GROUP 2: Description of hydro-geological profile between

borehole to river

Group Members: Mr. Daniel Kurao, Paul Memusi, Eric

Kariuki, Wesley Langat, Samwel Jakinda.

Group 2 Question:

Add all relevant information to the hydro-geological profile from borehole to river and

discuss the potential relationships between the different water levels

Desk Review

• Google map information on geology of sultan hamud yielded

– Volcanic ash, breccia and agglomerate then an infusion of

clay towards the gully from Olmeliai

– Red soil from gully to river bank

– Sand at river

– Volcanic overlaying gneisses with fractures

Transect walk (Geological observations)

• Physical observations largely matched desktop review findings i.e.

from Olmeliai borehole

– Red soil-transitioning to clay soil and then red soil then black near

Kwa chief then red soil towards the river. There was sand in the

river.

– Stones found on the surface during transect walk were largely

igneous volcanic and metamorphic gneisses.

– Stones collected at the river (add picture)

– Bassalts found in gulley

Findings of Olmeliai to Selengei profile

• 16 waypoints were marked with the gps equipment

• Information about the points were noted in the field and

transferred on an excel spreadsheet waypoints-suswa

group 2.xls

• The excel sheet was transferred to Google earth through an

application.

• A profile was then generated from Google earth. Ormoliai to

Selengei river profile group 2.kmz

Findings

• Elevation at Olmeliai borehole is

1320m a.s.l.

• Borehole drilled to 200m

• Water rest level at borehole is

46m

• Riverbed elevation is 1291m

a.s.l

• Shallow well at the river bank

has a total depth of 50m

Discussion

• The difference in height between the borehole and the riverbed is 29m.

• The water rest level of the borehole is 46m

• The borehole is 171m below the riverbed

• The shallow having been drilled to 50m, gives a height different of 79m

between the borehole and the shallow well depth

• The shallow well is being recharged by the river.

• In conclusion, it can be assumed that the river can possibly be

recharging the borehole.
