KNOW DR. B. SHIVASHANKAR

Dr. B. Shivashankar did his under-graduation from Karnatak Medical College, Hubli and Post-Graduation in Orthopaedic Surgery from Dr. Vaishampayan Medical College, Solapur through All India PG entrance. He finished his MS in January 1992 and subsequently worked in Bombay Hospital, Mumbai under stalwarts likeDr. K. T. Dholakia, Dr. J. C. Taraporewala,Dr. C. G. Pradhan, Dr. H. R. Jhunjhunwala, Dr. M. L. Saraf, and Dr. Jawahar Pachore for specialized training in Joint Replacements and worked almost for an year in 1993 as Lecturer at Dr.V.M.Medical College Solapur before going abroad for further training in Iso Elastic Hips at Birminham under Mr. Salman Ali and in Trauma & Trabacular Hips at Katherine Hospital, Stuttgart under Dr. Ulrich Holz. Since O c to b e r 1 9 9 4 h e i s r u n n i n g I ye r Orthopaedic Centre at Solapur. The only Orthopaedic Hospital in this region to be certified with ISO in the past 12 years.

Dr. B. Shivashankar was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in 1994 to do femoral interlocking nailing. Due to the various problems of, poor working of C-Arm, the high radiation required for doing this surgery and the non-availability of memory in C-Arm machines being marketed then, he came out with Guide Wire Sounding Technique of Interlocking nailing, which subsequently became popular and known everywhere as “Solapur Technique”. Dr. B. Shivashankar presented this innovative technique paper for the first time in WIROC Mumbai in 1995. Following this he was invited to show this surgery live to a group of Orthopaedic Surgeons at Latur, arranged by Dr. Shrikant Gore, at Gore Hospital Latur. Since then there is no looking back in the popularity of Dr. B. Shivashankar who has been conducting 15 to 20 live surgeries every year at different parts of India. In the last year itself, he has conducted live surgeries of Interlocking Nailing at Silchar (Assam), Akola (Maharashtra), Sikar (Rajasthan), R N Copper Medical College, Mumbai (Operative Nailing Course), Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore (Ganga Operative Trauma Course), Sancheti Hospital, Pune (Pune Trauma Course), KEM Hospital, Mumbai (WIROC 2016), Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh) and many more to name a few.

'Dr. Shiva' has innovated many techniques and

instruments and has named all of them by

“Solapur”. Like, Solapur Guide Wire Sounding

Technique of Interlocking Nailing with out X-Ray

or C-Arm, Solapur Sleeve for key hole surgeries of

Femur, Solapur Condylar Screw, Solapur Sleeve

and Modified Instruments for Key Hole DHS,

Solapur Broken Nail extractor, Solapur Type of

External Fixator for Distal Radius, etc. Recently his

technique of reducing unstable hip fractures with

Steinmann pin and K wires has been popularly

known as 'Shiva's Technique' by his vast followers.

Dr. Shivashankar's name is synonymous in India

with Interlocking Nailing. He has a passion for

teaching. In-spite of being in private practice since

beginning, he has conducted innumerable

workshops since 1997 at Nagpur, Bilapsur,

Chandigarh, Agra, Amalapuram, Amaravati,

Aurangabad, Barielly, Coimbatore, Dehradun,

Dhule, Eluru, Gorakhpur, Islampur, Jabalpur,

Jalgaon, Kota, Kanpur, Kakinada, Kolkata, Panaji,

Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sambhalpur,

Solapur, Sidhpur, Silchar, Thrissur, Tiruvalla,

Vishakapatnam, etc. He has conducted live

operative demonstrations at places from

Chandigarh in north to Coimbatore in South,

Mumbai in West to Silchar Assam in east. His

operative techniques are available in over 20 CDs.

Which many follow regularly . He is known as

Interlocking Man of India. Dr. B. Shivashankar's

operative techniques are available in over 20 Cds

and also on you Tube. He has written papers in

various international journals and also chapters

on Interlocking nailing in many books.

Dr. B. Shivashankar along with Dr. Rajat Varma

(Then Indore) and Dr.V.M.Iyer (Then Banglore)

conducted interlocking workshops across India

between 1997 to 2000. To discuss the problems of

Interlocking faced in India, Dr. Rajat Varma

proposed the idea to form an association. Thus

the concept of forming NAILS was born. Dr. B.

Shivashankar was one of the trio in forming NAILS

association along with Dr. Rajat Varma from

Indore ( Now in London) and Dr. V. M Iyer in 2000.

The ad-hoc body was declared at NAILSCON 2001

at Indore and was officially installed by then IOA

President, Dr. G. S. Kulkarni in NAILSCON 2002 at

Banglore. Dr. B. Shivashankar was founder Joint

Secretary, subsequently became Secretary and

was its President in 2008-09. He delivered the

prestigious NAILSCON Oration in Kolkata in 2009.

Recently in 2016, he successfully organised

NAILSCON 2016 at Solapur attended by over 450

delegates from across India.

Dr. Shiva has served in many capacities in the

executive committee of Maharshtra Orthopaedic

Association. He was the Grievance cell in charge as

well as In charge of Scientific Committees of

MOACONs during his Executive committee

tenure. He was one of the youngest President of

Maharashtra Orthopaedic Association in 2015-16.

Under his presidentship, Solapur Orthopaedic

Association had Organsied a memorable

MOACON 2015 at Solapur. Dr. B. Shivashankar

delivered the Dr. Sharad Chaudhari Oration of

MOA in 2016 at Aurangabad.

Over the years Dr. Shivashankar has been invited

to attend various State, National & International

Conferences as Faculty. He has attended the State

Conferences of Maharshtra, Karnataka, Andhara

Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh,

Gujarat, Rajasthan Delhi, Uttarkhanad, Uttar

Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chatisgarh, Bihar, West

Bengal etc as Guest Faculty or Invited Speaker.

S ince Jabalpur IOACON in 1998, Dr . B .

Shivashankar has attended all the subsequent

IOACONs as Faculty & has conducted workshops

in few of them. He is a regular Speaker at almost all

the national Trauma Meets like Traumacon and

Trauma Current Concepts. He has also attended

many international meets in India and abroad Like

SICOT in Mumbai in 1993,SAARC Nation's Ortho

Meet at Nepal in 1995, APOA Meet at Singapore in

2002, SAARC and BOSCON in Dhaka in 2005,

SICOT 2011 at Pattaya. American Academy in 2012

at San Francisco and at Las Vegas in 2015 to name

a few well-known Orthopaedic meetings. Dr.

Shivashankar has delivered the Prestigious

Dr.T.P.Srivastava Oration of UP Chapter of IOA at

Moradabad in 2015. He has also delivered the

Varanasi City Club Annual Oration in the same

name of Dr.T.P. Srivastava in 2016.

Dr. B. Shivashankar is an active member of IMA

Solapur. He was Secretary in the year 1996-97 and

Treasurer in 2008-09. He is in the governing body

almost every year. He along with other office

bearers for the first t ime organised an

International Tour for IMA members to Thailand,

Malaysia and Singapore in 2009, which is a regular

activity of IMA Solapur since then.

Dr. B. Shivashankar, is an active Rotarian of

Rotary Club of Solapur since 1995. He was the

Secretary in 1998-99 and President in 2002-03.

Here too he is in the governing board of the

club almost every year since his induction into

Rotary in various capacities and at present for

the year 2017-18, he is the club trainer. Even in

the Rotary District, Rtn. Dr. Shiva is very active

and has held various prestigious positions like

GSE Chair, Youth Exchange Chair, International

Service Director etc. Due to his Orthopaedic

Commitments, he has not accepted any further

positions in the district in the recent years.

Rtn. Dr. Shiva is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and

through Rotary international, Dr. Shivashankar

has done over 700 free polio surgeries in many

African countries like Uganda, Ethopia, Kenya,

Tanzania, Nigeria etc in his multiple visits

between 1998 to 2012. He has also lead a group

of young professionals for their Vocational

Exchange to USA in 2011 as Group Study

Exchange Team Leader. Recently in 2015, he led

a group of Rotarians to Canada for a month

under Rotary Friendship Exchange Program.

Dr. B. Shivashankar, is techno savvy and he was

selected as Chairman of Computer Society of

India, Solapur Chapter. He is amongst only a

selected few non computer professionals who

have occupied this coveted position.

Dr. B. Shivashankar, a regular swimmer is very

adventurous too. He has done Bungy Jumping,

Sky diving in New Zealand. Trekking is his

passion. He has done many Himalayan High

Altitude and Extremely High Altitude trekking

like Trek to Roopkund, Shitidhar, Lahaul Spiti,

Kailas Mansarovar etc.
