Blackshear Newsletter - October 2015 USE OF WIRELESS DEVICES WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE The Texas Transportation Code currently prohibits the use of a wireless communication device while operating a vehicle within a school crossing zone. The Legislature has added a new offense to the Transportation Code that prohibits the use of a wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle is stopped or the driver is using a hands-free device, or there is a specified emergency. This offense was added to address the problem of individuals using wireless devices while driving through school parking lots or driving lanes. In summary, this new legislation permits Klein ISD police officers to stop and cite individuals operating a motor vehicle on a school parking lot provided the vehicle is in motion at the time of the offense. This provision is in addition to the existing law enabling officers to cite drivers within a school crossing zone. BREAKFAST TIMES Breakfast is served from 7:45 am until 8:05 am. ATTENDANCE PROCEDURESThe following attendance procedures are set and we solicit your support in implementing them.

School begins at 8:15 a.m. Students arriving after 8:20 a.m. will be considered tardy and must get a tardy slip from the office to be admitted into the classroom. At 8:15 all car rider, walker, and bike rider entrances will be locked and students will need to enter the school through the front door.

Student attendance is taken at 9:45 a.m. Students present at that time will be counted present for the day. This is the official time for determining student attendance information. Calling Absentees - In order to assure that students arrive safely at school, we call parents when students are absent. Parents should call the attendance office between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. at 832-375-7600 (Press 3 for Attendance then Press 1 to Report Absence) on the first day of a student’s absence. When the student returns to school after an absence, the student is required to bring a written excuse to the homeroom teacher within 5 days.

If for any reason you should need to pick up your child during the school day, please send a note to the homeroom teacher. When you come to pick up your child you will come to the office to sign him/her out. Identification will be required. The office staff will go to the class to get your child for you.

CUSTODY ISSUESPlease assist us in the handling of custody related issues. It is the responsibility of the parents to provide the principal a certified copy of the court order affecting any other person’s right to their children. Should you have any question, please call Mary Ellen Sedlacek at 832-375-7610.

EMAIL AND VOICE MESSAGESAll teachers have voice mail and email communication tools available to communicate with you. We encourage you to use these tools to communicate with your child’s teacher. Please note that teachers will check their email and voice mail during non-instruction time. Every attempt will be made to respond to messages within 24 hours. Do not leave emergency or transportation messages that are critical for that day. Please contact the front office to leave these messages.Email Tip: Please put KISD: and your child’s name (KISD: Jane Doe) in the subject line of the email. This will help teachers identify your message as an important message. Teachers are advised not to open emails they can’t identify in some manner. Email is the preferred form of communication over voice mail.

RETURNING TO CAMPUS AFTER HOURSDue to security and safety concerns we will not allow students and parents to return to the classroom after 4:00 p.m. Students who need to get items from the classroom before 4:00 p.m. must check in at the front office before going to the classroom. Custodial staff or After School Program staff will not be able to admit students or parents to the classroom area.

SCHOOL TARDIESArriving at school prior to the start of school is important for your child to have a productive day of learning. Morning arrival time for students is from 7:45 a.m. until 8:05 a.m.

Students who are tardy to school an excessive number of times will have their conduct grade lowered by one letter. This will impact awards given each reporting period.
