let me know. Thank you, Joe Nowicki

Pamela Venezio requested by James VenezioAllen Venezio Jr with fractured arm

Since October 12th is C o l u m b u s D a y , I thought I would give a brief history of our Orderʼs namesake.

C h r i s t o p h e r Columbus  was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, the son of a wool weaver and tavern k e e p e r . H e i s remembered as the Catholic explorer, navigator, and colonizer of the new world. Columbus sailed for a total of four voyages. It was by accident that Columbus discovered America. He initially sought after gold and rare spices through trade routes to Asia.

His first voyage took place in 1492. A second voyage took place in 1493 with the intent to colonize.   Though his promises of gold and wealth never materialized, he can best be remembered for his conversion of the natives to our Catholic faith. I plan on showing a video on Christopher Columbus at a future meeting.

At our October meeting, I will be showing the video “To Be A Patriot”. It is an inspiring video that shows the service of Sir Knights in the community. It is especially informative for those members planning on taking the 4th degree this November. Mike Ogden - Lecturer

Assembly Color Guard

to be at Exemlification in Orlando November 24th

Honors to our Assembly!!!! State Master Jim Shonfeld has asked our

color guard to participate in the upcoming Exemplification in

Orlando.

The assembly color guard is now a year old and this will be the

second exemplification that the group will do since organized.

This is an important honor and privilege for our Assembly.

Congratulations.

Color Corps Drill

Worthy Sir Knights,

We will have a color drill after

our meeting on Thursday

October 11th.

Please bring sword, service

baldrics and gloves .

We will drill on a couple of sword techniques that we

use with the Color Guard. Our Faithful Navigator

wants us to be familiar with these procedures.
