July

Welcome once again, this time to our June / July 2019 edition of Knight Life. I trust that each of you had a safe, healthy and Holy Easter, and were able to celebrate this time with your family or friends as the case may be. Depending on your circumstances, I hope also that you were able to participate or attend some of the many services that were offered, to commemorate the passion and death on the cross of Our Lord, and subsequent resurrection from the dead.

State Chairman's Report

Notwithstanding the events of Palm Sunday to commence Holy Week, I have to say that the Chrism Mass on the Monday at the Cathedral to bless the oils, was a memorable event and a great reminder of the importance of our faith.

So too, I noted the presence of a number of Knights, some with wives, at the Anzac Eve Mass at the Cathedral, and good to see most participating in the procession which followed to the Cenotaph. A commemoration service followed the procession.

Your State Council continues to work hard to protect your interests and to

further the Objects of the Order. Obviously, Membership is our most challenging portfolio, and whilst we need to provide you with the necessary training to predict what may lay ahead for KSC and lead you or your Branch in addressing such matters, it is also necessary that we have your support by you targeting and talking to potential members, and seeking to have them join our Branches.

As a first step, we are providing a training session of approximately two hours about ‘Future Direction and Development’ on Saturday, 15 June at John Martin House, The Pines – next to our State Office. This has also appeared as an advertisement in Knight Talk. Whilst we are specifically asking Branch Chairmen and Secretaries to attend where they are able, I would urge all Members to attend if at all possible. I’m sure we will all benefit substantially from seeing this presentation by the National Training Officer, Bro John Hennessy. You will also have the opportunity to ask him questions and to lunch with him following the training, if you wish. However, if you attend the lunch, it is at the Member’s own cost. Those attending the training should advise Mrs Catherine Wiggett at our State office.

Talk of scheduled training leads me to reflect on the Southern Regions Conference, which was scheduled to be held on Sun, May 5 in Goolwa. Such conferences are held in the Southern and Northern regions each year to benefit Members from surrounding Branches, who are mostly unable to attend the State Conference in

The visible face of the Knights is often seen at events such as the Car Boot Sale organised and managed by the Mt Barker/Strathalbyn Branch. They manned the gates and Sausage Sizzle): the funds raised on the day were used to support charities in the Mt Barker and Strathalbyn area.

November. It allows them to hear about the activities of State Council and provide input to the issues at hand. Most disappointingly, sufficient attendees had either not responded or had declined prior to the RSVP date. Subsequently, the Conference was cancelled. It will be necessary that we seek the views of applicable Branch Members on participating in future Conferences, as the organisers spend significant time in preparation for such events.

The History sub-committee continues to push ahead towards having the work of Knights of the Southern Cross in South Australia recorded in a book. We have now interviewed a prospective author and visited one printing shop but we need to address the issue of funding this project. Whilst we are looking at several sources of possible funding, including Government grants and sponsorships, we have also decided to appeal to Branches for their help by way of donations towards this important project. By the time you get to read this Knight Life, you will probably have seen, or at least heard of an email to Branch Secretaries asking for Branch commitment to support the writing and printing of this book. I hope Members and Branches will be sufficiently enthused about our history to support the appeal.

Finally, I hope you stay warm as the cold weather approaches and healthy as this ‘flu season menaces us with its extreme symptoms.

Take care all of you and your families.Don Campbell — SA State Chairman

The First Hundred YearsAs I write this the Knights of the Southern

Cross are preparing for their National Conference in Sydney. It will mark the centenary of their existence. A lot has happened since 1919 in the world at large and the Church.

Counting the present Pope, there have been eight Bishops of Rome in that time. Australia has had an equal number of Prime Ministers in far fewer years.

In these days of Eastertide, we have been hearing from the Acts of the Apostles proclaimed at Mass. This book is the first history of the Church. It may be claimed that society in the mid-nineteenth century, an era when electronic communications were invented and rapid transport began, was little changed from the days of St Paul. The Acts of the Apostles recount his journeys across the Roman Empire by foot, horseback and sailing ship.

In the 1850s or thereabouts, the inventors of the Morse Code and later the telephone could not have foreseen the internet and social media. Pope Francis has been called to lead the Church in a world that neither St Peter or St Pius XII (1939 – 1958) would have understood.

The National Knights Conference in 2019 will be a time to review the missionary aims of K.S.C. in a post-Christian society.

F rom Mgr Rob

In 1919 the Versailles Treaty was signed at the end of World War I. It was heralded as the treaty to end all wars!

has also accepted St Paul’s admonition we must endure many hardships before we enter the Kingdom. It is a cliché to state that we are a changing Church in a changing world. For some the new beginnings are happening far too quickly and others are frustrated by the apparent tardiness of the Church to meet the needs of the time. An ocean liner is not turned around easily.

The Second Vatican Council 1962-1965 planted the seeds for the renewal of the Church. We have only just begun to reap the harvest.

The Knights of the Southern Cross are of course one small organism in the international Church. We can pray that the conference in 2019 will be open to the Spirit in plotting our course for the next 100 years.

Step 1: Opening prayer — From the Order’s Prayers

Step 2: Readings on the Theme“Catholic Men are called, by joining the Order, to enter into a deeper reality of being Church rather than just being at Church! This will require them to be willing to resolve that they are for Christ and wish to be part of a fraternity that will assist them in finding their place in the Church and the wider society as bearers of and with Christ.” (Basil Toohey, Introduction, ‘Reach for the Stars’, Cliff Baxter, Connor Court, Melbourne, 2009)

At the time of the celebration of the first 50 years of the Order, Cardinal Gilroy then Archbishop of Sydney said:

“The Knights of the Southern Cross in 1969 can look back on a half-century of achievements. Established in a spirit of loyalty to the Church and devotion to Australia, the spirit of the Order has been one of service. Ever ready to cooperate in any good work undertaken by the Church, always seeking new avenues of exercising their influence for the good of the community, the Knights of the Southern Cross today may be grateful that they have preserved intact the motives of the founders of the Order.”(‘Reach for the Stars’, Cliff Baxter, Connor Court, Melbourne 2009)

Session 5The Holy Spirit in our TimeFormation ProgramTheme: A Century of ServiceThis year the Knights of the Southern Cross in NSW is celebrating the first century of its formation in 1919. It is impossible for us not to rejoice in this milestone. But it would be remiss of us not to reflect upon the ongoing response the Knights make to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in every age.

“In 2009 with a serious shortage of priests, a decline in church attendance by young people, a shrinking job market, a loss of healthy sociability, and sex becoming a commodity, the questions facing the Knight are:

Where are you going? What are you doing?

In 1919 the issues were different. We, in our world, have changed. If warmongers of old could urge young men to get into khaki and perish in France, what are we in 2009 telling our young Catholic Australians?

Will we encourage them to rise up to defence their Church?” (Prologue, ‘Reach for the Stars’, Cliff Baxter, Connor Court, Melbourne, 2009)

Similar records from the Knights in other States will give testimony to this Century of Service in their respective areas. These tracts are taken from the NSW history in recognition of the NSW significant anniversary this year.

Step 3: Allow a few moments reflective silence.

Step 4: Scripture ReadingBut someone may say: So you have faith and I have good deeds? Show me this faith of yours without deeds, then! It is by my deeds that I will show you my faith. You believe in the one God — that is creditable enough, but even the demons have the same belief, and they tremble with fear. Fool! Would you not like to know that faith without deeds is useless.” ( James 2:18 – 20)

Step 5: Reflection (5 Mins)

Step 6: Sharing (10 Mins)

• Reflect upon the history of the Knights in your own particular area.

• Note projects undertaken and identify what motivated those projects to be chosen.

• Identify what might be described as the promptings of the Holy Spirit in those projects.

• Discuss what might be the prompting the Holy Spirit is giving about the future in your own area.

Step 7: Conclusion

We pray together: Be present with us, O Holy Spirit, for it is in your name that we are specially gathered together. Come to help us in our affairs, and be pleased to enter into our deliberations.

Instruct us in what we should do. Let it be You, first of all, who inspire our suggestions. May You who love justice, let us not offend against justice or charity. Grant also that we may act intelligently.

Keep us by the gift of your grace in harmony with your will, so that we may act as one with You, who with the Father and the Son live and reign, God for ever and ever.

Amen

Step 2: Readings on the ThemeFather Raniero Cantalamessa is the Preacher to the Papal Household.

He delivers the Lent and Advent Retreats to the Holy Father and the Curia. He is one of the leading authorities on understanding the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church in our time.

“Where does the grace we experience in the Baptism of the Spirit come from? From those around us? No! From the person who receives it? No! It comes from God! We can only say that such grace is related to baptism, because God acts always with coherence and faithfulness and He does not do and undo. He honours the commitments and institutions of Christ. One thing is certain — that it is not the brothers who impart the Holy Spirit, but they do invoke the Holy Spirit on the person. The Spirit cannot be given by any man, not even the Pope or a bishop, because no man possesses by himself the Holy Spirit. Only Jesus may give the Holy Spirit; all the others do not possess the Holy Spirit, but rather are possessed by Him. As to the manner of this grace, we may speak of a new coming of the Holy Spirit, of a new mission by the Father through Jesus Christ, or a new anointing corresponding to a new degree of grace.( Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa OFMCap 17 Dec 2011)

Session 6The Holy Spirit in our TimeFormation ProgramTheme: Encouraging Participation

The Holy Spirit brings people into divine life as children of God where they can live, as true children, in a relationship of intimacy, freedom, and faith in the love and mercy of God. (Pope Francis)

Step 1: Opening prayer — From the Order’s Prayers

Step 3: Allow a few moments reflective silence.

Step 4: Scripture Reading

Jesus said:

I tell you, if anyone openly declares himself for me in the presence of human beings, the Son of man will declare himself for him in the presence of God’s angels.

But anyone who disowns me in the presence of human beings will be disowned in the presence of God’s angels.

Everyone who says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven, but no one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will be forgiven.

When they take you before synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say, because when the times comes, the Holy Spirit will teach you what you should say.

(Luke 12:8 – 12)

Step 5: Reflection (5 Mins)

Step 6: Sharing (10 Mins)

• Was Father Cantalamessa’s thought that we are all possessed by the Holy Spirit helpful in understanding how we participate together as disciples of Jesus?

• Are there any times when we have been faced with decisions that seem to bring into conflict what is comfortable with what our faith-community might expect?

• How did we resolve that conflict?

• Was the Holy Spirit involved?

Step 7: Conclusion

We pray together: Spirit of wisdom and understanding, enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries of the universe in relation to eternity. Spirit of right judgment and courage, guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision to follow Jesus’ way of love. Spirit of knowledge and reverence, help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another.May we respect life as we work to solve problems of family and nation, economy and ecology. Spirit of God, spark our faith, hope and love into new action each day.Fill our lives with wonder and awe in your presence which penetrates all creation. Amen

Branch ReportsEDWARDSTOWN/PLYMPTON

I wasn’t at our Meeting on April 10th because Joan and I indulged in a short holiday to Mildura area and saw what was happening with the drought (and Water Allocations). The last 100 miles of the Darling existed because that segment had become part of the Murray.

Out of and away from Mildura, the land was suffering. There were few birds and insects didn’t commit their bodies to our windscreen; we saw the occasional group of emus co-existing with a few sheep and just miles and miles of red dirt – the scenes were pretty sad although Mildura itself still seemed impressive as was the land close to the river. With our recent burst of weather, it is possible the scenes may have changed.

I also was absent from our the 8th May Meeting — as an ex-smoker my lungs weren’t the best — but I had a good stand-in with Bro Peter C who filled me in. Around 8 or 9 were present, the Formation segment went well, the Paper round is still active and we’re still solvent.

It’s about time we had some levity: i A wife speaking to the retired husband

said, ‘What are you going to do today?’ He replied ‘Nothing’. She came back with, ‘You did that

yesterday!’ And he countered with, ‘I haven't

finished yet.’ i The Statistics on Sanity are that 1 out

of every 4 Australians is suffering from some sort of mental illness. If your three best friends are OK, then it's you.

iii Don't take life too seriously. No-one gets out of it alive!

iv RUBBERNECK: What one does to relax a wife.

v PHARMACIST: A helper on a farm. I had a pleasant surprise the other day

when an ex colleague rang me from Sydney for some information and a chat. I thought after-wards that Doug wasn't so young as

he's been retired for some time now and also possesses an ‘OBE’. It's all relative. I've been told that I should concentrate on being an ‘oldie’.

Apart from Falls etc, we try to stay alive and counter Alzheimer's by various means — diet, limited exercise, mind games and social activity plus limiting the intake of certain liquids — and a few get past the 93 mark to make 100. I have to accept and use that rather laconic remark of ‘God Willing’.

Not a lot of news. Our next Meeting is on Wed,June 12 at 7.30pm. I hope to make it — God Willing.

Be Happy, keep on laughing (loud) and remember the following. There are two way to spread happiness …

Either be the light who shines it or be the mirror who reflects it. God Bless,

Frank Brogan

WOODVILLE / WEST TORRENSThe May Branch meeting was a very

entertaining and informative night. We started the meeting by doing the very stimulating Formation Program with all Members contributing to the discussion.

Bro Brian Cooper spoke about the History Project and the cost of producing it i.e. paying an author or writer to write the story and then producing the books. The Branch will consider assisting with sponsorship of producing the Order History.

After supper we drew the next series of 45 Club. It has been running for a couple of weeks and will run through until mid July.

I would like to remind all our readers of our Branch’s Mid-Year Luncheon to be held on Sun, Jul 7 at the Alberton Hotel commencing at noon. Bookings and further information can be obtained by telephoning Joe on 0412 496 880.

We have many frail and aging Brothers on our membership list, please remember to include them in your prayers.

SOUTHERN FLEURIEUSince the article in the last edition we

have had two successful fund raisers. The first was our BBQ at Bunnings in early February, where we raised almost $600. Many thanks to our Members who got right behind the day, and if we were short on a roster someone would stay behind to help out. Bro Robert Lee even stayed on to do 3 shifts, which was greatly appreciated. Our gratitude to Bro Mike O’Halloran who made all the arrangements with Bunnings, and to Bros Phil Burns and Bill Longworth who acted on our sub-committee to handle the extensive arrangements required for the day to run properly. Our next success was the St Pats Night. I must give credit to the South Lakes Golf Club where we held the event. Thanks to great support from the people from Victor Harbor we had about 116 people attend. The golf club had a similar attendance, and the club made sure that both groups felt we were all one group in celebrating the night. Their members got behind our raffles, and in the end an amount of about $700 was raised. Again, we are in debt to Bro Mike O’Halloran and his wife Marina for organising and printing the raffle tickets, as well as Bros Robert Lee and Tony Siciliano who got amongst the large crowd to sell over 200 tickets. We are now in the process of selling our Mother’s Day wine raffle (almost sold out), drawn at 9 am Mass at Goolwa.

I mentioned in my last article that our Order was seeking people in our area who are in need of support, and the first is an organisation caring for the homeless on the South Coast, who recently held a sleep out in Victor Harbor, and raised $20,000 to assist these unfortunate people. I will shortly catch up with an Anglican priest in Victor Harbor who is heavily involved in this group and will certainly offer our support.

Finally, it gives me pleasure to record an event I have never experienced in my 4 years of writing these articles. We have a new Member. His name is Peter Lugg, and he is a member of the Goolwa community.

He is a former minister of the Christian Fellowship group and has been a Catholic for some years now. Welcome, Peter! I am sure you will be an acquisition to the Order.

And I will finish with a little humour. A very drunk man was staggering home when he ran into a man looking over his broken-down car. The drunk asked what the problem was, to which the owner of the car grumpily informed him: Piston broke. The drunk man replied: Same here, Buddy, same here!

HECTORVILLE/TRANMEREAt the April meeting there were 7

members present with 1 apology. After donating $200 to the Epilepsy Centre last month, we received a thank you note and “Certificate of Appreciation” from them.

Treasury reported that our finances are looking good. Meanwhile, the Bottle Drive Team handed in a lump sum of $91.50 for their effort – thanks to Bros Mike P. and Jim S.

Members were reminded about the Marian Procession on Sunday May 19, 2019 – volunteers required to assist during the day.

Bros Mike Boyle and Otto Moscon met with the School Principal of St Joseph (Tranmere) to sort out a few issues regarding the access to the large Hall for our Parish Family Dinner on the Friday afternoon to set up tables etc. Everything was resolved and as a token of appreciation we decided to donate $200 to the School which is to be used as a prize for a Book Voucher to a suitable recipient or recipients during Book Week coming up soon in June or July this year.

The Family Dinner was discussed in detail at the meeting and it will be catered by the Texas Bull Machine on Friday May 31, 2019. It will be a 2 course meal of Soup and Spit Roast from the caterers while the ladies of the Parish will be supplying the Desserts.

Lastly Bro Mike Boyle announced that he will be going to Kapunda on April 8 to invite parishioners to an information night, hoping to acquire some new members and start up a Branch in that area.

The May meeting had 7 Members present with 2 apologies. The only correspondence received so far was a letter from Hutt St for their Winter Appeal. All members agreed to give a donation of $200 (cheque was sent off the next day).

Once again the Bottle Team have been busy and this month gave treasury a sum of $76.50 (thanks to Bros Otto,

Mike P. and Jim S.). The sausage sizzle held on Sun, April 28 at Tranmere made a profit of $200.25 — (thanks to my volunteers, M. Pierce, C. White, my son Thomas and son-in-law Franco). Next sausage sizzle will be Sun May 19.

Mike Boyle reported on his trip to Kapunda where initially they had 6 names to begin with, but unfortunately 2 declined the offer due to other commitments, which meant that it was not enough to form a Branch. Further discussions have been deferred until June or July. We wish him Good Luck.

Cheers for now.Otto Moscon

PORT PIRIE / CRYSTAL BROOKWe announced the winner of the Easter

Raffle and the amount raised at our last meeting. There was a general agreement that $1,404 was a satisfactory achievement and we felt confident that this would support a couple of significant needs in our local area. The winner of the raffle was Bro Peter Cousins. ‘A popular winner’ was acclaimed as we laughed at him. It was his second win in our annual raffle and there was a call for auditors and scrutineers.

Now flushed with money, at another section of our meeting we confirmed that our two local priests, recently transferred, would receive a financial gift of farewell. We were also able to allocate to our local College, St Mark’s, a donation of $300 to contribute to a fund-raising effort to support disadvantaged schools in the Philippines.

Attending our recent meeting was the new Parish priest and Cathedral Administrator Fr Jimmy Pantin. He was welcomed and we affirmed the wonderful partnership that we have with the parish and shared a statement of mutual support. We felt very confident of his support.

The Formation Program reflection was really enjoyable this month. We began by sharing memories of visits to the Vatican and the magnificence of St Peter’s Basilica. This was spurred on from the opening statement in the Knight Life around the way the Holy Spirit is expressed through architecture and the Bernini brilliance four centuries ago. Our Members spoke of adventures to St Peter’s crypt or the experience of the great statues and magnificence of the sacred space. We all seemed well travelled and I knew that our Members connected to a transcendence in their various holidays and pilgrimages around the world.

We spent some time speaking of the way the Holy Spirit was expressed in our lives. There was a gentle holiness about this moment. Brothers spoke of the God of surprises, the blessedness of a marriage, the meetings with people who touched their heart, the inspiration of others and the coincidences to which they gave a sacredness. It was great stuff. God does seem to work in people’s lives.

We were delighted to finish our meeting with a supper at the Bishop’s home, which is 100 metres from our meeting venue. Bishop Greg O’Kelly has been a great support to us, but, in his busyness in Adelaide and the Port Pirie diocese has been a more distant friend than usual. “Come for a nightcap” he insisted to us all and we joined him at his home for a beautiful finish to the meeting. This is one of the unique and precious parts of being a rural community. We get an access to our Bishop and we are so grateful. There was a glass of port or a little whiskey and lots of talk and laughter. As I have written, God does seem to work in people’s lives.

PORT AUGUSTAWhat a very warm first few months of

2019 we have endured, let’s hope we start to get some cooler weather and some very needed rains especially for our farming Members.

It has been a slow start to 2019 within our Branch, but we have had a few positive outcomes.

Bro Lorenzo Duregon was awarded with his 50 years membership, Bro Lorenzo has been a very quiet achiever within the Port Augusta Branch as well as the All Saints Parish community. Apart from the Knights he has given many years of service to the Lions club in Port Augusta.

On Feb 21, Bro Jeff Shillabeer and myself attended the Port Augusta Secondary School and presented the YES centre with a hospital training bed which will be used in training future accredited trained personnel to work in the aged care and medical industry. Pictured below are the Principal Paul Billows and Deputy Principal Simon Owen, along with 3 students who will be graduates of the program plus Branch Chairman Neil Miller and treasurer Bro Jeff Shillabeer.

At the completion of the presentation we were given a personal tour of the campus by Emily Doran daughter of the Branch Chairman … by gee how education has changed over the years! Jeff and I were overwhelmed by the resources and flexibility available to

the students for their educational purposes — the comment made was, “things have changed since we done secondary education”.

Over the last few weeks a few of our executive have been on the sick list —

Bro Paul McGeever has had a quadruple bypass at the Wakefield Hospital in Adelaide, Paul’s wife Elaine was attending Mass at the cathedral one day while Bro Paul was in hospital and took a tumble down the steps as she was leaving and ended up in the RAH. I can now report that both are now home recovering and are gradually getting back into their normal daily chores.

While we keep them in our prayers for healthy recoveries also remember Mary Davis granddaughter of Graham and Geraldine Davis who is going through a bit of a rough time with medical issues.

It is good to see back to his good self after his short bout of illness late last year.

Let’s wish the remainder of the year is more positive and fruitful than the first few months.

Neil Miller

TRAINING DAY — JUNE 15, 2019Future Direction and Development

State Council has invited the National Training Officer, Bro John Hennessy, to Adelaide to provide in-depth and thought provoking training session, aimed at Branch Executive and State Council Members. Whilst reviewing our future, the presentation is expected to help us consider how we can better ssist the Church and our Parishes, and in turn help our Membership.

The training is expected to go for no longer than 2½ hours.

It will be held at John Martin House, The Pines, 336 Marion Rd, Plympton, commencing at 10.00am.

Interested Members are invited and Branch Chairmen and secretaries, or their delegates, as well as State Councillors, are especially asked to attend this very important Training Day.

MURRAY MALLEECan you believe we are almost halfway

through another year? I guess everyone is thinking the same, at least at last we had a burst of much appreciated rainfall. I am sure at different times we all prayed for rain; I wonder if we remembered to give thanks when it arrived?

Our Parish Priest Fr John Herd was on a mission in East Timor during Easter, but we were still well looked after with his assistant Fr John Vildzius and a visiting Priest Fr Dennis Ryan. All went well except for the Saturday night Easter Vigil; because of a fire risk danger we were unable to light up the normal fire.

Even so it is marvellous how you can improvise when the need arises and it good to say nothing detracted from a beautiful service. As our formation tells us the Holy Spirit is always present in our lives, a gift of God.

A few chores in and around St Columbkille’s keep us busy with the odd project or two, this time sharing with PPC members we are focusing on a bit of landscaping at the back of the Church.

Looking through Knight Talk there are quite a few functions on and around the Branches, this is a sign of vibrancy and important socialising, however with small numbers and a restriction in some cases on a long drive it makes it hard to attend too many functions.

We did get an inspiring letter from Hutt St Centre thanking our Branch for donations and pointing out that we are their longest and consistent donors. With it came an invitation to attend one of their meal serving lunches. We think we can be blessed with the kind offer of a generous chauffeur to make it come true for a couple of our Members.

Hope everyone keeps warm and healthy during the winter months as we continue to pray for the well being of the Order of the Knights, the Members and families. Peace and Happiness.

Peter Connolly

DERNANCOURTOur last two meetings have been

extremely well attended boosted with the presence of Bros Jim Dwyer and Sylvester Ng (from Tranmere branch).

This month’s meeting began with the Formation on the theme “The Holy Spirit Transmits Holiness”, which in truth left most Members gob smacked and quite bewildered — not exactly light reading. It was a great relief then when Bro Peter Roberts summed it all up very succinctly with his definition of Holiness and brought things down to a realistic and fathomable level. He also mentioned how when he was a teacher, he always began his lessons with the Morning Offering and how the kids never complained about it, in fact they enjoyed it. It’s a prayer you never forget and if we say it every day, well you can’t do much better than that because there are works, joys and sufferings (most) days. Well done Peter.

Bro Schell assumed the duties of Secretary for the meeting due to the indisposition of Bro John Boddington. He displayed his multi skilling by announcing as treasurer a very healthy bank balance from which it was decided we could donate $2000 to the Vinnies’ Winter Appeal. Perfect timing as winter has struck in May with some wonderful rainfall. This donation is a result of the summer netball BBQ’s and the cheque will be presented at Mass at St Pius X soonish.

Bro Don Campbell (State Chair) gave us a very comprehensive report of matters state. He mentioned the forthcoming training session available to all Members and to be presented by John Hennessy from Melbourne. The topic is ‘Future Direction and Development’ with Membership being the primary theme. This led to quite a lively discussion about the Order’s future and what we do as individuals to recruit new members. Great debate.

He then went on to describe the compilation of the history of the Knights in SA and how this may hopefully be published as a hard copy book in 2022, the year of SA KSC’s Centenary. He outlined some of the rather large prospective costs for a writer and actual publishing and how this could be covered — this led to another spirited discussion. Other questions to arise were how many copies they hope to sell, what would each copy cost, would it also be in digital form and would it all be worth the expense? And does that fit in to the Objects of the Order?

Other matters discussed were the ongoing BBQ’s at Labrina Ct (Bros Roberts and McEwen) and John Paul II (Bro Gill), the BBQ on Election day at St Pius X school (which disappointingly has lapsed, same fate as most of the election promises) and possible trailer pickup of donations from local Colleges for the Vinnies’ Winter Appeal in early June.

The evening concluded with fellowship plus mini pies, pasties and snag rolls washed down with a glass of red or two.

We would ask you to remember Bro John Boddington and wife Fran in your thoughts and prayers as they battle John’s serious health issues.

PARA REGION Our April and May Meetings had

respectively nine and twelve Members present and with five and four apologies recorded also. As usual, all portfolios were addressed and dealt with accordingly.

Financially, our position there remains in a healthy state and it is our aim to further increase donations to worthy causes as we move forward into the next budget year.

Once again, our Agenda continues to be highlighted with ongoing health concerns and issues to members and associates. Bro Malcolm Allison's son in Melbourne continues to be in a serious condition although stable at this time. Bro John Calleja's mother passed away May 6 at the age of 83. Dudley and Margaret Dolman continue to be affected by ongoing health issues also.

State Bro Chairman Don Campbell as usual gave a most informative report on central issues. He spoke of the proposed plan to have a book prepared and published on the history of the Knights in South Australia. Our Branch is very receptive to this idea, and quite prepared to support this venture financially.

Finally, those Mighty Eagles have hit rock bottom, and when I asked the Good Lord as to when we will win our next match, He replied: “Probably not in my life time??”LOL

Some things grab you and stick. Like … We know that if physically we forget to breathe we are in serious trouble and every effort is made to get us breathing again and that sometimes involves others. The same is true in our spiritual life — if we forget the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we need to address that issue and that can also sometimes involve others. When you read on and get to ‘Paddy’s

Corner’, come back and read this again. Who are the others in this case, who is in trouble? “O Holy Spirit, guide us.”

Paddy’s CornerTry and put your head around our

future. In 20 years I will be 90 plus and I am one of the young ones currently. When I look around the church at my Mass Centre, I am one of the young ones. Last meeting, we talked about how we will leave a church for the youth that is following behind us. We need to be planning that now, yes, we, because we are the church of today. As parishioners, we should be involved in the decisions i.e. what to sell, or what to pass on to our kids and the youth of today and tomorrow.

Looking forward, what do we need to keep, develop, to protect our community? Looks like we have a Parish Priest who is pastoral i.e. supportive of our Kids at school, our youth through Antioch, our families. He is already down from the pulpit, walking between us, trying to mix with us, support us.

How can we grow the parish community via activities and support roles? Remember the school closes in just over 6 months. What assets does our Parish Priest require to support his pastoral role?

Knights Website Bro Andy Tamassy gave us a presentation

on the KNIGHTS Website. He fired up his laptop, shot it up onto the screen on the wall for all to see. This was the website he is building for us and the Knights of South Australia. Andy mentioned something special near the end of his presentation. He requested us to fire up our computers, notebooks, laptops or phones. Log yourself onto the Knights web. “The more hits we make on the website the cheaper it becomes to supply”.

So, if you can’t get on, don’t know how to get on, haven’t got it in your ’FAVORITES’. We can fix this. We need to know. Andy can’t fix what we don’t know about. We will get Andy to show us on the screen how to log on again and this time, how to then put it in our favorites, so

we can find it easy each time we fire our machine up. Let’s see the hits go through the roof then.

Four cheques at $100 each were passed on to our four St Vincent de Paul Conferences of Brighton, Marion, Hallett Cove and Glenelg. We in turn thank all our Members and friends who support us by donating their MT bottles and cans. Without their help our cash flow would dry up and the wheel to Vinnies ceases to rotate. Well done all involved. The Vinnies Conferences pass on their thanks.

Many of the parliamentary sessions (during 2018) apparently weren’t particularly inspiring and certainly the sessions during the run-up to the elections were nearly as bad. In my view the last few weeks haven’t been helpful as well with what seems to be a continual chorus line from that ‘Annie get your Gun’ musical — “Anything you can do, I can do better.” However, by the time you read this, we should know who are our masters are for the next few years.

Our first major problem must be ‘Reconciliation’ with descendants of the original inhabitants. It is a complex issue now and the longer it goes on, the more it will fester, and become more complex as our numbers continue to increase. I haven’t heard it mentioned during the lead-up into this election and I wonder what that means!

I understand that the second major problem will not be solved by us as many in the world (and Australia) still believe in the Milton Friedman claptrap; In essence his credo is a belief in ‘Greed’ and the Gig economy where everyone looks after themselves; it really is an affront to social living. There is no room for Social Justice and the Economic system is as close to real Capitalism as it can get. The recent Royal Commission into Banking showed what a disaster it can be.

We cannot do much about Climate Change except pursue the causes of the pollution and minimise the contribution from Australia. I suggest that we should have a ‘Carbon Cost’ and should not assist other countries to pollute. Our Coal, Mineral and Gas supplies should be eked out in order to assist our progeny — once gone, they’re gone. It seems reasonable to

invest in Solar Energy and the generation and export of Electricity. We sell our gas, coal and minerals and get off scot-free from any penalties that will accrue; and, there has to be a reckoning at some stage whether we like it or not.

Water is probably the third most pressing problem on my list. We have the Murray Darling system which has been milked, modified and changed. Sabotage and the stealing of water flows seems to be ‘the go’; so much so that the last 100 miles or so of the Darling is filled with Murray water. We should press for a non-political, but Science based review of that system and what it should and should not support in order to remain healthy and supportive of social life etc.

The so-called Culture War is next on my list. The long held world view that the Gender Divide (Female and Male) is a real division and not an imaginary one is part of the Social Activism agenda; but this weird approach to life is supported by a goodly number of large Corporations and Government Institutions and is dubbed as being progressive. I think it’s just another aspect of the Gay agenda.

There is some debate about an Integrity Committee or Commission. What that means is that the majority of us (including our representatives) haven’t a social compass to navigate the social system; we don’t understand the so-called Determinants of Social groups, large and small. What makes them Stable, able to Grow and remain Cohesive. Australians need to understand the ground rules and not rely on slogans to get by.

There is quite a bit to ponder from the Ruddock Committee on Religious

Our P roblems and Hope‘Our Problems’ refer to some of the problems we Australians need to solve and not dance around. And, I have added ‘Hope’ to the title because we need it in large lumps if multicultural social harmony is to be maintained.

Freedom. Some of those findings have or will spike another debate on Marriage Equality and whether one likes it or not, that issue is still smouldering in the background. It seems strange to me that 67% of Australians apparently believe that Love is the only social determinant and either forget or don’t understand that Truth, Wisdom and Openness are part of the deal and that the four are interlocked. Our society cries out for the four.

I wrote about our Freedom some years ago and quoted two eminent Australians about the way our Coalition government wanted to head. I suppose I didn’t paint a pleasant picture and the new proposals also don’t sit well with my thoughts.

Maybe you can appreciate my reference to Hope which must play a small but significant part in the social scheme. We all have to have Hope — particularly Christians and those that believe in the here-after. We all use the construct and to a degree indulge in the dreams and visions conjured up by it in our minds.

Hope has to be coupled to an Activity before it can generate any Power and the Concept comes into its own and contributes its maximum effect when striving and survival are at stake.

At those times Wisdom and Faith may be at a low ebb suggesting that acquiescence or surrender may be a more prudent course of action. And, the psychological visions conjured up by Hope may offer a rosier future not withstanding the inherent reality of the present situation

I have set down a few factors which I consider important for our attention. So I just hope that Sincerity and Justice enter the various social arguments and we don’t become the laughing stock of American, European, Indian and Asian societies by indulging in the 2018 political machinations.

ABERFOYLE PARK Having been asked very recently

to write this month’s report I am now sitting here scratching my head thinking “WHAT’S NEWS?” Life continues for all of us at a hectic pace often leaving us with little time to contemplate what we are doing or where we are going.

The Formation Program has been a large part of our monthly branch meetings sometimes with lengthy and lively discussions. Our present program is in the same vein questioning how the Holy Spirit effects our lives. Do we spend enough time to pray and thank God for all that is good in our day?

We all need to take time each day to do this.We have been busy with various matters

that have been recorded in past reports, so I won’t repeat them now. Our Branch is only small with nine members (three living outside the parish), but we have been fortunate to have Members who have been active at branch, state, national and international levels. I look forward to this continuing for years to come but falling numbers is our biggest problem along with all other branches.

All members must make an effort to ensure that the Knights of the Southern Cross continues to be relevant to Members and our church.

SOUTHERN CROSS GOLF CLUBAt the end of March we played a

stableford round, the first round of the Cappo Brothers Trophy. This is the trophy for the aggregate score of our March and June events. As can be seen by the scores below six players were able to score 36 points or better. Congratulations to one of our most consistent players, Brian Clancey, who had 42 points. Simon Sleep, our current Club Champion continues to have good scores. He won A Grade with 41 points — his improvement is reflected by his ever decreasing handicap. Congratulations to both players on excellent performances.

Our April event was the Annual President v. Captain match play competition. Our President, who was unable to play that day, because of family commitments, will be very pleased that his team was successful; this being his first win for 2 or 3 years. He has bragging rights back again.

This year our attendances have been down for a variety of reasons; holidays, family functions etc. I suspect that cost could also be a Factor. Golf is not a cheap game to play.

The June long weekend is rapidly approaching. This, of course, means that the annual trip to Horsham to lock horns with our Victorians brothers is nigh. This year we are celebrating 60 years of State Cup competition. 1960 was the first year that the Southern Cross Golf Clubs (Vic. and SA) met. That meeting was at Ballarat in October of that year. The Victorians won convincingly. Because the distance that SA needed to travel was far in excess of the Victorians, it was decided to seek a venue which was approximately midway between Adelaide and Melbourne. One or two of the Victorians had contacts in Horsham. Following negotiations with the Horsham Golf Club, that club became the venue for the challenge. Since then we have been visiting Horsham on the June long weekend to continue hostilities. Victoria has won this prestigious trophy, which was donated by the State Board of the Victorian

Knights of the Southern Cross, 35 times. In recent years SA has ten to Victoria’s three.

I am sure that this year’s competition will be as keenly fought as any of the previous 59 years. May all who attend have a most enjoyable time.

KADINAA thought: When things are tough and

making you feel down, ‘Make sure you smile a lot at yourself whenever you are near a mirror.’ (You guessed it — From Pause and Ponder.) That is usually how I begin my day, and along with daily prayers, I can’t ask for much better. A new word I’ve been coming across — POSITIVITY! Have to share a little of my ‘happiness’ too: ‘What do you get when two prams collide? A crèche.’ Hopefully that’s made you smile, not groan or a moan.

Hmm, back to our update! Our March meeting had only four Members present with three apologies (most unusual). However, we had a small source of income from our GTV machine (a little like bingo tickets). Our business was around the final (or Major) draw of the 150 Club over a morning sausage sizzle after Mass at Kadina on March 24. And the lucky winners are listed on the previous page 25 of KL.

We also needed to consider storage of KSC equipment and documents, so we are looking to purchase a steel, lockable cupboard to which we will attach a ‘Key Safe’ with the keys — secure and vermin proof. Members in attendance had the new round of 150 Club tickets distributed for ‘sale’ to our supporters, parishioners, and newcomers. (We do have a few spares at $30 a ticket, you will be in 12 monthly draws of three prizes, and a Major Draw of three prizes. Star of the Sea Home for the Aged at Wallaroo is our major recipient of the profits.

A thoughtful ‘community service’, of sorts. Our Branch agreed, if the opportunity arose, to host visits to our area by Passionist Novices and their mentors. We believe we could manage their day out with morning tea, a tour of our wonderful area, lunch, continue sight-seeing and after a light afternoon tea wish them a safe journey home.

We agreed not to hold an April meeting as it fell on Holy Thursday night and we felt it was more important for Members and their families to take part in the Easter Week ceremonies.

Members represented our Parish and the Good Works of the Knights in the Northern Branches at the Pt Pirie Diocesan Assembly in early April. Bro Mike Turner presented a paper on ‘Leadership’ for the theme ‘Leadership of the Baptised’. What the Knights accomplish, and take responsibilities in / for is worthy of note.

For Members who may be interested and are available, the Northern Country Conference is taking place at Pt Pirie on July 28. Let Pt Pirie/Crystal Brook Branch know you are intending to be there to help with catering. It will be there that we will share the ‘Leadership’ presentation we put forward at the Diocesan Assembly, with the accompanying notes sourced over the last year or so.

Our prayers continue for Fr Adrian, Joan Vanderhorst, Mike and Liz Turner, along with those Members and families who may also be experiencing poor health.

Now, for anyone who needs cheering up —

Did you hear about the not-so-bright shoe repairman? A customer came in with a pair of shoes to be soled, so he sold them.’ And this could only happen to me???Frank went into the railway station and up to the ticket sales window. Looking forward to my day’s outing, I said, May I have a return ticket please? The ticket seller replied, Certainly sir. Where to? I said, with a puzzled look on my face, Back here of course. In conclusion, I share …‘Treasure what you have. Never take God’s gifts for granted.’And many of us speak about the lack of young people attending Mass. We need to work on making sure our young people need to know of God’s love for them in spite of their doubting it.’ (Pause & Ponder)
