Right back in 1751, a small paper mill wasbuilt in the Rench valley, near to the town ofOberkirch in the middle of the Black Forest.Otto Koehler of Ettlingen took over thebusiness in 1807 and founded a family firmwhich evolved into a global company overthe course of eight generations.

The chronology of Papierfabrik August Koehler SEis a global success story, and despite the size ofthe Group today, it remains a family story.

The early years were modest. Three genera-tions manufactured paper by hand at awater-powered paper mill. Industrialpro duction began in 1865 when the firstpaper-making machine went into operation.August Koehler, whose name the companystill bears, built up his business into one ofthe biggest paper mills in Baden, southwestof Germany. His success was built uponhigh-quality specialized paper for graphicaluse, combined with his foresight in lookingbeyond the borders of Germany. Thecompany has been serving European exportmarkets for more than a hundred years.

The first ever machine produced 62,800 kg ofpaper in 1865. Today, almost 1,500 tons of paperand board run off our machines daily.

New paper-making machines were set upover the following generations, and new,refined products were developed. Thecompany’s philosophy of investing itsearnings consistently in the improvement ofits products, in modern production facilities,and in developing new types of paper madethe Koehler Group what it is today. Placingits customers and workforce at the center ofeverything it does was, and remains, the keyfactor for success.

Our production machines are state-of-the-art. In 2019, another machine was added tothe Kehl factory. This is how we are shapingthe future of our company. Together withexternal partners such as DarmstadtInstitute of Technology (TU Darmstadt), ourresearch and development department isalways working on new ideas to presentinnovative products to our customers.

At Koehler, we pursue innovative ideas systema-tically.

With all its growth, the Koehler Group isaware of its responsibility towards theenvironment. For this reason, renewableenergies became a company focus at anearly stage.

Under the umbrella of the Koehler EnergyGroup, investments are being made intobiomass cogeneration plants, wind and waterenergy, as well as photovoltaics. The long-term goal is to generate more energy fromrenewable sources than is consumed inpaper production. Koehler’s goal is to achievethis by 2030.

Koehler also focuses on important topics ofsociopolitical significance. These includedecarbonization and the question of whatalternatives there might be to coal-firedpower plants. In the Koehler InnovativeSolutions business area, sustainable fillersplay an important role as an alternative toconventional materials.

The name Koehler FineTech Paper representsfine papers as well as technical specialties,which are used for a wide variety of applicati-ons.

The classics include ivory board, which is well-known worldwide and is particularly suitablefor high-quality printed matter. Koehler is aleading manufacturer of playing cardboard,which has excellent processing properties.The variety of the fine paper range is roundedoff with various colors and surface finishes.

Many of these materials are also offered withfine embossing.

Koehler FineTech Paper is available in grammagesof 40 – 500 gsm.

Our Koehler ICEWHITE IQ® digital printingpaper is ideal for printing invitations as well asfor sophisticated photo books. Whether posterpaper or chromo paper, known as coating paperfor puzzles, we always place emphasis on goodprocessing properties in our products. With ourthin printing paper, PakoPharm®, we have evenbeen able to convince the demanding pharma-ceutical industry of our high quality.

In the extensive portfolio of fine paper, high-lights include the base paper and coating paper,which offer the ideal processing properties forPE coatings, for example.

Koehler's recycled paper is grouped under thebrand "Euler ColorTech Paper" and offers awide range of colors and product properties.

For packaging solutions of the highest standard andfor the most sophisticated products, Euler has anextensive color palette and innovative solutions forspecial customer requirements.

Thanks to the wide variety of strong colors,this paper and cardboard is not only ideal forpackaging, but also for shopping bags, officeorganization, and school and craft supplies.The products have impressively bright colorsand streak-free surfaces.

Koehler produces the recycled paper at itsGreiz factory. In addition to first-class wastepaper processing, the factory offers advanceddyeing technology, which allows recycledpaper to be made in a variety of colors that

very few suppliers offer. Over 120 employeeswork in Greiz, keeping the quality high anddeveloping new products based on 100 per-cent secondary fiber stocks.

Koehler recycled paper is characterized by thesurface feel of an uncoated paper combined withexcellent properties for processing.

These include excellent printing propertiesand a good base for numerous types offinishing. While most types are designed foroffset printing, with COLORline IQ, Koehleroffers the world's first recycled paper fordigital printing specifically on HP Indigoprinting presses.

Thermal paper has become indispensable inmany areas of daily life: as receipts or pricelabels in the supermarket, credit card receiptsand package labels, simply wherever informa-tion needs to be printed quickly and cost-efficient.

We provide equipment suppliers and lamina-tors around the world with what are calledthermal jumbo rolls, which are then processedto make cash register rolls, self-adhesivelabels and tickets.

Due to a strong market presence and intensivesupport of our international customers, Koehlerhas been a leader in the area of thermal POSand labels for many years. The paper for one intwo cash register rolls in Europe now comesfrom Koehler.

In order to meet the ever-increasing demand,we are continuously investing in the thermal

area. In the factory in Kehl am Rhein, wenow have the most modern and efficientproduction facilities in the world.

Certification by global market leaders such asToshiba and Epson proves the high quality ofKoehler thermal paper.

Through intensive research and development,we are always improving our thermal paperaccording to the individual requirements ofour customers. For example, with our productBlue4est® we offer the world's only thermalpaper that works without chemical developersand is therefore permitted for direct contactwith food. But that is by no means all. Thanksto the new technology, the thermal printingremains easily legible even after many years.

The Koehler Decor Paper division makesspecialized paper used to decorate woodenmaterials. In printed or unprinted form, decorpaper is impregnated with resins and then laidas a laminate onto a backing material.

Koehler manufactures a wide range of high-grade decor paper on its paper machines.

The product range comprises regenerated andedge banding paper, LPL, HPL, CPL paper inUni and basic print quality. Our satin-finishfilm paper rounds off our diverse range. All ofour decor paper can be produced in a widerange of colors, grammages, and optimizedsurface qualities.

We believe in bespoke work. We supplyproducts individually tailored to individualcustomers and their requirements.

We put quality first – quality rather than quantity.

Our decor paper is distinguished by top colorconsistency, impregnability, quality finishes,and dimensional stability, all of which ensurethat the paper can be used and processedwithout difficulty.

The subject of packaging is something weencounter not only in our everyday work, butalso in the news. The material packaging ismade of is increasingly becoming a key issue.Here paper has advantages compared withother materials. It is made from renewableraw materials and can be recycled, whichworks well for paper.

Over 75 percent of the paper used in Germany isrecycled. In other countries the rate is evenhigher.

The Koehler NexFlex product portfolio, theproduct line for flexible packaging paper,includes paper which is one-side coated aswell as uncoated paper. For one-side coatedpaper, applications range from a wide varietyof pouches and bags, to yogurt lids andbanderoles, to metallization base paper.

Uncoated paper is popular with consumersbecause they are suitable for a wide variety ofapplications. They also give a nice feel withtheir natural texture.

In addition to paper which is one-side coatedand uncoated paper, the portfolio also includespaper with functional surfaces.

This paper has smart coatings, providingbarrier functions for flavors, steam, oil andgrease and much more. The aim is, where itmakes sense and is possible, to replaceplastic packaging with paper and to show thatan ecological necessity also makes economicsense.

Packaging for the future


The KATZ Group offers its customers thesmallest and nicest advertising space in theworld. The coaster, colloquially known as abeer mat, has long since lost its pub imageand shown that it is suitable for any possibleoccasion. Wherever a message is to becommunicated, there is a coaster. Nobodyclicks away from it, it invites people to playwith it and it is sometimes even taken home.At the same time it is suitable for a widevariety of types of finish.

The world market leader for coasters has beenpart of the Koehler Group since 2009.

With the KATZ DISPLAY BOARD, KATZtransfers the impact of the coaster to large,plastic-free displays, which can be used by allthe leading printing and cutting machinemanufacturers for large-format printing andare available in a wide variety of designs fordifferent purposes.

The basic material is as sustainable as thecompany philosophy. With wood-pulp board,the name says it all. At KATZ, logs from the

surrounding area are pulped and processed toproduce a versatile material. The entire valueadded chain takes place at the companyheadquarters in the Black Forest.

KATZ represents innovation and has grown asa company from a sawmill in 1716 to a globalplayer and part of the Koehler Paper Group.

We use only high-grade ECF bleachedcellulose to make our paper in Oberkirch andKehl. It originates from responsibly managedforests and is FSC® or PEFC certified.

We only use cellulose and wood pulp that comesfrom sustainable forestry.

Koehler processes cellulose harvested inSouth America and southern Europe fromeucalyptus plantations.

In central and northern Europe, cellulosecomes mainly from small-diameter wood andsawmill remnants. The utilization of thinnedwood is an important contributor to maintai-ning the health of our woodlands.

At our plant in Greiz, secundary fibres areused for paper production. Sophisticated

dissolving and preparation systems convertthis waste paper into a valuable raw materialwith which to produce colored paperproducts.

At The KATZ Group, local wood obtainedby thinning is the only thing used to manu -facture mechanical wood pulp.

To guarantee the quality of our raw materials,we commit our suppliers to certain specifica-tions. We utilize the very latest analyticaltechniques – constantly and diligently – toensure that these specifications are met.

We ensure that our customers can rely on paperquality that is as high as it is consistent.

We manufacture our products at four plantsin Germany, on nine paper machines withworking widths of 220 to 420 cm.

Our paper and coating machines in Kehl,Southwest of Germany, are state-of-the-art.

Modern process management systems ensurethat our customers' high demands in terms ofquality can be fulfilled at all times.

Coating machines with the latest curtain-coating processes, modern finishing machines,automated processes on driverless transportsystems, right through to packaging robotsand fully-automated warehouses, ensure afast, efficient production process.

A complex IT platform works in the back -ground, gathering data and analyzing it,enabling us to continuously improve thequality of our work and our products.

In 2019, with paper machine 8 and coatingmachine 8, both designed especially for theproduction of flexible packaging paper werecommissioned. At the center of the papermachine is the world's largest Yankee dryer.

Despite the perfection of the computer-controlled monitoring system, ultimatelythe responsibility lies in the hands of ourexperienced paper technologists, who controland monitor the production process andcarefully assess the quality.

By continuously investing in cutting-edgetechnology and high-tech aggregates, we willcontinue to ensure high-quality production ofKoehler paper and board in the future and thusour cost leadership.
