Knoll Crest Farm is firmly committed to delivering service with each bull. We conduct our business in a manner that demands providing only the very best genetics for our valued customers. Along with “value-added” genetics, we provide “value-added” service.

Knoll Crest shall receive salvage value, if there is any. Purchaser agrees to have bulls examined (or autopsied) by a licensed veterinarian and notify Knoll Crest immediately. The insurance is to be redeemed in the form of a replacement bull, if available, or a credit on future Knoll Crest bull purchases.

BULL PICK UP AND DELIVERY: Pick up your bull on sale day or within 7 days and receive a $50 discount on each bull purchased. You will receive this discount at checkout time. For bulls that require delivery, we guarantee that freight will not exceed $250 per head to anywhere in the continental US.

WINTERING OF BULLS: Knoll Crest will winter your bulls until March 2 at no cost. This will allow producers to buy bulls for future use and not have to take possession until Spring.

VOLUME DISCOUNTS: Buyers purchasing 2 or more bulls will receive a volume discount as follows: 2 bulls - 2%, 3 bulls - 3%, 4 bulls - 4%, 5 or more bulls -5 %.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE 2014-2015: For taxation purposes, it may be beneficial for some customers to pay for cattle after January 1, 2015. Therefore, we will gladly accept payment at sale (2014) or by January 10, 2015.

SEMEN INTEREST: Knoll Crest Farm will retain a 1/3 semen interest in every bull selling. In reality, this will affect only a very few bulls that sell. KCF reserves the right to collect semen at KCF’s cost and the buyers’ convenience. KCF retains 1/3 of the semen revenue rights for each bull. The buyer owns 100% possession and 100% salvage value.

Bull DeVelOPMeNT aND CONTeMPORaRY gROuPiNgWeaning weights (for 205 day adjusted weights) were taken in May, approximately 30 days prior to weaning. Bulls were weaned on pasture and

hay. The “test period” was from early June to early October. For that period, bulls continued to graze in 15-30 acre pastures, had access to grass hay and free-choice bull developer composed primarily of commodity ingredients, corn and an intake-limiting ingredient from Purina.

The yearling weights are lighter than in years past, but we are confident the bulls are healthier, sounder, and better prepared for the breeding season without need for extra supplementation.

The bulls were divided into several contemporary groups for “ratioing” purposes at weaning and yearling. They were grouped by breed, and pre-weaning location and management. ET bulls were put into separate contemporary groups. Our goal is to minimize confusion, while practicing sound genetic evaluation principals. Please give Paul a call if you have questions.

We want to make it easy for you to attend our sale, so we are offering several options that will meet your individual needs:

ANGUS $VALUESThe use of multi-trait selection indexes as tools for commercial cow-calf operators and seedstock breeders is rapidly evolving in the beef industry. Selection indexes are a tool to select for several traits at once. An index approach takes into account genetic and economic values to select for economic merit. A multi-trait index approach can be contrasted to single-trait selection or independent culling levels. An index is challenging to develop, but the end result is easy to use, adding simplicity and convenience of a multi-trait approach. The Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) currently available through the American Angus Association, along with numerous individual performance measures, can become overwhelming. Weaned Calf Value ($W), Feedlot Value ($F), Grid Value ($G) and Beef Value ($B) are bioeconomic values, expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. Also, a Cow Energy Value ($EN) is available for fine-tuning the cow herd.$Values encompass the revenue generated from genetically derived outputs and associated costs (expenses) from required inputs. $Values only have meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. Each sire listed in this report is comparable to every other sire. The $Values are sensitive to the assumptions for the industry-relevant components used in calculating the indexes. As with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed. Thus, a $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. Also, averages and percentile breakdowns are provided for $Values as reference points for the Angus database. A $Value of 0 does not correlate to the lowest ranking or to an average animal.

$VALUES - Weaned Calf Value ($W)Weaned Calf $Value ($W) quantifies four primary economic impact areas:1. Birth Weight - birth weight influences on calf death losses related

to dystocia, weaned calf crop percentage, and resulting revenue per cow.

2. Weaning Weight - direct growth impact on weaning weight revenue (pre-weaning growth and pounds of calf sold) and energy requirements and related costs to necessary to support pre-weaning calf growth.

3. Maternal Milk - revenue from calf pre-weaning growth and pounds of calf sold as influenced by varying cow milk levels, and costs related to lactation energy requirements.

4. Mature Cow Size - expense adjustments are made for maintenance energy as related to differing mature cow size, including mathematical linkages between mature weight and yearling weight.

The impact areas are combined into a bio-economic value expressed in dollars per head assigned to Angus genetics from birth through weaning. Resources used to form the Wean Calf Value ($W) include

National Research Council (NRC), US Meat and Animal Research Center (USMARC), Cattle-Fax, SPA and university cow-calf budgets, and the American Angus Association performance database.$Values only have meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. $W provides the expected dollar-per-head difference in future progeny preweaning performance in a multi-trait fashion, within a typical U.S. beef cowherd. If Bull A has a $W of +25.00 and Bull B has a $W of +15.00, and these sires were randomly mated to a comparable set of females and the calves were exposed to the same environment, and a normal number of replacement females were saved from both sires, on average you could expect Bull A’s progeny to have a +10.00 per head advantage in pre-weaning value over Bull B’s progeny (25.00 - 15.00 = +10.00 per head). As with any $Value, $W only has meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. As with other $Values, the Weaned Calf Value includes assumptions, as listed below:

Base Calf Price $145 per cwtCow/Heifer Mix 80%/20%Cow Weight 1300 lbFeed energy cost $.090 per MCal NEm

$VALUES - Beef Value ($B)Beef Value ($B) facilitates what almost every beef breeder is already seeking - simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit, based on dollars and cents. $B represents the expected average dollar-per-head difference in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: $F and $G. To align $B with marketplace realities and appropriately value carcass weight in Angus cattle, the following factors are incorporated into the final calculations for $B.$B is not simply the sum of $F and $G.Projected carcass weight and its value are calculated, along with production cost differences.$B takes into consideration any discount for heavyweight carcasses.Final adjustments are made to prevent double-counting weight between feedlot and carcass segments. The resulting $B value is not designed to be driven by one factor, such as quality, red meat yield or weight. Instead, it is a dynamic result of the application of commercial market values to Angus genetics for both feedlot and carcass merit.

AVAILABILITY OF $VALUES• $Values on individual animals may be viewed at at www.angus.org.

Members and affiliates can also access $Values through AAA Login.• An interactive application for Custom $Values ($W, $F, $G, $B) is

available for members and affiliates through AAA Login. Users can customize the economic components to create tailored within-herd $Values for their given scenario. The Custom $Values are designed for within-herd use in assisting commercial bull buyers producing to a specified market.

economic Selection indexes: a Tool for Successful Sire SelectionIn 2005 the American Hereford Association (AHA) introduced four profit indexes. These indexes allow Hereford members and their commercial customers to select sires that maximize profit under different production situations. The indexes are formulated on general representations of beef production systems used in the U.S. and consider a group of economically relevant traits that characterize those systems. Relative economic values for this group of traits are paired with expected progeny differences (EPDs) to produce a dollar ($) index value. The difference in the $ value of the index predicts the difference in profit potential.Selection index technology is nothing new. The original scientific paper describing the technique was published in 1943. For decades, swine and dairy breeders have used values such as sow productivity index and type-production index to select animals that excel in several traits. Beef breed associations in Australia have used index selection for several years, and a number of other U.S. beef breed associations publish various index values as part of their genetic evaluation programs. While other breeds have only terminal sire indexes, Hereford has developed three maternal indexes in addition to a terminal index. The four Hereford indexes are:Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) – This is an index to maximize profit for commercial cow-calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows. Retained ownership of calves through the feedlot phase of production is maintained and the cattle are to be marketed on a CHB pricing grid.Brahman Influence Index (BII$) – This index utilizes Hereford bulls in a rotational crossbreeding system with Brahman. This index emphasizes fertility and age at puberty and less on growth. Because Brahman cattle are not used in the CHB program, a commodity pricing grid is used.Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) – This is a terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are used on British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB pricing grid. There is no emphasis on milk or fertility since all cattle will be terminal. This index promotes growth and carcass.Calving Ease Index (CEZ$) – This index is used to select bulls that will be used in a heifer program. This index has increased emphasis on direct and maternal calving ease.Real-world scenarioEconomic selection indexes allow cattle producers to select animals with the most favorable combination of EPDs to maximize profit in a given situation. As an example, EPDs for four fictitious Hereford bulls are listed in Table 1. Of these four sires, which would be expected to generate the most profit in a rotational crossbreeding program, when mated to Angus-cross cows and heifers? Each of the four bulls excels in at least one economically important trait. Bull A is the most favorable for scrotal circumference, an indicator of early puberty and increased lifetime female fertility. Bull B has the most favorable combination of calving ease and growth, but is less desirable than breed average for both fat and ribeye area. The bull with the highest milk and intramuscular fat (IMF) EPDs is C, but he is the least desirable for calving ease. In contrast Bull D is the calving-ease sire of the group, but is only average for growth, and in the bottom 5% of active sires for IMF.The answer to this question is found by comparing the index values in Table 2. Bull B would be expected to sire the most profitable calves for this scenario, slightly better than A, and significantly better than D or C. His BMI$ value is the highest of the four bulls. His calves should generate $2.14 more profit per head, compared with A ($25.35 – 23.12 = $2.23), and $19.86 more profit per head than C. If B and C each produce 25 calves per year for four years, a producer should realize $1,986 more profit using B compared to C, including the cow herd contributions of daughters of B compared with daughters of C (25 calves X 4 years X $19.86 per head = $1,986).Note that each of the four bulls is best for one of the indexes. While B is an excellent choice for the scenario just discussed, he would be only second best as

a terminal sire (CHB$) or a sire of heifer bulls (CEZ$). When crossed with Brahman-influenced females, A would be a somewhat better choice (BII$), largely the result of his high scrotal circumference EPD. Bull C’s favorable carcass genetics make him the most profitable terminal sire, while D is the best choice as a sire of heifer bulls, given his genetic values for calving ease.Selection vs. iClsSelection on index values is more effective than using independent culling levels (ICLs) in a computer sire sort. Often breeders set minimum and maximum values for several EPDs, then select among those sires that meet all those criteria. As an illustration, consider a Hereford seedstock breeder whose bull customers typically cross Hereford bulls on Angus-based cows. The Hereford breeder might decide to seek artificial insemination (AI) sires that are in the top 25% of active sires for calving ease, weaning weight, milk, scrotal circumference and intramuscular fat. A sort on the AHA Web site might provide a list of bulls like that found in Table 3.But are those the most profitable bulls for this scenario? Not necessarily. In particular, sire sorts eliminate any animal that fails to meet even one of the given criteria, even by a very small amount. What if the producer had lowered their criteria slightly? They might have found more bulls, some of which were significantly better overall. In Table 4, the same three bulls are listed, plus one who fails to meet the original criteria for one trait by a small amount. In Table 4 sire H is the most profitable for the situation, even though he failed to meet the initial criteria set by the producer. His direct calving ease EPD was lower than desired, but only by a small amount. That deficiency is offset by a superior combination of weaning weight, scrotal circumference and IMF EPDs giving him the highest BMI$ value. Rather than setting minimums, index selection allows favorable EPDs for one trait to compensate for less favorable EPDs in another. Indexes identify animals with the overall most profitable genetic profile. However, like any tool, selection indexes must be used carefully to avoid undesired results. While independent culling levels tend to select animals that are close to average for a large number of traits, indexes may identify animals that are rather extreme in their genetic values. Because indexes do allow one trait to compensate for another, they can select animals that are extremely favorable for a single trait, and somewhat undesirable for several others. Producers should scrutinize the individual EPDs of top index sires to be sure all EPD values are within an acceptable range. This is especially important for selecting calving ease sires for commercial herds. While the CEZ$ value does heavily emphasize direct and maternal calving ease, commercial producers selecting heifer bulls should continue to set minimum levels for those EPDs. The CEZ$ index identifies the most profitable animals for producing heifer bulls over several generations, but a sire can have a favorable CEZ$ value if its other traits are desirable enough to offset a marginal calving ease EPD.As breeders begin to study index values for their animals, it will become apparent that milk EPD has little effect on any of the index values. In fact milk EPD is ignored in CHB$; that index identifies the best terminal sires, so milk is irrelevant. For the others, the economic value of increased milk, while small, is negative. No doubt some breeders will find this puzzling, as most beef breeds have selected for increased milk EPD over the last decade. However, economic research shows that once a cow provides adequate milk for her calf to meet its needs for health, maintenance and growth, additional milk is an economic liability, not an asset. Heavier milking cows have higher feed requirements, even when dry. If producers reduce the feed requirements per cow, they can increase herd size without acquiring additional land or purchased feed, and increase profit to the overall enterprise. However, if commercial bull customers insist their bulls have a minimum milk EPD, seedstock producers may want to continue to set a minimum milk value for AI sires, then select the top index sires with a milk EPD of that level or higher.

Hybrids. it started with single cross corn; it has dominated broiler and swine production, the state conservation department releases hybrid game fish, and now the car companies are promoting hybrids. All for the same reason; there are advantages to hybrids.

The movement to hybrid seedstock in beef production is in its infancy and increased usage in commercial beef production is inevitable. Why…because hybrids simplify many of the challenges a commercial beef producer faces and increase profitability. Hybrids also stabilize breed composition; in turn that provides more, not less, consistency in a calf crop.

I remember sitting in Beef Production class and a number of Animal Breeding classes while the professor diagramed crossbreeding systems for beef production. I caught myself wondering how anyone could sleep though such a stimulating lecture. It’s all about heterosis, breed complementarity, maternal heterosis and potentially utilizing terminal breeds, what could be better? I’ve since figured out it was all about maximizing complexity, ignoring simplicity and real-world application…the smartest students may have been the ones napping.

Let’s take a look at a basic two-breed rotation. The textbook model assumes that you’ll have bulls of each breed and separate your cows into two breeding groups based on their sire breed. In big herds, where it is feasible, it requires extra labor to sort cows and calves, making sure you don’t split a pair, and it doesn’t fit with improved management practices like rotational grazing. The three-breed textbook model, to take full advantage of maternal heterosis, is just one step more complicated.

The Crossbreeding RealityThe reality approach in most herds is to buy a bull of one breed use him two

years and then replace him with one from the second breed. This is especially true in small, single herd sire cowherds, but for simplicity even many big herds rotate breeds every other year. Keeping replacement females every cycle in this system means the resulting calf crop has a variety of percentages, from 50% and up, of the sire breed used in that cycle.

How does that provide consistency? The temptation might be to consider straight breeding commercial cows.

But the merits of crossbreeding are too great for a commercial cattleman to ignore. Crossbreeding provides heterosis in many traits but in particular the traits that are the most difficult to apply selection pressure for improvement. Cow longevity, lifetime productivity and calf survivability, are examples where heterosis can give a 25 percent or higher advantage.

The heterosis advantages in growth and milk are smaller, and in carcass traits we see little hybrid vigor. In these traits breed complementarity, combining breeds with offsetting strengths and weaknesses comes to play.

The Balancer® AdvantageAs a commercial producer, if I had straight-bred or high-percentage British

cattle, I’d use Gelbvieh bulls until I had some Gelbvieh influence in a majority of my cowherd. At that point, I’d switch to Balancers® to stabilize the level of Gelbvieh and British in my herd at a desirable level.

Under this scenario, the skeptics argue that somehow the parent breeds will genetically segregate in the offspring, yielding more variability, but this just isn’t the case. Consistency in the calf crop comes from the progeny being very similar in breed composition.

The data from the Gelbvieh Alliance and Meat Animal Research Center agree that combining continental and British influence at the right levels pay big dividends in feed efficiency and targeting a desirable, and profitable, level of Yield and Quality grades.

In the pasture, Gelbvieh influence in your cowherd that will provide great fertility, milk and growth, while keeping mature cow size in check.

There is a reason commercial beef producers appreciate the advantages of Balancer bulls. They take the headaches out of crossbreeding, provide heterosis, and let producers focus on the windows of acceptability for feedlot performance and end product merit. Balancers are the easy shortcut to profitability.

Gillespie Cove Farm, Inc. is a 500 herd cow/calf operation which is located on 3,000 acres in the Cove section of Tazewell County, Virginia. Gillespie Cove Farm has been continuously operated since its founding in 1780. Currently under the management of 7th generation family member, Bill Gillespie, the farm has established a reputation for quality calves.

Bill Gillespie, born and raised on Gillespie Farm, returned to full time farming 25 years ago. At that time, there were 187 cows on the farm plus some sheep and hogs. The sheep and hogs were phased out and plans were implemented to increase the size of the farm plus cow herd. In searching for a seed stock producer, Gillespie met other producers who suggested Knoll Crest Farm. Bill attended his first Knoll Crest Bull Sale in 1994 and has been a regular at each of the semi-annual sales.

The farm has been purchasing Knoll Crest Farm genetics for the last 20 plus years. “Since transitioning to Knoll Crest’s genetics, we have seen a tremendous increase in the quality of our calves. When we receive feedlot closeout data, our calves are always at the top for Prime and CAB. Knoll Crest’s guarantee is the best in the business and it’s been a great help to us. The Bennetts are such reputable folk and anytime we have a problem with a bull, we just have to give James or Paul a call and they will come up with a solution. Many producers in our area purchase from Knoll Crest.”

Purchasing bulls from Knoll Crest has helped the Gillespie Cove Operation achieve their genetic goals over the years. “Each year, as we’re trying to improve our herd, we may need a bull to increase milk or yearling weights and by using Knoll Crest genetics we know we will have a good selection of quantity and quality. If you have good quality, marketability will follow.”

Arthur Marrs, Farm supervisor, better known as “Red” is nearing retirement.

Red has worked on Gillespie Cove Farm for 50 years. Red has shared with Dalton Bennett that he has not missed a Knoll Crest sale in the past 30 years. We would like to thank Red for his continued attendance and support of our program and the friendship that has grown over his 30 years of sale attendance.

Gillespie Cove Farm now has the eighth and ninth generation of their family interested in maintaining the tradition and operation of Gillespie Cove Farm. Plans include DNA and other testing with continued improvement in calf quality and growth, with Knoll Crest bulls being an integral part of the future.

No way could my father have known or imagined the influence of his vision to start a seedstock cattle operation in 1944 would have on the future of Knoll Crest Farm, people and cattle. Although, based on a statement shared with me by a neighbor shortly after Dad’s death in 1966, maybe he did. In driving past the farm our neighbor had stopped after seeing dad in the process of digging up a large tree stump in a crop field with a hand held grubbing hoe. He said dad’s shirt was wet with sweat indicating the manpower that had gone into the effort. His comment to dad was, “Paul, you won’t live long enough to get a return on the investment of the sweat you have put into removing that stump.” Dad’s reply was, “But my son won’t have to work around it.”

My father’s common sense and concern for the future developed a foundation for a sustainable family farm that has been enjoyed by and benefited four generations and hopefully more to come. Now living in a country with a $17 trillion plus debt that is being passed down to my grandchildren, my question is, “What has happened to the common sense and concern for the future our founding fathers had in developing the foundation for what they envisioned to be a sustainable country?”

The decision to start a registered Hereford herd in 1944 came during the era that ‘Hereford was king.’ The other two beef breeds of less significance at that time were Angus and Shorthorn. The continental breeds were foreign cattle still in foreign lands. Probably the greatest challenge in starting a Hereford herd was starting with registered Polled cattle. The long established Hereford breed that dates back to the mid 1700’s were horned cattle. The development of Polled Hereford cattle and registrations thereof started in the early 1900’s. The rivalry and resentment from long-time horned Hereford breeders added to the challenge. Some of the more prominent Horned Hereford herds were in Virginia. Contrary to the trend or popular opinion back then, dad’s decision to go polled has been proven to be right. Today there are very few Horned Hereford cattle east of the Mississippi River.

A one bull size commercial cow herd (25-35) had been a part of our primary tobacco farm since dad purchased the farm in 1929; the bull was a registered Polled Hereford. The discussion and planning that led to the purchase of four bred registered Polled Hereford cows started an enterprise that has generated enthusiasm, interest,

excitement, challenges, therapy, and income that has invited and rewarded four generations of our family.

Over the past 70 years, I have seen several trends come and go in purebred cattle. These trends or changes usually start based on a needed change. The trend becomes the driving force and is continued beyond accomplishing the needed change.

We had gotten in the registered cattle business during the trend of making cattle small, short, and fat. Back then the cattle shows were the primary means of educating purebred breeders. This trend was led with champions and blue ribbons going to the fat, short, and

small cattle probably in the 2-3 frame sizes. Later mother nature red-flagged the trend when these cattle started producing dwarf calves.

The change and trend over the next 30+ years to fix the short, small cattle made them tall and big leading to large birth weights, dead calves, and some cows with very little milk. I was at a ring side when a panel of three judges made a 9+ frame Polled Hereford bull National Champion in the 1980’s. Fortunately cattle have biological limits that protect purebred cattle from some of its breeders.

Somehow I find sharing my experience from 60+ years ago similar to a cow ‘chewing a cud.’ A cow eats grass, swallows it, then regurgitates it and gets more value out of it the second time.

Much of learning what I know in the seed stock cattle business started early in life learning what I didn’t know. Let me share one such experience.

In 1950, I attended my first National Polled Hereford Show and Sale at Louisville, KY with my father. Although we had bred Polled Herefords, this was the first time I had been exposed to the Polled

Hereford industry (people and cattle) at this level. I still say it was one of the most enjoyable and educational experiences I have ever had. Dad enjoyed it too. You very well know that kind of cattle we saw – short, fat, and up to their bellies in straw – but they were winners.

During this time at the national show, we arranged with George Palmer, of Charlottesville, Virginia, to buy a young bull from Riverdale Farm for use in our small herd of registered Polled Hereford cattle. A few days after returning home from the show, we drove to Riverdale Farm to select our new bull. George had 20-25 of these young bulls in a small lot and gave us the privilege of picking one at a given price. My father suggested that each of us select the bull of our choice before discussing them. After spending some time going through the bulls, each of us pointed out the bull we had chosen for our next herd bull. We had picked the two extremes; my bull being the shortest, thickest, and fattest in the group. Having just gotten back from the national show, he looked like a modern bull to me. The bull dad chose was thick, long-body, longer head, and probably a 4-5 frame which would have been considered leggy. I remember “leggy” as being probably the most negative comment you could make about a beef animal at that time. It is needless to go into the discussion and hassle that went on until we loaded the bull of dad’s selection.

Somehow, it was a long trip home without much conversation between us. After assuring my father that I meant no disrespect, I asked him just what he had learned at the national show, considering the bull he had chosen. His answer was, “Maybe nothing even though I enjoyed the trip and the people.” In time, the bull he selected proved to put us two generations ahead of the bull I would have chosen. Time has caused me to have great respect for my father as a cattleman, especially for his ability to attend a National Polled Hereford Show and Sale in the early 1950’s and not learn a thing.

Video Auction FormatThe 2014 Knoll Crest Bull Sale will have a new video format. In this

day and age with the technology available we feel we can still have a “live” auction without a bull standing in the ring. This will allow us to place less stress on livestock and the crew handling them. Instead, we will have video footage of each and every bull prerecorded to play in the sale ring as the bulls are auctioned off.

Video footage of the bulls will be available on www.knollcrestfarm.com after November 15. Bulls will be sorted and available for viewing on sale day. If you would like to view the bulls at the farm prior to the sale day, please give us a call and we would be glad to accommodate your request.

Live audio and prerecorded video footage will also be available on www.LiveAuctions.TV for buyers to bid on that are unable to be at the auction on sale day. We will also be providing our telo-auction service as we have in years past.
