YOUTH AT THE HELM

Brian Bird and Ronan Dunne

Last September, Michael Clifford invited two young people to organise activities in the Youth Club. They have proved to be remarkable workers, bubbling over with enthusiasm and very popular with the members. They are Brian Bird and Ronan Dunne and talking with them has renewed my faith in the future and made me realise that in our society today we have many good caring young people of whom we may be proud. Brian Bird and Ronan Dunne, both aged 15, are completely differ-ent and yet very alike in the fact that they give so much time, effort and talents to the Youth Club and in doing so, enrich the lives of the young people of the community.

Brian has lived in Idrone for as long as he can remember. He recalls the happy times he spent in St. Colmcille's School, among them the trips abroad which first gave him an insight into the culture of other lands. He was also lavish in his praise of the teachers, especially Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Gillen. He is now preparing for Inter in the High School, Rathgar.

Brian would like to study medicine and politics and hopes to go to Trinity College. "My great aunt was a doctor", he told me "and my mother was a Social Worker and is very much part of the La Leche League. I broke both my arms once and was very much impressed by the skill of Dr. Fitzpatrick in Harcourt Street Hospital who made such a good job of mending my bones. It was after this that I became interested in Orthopaedics. My father was involved in work with the Simon Community and he was responsible for arousing my interest in

politics. In fact at one time, I was so interested that I decided I would be Taoiseach by the time I was 40! However, I think medicine would come first. Primary Health Care and Education in the Third World would be my aim." He is also a keen member of the High School's Debating Society Team, who recently reached the Final in the School of Economics.

Ronan lives with his father and sister, Ciara, in Idrone. A neighbour of Brian's - they were at school together - he now attends Templeogue College. He is an out and out Sportsman. In fact, he first played Gaelic football at the age of 7, a talent which he inherited from his Dad. He actually played for Dublin in the under 10's. . . When he was 11, Ronan turned over to Soccer, joining Leicester Celtic and continued to play with them for several years.

It was then that Cycling came into his life and from all accounts, this love has come to stay. He is a member of AMEV Irish Road Club, based in Tallaght, a club which is sponsored by AMEV, a Dutch Home Insurance Company. He trains 3 days each week and takes part in a race every Sunday. The distance covered in all these exercises amounts to 150 miles a week! He is the proud possessor of a Peugeot bike which he built himself (helped by his father). It has 10 gears and is probably his most precious possession. Among his successes, he has represented the Mid-Eastern Region at schoolboy level and was presented with a plaque.

Despite the many interests of these two young people, they still have time to devote every Friday evening to the Youth Club. Brian teaches Chess to youngsters from 10 upwards, a hobby which helps to develop themselves and plan ahead. They do the problems printed in the Irish Times. Chess has proved an enormous success and each week gener-ates more enthusiasm. Ronan looks after the 10 to 12 group interested in Soccer. They play 5-a-side indoors and there are usually 8 matches every Friday!

As Young Adult Leaders, these two youths are caring members of our community. We are sure that they are just two of many others who will grow up into people of whom we can all be proud.

L. to. H.: /Ht DE LAN Y FAMILY Front Row: Rowena, Michael Snr., Rosemary, Mary

Back Row: Michael J nr.f Tom Kitt, T.D., John McDermott (Builder) and Mrs. Mc Dermot.

One of the best known landmarks in Knocklyon has to be Delany's Pub. The Delany family have been at the Knocklyon Inn since 1842. At that t ime, the public house sold porter. Guinness, beer, port, spirits and groceries. The grocery side of the business was consider-able and all needs were supplied. Up to the 1930's the public house had a 24-hour licence as travel was slower and travellers and their horses had to be rested and refreshed.

It was during the deep depression in the 1930's that the Bona Fide licence was in operation. This meant that a patron could only stay in a bar after 10 p.m. if he was five miles or more away from his home. A local could not stay in the bar after 10 p.m. and travell-ers could stay on or arrive at the premises and drink until midnight. In 1940, the 24-hour licence was curtailed to midnight.

Because of the Bona Fide licence, people continued to travel from the city and surrounds to partake of Delany's hospitality, people like Brendan Behan, Patrick Kavanagh, Myles Na Gopaleen,' Noel Purcell, Augustine Mart in, Jack Doyle, J immy O'Dea, Dave Allen and Austin Clarke, to name a few.

The licensing laws changed in 1960 and the Bona Fide was abolished. This meant that 85% of the business had gone. But all was not lost because a " l imited restaurant certif icate" was issued to those interested. This meant that the public house could stay open until 12.30 a.m. provided the patrons had partaken of a substantial meal. The Delany family worked this l imited licence for eighteen years and were famous, especially for their chicken suppers. During this period many of the patrons came f rom all parts of Dublin. As yet there was little or no development in Knocklyon, Firhouse or Tallaght.

In the 1960's the night life in Dublin was not as it is today so it was quite the thing to go to the countryside to one of the bars with a late licence. This attracted many more famous people from the film, music and political worlds to the now famous "Delany's".

In the 1970's house building started in the immediate area. First Firhouse was developed, then Knocklyon. By then, the people in the newly developed areas had blended in with the older residents, giving a community spirit that would be hard to equal. A t the present time there are f i f th , sixth and seventh generation customers coming to the premises.

On Monday, May 7th 1990, Tom Kit t officially opened the New Delany's. The premises have been extended and refurbished

and are very pleasing and comfortable. It still promises to provide a great atmosphere, which is what has made Delany's so famous for almost 150 years.

K N O C K L Y O N G O L F S O C I E T Y With 4 2 points off a handicap of 21, the overall winner of Knocklyon Golf Society's last outing to Lucan on April 24 was also the young-est member of the Society - Esmond Butler. It was some achieve-ment given that the heavens opened soon after the outing started and stayed open for most of the afternoon.

Sponsored by Lister Tubes (Eddie Kellett) there was a full turn-out on the day with most players staying on for the meal

First Nine: Austin O'Hanlon (18) 25; 2nd Nine Derek Morrin (27) 22. Visitor Ray Dempsey (20) 37 (on back nine).

"Woodman spare that tree

The Summer arrived early this year, thank God, remember late Apr i l , early May. In the meantime we have reverted, on and o f f , to the more tradit ional Irish summer weather. Yet somehow, there would seem to be an expectation of another good summer — prompted, I expect in part by last year's welcome experience.

But what about that worry ing "Greenhouse" factor? While there is much room for improvement in attitudes, we are however surely, if s lowly, becoming more aware, and the conviction is growing, that we would all do well to be much more careful in our use of the good earth.

Yet, old attitudes die hard. We still see, for instance, papers, cigarette packets, beer cans, etc., tossed out of mov-ing cars. The same mental i ty helps to destroy public am-enities such as beaches, parks, streets and highways, w i th l i tter and graff i t i .

A t a deeper and more serious level most of us are in vary-ing degrees, guilty. We do not have to be scientists to under-stand the basic problem of Global Warming brought about by the greenhouse effect - this wi l l not trouble our l itter etc. minded merchants too much, but responsible people should be worried.

Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases act like the glass in a greenhouse. These gases radiate back some of the sun's heat, which would otherwise be lost to outer space, and wi thout them our planet would be very cold — so Carbon Dioxide and Co. play a vital role maintaining the earth's heat balance.

Now we come on stage, and in various ways are actually contr ibut ing to distorting this balance, through a dramatic rise in the level of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse" gases. If unchecked the earth's temperature wil l rise 3 degrees centigrade in the next 100 years leading to f looding, freak weather and widespread famine conditions. There are two easily understood ways in which many of us are at fault. Uncontrolled and wasteful use of fossil fuel-generated energy is a major cause of the trouble. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and petrol are in reality remains of dead organisms, containing carbon absorbed mil l ions of years ago - . t h rough excessive use this carbon is released in great quantities into the atmosphere as the "greenhouse" gas of carbon dioxide. Forests absorb carbon dioxide. The great forest areas in the wor ld are being plundered by man in unthinking callous greed - when destroyed the forests can no longer perform their vital funct ion. Back home we are far f rom innocent regarding our forest and tree life. We would do well to remember that every tree saved and every tree planted, helps to reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Here, man as usual tends to be heartless, greedy, grasping. God however remains ever compassionate, loving, caring — and "On ly God can make a tree".

THE ARTS A N D CRAFTS CLUB During the Eastern holidays some of the teachers ran an Arts and Crafts Club in the school prefabs. Mrs. O'Gara and Ms. Roche organised the fantastic club and Mr. Ruddy and Mr. O'Gara helped to make it such a success. The club was divided into four groups — according to age. During the five glorious days, we made portfol ios to hold our works of art.

On the last day, there was an exhibi t ion where parents could come and admire the art. They were highly impressed by the week's work . Some children got prizes for their efforts.

I would not have missed the Club for the wor ld. Catriona O'Reilly

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS Senior Hurling: The two senior panels have been very active recently w i th plenty of games, training sessions etc. The 'A' team were pipped for a place in the Herald Cup semi-final and now have their sights set on the Herald Cup Special. The most improved player award must go to Rory Costello (Cremorne), closely fol lowed by Brian Murray, (Dargle Wood) and Donal Fitzpatrick ( Idrone). The 'B' team are unbeaten so far in their league and have had some excellent victories due largely to the sound goalkeeping of Neil Keane (Coolamber) and the skill of Niall Clancy (Scholarstown), and Fergal Byrne (Ashton).

Well done to the forty players on the panels who have trained very diligently.

Junior Hurling: Our Junior 'A' hurling team competed in the Educational Cup (Division 1) for the first t ime this year. In doing so we competed against the top schools in the city and while to date only one game has been won, the players have performed very well and have shown they have the skill to match the best. There is no doubt that w i th a little more experience Barry Condron, Eddie McAuley , Patrick Sherry, John Dunne, Stephen Butterly, Ciaran Doyle and David Connery wil l be able to match their rivals in all aspects of play. Well done to a group of players who put in a lot of effort throughout the year.

Camogie: Congratulations to the camogie team who have made it to the final of their league, for a second year in a row. We have had a very enjoy-able season, trained hard and had some fun along the way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank (1) the girls for their deter-mination and commitment and (2) the parents who have supported us and made themselves available to provide lifts to our away games.

The final is fixed for Wednesday June 6th in O'Toole Park, Crumlin. Your support would be welcome.

Tiglin Adventure Centre: Pupils from 6th class (Mr. P. O'Neill 's) and 5th class (Mr. Connolly's) are off to Tiglin Adventure Centre, Co. Wicklow at the end of May for a few days of rock-climbing, canoeing, orienteering etc. It should be fun, particularly as Mr. P. O'Neil l is not a renowned swimmer and Mr. Connolly hates heights.

Photo Call: Some boys and girls f rom St. Colmcilles were featured on the sports page of the Irish Independent recently wi th Maurice Pratt of Quinns-worth at the launch of the new G .A .A . championship posters. Noelle Moran was considered particularly photogenic by observers nationwide!

n n WHAT A PRIZE!

Last September , Superquinn ran a compet i t ion in conjunc-tion with the Round the World Yacht Race.

Imagine my surprise when Fergal Quinn phoned to say that we were the lucky winners of a trip to Florida.

We set off for Orlando on 30th April. Superquinn had booked us into a beaut i fu l hotel with all amenities. Fort if ied by an enormous breakfast each morning, we spent three days trying in vain to sample all the delights that Disney World has to of fer , re turning footsore each evening to enjoy the comfor ts of our hotel .

On the Thursday we left for Fort Lauderdale. Our hotel was situated on the beach so we relaxed af ter our hectic stay in Orlando. We were at the pier to see the yachts depart on the final leg of the race. It was a sight to remem-ber — NCB Ireland and twenty- two other magnificent yachts in full sail, heading out to the open sea.

We look forward to seeing NCB Ireland at closer quarters on her re turn to Dun Laoghaire on 10th J u n e .

Our sincere thanks to Superquinn for a truly memorable t r iP- Sheila Ebbs
