This version of our genealogy is dedicated to the late Patricia Brock Smith. Had it not been forher enthusiasm and assistance in 1981-82 this Alford venture would probably never havegotten off the ground. Much of the content of this genealogy and that of more distant kin camefrom Pat.

This is the first update of this genealogy since the 2004 Alford American Family Association (AAFA)meeting in Baton Rouge, LA. All the information we have is now in the computer and that is what is here. There must have been a lot of births, marriages, and deaths over these past eight years; and there wasprobably some earlier information that is not yet in the computer. Some photographs will be in the nextversion. Your feedback with additions, corrections and photos is badly needed as soon as you can send it sothat a revised genealogy can be prepared.

Gilbert K. Alford, Jr., the compiler of this work, was his grandson and knew him personally. Hisfamily during the 1930's and early 1940's visited with him every year. About 1943 Jep bussed to Ferriday,LA where he visited a while with his son's family.

He purchased 39 acres located in section 17, township 1S, range 10E, from the New Orleans federalland office July 11, 1889. A copy of the federal grant is on Jeptha's page on the Internet.

Cause of death was Bronchial Pneumonia due to hypertensive heart disease and he was senile. AAFAhas a copy of his death certificate, which erroneously shows his birth as Georgia. Uncle Iddo just did not

ARDENT LONG SUPPORTER WANTS ADMINISTRATION TO WIN

Jep M. Alford, life-long resident of Washington Parish and one of its notable elder citizens, is anardent follower of Governor Earl K. Long, and is actively supporting him in the Second Primary to be held,February 20th. Recently Mr. Alford spent several days in Baton Rouge, and while there, was a visitor at theGovernor's Mansion. Later Mr. Alford went to New Orleans and attended the Long meeting held there priorto the First Primary. Mr. Alford supported Huey P. Long every time he ran for office, and has been a loyaladministrationist ever since. He is sincere in his belief that the only way in which the masses of the peopleof the state can continue to receive the benefits made possible by Huey P. Long is to continue the presentgovernor in office and he is fighting to that end.

Mr. Alford was born on July 22, 1862 on the farm in Second Ward where he now resides. On Sept18th 1886 he was married to Fannie Ophelia Purvis, who died on March 9, 1896. Five children, three sonand two daughters, survive with him. They are Banton Alford of Mt. Hermon, Leoda Alford Smith ofBogalusa, Nola Alford Smith of Mt. Hermon, Alonzo and Iddo Alford, both school bus drivers and farmersof Mt. Hermon.

On May 12, 1887 he was married to Laura Jane Warner, who died on March 29, 1939, leaving twosons and three daughters with the father surviving. They are Mrs. Roxie Alford Penton of Franklinton,Gilbert Alford, agriculture teacher at Columbia La, Lora Alford, county agent at Watergboro, S.C., LexieAlford Turner, music teacher at Baton Rouge and Gussie Alford Fortenberry of New Orleans. He has 33grand children and 27 great grandchildren.

Mr. Alford, very active for a man of his age, 78 years, is the baby of a family of 17. All have passedon. except one sister, Mrs. Mary Crow, of Franklinton.

[His age of 78 would indicate this was published in 1940. Gilbert's family moved from Columbiabetween the 1939-40 and 1040-41 school years.]

JEP M. ALFORD

Jep M. Alford of the Mt. Hermon-Bogue Chitto Community died at his home May 26, 1948, afterhaving been confined to his bed for several weeks. He was almost 86 years of age at the time of his death.

Mr. Alford lived his entire life in his immediate community having been born within 300 yards of thehome in which he died.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday by Rev. O. O. Stegal and interment followed in the familycemetery located near the home.

Mr. Alford was a member of he Bogue Chitto Baptist Church and has always been an active memberuntil age prevented making a total of 12. [sic] Those surviving are: Mrs. Gene Dillon and Mrs. Edgar Smithof Mt. Hermon; Mrs. Kenzie Penton, Franklinton; Mrs. Don Shaeffer, Gonzales, Louisiana; Mrs. D. B.Fortenberry, New Orleans, Louisiana; Alonzo, Banton and Iddo of Mt. Hermon; G.K. of Gonzales, La; andL.W. of Walterbor, South Carolina.

There are 32 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

Fannie:

The 1880 census suggests she was born 1872. Earlier we listed Mar 10 1896 as death date but are nowusing Oct. which apparently is from her gravestone. Her step-father's bible listed her mother as MaryElizabeth Hinson. We assume this was a maiden name rather than name of a previous spouse. Her daughterLeoda had her birth recorded as Oct 9 1870 which is used her.

A Magee Creek Baptist Association book: "Fannie Ophelia Alford, wife of Jeptha M. Alford, was b.Oct. 9, 1870; died Mar. 1895; Married Sept. 18, 1894; leaves husband, 5 little children, a mother, 2 sis,Bogue Chitto." Pat Brock Smith noted that the "2 sis" might be an error.

Her daughter Leoda listed her marriage as Sept 18 but without a year. The 1885 is an estimate basedon birth date of first child. Leoda recorded her death as Mar. 10 1896 which is used in this genealogy.

Mrs. Nola Alford Smith, wife of Edd [sic] Smith, Mt. Herman, La., passed away Monday night March10, [1952] in a local hospital. She was 62 years of age, having been born October 2, 1889, in WashingtonParish.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev V. Davis, pastor from Bogue Chitto Baptist Church,assisted by Rev. D.P. Worshaw, pastor of Hayes Creek Church, and the Rev. M. Magee of Mt. Hermon.

Pallbearers were Bob Alford, Buddy Alford, Daunogh [sic] Alford, Nathan Smith, Hughey Miner andDenman Miller. Interment was in Bogue Chitto Cemetery, Hartman's of Tylertown in charge.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Bogue Chitto church and was active in church work as long as herhealth permitted. She had been confined to her bed since April 1951. She was loved by all who knew her.Surviving, besides the bereaved husband, are two sons, Earl and Hugh Smith, Mt. Herman; two daughters,Mrs. Lucille Graves of Franklinton, and Mrs. Eathel Lee Johnson, of Ellisville, Miss.; four sisters, Mrs.

EDGAR WILLIAM SMITH

EDGAR W. SMITH DIES SUDDENLY AT MT. HERMON

Edgar William Smith, retired farmer of Mt Hermon, La., Route 2, died suddenly at his home Sundayafternoon, May 24. His body was found, apparently an hour or more after death, by his son Earl Smith.

Mr .Smith was 74 yeas of age. He was a member of the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church and anoutstanding member of his community. His sudden passing was a grievous shock to his family and a widecircle of friends.

Funeral services were held from the Bogue Chitto church at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, withinterment in the church cemetery .Hartman' s Funeral Home of Tylertown was in charge of arrangements.

The services were conducted by Rev. W.F. Hutson of Bogalusa assisted by the Rev. F.S. Bolian, BogueChitto pastor, the Rev. D.P. Worshan,of Clifton, La., the Rev. R.S. Mefford of Mt. Zion Baptist Church andthe Rev. M.M. Magee of Mt Hermon.

Pall bearers were James Smith, Huey Miller, Nathan Smith, Clinton Smith, Murphy Smith and PeteMiller.

Mr. Smith was born in Washington Parish on March 26, 1879 the son of the late Jeremiah and MarthaBankston Smith. He lived his entire life in that parish. He was married to the former Nola Alford, whopreceded him in death on March 10, 1952.

Surviving are two sons, Earl and Hugh S. Smith of Mt. Hermon, the latter being a member of the U.S.Coast Guard; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Graves of Franklinton, La.; and Mrs. Victor Johnson of Ellisville,Miss; one sister, Mrs. Luther Varnado of Osyka, Miss. and one grandchild, Roby Craves of Franklinton.

FUNERAL HELD FOR MT. HERMON SCHOOL BUS DRIVER WED.

Funeral service for Iddo L. Alford, age 64, of the Mt. Hermon Community, were conducted at 10:30A.M. Wednesday from the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church. Internment was in the Bogue Chitto Cemetery atthe church.

The funeral rites, were in charge of Reverend Fred Bolian, former Pastor of the Bogue Chitto church,but presently pastor of the Ebenezer Church in Tangipahoa Parish, assisted by the Reverend RobertSanderson, pastor of the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church.

Alford died at 6:30 AM. Monday in the Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, following six months of hospitalization and confinement to his home following a major operation made necessary by a lingeringailment. Alford, apparently was in the best of health in the latter part of October, 1959, when he began tocomplain of not feeling well and went to the hospital for an examination and found that his trouble was of aserious nature, which necessitated an early operation. Immediately following the operation, Alford was givenabout 50-50 chance of recovery , but. his condition gradually worsened until the time of his death. Up untilthe time of the examination, he had not known that he had any serious ailments.

Alford was a community leader in education and religious activities as well as being a leading farmerof the Mt. Hermon Community. He had operated a school bus from the. Mt. Hermon High School for thepast thirty-five years and was always ready and willing to assist a less fortunate neighbor. He made dozensof trips to help his less fortunate neighbors and friends to hospitals, to funerals, and to other places wherehelp could be received. He made many trips to Nashville, Tennessee to take bus loads of people from hiscommunity to hear the Grand Ole Opera and other trips to take bus loads of people on a vacation to suchplaces as Lookout Mountain and various other places of interest.

For many years, each child on his school bus was given a Christmas present. He always did this on thelast day school was in operation before Christmas. He was one of the most active members of the BogueChitto Baptist Church and could always be counted on to do more than his part in any community or Churchactivity.

The body lay in state in the family home, about four miles east of Mt. Hermon, until time for service atthe Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Ella Morris of Mt. Hermon; three sons, Roscoe Alford ofMobile, Ala.; Ford Alford of Bay Minette, Ala.; and Donough Alford of Mt. Hermon; one daughter, Mrs.Chrystelle Traina of New Orleans; four brothers, Bannon Alford and Alonzo Alford, both of Mt. Hermon;Gilbert Alford of Greensburg,La.; and Lora Alford of Walterboro, South Carolina; three sisters, Mrs. LeotaSmith of Tylertown, Miss,; Mrs. Gussie Fortenberry of New Orleans; and Mrs. Lexie Schaffer of Atlanta,Ga.

Pallbearers were Henry New, Donald Burch, B.F. Roberts, G.T. Patterson, Shelby Booty, C.K.Williamson, Honorary pallbearers were Harvell Pierce, R.W. Magee, Carey Burch, Malcom Wascom,Marvin Miller, Vernon Sanford, Burris Simmons and J.D. Miller. Brown Funeral Directors of Bogalusawere in charge of arrangements.

(It is not known in which newspaper the above obituary was published but it was published in AAFAACTION, Vol V., No 3, December 1992, pg 44 along with obituaries of some of his siblings.)

In 1992 we had her death date as April 20, based on obituary, but were told to change it to the 19th by anow deceased cousin; but both her obituary and the cemetery have April 20 so the date here has beenchanged accordingly. The SSDI does not list a day of death.

MRS. ELLA MORRIS ALFORD

Mrs. Ella Morris Alford, 83, a resident of Rt 2, Mt Hermon, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Apri120th, atthe Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb, Mississippi.

She was the wife of the late Iddo L. Alford of Mt Hermon, and was a member of the Bogue ChittoBaptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Roscoe L. Alford, Donough Alford, both of Mt Hermon, andFord Alford of New Roads, La.; a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Chrystelle) Traina of Metairie; nine grandchildren;and 13 great-grandchildren.

The body lay in state at the Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton until the time for funeral services,which were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Apri122nd at the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church with the Rev. RogerBowers and the Rev. H.B.Speights officiating. Interment was in the Bogue Chitto Cemetery .

Pallbearers were Ray Alford, Philip Alford, Paul Donough Alford, Jr., Rodney Holloway, MichaelTraina, and Mitchell Traina.

World War II. Known as "Preacher" he enlisted in the Navy in 1941, was sent to San Diego for 16 weeksboot camp, then to radio school. After graduation he was assigned as radioman on one of the PBY'spatrolling the Aleutian Islands from Alaska. They went on a patrol June 3, 1942 and were never heard fromagain.

Roxie and Martin Kenzie were married on stage at the Washington Parish Fair in Franklinton.

For years we have shown Roxie as born Aug. 30, 1900 based on input by daughter Zelda. That hasproved to be incorrect by the information on the gravestone and the 1900 census which in June 1900 showedher to be nine months old.

Martin:Although he was generally known as "Kenzie" he registered for SS as Martin Penton. He has

traditionally be shown as born Jan 29 1895 but the SS death index shows his birth as Jan 29 1896.

He was enumerated as Martin K. in the censuses of 1910-1930. His signature, in most cases whenseen, was M. K. Penton.

Mrs. Lucille Smith Graves, 86, a resident of the Hayes Creek Community, died at 12:10 a.m. onSaturday, Jan. 29 at Heritage Manor in Franklinton.

She was a member of the Hayes Creek Southern Baptist Church and the widow of Joe Graves.

She is survived by: a son and daughter-in-law, Roby and Myrna Graves of Franklinton; a grandson andgranddaughter-in-law, Terry and Jean Graves of Franklinton; 2 brothers, Earl Smith of Franklinton, andHugh Sam Smith of Mt. Hermon; 2 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces andnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Graves, a grandson, Ricky Graves, and a sister EathelLee Johnson.

Visitation was at the Crain Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, and continued on

Sunday.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, with the Rev. Gibbie McMillan, Rev. R. E.Ogburn, and Dr. Jerry Barlow officiating.
