FROM THE DESK OF THE GRAND KNIGHT
On September 1st, we respect the dignity
of human labor. By working with His
own hands in Nazareth, Jesus conferred
dignity on labor.
Labor should be rewarded in such a way
as to provide people with the capacity to
cultivate in a worthy manner a material,
social, cultural and religious life for them-
selves and their dependents…(a summary
of the documents on socio-economic life.
Vatican II).
OUR CATHOLIC HERITAGE
A faith in Jesus Christ that unites us as
one under the authority of the Catholic
Church which Jesus founded.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE
The Gregorian Calendar.
In 1582, on the advice of astronomers,
Pope Gregory XIII corrected the differ-
ence between the sun and the Julian cal-
endar by ordering 10 days dropped from
October, as well as other corrections.
Although non-Catholic countries were
slow to adopt its use, the Gregorian calen-
dar is now used throughout the world and
is accurate to about 26.3 seconds per solar
year. This “Catholic” calendar is centered
on the birth of Jesus Christ (BC before
Christ; AD Anno Domini – ORIGIN Latin,
in the year of the Lord.) e.g. 4000 BC; AD
2014.
Genetics.
Gregor Johann Mendel was a Catholic
Augustinian monk (1822-1884). The
understanding of how genes are transmit-
ted from parents to offspring began with
the work of Mendel. Because of this
work, Mendel is known as the founder of
the science of genetics.
Wulf’s electroscope.
In 1910, Theodor Wulf (1868-1946), a
Catholic priest, made a sensitive electro-
scope. Using Wulf’s electroscope, Victor
Hess discovered radiation (cosmic rays)
from outer space and was awarded the 1936
Nobel Prize in physics.
Monsignor Georges Lemaître & Albert Einstein, 1933
The Big Bang Theory.
Georges Lemaître, a Catholic priest and
astronomer, was the first known academic
to propose the theory of the expansion of
the Universe, widely misattributed to Ed-
win Hubble. Lemaître further concluded
that expansion explains the redshift of
galaxies. Monsignor Lemaître is com-
monly known as the Father of the
Big Bang.
In 1931, in an article published in the
prestigious journal Nature* Lemaître pro-
posed that the cosmos expanded from an
initial point. He described his theory as
“the Cosmic Egg exploding at the mo-
ment of creation”, it became better known
as the “Big Bang Theory” a term coined
by Fred Hoyle during a BBC broadcast.
Also in 1931, Lemaître was the first sci-
entist to propose that the expansion of the
Universe was actually accelerating. This
was confirmed in 1998.
The Catholic Church and science are unit-
ed in this one truth: Everything in science
was created by the same God that founded
the Catholic Church.
Let’s be proud of our Catholic Heritage!
Thank you,
Dr. Jim Kreher Grand Knight
*G. Lemaître The Beginning of the World from the Point of View of Quantum Theory, Nature 127
(1931).
NOTE: Jim Kreher resigned this month from
the Grand Knight position. We wish him all
the best and thank him for his time and efforts.
Recently, Pope Francis reiterated the idea of the domestic church as a place of encounter. In an address June 1, he said, “Families are the
domestic church, where Jesus grows; he grows in the love of spouses, he grows in the lives of children. That is why the enemy so often
attacks the family. The devil does not want the family; he tries to destroy it, to make sure that there is no love there.” Thus, as Pope Fran-
cis so starkly reminded us, the family is a place of encounter not only on a temporal level, but also on a spiritual one. This will encourage every Knight of
Columbus family to be, in the words of Pope Francis, a place where Jesus grows in the love of spouses and in the lives of children. Vivat Jesus!
