Dear Brother Knights, We have just celebrated the birth of Christ, and the beginning of the New Year 2013, which I hope will give us an opportunity of welcoming new and returning Catholics back to the church and may we see all Catholics finding the true meaning of being followers of Christ. During this Year of Faith, we should learn and examine our faith and have a better and stronger relationship with God and focus on the teachings of the church. We all struggle daily with immorality, profanity, greed and wrongdoing that goes on around us in society and the world in general, that it is hard to distinguish what is right as per the teachings of the church and what we have somewhat got accustomed to during our daily lives. We as Knights and men of the Catholic faith need to STOP and examine our lives and take a stand to make others aware of the wrongdoings that we are so accustomed to. At the same time we can teach by example so that seeing how we live our lives, others may realize and follow our examples. We are about to start our season of Lent, and I would like to see many brothers and their families, work permitting, attend the daily mass more frequently. Also, let us try and encourage more brother knights to attend meetings/events by volunteering to drive them or accompanying them. If you have any ideas or suggestions you would like us to implement during the holy season of Lent, please call or send me an email so we can work upon it. God Bless.
Vivat Jesus!

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE
Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent
Four Parts of Retirement: Phase Four
Okay, if you’ve been following along in my articles, you’ve read about the first phases that lead to retirement.
Protection and accumulation of savings are the first two, followed by de-accumulation of those funds while
making them last.
The final phase is care. At some point, at some age (hopefully a very advanced age); you will need to slow down.
You will no longer be able to care for yourself. At that point, you will need to have assets available to provide
much needed care, either at home or in a care facility.
As you probably know, the cost of care continues to rise. I cannot quote you a number here (I could give you
specific details in a face-to-face meeting), but the nationwide average grows by leaps and bounds. How do you
plan to cover these costs? Government programs might not be available, or might require you to spend down
your assets leaving your family with little.
The best way to handle the cost of care in the future is to plan ahead today. The Knights of Columbus offers
long-term care insurance that can cover at home or facility care costs. And our product is backed by the financial
strength of the Order. It has many benefits and our premiums are competitive with any other company.
The Knights of Columbus – the organization you trust – is in a position to help you with every phase. Life
insurance, disability insurance, guaranteed retirement plans that turn into guaranteed income streams when
you retire, and long term care. There is no reason to go elsewhere as you prepare for the four phases!
Contact me today to schedule a meeting. I am at 778-837-2317 or [email protected].

Bro Butch Mendoza had always shown a desire to assist and help out as much as he could to fulfil his duties as a Brother Knight, but due to his limitation with his electric wheelchair he was restricted. On many occasions he was compelled to stay home due to the weather as he did not want to take a chance with the electric wheelchair, or could not make it due to being dependant on the Handy Dart Service that operates within limited hours. As such being the case and seeing his eagerness to do more, I assured him that we would not fail him and a request was sent out at our executive meetings to assist our fellow brother. God has been kind and before long we were able to find not one but two generous donors that came forward within our parish and council to help our brother in donating a wheelchair for his use. We would like to thank our parishioner Didi Ko and Bro Efren Guanzon for being the good Samaritans in answering our request. On behalf of our Council and Bro Butch and Family, we are ever grateful for your help and generosity. God Bless,
A HAPPY AND GRATEFUL
BROTHER KNIGHT

Inter Parish Altar Servers Basketball Championship On January 5th we started our first ever Inter Parish Basketball Championship with youth from St Jose, St Monica and St Paul participating in this inaugural sports activity. It is great to see the youth being active and energetic and at the same time getting to know others from different parishes. We were hopeful of Canadian Martyrs altar servers taking part, but unfortunately they were unable to form a team, nevertheless we will keep on trying and maybe we can be more successful on our next tournament.
So far the games are going well and though it’s been a challenge for all teams to commit to being present each Saturday, the organisers are doing a fine job in keeping the kids playing each weekend. We will be holding the Championship on Feb 16th and will be issuing certificates to all that attended and the Championship Trophy to the winner of the games.

We held our Council and District Free Throw Competition on January 26th and had a total of 28
children show up to compete for representing the district at the Regional Free Throw
competition to be held in Vancouver on Feb 17th 2013. After a couple of try outs and warm ups,
the competition began and after tallying up the scores, the finals are the standing of winners for
the next round.
All participants were served refreshments and given a certification of participation and all who
attended are looking forward to more sporting activities in the upcoming months as it is evident
from the photographs that they all had a great time. Special thanks to our District 23 brothers
that took the time to officiate and help with the running of this event.

Brothers please join me in congratulating Brother Elio and Diane Gasparetto as being chosen the family of the month for January 2013. Brother Elio has been a member of this council since 1992. He has been on the Executive committee since many years in various capacities and is also a 4th degree member. He is currently one of our Trustees on the Executive Board. He has been part of our First Degree from as long as I can remember and like me I am sure you all have encountered Bro Elio when you took your first step and entered your 1st Degree. He is a regular at visiting the sick and assists the Priest/Nuns taking communion for the sick, besides helping the sisters of Atonement with their soup kitchen in the downtown east side. Bro Elio is always there setting up pancake breakfast, running errands, flipping pancakes, telling jokes and also doubles up as Santa during our Christmas season. His wife Diane is always with him at setups for all functions, running the bar at our events, Eucharistic Minister, Lector at Mass, and are regulars at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Through their hard work and love for the Knights they have inspired their son Damien to join the Knights and many a time you will see the father son team pitching in at our events. Congratulations Gasparettos, it’s a blessing and honour to have such dedicated and hard working families in our Council – Thank You!
Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro John Koop as being chosen as the
Knight of the Month for Jan 2013. Brother John has been a Knight since 1992 and has been an active member of the council ever since he joined. He is a 4th degree member and takes an active part in all council affairs. He has been a recorder for our council for many years and though many may think he has taken a back seat, but Bro John is still very much active. He is the one running the logistics for our pancake breakfast, is there without fail to start the set up and is the last one leaving the kitchen after the pancake breakfast making sure all areas have been taken care of. Besides that he did a fine job on juggling the manpower for the charity appeal mall sales and even when we had two mall sales running parallel he was able to assign manpower to ensure a smooth operation, not to mention the other voluntary hours he puts in with all our various functions and also being a trustee on the Executive Membership Board.
Congratulations Brother John Koop and thank you for your time and talent and never failing hard work in all areas.
